MTV Movie Awards

Posted by Susan Thea Posnock On June - 1 - 2008

Update: Diablo Cody almost fainted when Johnny Depp won his award for Best Comedic Performance. He did look, well, seriously gorgeous.

Earlier: MTV is liveblogging the red carpet. Watch if you can stand even a second of it. I never can. Almost worth it to see Robert Downey, Jr. and co. win for Iron Man for “Best Summer Movie of the Year So Far.” Ropes of Silicon wins the contest for Best Headline with MTV Proves Their Irrelevance with 2008 Movie Awards.

Obviously a rather pathetic list of films, but considering MTV describes their show as irreverent you can’t really blame the results. After all, it isn’t about the movies as much as it is about giving movie studios and record labels a chance to promote their upcoming films and albums.

And promote they do. It’s every limelight-craving starlet in town.

The Johnny Depp part really redeemed the whole show. Wouldn’t wanna be Tom Cruise having to follow that. I actually felt a little bad for him.

    2. Ryan Adams June 1st, 2008 at 10:33 pm 2

True, bebe, but Tom can look forward to his triumphant return next year as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, while Johnny tries desperately to drum up excitement for John Dillinger.

    3. JonVan June 1st, 2008 at 11:55 pm 3

Hey I know you find the show and its nominees and winners hard to stand but don’t forget that the MTV’s have always had a reputation of being the anti-Oscars. While the Oscars turn up their noses to movies that win over the big crowds, it’s the MTV’s that gives the rewards to movies that give crowds reason to see them. For once, fanfare means something. Anyways I’m still pistoff that the AMPAS Academy didn’t even bother to give a single nomination to a Judd Apatow movie. I mean that guy was the top filmmaker of 2007!

As for the MTV’s, personally I was hoping to see Juno win Best Movie, Seth Rogen win for Best Comedic Performance and Javier win Best Villain. Best Kiss is the only award category worth considering relevant. Besides I think there should be an Oscar category for Best Kiss. LOL It’s a fun thought.

    4. S.T. Stevens June 2nd, 2008 at 12:25 am 4

      Best Movie- Transformers

I don’t really think I need to comment on that.

    5. bebe June 2nd, 2008 at 12:39 am 5

      Ryan, lol!!!

    6. Daniel June 2nd, 2008 at 1:21 am 6

At least there were a couple of worthy winners (Johnny Depp for best villain, Ellen Page for best female performance) but I think the fact that Transformers won best movie trumps anything good.

    7. Ken June 2nd, 2008 at 3:05 am 7

Perhaps there were just more good movies in the ’90s, but I used to think the MTV movie awards back then were actually pretty legit.

Think about the films that won back then: Terminator 2, A Few Good Men, Menace II Society, Pulp Fiction, Se7en, There’s Something About Mary… nothing wrong with those winning, in my opinion. And it’s hard to really complain about the Matrix or Gladiator winning because they were such hugely successful crowd pleasers (and of course, Gladiator won the BP award at the Oscars.) But, then they had the whole damn LOTR trilogy win three years in the row. What kinda shit is that?

And Transformers winning is funny because Transformers won “Best Summer Movie You HAVEN’T Seen So Far” last year. So it won two awards in two years.

I’m sure that has nothing to do with the fact that the studio that released Transformers was Paramount which is a company owned by Viacom, which happens to own MTV as well. But, nah, that couldn’t be why Transformers won.

    8. Tufas June 2nd, 2008 at 3:08 am 8

MTV Movie Awards have never been the anti-Oscars, as they honor the most box-office hits, while leaving out anything that may be more alternative but obviously better. These awards, much like MTV itself, have no say in their respective industries: MTV is no longer (and hasnt been for quite some time) “Music” Television and these awards mean nothing if not a chance for studios to promote their output (as very well pointed out).

And for Ken: well, all of the 3 LOTR films were indeed the best films out in those years, as you can check by their multiple Academy Awards nominations, including BP nominations for all 3, and their three covers on TIME magazine and their inclusion on everybody’s year-end Top 10’s and I could go on but clearly you have your mind set, so whats the use.

    9. Friedl June 2nd, 2008 at 5:13 am 9

This is totally off the point, but I think Johnny Depp must be the first actor in history to have more than one Oscar Nomination for a double-barrel titled film… (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl & Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)… Isn’t that random and cool?

I’m really looking forward to Shantaram.

What other unique ‘only’s’ are there? I’m sure Thelma Ritter has to be the only 5 (or 6?) time Oscar nominee with only supporting noms & who never won… (& she wasn’t even nominated for Rear Window…)

    10. Free June 2nd, 2008 at 6:12 am 10

I tried to watch just to see if I can stand the show for a few seconds, but this year proved, as the previous years did, that this is in fact the most unbearable awards show of all. I’m glad they allow you to watch the show online now, because after watching Depp and Page win, I was set for the day.

If Adam Sandler being honored and then singing about it appeals to anyone, then you probably don’t mind the show. I, however, have never thought Sandler was funny or appealing (save Punch-Drunk Love), but then again, when it comes to movies, I’m a snob like the Academy folk, and I don’t really care about what the general public likes, because when a movie like Transformers wins best anything that’s not attached to sound or effects, that tells me all I need to know.

    11. RichardA June 2nd, 2008 at 8:20 am 11

Johnny Depp looks like his old self in 21 Jump Street.
I hear they are making a movie version of it but he’s not involved with the production (looking like this Depp should be).

    12. Saltire Flower June 2nd, 2008 at 8:34 am 12

I never watch this show, and how am I rewarded this year? Johnny Depp wins and I don’t see it. I think that alone would have been worth watching the agony of this pointless exercise.
The 21 Jump Street movie without Johnny is going to suck. There, I said it.

Does Johnny ever age? The guy still looks like he’s 25.
And Tom Cruise looks like a fish out of water. He is so deserately trying to be cool again. Sorry Tom……no one has forgotten your
antics as much as you try to stiffle them now. And your recent attempt to revitalize your career on Oprah smelled like desperation.
BTW please don’t ever let Megan Fox speak again without a script in front of her. If ever there was an example of beauty without brains…..she’s it.

    15. RRA creates his own "Yellow" Popcorn June 2nd, 2008 at 10:46 am 15

Funny seeing Depp still in his PUBLIC ENEMIES hairstyle….hope that movie w/ Mann and Bale is good. Too bad AD will shit all over it as soon as it comes out this side of AMERICAN GANGSTER.

    16. Ryan Adams June 2nd, 2008 at 11:47 am 16

ouch RRA, that stings. You should know I’m AD’s Tom Hagen for gangster defense.

    17. RRA recommends Milius' DILLINGER (1973) June 2nd, 2008 at 11:50 am 17

Ryan, oh I know….but remember how others at this site, and in the forums, got mad because it wasn’t the “black GODFATHER” as many expected?

    18. Ryan Adams June 2nd, 2008 at 12:19 pm 18

The docket is full next year, RRA, with Capone and Dillinger both facing trumped up charges. I’ll be needing a Luca Brasi/Tommy Devito enforcer type to assist with delicate matters of harassment, coercion, witness tampering, suborning perjury and any other slippery obstructions of justice you might diabolically concoct.

    19. RRA interned on the Streets of Fire June 2nd, 2008 at 12:25 pm 19

Ryan, I’m your sort of guy….and as the AD Heavyweight Champion, WOO!, I will deliver!

    20. Ken June 2nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm 20

I’m no anti-LOTR person, I enjoyed the three movies. Looking at the category’s competition at the time, I suppose it was the best movie out of them. But they could’ve picked better movies to go up against the LOTR trilogy instead of picking Barbershop, Legally Blonde, etc…

Not that it matters anyway, but I got off track with my original point in my first post. It does seem now that the summer “popcorn” blockbuster movies are being rewarded now over other better movies. Maybe that’s just a matter of opinion.

    21. rm June 2nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm 21

      MTV cracks me up.

      “Best Summer Movie SO FAR”???

“Best Summer Movie YOU HAVEN’T SEEN YET”???

Even the Razzies don’t have categories as f***ed up as those. Who made those categories? And how did that person make other people think that they were a great idea? These categories are the weirdest categories ever!!

I can’t wait for them to start having categories like:

BEST ACTOR WHO WASN’T IN A MOVIE LAST YEAR

      or

BEST MOVIE THAT WASN’T NOMINATED FOR THE MTV AWARDS LAST YEAR

      or

BEST ACTOR THAT SHOULD BE CAST IN THE HOBBIT

      or

BEST FILM THAT I FELL ASLEEP TO

    22. Marshall June 2nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm 22

It is my greatest hope that PUBLIC ENEMIES wraps soon and they decided to enter it in the Oscar hunt. How sweet would that be?

    23. Alfredo June 2nd, 2008 at 5:20 pm 23

this had to be THE worst MTV Movie Awards Show ever. Awful host. Awful nominees. Awful winners. Just AWFUL. Why did it take 2 hours to give out 9 awards?

    24. Alison Flynn June 3rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm 24

Johnny Depp now has a golden box of popcorn for every Pirates movie made.

    25. Ryan Adams June 4th, 2008 at 2:27 am 25

Pirate’s upfront salary per film — $10-20 million.
back end percentage of 20% x 600 million x 3 — you do the math.
3 boxes of golden popcorn — priceless.

Wonder how much a case of that Benjamin Button Reverse-Aging Lotion costs?

1996 Mike Judge as Tom Anderson in Beavis and Butthead do America?

    42. Jezza November 13th, 2009 at 5:23 am 42

Jesse, who do you think will be nominated in the breakthrough categories next year?

    43. Jesse Peskofsky November 14th, 2009 at 3:07 am 43

Jezza i have no idea but what do you think of the nominees i thought of for Best Animated Villain if the MTV Movie Awards did do them from 1992 to now but i have to honest the missing one i didn’t know but you thought of for 1996. Mike Judge as Tom Anderson in Beavis and Butthead the movie wasn’t that good of an animated villian but i thought of the missing one for 1996 ERNEST BORGNINE AS CARFACE IN ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVAN 2 and i meant to say for 2006 and the last one i don’t know because the fourth nominee for that year i forgot to add in was MICHAEL KEATON AS CHICK HICKS IN CARS but when i said the last or two or three i don’t know that means i can’t think of the last or two or three nominees but the ones i thought of that means those are the ones i know. and so Jezza i will think of the nominees for Best Animated Movie if the MTV MOVIE AWARDS did do them from 1992 to now.

    44. Jesse Peskofsky November 14th, 2009 at 3:22 am 44

Wait Jezza i will redo the nominees for Best Animated villain because i’m going to find out the other missing ones and i will fix that because it should be fair that all the nominees be five each. but i will think of the nominees for Best Animated Movie if the MTV MOVIE AWARDS did do them from 1992 to Now.

    45. Jezza November 14th, 2009 at 4:35 am 45

    63. Jezza December 17th, 2009 at 2:22 pm 63

Animated villians may still be nomined in the villain categories.

When Johnny Depp won best villain for Sweeney Todd, one of the other nominees was an animated Angelina Jolie for Grendal’s mom in the the motion capture movie Beowulf.

    64. Jezza December 18th, 2009 at 11:16 am 64

Jesse, I’m not quite sure about Dr. Satan nominated as the movie ain’t popular.
A more likely nominee would be Jim Carrey in Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol.

      Now here’s a question!

If Jim Carrey was nominated for A Christmas Carol, would he be nominated for Ebenezer Scrooge or The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come?

Out of the 3 spirits, The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come would be the most intimidating as it actually toyed with Scrooge. The other 2 didn’t toy with Scrooge.

    65. Stiggy December 18th, 2009 at 2:32 pm 65

Jezza i would say Jim carrey as Mr. Scrooge okay
but if the mtv movie awards did do best animated villain who would you say the winners would be out of the nominees i thought of from 1992 to now.

    67. Stiggy December 19th, 2009 at 2:59 am 67

I don’t know Jesse because animation could be in anything. Hell even Gollum in the Lord of the Rings franchise was animated as he was created using motion capture. In that theory here could have been the winners in some years.

1992: Robert Patrick as T-1000 in Terminator 2 Judgement Day (Liquid CGI)

2001-2003: Andy Serkis as Gollum in LOTR (motion capture).

    68. Stiggy December 22nd, 2009 at 10:11 am 68

What if they just have Best breakthrough performance and nominate both males and females in the same category? One of the reasons Zac Efron won in 2008 was his biggest threat was Megan Fox,not the Superbad boys. Who would be nominated in 2010 if that was the case then?

    70. Eric January 3rd, 2010 at 8:41 am 70

I thought about what Stiggy mentioned and I came up with a possible Breakthrough lineup

Zachary Quinto as Spock in Star Trek
Mia Wasikowska as Alice in Tim Burton’s Wonderland
Chris Pine as James T. Kirk in Star Trek
Abbie Cornish as Fanny in Bright Star
Christoph Waltz as The Jew Hunter in Inglourious Basterds
Carey Mulligan as Jenny in An Education
Zach Galifianakis as Alan Garner in The Hangover
Melanie Laurent as Shoshanna Dreyfus in Inglorious Basterds
Bradley Cooper as Phil Wenneck in The Hangover
Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhra in Star Trek
Justin Bartha as Doug Billings in The Hangover
Diane Krueger as Bridget Von Hammersmark in Inglourious Basterds
Ed Helms as Stu Price in The Hangover.

    71. Nathan January 4th, 2010 at 3:47 am 71

have we agreed what nominees we are having this year?

    72. Jesse Peskofsky January 4th, 2010 at 11:09 am 72

I think Megan Fox deserves the BEST VILLAIN award because she did her role as Jennifer Check in Jennifer’s Body because in that movie she was an arrogant popular girl at school and then turned into a demon so i think the winner for Best Villain should be Megan Fox as Jennifer Check in Jennifer’s Body and I hope Transformers 2 wins for Best Movie.

    73. Eric January 4th, 2010 at 11:59 am 73

Jesse, I doubt Megan Fox will be in the running for best villain as it is a very competitive enviroment this year.

How the nominations are likely to turn out.

Ken Jeong as Mr Chow in The Hangover
Christoph Waltz as The Jew Hunter in Inglorious Basterds
Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes
Eric Bana as Captain Nero in Star Trek
Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen in Tim Burton’s Wonderland

      Here is the likely winner

Christoph Waltz as The Jew Hunter in Inglorious Basterds.

    74. Nathan January 5th, 2010 at 9:52 am 74

i agree with eric. Megan fox shouldn’t be nominated because people will only vote for her because shes sexy, not because shes a good actress

    75. Eric January 6th, 2010 at 12:43 pm 75

That’s possible Nathan, but given all that Oscar hype that Christoph Waltz is getting, that will more than like make him win best villain.

    76. Nathan January 14th, 2010 at 6:10 am 76

ye Eric, thats wot i mean, people should vote for christoph because his a good actor

    77. Eric January 14th, 2010 at 9:10 am 77

Given that Christoph Waltz is pretty much on the same mojo that Heath Ledger was getting for The Dark Knight, Christoph is practically a shoo in.

The only person I think could stop him would be Helena Bonham Carter’s turn as The Red Queen. The logic in that is the freshest memory can sometimes influence the vote. Having said that, Christoph Waltz’s Oscar buzz isn’t exactly coming to a halt.

Between Monique as an abusive mother in Precious and Christoph Waltz as a charismatic Gestapo officer in Inglourious Basterds, the populist vote will more than likely vote for the latter.

    78. Eric January 17th, 2010 at 7:47 am 78

Jesse I seriously doubt that James Masters and Megan Fox will be nominated for Best Villain.

Here is a more likely lineup.

Christoph Waltz: Inglourious Basterds (Colonel Hans Landa is a charismatic Gestapo officer nicknamed The Jew Hunter).
Mark Strong: Sherlock Holmes (Lord Blackwood is a former member of a cult called The Four Orders, who plans on taking over the British Empire).
Ken Jeong: The Hangover (Mr. Chow is a flamboyant asian gangster who kidnaps “Doug” in order to get back his lost prize money back).
Eric Bana: Star Trek (Captain Nero is a time traveling Romulan extacting revenge on the Starship Enterprise. His minions are the Romulans).
Helena Bohmam Carter: Tim Burton’s Wonderland (The Red Queen is a stroppy Saddam Hussein type. She has overthrown her sister, The White Queen, to take control all of Wonderland. Her minions are a huge deck of armoured cards).

    79. Nathan January 18th, 2010 at 3:39 am 79

      New Nominee for Best Kiss
Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried- Jennifer’s Body
(They always have something different in the awards for example
      Talladega Nights
      Starsky and Hutch
      Brokeback Mountain
Three examples of strange kissing, why not have another one)

    80. Eric January 18th, 2010 at 11:09 am 80

Nathan I have another kiss that’s strange.

What about that kiss in Bruno when Staight Dave alias Bruno is in that cage with his Austrian assistant Lutz and they are snogging while My Heart Will Go On is playing in the background.

    81. Jesse Peskofsky January 18th, 2010 at 5:54 pm 81

Eric you can just say i tried but for best villains those nominees you thought of are good but will just see when the 2010 mtv movies awards comes in may or june but i have an idea what about 7 nominees for best villain if it happens.

Christoph Waltz as The Jew Hunter in Inglorious Bastards
Hugo Weaving as Megatron in Transformers 2
Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes
Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy Krueger in a Nightmare on Elm Street
Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland
Megan Fox as Jennifer Check in Jennifer’s Body
Eric Bana as Captain Nero in Star Trek

      and For Best Movie

      Transformers 2
      G.I. Joe
      Star Trek
      Sherlock Holmes
      Twilight 2
      Inglorious Bastards

but i know i know will just see what happens in may or june but again at least i tried to guess.

    82. Afrika is back bishes January 18th, 2010 at 6:06 pm 82

      Predictions for 2010

      Best movie – Avatar
Best actress – Sandra Bullock for the proposal/ blind side
Best actor – Robert downey jr. for Sherlock Holmes
Best comedic performance – Someone from The Hangover
Best kiss – zoe and sam for Avatar
best villain – Waltz for Inglorious Basterds
      best summer movie – Avatar
best fight – Robet downey jr. and that big guy for sherlock holmes

Interesting! these are also the big winners at HFPA. Silly me, I forgot that HFPA = Mtv Movie awards. My bad

    83. Nathan January 19th, 2010 at 3:01 am 83

      who will win Best kiss?

    84. Eric January 19th, 2010 at 1:43 pm 84

What is your predictions for the male and female breakthrough categories Afrika is Back?

    85. Afrika is back bishes January 19th, 2010 at 1:49 pm 85

If you watched the Golden Globes then you’ve already watched Mtv Movie awards 2010 ( minus twilight of course).

    86. nathan January 21st, 2010 at 12:28 am 86

Afrika, i disagree with that, the golden globes only show films that nearly only adults would like, with a few good films throw in like Avatar and The Hangover

    87. Eric January 22nd, 2010 at 9:22 am 87

Jesse I have a question. Out of the villains you picked, who would win and why?

    88. Jesse Peskofsky January 22nd, 2010 at 8:21 pm 88

Well eric i’m glad you asked out of the seven villains i picked if that happens i guessed these three that look like the winner:

Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body because she plays an arrogant popular school girl that turns into a demon that does cannibalism on guys.

Mark Strong in Sherlock Holmes Because he plays a satanist lord that wants to take over the british empire.

Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Bastards because he plays a jew hunter.

it depends on how evil or bad the charactor is.

and i’m guessing Transformers 2 is going to win for Best Movie.

    89. Nathan January 25th, 2010 at 1:20 am 89

at the movie awards, i think they should take some time to think about the death of Michael Jackson. Maybe give him the Lifetime achievement award. What does everyone else think?

    90. Eric January 26th, 2010 at 11:01 am 90

Helena Bonham Carter might win best villain for her turn as a red queen as she might be the most recent villain. Sometimes the freshest memory can influence the vote.

    91. nathan January 28th, 2010 at 1:22 am 91

Helena bonham carter shouldnt win best villain because that film hasnt been released yet. Give the award to a film from 2009 like Transformers 2 or Sherlock holmes etc.

    92. Eric January 29th, 2010 at 10:36 am 92

Here’s an iumportant fact about MTV movie awards. Eligibility started since May 2009 and and will end in April 2010. Anything that comes out between May 2009 and April 2010 is eligible.

300 was a 2007 film and was nominated alongside Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest and Borat. Both of them came out in 2006. Tim Burton’s Wonderland comes out around the same time as 300 did.

    93. Eric January 29th, 2010 at 10:42 am 93

What about The Hangover winning Best Movie? If the likes of 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad and American Pie can be nominated, why not The Hangover?

    94. Nathan February 1st, 2010 at 5:07 am 94

The Hangover is good to nominate but it shouldnt win because theirs other good films like Transformers 2, Avatar and Public enemies

    95. Eric February 1st, 2010 at 11:26 am 95

Who should win the breakthrough categories? And who is likely to be nominatad?

    96. Nathan February 4th, 2010 at 3:52 am 96

      Winners
Breakthrough male- Sam Worthington for Avatar
Breakthrough female- Sara Harding for St Trinians 2

“While I’m obviously not ruling it out, I don’t think Avatar will win Best Picture, and the new preferential voting system is precisely why. Had they stuck with just having each member vote on their favorite of the nominees, it might have won, but something tells me that there are a lot of people within the Academy who are part of the backlash against the film, and will therefore place it at #10 on their ballots. You have to keep in mind that from now on, the movie with the most #1 votes is not necessarily the movie that wins. It’s easy to imagine Avatar will get a lot of #1 votes, but it’s equally easy to imagine it will get a lot of #10 votes as well, and that will really hurt it.

So you kind of have to think more along the lines of which movie will have the least against it, rather than the most for it. The Hurt Locker will undoubtedly get a lot of #1 votes as it is the frontrunner, and while I’m sure there will be those who put it at or near the bottom of their ballots, it seems to me that it will have a lot less low-end placements than Avatar will, and so The Hurt Locker easily has the edge over Avatar in that respect.

Inglourious Basterds also seems like the kind of movie that will split voters. It’ll get a lot of #1 and #2 votes, but probably also a lot of #9 and #10 votes. So I don’t think it’ll win (though again, I’m not ruling it out). Precious will probably get less 9’s and 10’s, but I frankly don’t think it will get enough 1’s and 2’s to pull off a win. I think it’ll get mostly mid-range votes. Same goes for Up in the Air, though I imagine even that will get more 1’s and 2’s than Precious will.

So to sum it up, I think The Hurt Locker, while not an absolute, no-turning-back lock, is still the clear frontrunner in this race. If we’re talking about a potential upset though, why not really factor in the new preferential voting system and try to imagine how much that could end up benefiting a film like, say, Up? While it might not get too many #1 votes, I can easily see it getting a lot of 2-4 votes, and who know? If the frontrunners all develop strong enough backlashes, then it could be that this year’s Best Picture will go not to the movie that is the most liked, but rather the movie that is the least DISliked. Just saying.”
