To quote a friend of mine: “This looks like Sweeney Todd’s nightmare!”

  2. Ryan Adams November 17th, 2008 at 10:53 pm 2

Or Sweeney’s bohemian brother, Quentin Todd.
The Sweeney family doesn’t like to discuss Quentin.

Seriously though, I like it. This is what I want from a Burton trip down the rabbit hole.

  3. Kholby November 17th, 2008 at 10:57 pm 3

    I’m scared.

  4. Osborne Cox November 17th, 2008 at 11:10 pm 4

    Fantastically odd.

  5. S.T. Stevens November 17th, 2008 at 11:13 pm 5

I’m beginning to think Tim Burton has an obsession with putting Johnny Depp in pale white make-up.

  6. k November 17th, 2008 at 11:34 pm 6

Yeah, I saw this yesterday and I didn’t know whether or not I should bring attention to it since it’s not an official release.

With all of the make-up, he reminds me of the Mad Hatter from the book.

If Depp wasn’t constantly playing these kind of roles, I’d be more excited. I miss the days when he did a bit of both. When there was an edge to his work. As a result I can’t generate nearly enough excitement as I should.

  8. k November 18th, 2008 at 12:02 am 8

Noah, he will appear as John Dillinger in his next film, so it’ll be something a little bit less bizarre.

  9. backto1960 November 18th, 2008 at 12:44 am 9

Alice on Elm Street: the SAW edition….LMAO!!

  10. Harry November 18th, 2008 at 1:38 am 10

Let me guess…his inspiration this time is Carol Kane and Marc Bolan…

  11. Rob Y November 18th, 2008 at 1:44 am 11

Why can’t Tim Burton enjoy color?

  12. backto1960 November 18th, 2008 at 1:55 am 12

Hmmm, I’m beginning to think that Burton is getting some orgasmic pleasure for dressing Depp like a clown and Depp seems to like it…

I’m all for Jack Sparrow but you have to cross a line somewhere. This ish is getting out of hand.

  13. Niles November 18th, 2008 at 1:58 am 13

Yes I know I am awesome, haha, k. First time I saw this picture of Mr. Depp, as the Mad Hatter, I wasn’t surprised of the tricks that Tim Burton had on his sleeves. Pretty awesome…!!!!

  14. Noah R. November 18th, 2008 at 2:24 am 14

True, k. And I hear that The Rum Diary actually is going ahead now. I eagerly look forward to these roles.

  15. zach November 18th, 2008 at 2:38 am 15

    looks awful

  16. Will November 18th, 2008 at 2:54 am 16

I gave up on Depp after he signed on for two more pirates movies back in 04.

Hey Burton, its not different if you do the same thing ALL THE TIME. So lay off your goth dreams and grow up a little.

  17. k November 18th, 2008 at 4:46 am 17

Yes, I’ve heard the same thing, Noah, and I believe Quixote is back on as well, so that’s something else to look forward to. I am wondering what the status of Shantaram is…

  18. Friedl November 18th, 2008 at 5:39 am 18

    Woah…
Well, they’re certainly taking some deliberate ‘left turns’ again with this one…

I’m really looking forward to Depp in Public Enemies & Shantaram.
He is such a great – & surprisingly understated – dramatic actor.

But he does odd and leftfield like no other.

  19. Manos November 18th, 2008 at 6:39 am 19

    Boring…

what’s interesting isn’t the surface image because it is, well, expected by now from Tim Burton paired with Johnny Depp, but the performance. Johnny Depp is an excellent actor and always does interesting work. Remember Willy Wonka? His Prince Valiant hairstyle and fake teeth got early notice, but it was his childlike performance that really got people talking (I was one who liked it. Alot.)

I see this picture and remember the sadness of Edward Scissorhands, the pain of Sweeney Todd, the sense of loss from Willy and know that there is depth in those darkened eyes. My only hope is that there is the element of fun that Johnny Depp brought to Jack Sparrow (and that actors like Jack Nicholson have brought out of Tim Burton characters).

  21. RRA is a Hatter November 18th, 2008 at 9:24 am 21

I just wonder how Disney feels about all this after they spent a fortune on it.

Either way, I’m sure Depp will rock.

  22. Jennybee November 18th, 2008 at 9:24 am 22

I kinda like it, but it looks like something from one of those photo shoots on America’s Next Top Model. Tyra says: “What is this look, the Mona Lisa? I said fierce!”

  23. JJ Jones November 18th, 2008 at 9:30 am 23

I feel like I’ve seen this episode before.

  24. A+ November 18th, 2008 at 9:30 am 24

I think Burton has grown up, Todd and Big Fish are more mature Burton movies, even Chocolate Factory is more visually sophisticated than his early work, complaining about this costume is like complaining about scorsese using tracking shots

Hmmm, I’m beginning to think that Burton is getting some orgasmic pleasure for dressing Depp like a clown and Depp seems to like it…

Haha. I would agree that this looks just like how I imagined Burton would dress him up, but what can I say, some things that never change never get old for me.

  26. filmboymichael November 18th, 2008 at 1:29 pm 26

I’m seeing Carrot Top crossed with Varla Jean Merman….

  27. SeattleMoviegoer November 18th, 2008 at 1:41 pm 27

after SWEENEY, i’ll follow these guys anywhere.
(although the trip through the chocolate factory
    was a bit painful)

  28. Dr. Strangelove November 18th, 2008 at 2:30 pm 28

Burton’s schtick is wearing thin. Him and Depp should do Ed Wood 2. Depp’s about the right age for it.

  29. SaltireFlower November 18th, 2008 at 2:31 pm 29

I will watch anything Burton and Depp make. So, I’m excited.

  30. DBibby November 18th, 2008 at 5:09 pm 30

“Tyra says: “What is this look, the Mona Lisa? I said fierce!””

Hahaha. I’m with ya Tyra (and Jenny), not feeling it.

  31. Daniel November 18th, 2008 at 11:41 pm 31

Tim Burton has made quite a few very strong movies, in my opinion (Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare before Christmas, Big Fish and especially Sweeney Todd are three of my all time favorites and most of his others have also been, if not excellent, very good).

Definitely siding with SeattleMoviegoer and SaltireFlower on this one. Burton + Depp is probably my favorite director + actor combination right now.

  32. David November 20th, 2008 at 10:22 am 32

Hmmmm… Depp and Downey seem to be 2 actors that have been suddenly considered as great actors after years of wallowing in mediocre films in the 80s and 90s and then when they starred in big hits suddenly they can’t seem to do any wrong. Weird. …. and over-rated!
    hehehe.
