Duplicity trailer

Posted by Ryan Adams On November - 26 - 2008

Julia Roberts and Clive Owen do a fairly decent impersonation of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in what looks to be retro-romp mash-up of Entrapment meets Closer.  Feels slick though, and the script I’ve read clicks along briskly with Tony Gilroy’s typically tight plotting and some sexy-snappy To Catch a Thief-ish dialogue (neither of which is very evident in this trailer.)

The good news: Now Stephen Soderbergh doesn’t have to make Oceans 14.  Could this be Gilroy’s pre-emptive strike at Soderbergh for remaking Michael Clayton as a real-life agri-business whistle-blower thriller, The Informant?  Clever maneuver.  Less clever is releasing Duplicity March 20, when most people will still be watching the Watchmen.   Gilroy targets a totally different demo though, so it’s smart counter-programming.  I’m a sucker for movies like The Italian Job (the 1969 original) and The Thomas Crown Affair (the 1968 original), so I’m actually going to stop poking fun now and start cautiously looking forward to this.

Tony Gilroy could make a film about the history of plumbing and I would watch it. Strangely overlooked despite his nods for Michael Clayton [last year's true BP in my opinion].

    holy CRAP, clive owen RULES!!!

I wanna be him.. and I bet my girlfriend wishes the same…

Love Gilroy and this cast. And I’m in the demographic that’ll be seeing this instead of Watchmen!

  4. Andre November 26th, 2008 at 3:06 am 4

Gosh, is it possible to hate Julia Roberts so much that I can’t even stand to watch this trailer? Her mannerisms, the same way she acts in every kind of role, always playing the same part, her laugh, quirk smile, sarcasm face to cover the fact she doesn’t have a clue about what she is saying…ugh. Enough is enough. Pretty Woman, retirement right now!

  5. Ryan Adams November 26th, 2008 at 3:25 am 5

    lol@”sarcasm face”
I’ll have to remember that, my next incarnation, when I’m in 1st grade again. Seriously funny though.

And that one shot in the trailer when she laughs really LARGE, and for a split-second it looks as if her face has come unhinged like the double-jointed jaw of a rattlesnake, and she’s about to take Clive Owen’s entire head in her mouth. Rather alarming. But makes me want to see what she looks like with the outline of his body being digested inside of her.

Some of those line deliveries: precariously capricious.

I don’t care. It looks like ithe nutty kitten thing fits the style of the movie, for once.

Tony Gilroy! Of the BP contender Michael Clayton!
    Writer of The Cutting Edge!!!
    “Toe Pick!”
Oh, Julia! Please say, “Toe Pick!”

  7. Ryan Adams November 26th, 2008 at 4:03 am 7

Toe-picking has been a proud BP tradition, every since it was popularized by Popeye Doyle in Poughkeepsie.
    8-)

Wow, that sure looks like fun with some witty lines and smart (comedy) writing too. A whole world removed from Clayton it seems.

I remember being in New York City at the beginning of May and finding one of the filming papers saying people weren’t allowed to park in that area for that day because Universal was filming Duplicity.

  10. RichardA November 26th, 2008 at 6:27 am 10

That gave me the silly laughs.
Why are they flirting with me?

This looks like so much fun. I really enjoyed Michael Clayton and I love this cast, so I’m really looking forward to this one.

THIS IS NOT THE SORT THING I WANT TO SEE JULIA ROBERTS IN AND WHY DOES SHE LOOK SO OLD AND HAGGARD.

Agree with the comment that said they would watch a movie about plumbing by Gilroy. The guy is seriously talented.

Looks like I’m in for a matinee double feature the weekend of March 20th. Who knows, maybe I’ll even consider paying for both films.

  21. daveylow November 26th, 2008 at 11:08 pm 21

This does look like fun. And yes Clive Owen can be Cary Grant but Julia Roberts is no Audrey Hepburn–she’s much too smug and in love with herself to be in Hepburn’s class.

  22. David November 27th, 2008 at 4:11 am 22

Didn’t Clive Owen already star in this one?! Oh wait, that was Derailed!
…with that A-list TV star but D-list movie dabbler – Jennifer Aniston! bwahahaha! Between J.A. and J.R. they are the two most over-hyped “actresses” in the planet! hehehe!

THIS IS NOT THE SORT THING I WANT TO SEE JULIA ROBERTS IN AND WHY DOES SHE LOOK SO OLD AND HAGGARD”

When actresses use botox etc to look younger we criticize them (see Nicole Kidman), When they dont do that we say they look old. Julia Roberts is 40 years old. She looks her age. and she plays someone around her age. So what’s wrong with that??? If she played a 20 something that would be a problem.

  24. iggy November 27th, 2008 at 5:31 pm 24

This trailer looks great, at least it works for me and makes me want to see the movie. I really liked Michael Clayton and Roberts is one of my weaknesses. One may like her acting skills or not, but what is striking because it’s so unfrequent and unpredictable is Roberts’ ability to get onscreeen chemistry with her partners, no matter if they’re as different as Gere, Finney, Clooney, Grant, Everett, Pitt or Owen.

  25. Mark November 29th, 2008 at 7:45 pm 25

This movie looks like fun. And there’s nothing wrong with having fun at the movies.

  26. Will November 30th, 2008 at 12:10 am 26

Michael Clayton and Juno rivaled each other as the most overrated BP of last year. Clayton started out good but ended in a gigantic mess. Anyone who loved that film has convinced himself that anything from Soderbergh, Clooney, or Gilroy is IMMACULATE when in in reality – its not.

Owen’s Shoot Em Up and Children of Men charm is wearing thin and this film looks like it MIGHT establish a little bit of range. The chemistry between him and Roberts played off well for both of them in Closer, so who knows if Roberts will be bearable in this film (she usually isn’t). Another wait and see is if Gilroy can write a non-Bourne film that doesn’t end with a deus ex machina that solves a messy plot and destroys the tension of the entire film.

I can only see myself seeing this film for the terrific acting of Giamatti and Wilkinson – the former who deserves a much needed reboot of a career and the latter who was the best part of Clayton.

“While I’m obviously not ruling it out, I don’t think Avatar will win Best Picture, and the new preferential voting system is precisely why. Had they stuck with just having each member vote on their favorite of the nominees, it might have won, but something tells me that there are a lot of people within the Academy who are part of the backlash against the film, and will therefore place it at #10 on their ballots. You have to keep in mind that from now on, the movie with the most #1 votes is not necessarily the movie that wins. It’s easy to imagine Avatar will get a lot of #1 votes, but it’s equally easy to imagine it will get a lot of #10 votes as well, and that will really hurt it.

So you kind of have to think more along the lines of which movie will have the least against it, rather than the most for it. The Hurt Locker will undoubtedly get a lot of #1 votes as it is the frontrunner, and while I’m sure there will be those who put it at or near the bottom of their ballots, it seems to me that it will have a lot less low-end placements than Avatar will, and so The Hurt Locker easily has the edge over Avatar in that respect.

Inglourious Basterds also seems like the kind of movie that will split voters. It’ll get a lot of #1 and #2 votes, but probably also a lot of #9 and #10 votes. So I don’t think it’ll win (though again, I’m not ruling it out). Precious will probably get less 9’s and 10’s, but I frankly don’t think it will get enough 1’s and 2’s to pull off a win. I think it’ll get mostly mid-range votes. Same goes for Up in the Air, though I imagine even that will get more 1’s and 2’s than Precious will.

So to sum it up, I think The Hurt Locker, while not an absolute, no-turning-back lock, is still the clear frontrunner in this race. If we’re talking about a potential upset though, why not really factor in the new preferential voting system and try to imagine how much that could end up benefiting a film like, say, Up? While it might not get too many #1 votes, I can easily see it getting a lot of 2-4 votes, and who know? If the frontrunners all develop strong enough backlashes, then it could be that this year’s Best Picture will go not to the movie that is the most liked, but rather the movie that is the least DISliked. Just saying.”
