Welcome Back, Evan Rachel Wood and Just in Time for Oscar

Posted by Susan Thea Posnock On November - 5 - 2008

In the “it’s a slow news day” department…

JustJared is reporting that Evan Rachel Wood has dumped albatross Marilyn Manson.  This news bodes well for Ms. Wood’s acting career as the Manson thing was a PR nightmare.  Wood, who clearly never cared about her career in any serious way and who was just following her heart can easily bounce back.  Now when she appears at any red carpet event there won’t be that nagging urge to compare her to Dita Von Teese.

      Or Rose McGowan.
      Or Trent Reznor. ;-)

How is she in The Wrestler?

    3. Alan of Montreal November 5th, 2008 at 10:00 pm 3

I don’t agree with your removal of Melissa Leo from the Best Actress category, Sasha. I think she still has a shot.

    4. SaltireFlower November 5th, 2008 at 10:26 pm 4

Thank God! She can go back to being a blond again.

    5. Ken November 5th, 2008 at 10:50 pm 5

She’s been tainted for me. Completely tainted. I used to think she was so pretty, but now she goes on the list of “Women who have been intimate with Marilyn Manson” for me. I can’t look at her anymore!

    6. Seankgallagher November 5th, 2008 at 11:01 pm 6

Ken, I understand your view, but I’m willing to put her relationship with Marilyn Manson in the category of “a phase.” I guess I just liker as an actress that much.

    7. alex November 5th, 2008 at 11:27 pm 7

      Hey Alan From Montreal,

Melissa Leo is still on there, just one level lower (with Angelina Jolie)

    8. Evan Rachel Wood Dumps Marilyn Manson; How Will This Fair For Her Oscar Chances? « Fataculture November 6th, 2008 at 12:24 am 8

[...] As the longstanding curator of EA (Evan Anonymous), it always pained me to see 21-year-old Ms. Rachel Wood hooking up with super freak 39-year-old Marilyn Manson and how he could quite possibly ruin her public image. However, the side effects of that relationship seem to have done absolutely nothing to Wood other than temporarily change her taste in clothes and the shade of her hair colour. Regardless, she has now dumped the sad sack of Gothic-loserdom and now she can focus on what is really important: her career. Speaking of her career, as much as I adore her in everything she has ever been in, her self-confinement into playing angst-riddled teenagers is getting stale. [JustJared via AwardsDaily] [...]

    9. Nick Plowman November 6th, 2008 at 12:26 am 9

I am her biggest fan, and even if her ‘relationship’ with that freak hasn’t done anything other than alter the colour of her hair, I am still glad she kicked him to the curb. As much as I want her to get an Osar nomination for ‘The Wrestler,’ as she was effing ROBBED with ‘Thirteen,’ it seems as though if any female were to get nominated for that will, it will be Tomei. I hope I am wrong. Regardless, I can’t wait to see ‘The Wrestler.’

    10. XanderLJ November 6th, 2008 at 12:35 am 10

Why all the Manson hate? Isn’t this a liberal blog?

I’m not a heavy-metal fan, but Manson seems like a very bright guy in interviews. And anybody who gets persecuted by Joe Lieberman is usually a figure of merit.

    11. rose November 6th, 2008 at 2:11 am 11

      THANK GOD!!!

The girl is way too talented to be set aside due to a relationship with Manson , but I am glad its over and now she can focus on her career.
And I agree she was robbed for Thirteen.

    12. Marshall November 6th, 2008 at 3:32 am 12

Marilyn Manson is one of the smartest and boldest entertainers in America. Sincerely. I say this as a hater of most of his music.

    13. Guy Lodge November 6th, 2008 at 4:29 am 13

She is rather good in The Wrestler, but there is no way she should get in ahead of Marisa Tomei. That simply wouldn’t be right.

    14. Matt Mazur November 6th, 2008 at 8:10 am 14

With or without Manson, she ain’t getting anywhere near the Oscars this year, unless it is to support her nominated co-stars Tomei and Rourke.

At one one time he seemed fine, but he seems like a joke now. Hell, even as far back as 2001, The Onion, was making fun of his schtick. Plus, there’s the nasty allegations from his ex-wife about being obsessed with Nazism, and not to mention turning his new girlfriend into said ex-wife despite denials about it.

      Antichrist Superstar!!

    18. Sam November 6th, 2008 at 1:29 pm 18

Manson is not a good guy, and that has nothing to do with being liberal or not. He is into mind control and takes drugs and is probalbly an alcoholic. This is the best news I’ve heard since Tuesday night. He was a 37 year old and she was 19. He’s an ass.

I thought she was spectacular in The Wrestler, it’s just not a big role. Tomei could be considered lead and Wood supporting, but, that wouldn’t be a smart move for Tomei.

Word from the street though, is that Aronofsky and Rourke hate Tomei and would rather see Wood get the nom.

    19. Alan of Montreal November 6th, 2008 at 3:38 pm 19

Sam, where’d you hear the rumour about the hate for Tomei?

re: my Melissa Leo comment. Whoops, my eyes didn’t make it past the space after Keira Knightley. Sorry, Sasha, my bad.

    20. Sasha Stone November 6th, 2008 at 5:51 pm 20

She was too young, in my opinion but it’s not really my business. It did seem to taint her image, though and Manson was nowhere to be seen in press interviews lately.

Chill out? I made one little comment, lol

For the longest time though, I was just creeped by the idea of a girl my age dating Marilyn Manson. But whatever, he’s entitled to do who/whatever he wants, I suppose.

I didn’t mean to elicit any serious reactions regarding my comment.

    23. XanderLJ November 6th, 2008 at 10:26 pm 23

“Manson is not a good guy. He is into mind control and takes drugs and is probalbly an alcoholic. He was a 37 year old and she was 19. He’s an ass.”

Any proof about the mind control accusation? And I don’t know how drug use (depends on what drugs) and possible alcoholism makes someone a bad guy? I know many potheads (hey, sometimes that description fits me, I suppose) and alcoholics who are really nice and likable folks. Sure, alcoholism is a disease, a very sad one at times, but it doesn’t make one a bad person. And the age thing I have ALWAYS thought is a non-issue that people should stick their noses out off. It seems to be the only relationship prejudice that is tolerated (unlike prejudice for interracial couples or same-sex couples).

    24. Joao Mattos November 6th, 2008 at 11:52 pm 24

Don’t care if Manson is a drunk, don’t care for the age difference, etc

Pure and simple: to earn his living by using as a stage name a mix of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Mason, makes him to me, a pretty disguting SOB. To use the name of Manson in a artistic career is an insult to the memories of the victims from Manson hood. And in terms of cultural provocation, he is no Luis Buñuel, no Pier Paolo Pasolini, just to name two among hundreds. MM is just an example of pop culture and the most demented and useless aspect of it.

    25. backto1960 November 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm 25

I thought was amazing in thirteen. She scared the heck out of me in that move. Covincing performance. Ever since the whole MM thing, I just couldn’t stand her. I still won’t like her…the thought of her doing the nasty with that disgusting piece of sh*t makes me puke. She’s been “tainted” if you know what I mean. Let’s not even get into the music video they did, the one were they are having sex and blood is dripping everywhere. YUCK! ….trying too hard to be out there won’t get you losers anywhere. LOSERS!

      regards from 1960

    26. Ken November 7th, 2008 at 4:44 pm 26

Yeah that music video she did with MM… that’s what really turned me off from her relationship with him. But whatever, if I say anymore then I must be “freaking out”… lol

    27. XanderLJ November 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pm 27

Joey Mattos and backdoor69, you’re both idiots. As “pure and simple” as you can get.

“Pure and simple: to earn his living by using as a stage name a mix of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Mason, makes him to me, a pretty disguting SOB. To use the name of Manson in a artistic career is an insult to the memories of the victims from Manson hood.”

First of all, learn to spell, dummy. 2nd…WAAAH, he used the name of a guy who told a bunch of fucked-up kids to kill someone, WAAAH! Boo-f’in-hoo, he used it as a critique of the culture of celebrity. That’s the whole point. His name, in a weird way, is similar to the message of NATURAL BORN KILLERS. A critique of how even “monsters” are implemented into the culture of celebrity. And artistic names don’t have to be sensitive to anyone’s pansy-ass emotions.

“And in terms of cultural provocation, he is no Luis Buñuel, no Pier Paolo Pasolini, just to name two among hundreds. MM is just an example of pop culture and the most demented and useless aspect of it.”

Total bullshit. He’s no Buñuel, he’s not a filmmaker, but he’s an example of pop culture’s most demented and thought-provoking AND provocative aspect of it. If he was “useless”, you wouldn’t be bitching like a little girl with a skinned knee about him.

As for the other vacant lot:

“Let’s not even get into the music video they did, the one were they are having sex and blood is dripping everywhere. YUCK! ….trying too hard to be out there won’t get you losers anywhere. LOSERS!”

Well, they have an internet scat stain like you going all nuts about it, and wasting your time insulting them (who you don’t know). And Wood will probably be around for a looong time acting wise, and MM is already a music icon, so they don’t have to get anywhere. They’re already there…WINNERS!

    28. backto1960 November 8th, 2008 at 12:39 am 28

      @ XanderLJ

I knew it wouldn’t be long before some lunatic from the Marilyn Manson cult comes here and start to antagonize people for their opinions. Why don’t you just state your opinions without diminishing others huh? everyone has been doing so I see no reason why you should be an exception. I have the right to my opinion and I’m sticking to it. MM is a disgusting piece of shit who can’t draw the line between art and nightmarish occultism. All those unnecessary antics which I won’t dignify by naming them, all for what? for the sake of art? where do you draw the line? and having sex with a girl in a music video, a girl who was not even 21 at the time ( I think she was 19), and having blood drip everywhere with all those utterly despicable imageries, all for the sake of art?

LOL @ the MM being a musical icon comment. LOL indeed!

    29. XanderLJ November 8th, 2008 at 9:41 am 29

“MM cult”, really? First thing I wrote was I wasn’t a fan of his music. I think he’s talented, but it’s not my cup of tea. NOT AT ALL.

I’m more of a 90’s hip-hop/60’s&70’s rock guy. I am however a very passionate supporter of artistic freedom of speech, and I think there’s nothing more UTTERLY DESPICABLE than judgmental pricks who attack an artist for taking risks with his visual imagery and daring to either test or cross the line of what’s considered good taste or “socially acceptable” (the latter usually decided by the most closeted monsters in the world, whose skeletons in their closet probably make MM look like a boy scout).

I’m old enough to remember when these hypocrite pricks (Lieberman and Cheney’s nauseating wife two of the most famous examples) sickeningly tried to blame MM for the Columbine massacre (there were 99 reasons, but Manson wasn’t one of them!), and when they later re-directed their witchhunt at Eminem (someone who I AM a fan of), so it disgusts me when I see the same old judgmental, empty-headed, thoughtless personal attacks ressurected here (on a movie board, where people should be smarter) on individuals because their art is somewhat “taboo” (a word that I have to write in quotations, since it’s usually used by religious fanatics whose list of taboo activities range from masturbation to being left-handed…lol).

“nightmarish occultism”? HAHAHAHA, you sound like the son of a TV evangelist with that bullshit!

“unnecessary antics”?? Phhft, who the fuck are you to say what’s “necessary” and what’s not? Who the hell determines that when it comes to art? I pray everyday that it is NEVER people like you.

“where do you draw the line?” – YOU DON’T! That’s the point of artists who take risks or, Duh!, cross the line. Go back to college and take Obvious 101.

“having sex with a girl in a music video, a girl who was not even 21 at the time ( I think she was 19), and having blood drip everywhere with all those utterly despicable imageries, all for the sake of art?” – First of all, they probably weren’t really having sex (you know, like 97% of artists who simulate sex in their music videos, lol). Second, who gives a shit how old she is as long as she was over 18. And the blood dripping was just used to provoke tight-ass easily outraged prudes like yourself.

And “utterly despicable”? I thought it was one of his most beautifully coreographed videos! Like many filmmakers, Guillermo Del Toro and Tim Burton for instance, Manson’s always had a gift for making bloody and/or nightmarish imagery seem majestic and beautiful. I’m not a fan of his music, as I’ve said 3 times already, but I AM a fan of his music videos.

    30. backto1960 November 9th, 2008 at 11:31 am 30

      @ XanderLJ

how did the Columbine massacre , dick Cheney, Tim Burton, TV evangelicals and Guillermo Del Toro get into this argument? LOL….the psychiatric ward is missing a patient LMAO!!

You seem to have a lot to say on this subject. Why don’t apply for president of the MM fan club or better still, write a book…even though I doubt people will read it.

I just like how you are going insane because you can’t tolerate other points of views about MM, a disgustingly ugly nincompoop in my opinion. Not tolerating other points of view? sounds like a TV evangelist to me.

    31. Paul Outlaw November 9th, 2008 at 2:23 pm 31

In other news: I saw The Wrestler last night and ERW is great in it. I missed her last couple of films, so seeing her all grown-up (and brunette) was a bit of a jump-cut from Running With Scissors, where you could still see a lot of the kid from Thirteen and even Once and Again.

    32. friedl November 14th, 2008 at 6:35 am 32

Great. So when is she being added to the sidebar? From what I’ve read, her role is just as powerul as Tomei’s? (I mean, if John Malkovich can make the sidebar for Burn After Reading, I think we can hope for some Evan love…)

btw – wow. How amazing was Tomei in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead?! Just saw it the other night. TOmei & Hoffman make the movie gold, I think Tomei;s is the best perf in the film, though, as it could have been a much less significant part, but she digs so deep & gives her character such force & tragedy. Great stuff (& I’m not a huge fan of Tomei. Loved her in In the Bedroom, but think her win for My COusin Vinny is a travesty.)

“The Academy is composed of mostly older members making this movie a dark horse. The acting is top notch, the dialogue is intelligent, and the subject matter is timely. The weighted ballot system may just push this deserving movie to the top of the heap.

Reitman’s picture is the most consistent of the nominated films I have seen, with each scene adding to the whole. Reviews have stated that some of the firing scenes were unnecessary and detracted from the film. In an odd way, they provided relief from all the tense personal relationships in the film, so I believe that the many interviews were valid.

Up in the Air’s kind of ending, somber, isn’t what is keeping it from being a mainstream hit at this point. The content that deals with job loss is the biggest detractor above all else, even though the subject matter is handled with expertise. Movies with somber endings are dominating the award season. Up in the Air, Precious, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker have far from rosy endings.

I agree that it appeals to older adults because of its subject matter. Job loss, lack of commitment, and the feminist bent of the film add up to something many forum posters will not champion because it doesn’t appeal to their young sensibilities. However, youth does not rule the Academy.”
