Waiting on the NYFCC, No Guts, No Glory

Posted by Susan Thea Posnock On December - 10 - 2008

This is one tiny slice of awards season I rather like, this after ten wasted years on the sit.  When the NYFCC announce their winners they do so in mostly real time.  I do recall someone once on Indiewire getting their news before the website updated, but mostly we all just watch the site.  Perhaps we really need to get lives, eh?  Anyway, their website is all set up and ready for action.

Time for a quick round of our seasonal game.  Up to three guesses and they have to be bizarre.  I still don’t know how Damien Bona got Wall-E for Best Picture for LAFCA right because that was a No Guts, No Glory for all time.  Mine would be that The Dark Knight wins Best Picture and Director but I already have that as my official prediction.  And now it doesn’t seem so outlandish anymore.  Still–

Best Picture: Frozen River
Best Director: Courtney Hunt
Best Actor: Benicio Del Toro for Che

      Best Actress: Anne Hathaway
      Best Supporting Actor: Rosmarie DeWitt

Yay Sally Hawkins! I’m so thrilled. I don’t know if it’s NGNG since they already posted two winners, so I feel like I’m cheating, but I’m going with Mike Leigh for Director.

      Best Picture: Rachel Getting Married
      Best Actress: Anne Hathaway

    13. OmarS December 10th, 2008 at 9:30 am 13

Sorry to burst someones bubble, but the awards are already starting to be announced on the NYFCC website. I won`t say names, but best actress and screenplay were announced. They aren`t going for conventional.

    14. filmboymichael December 10th, 2008 at 9:32 am 14

OmarS – I would disagree with you, for the NYFCC, I would say that these awards so far are very much up their alley….

    15. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:32 am 15

Very happy for Ms. Hawkins. I hope they go with Kate W. for supporting. Best Pic will go to either The Dark Knight or Milk (or in light of below, Slumdog?).

    16. filmboymichael December 10th, 2008 at 9:32 am 16

      slumdog for cinematography!

    17. OmarS December 10th, 2008 at 9:33 am 17

…It appears I should have read the other posts.

    18. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:33 am 18

Best Cinematographer: Anthony Dod Mantle, Slumdog Millionaire (This could bode well for a Best Pic win)

    19. JR December 10th, 2008 at 9:33 am 19

Another undeserved win for Sally Hawkins.

    20. Rodrigo Costa December 10th, 2008 at 9:36 am 20

      Wow, that’s a great surprise.

    21. long time listener December 10th, 2008 at 9:36 am 21

Looks like they’re spreading the love around.

I still think best pic’s going to come out of left field. My NGNG is Waltz with Bashir – because that would just be crazy.

    22. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:36 am 22

JR, c´mon: Sally Hawkins delivered the best female performance of the year!

    23. FERGUS December 10th, 2008 at 9:38 am 23

GO ON SALLY HAWKINS DO YOUR FANS PROUD ONLY PESSIMISTIC WRIST SLASHERS DONT LIKE YOUR PERFORMANCE.

    24. Bing147 December 10th, 2008 at 9:40 am 24

I’ll disagree Dominik, I haven’t seen many contendors yet but she’s already my #7:

      1. Melissa Leo-Frozen River
      2. Rebecca Hall-Vicky Christina Barcelona
      3. Nicole Kidman-Australia
      4. Julianne Moore-Blindness
      5. Angelina Jolie-Changeling
      6. Frances McDormand-Burn After Reading
      7. Sally Hawkins-Happy Go Lucky

    25. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:41 am 25

      Admirable spoken, Fergus!

    26. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:42 am 26

Frances McDormand over Hawkins? Frances McDormand is not even remotely close to my list. Glad you enjoyed her, though.

I agree that Rebecca Hall was revelatory in “VCB.” I wish she’d get more recognition as well.

    27. filmboymichael December 10th, 2008 at 9:42 am 27

I can see Hawkins winning a bunch of critics prizes, but I don’t see her winning an oscar….

    28. Anthony December 10th, 2008 at 9:43 am 28

Josh Brolin win Supporting for “Milk”

    29. Cengiz December 10th, 2008 at 9:43 am 29

Best Supporting Actor: Josh Brolin for MILK

    30. Gregoire December 10th, 2008 at 9:43 am 30

Best Actor – Robert Downey Jr (Tropic Thunder & Iron Man)

    31. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:44 am 31

@ Bing: Nice to see Rebecca Hall on your list. It´s pretty unfair she gets barely any attention for it- the same for Bardem, by the way.
But Angelina Jolie? I don´t like performances that scream “Gimme the Oscar!”
And I spare all of us a word about Nicole Kidman, enough said.

    32. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:44 am 32

      Brolin…nice!

    33. The Revanchist December 10th, 2008 at 9:44 am 33

Is Joker just too out there of a character for some of these groups?

    34. Rod December 10th, 2008 at 9:44 am 34

      Josh Brolin wins supporting actor.

    35. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:44 am 35

Josh Brolin gets best supporting actor!!

    36. Erik Beck December 10th, 2008 at 9:45 am 36

I realize not predicting Wall-E isn’t so far off as they went with Persepolis over Ratatouille and Triplets over Finding Nemo.

    37. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:45 am 37

Oh dear, I´m too late to deliver news…

    38. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:45 am 38

Gregoire: is that a prediction? It’s not up on the site.

    39. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:46 am 39

@ Dorothy: I bet Downey Jr. was not a prediction, but a joke.

    40. Harry December 10th, 2008 at 9:46 am 40

      Bing147,

You didn’t even get Frances McDormand’s best performance of the year on your list. Her turn in Burn After Reading was just Raising Arizona redux. Now if you want to make a case for her work in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, the most underrated movie of the year, I’m all ears…

    41. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:46 am 41

      Cruel, Dominik, but funny :)

    42. Ivich December 10th, 2008 at 9:47 am 42

Anthony Dod Mantle gets his due for capturing some of the most bustling locales in Mumbai! Way to go!

    43. JR December 10th, 2008 at 9:47 am 43

      WALL-E FOR ANIMATED!!!!

    44. filmboymichael December 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am 44

Not surprised by Brolin for Milk….if you recall many uppity New York Film Critics weren’t thrilled with TDK.

    45. Jason December 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am 45

      Wall-E wins best animated film.

    46. Cengiz December 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am 46

      WALL-E Best Animated Film

    47. Harry December 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am 47

Brolin was good in Milk, but so was Franco. And I’m just not sure anyone not named Sean Penn in that movie had a substantial enough role to deserve recognition.

    48. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am 48

      Wall-E…SHOCKING! :P

    49. David Acacia December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 am 49

      WALL-E!!!

    50. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 am 50

Fingers crossed for Penn…but they might go with del Toro or Langella, methinks.

    51. Ivich December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 am 51

      Wall-E wins Animated.

    52. filmboymichael December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 am 52

Wall*E – in the animated category – where it belongs.

    53. Sam C. Mac December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 am 53

These are mostly gutsy, with one wishful thinking pick (that first one)

BEST FOREIGN FILM: “The Flight Of The Red Balloon”
      BEST SCREENPLAY: “The Dark Knight”
BEST ACTOR: Benicio Del Toro, “Che”

    54. RB December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 am 54

      Best Picture: Wall-E
      Best Director: David Fincher
      Best Screenplay: Rachel Getting Married

    55. FERGUS December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 am 55

THANK YOU DOMINIK. PEOPLE NEED TO REALISE THAT JUST BECAUSE THEY DIDNT LIKE THE CHARACTER THE PERFORMANCE WAS BAD. THATS WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE DOING.

    56. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 am 56

@ Dorothy: But don´t get me wrong: I really really like Downey Jr. a lot, but if they don´t give him a damn nomination for his brilliant performance in “Zodiac” they should NOT nominate him for a movie like “Tropic Thunder”!

    57. Harry December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 am 57

They already gave out screenplay to Jenny Lumet for Rachel Getting Married.

    58. Togo December 10th, 2008 at 9:51 am 58

Best Pic: Wall-E, Curious Case (it needs some love, and don’t we all?), or The Wrestler…I am getting weird vibes…
      Supp. Actress: Winslet, Reader
      Director: Fincher, CCB

Meh. Slumdog was great. It was essentially a live-action Wall-E set in Mumbai. If you really think about it…..so a win for one is a win for both on a platform of happy-go-lucky endings…happy endings will be embraced this year in the spirit of Obama.

    59. wiwoes (Spain) December 10th, 2008 at 9:51 am 59

      Picture: Milk
      Actor: Clint Eastwood
      Actress: Kate Winslet

    60. JR December 10th, 2008 at 9:51 am 60

      People need to catch up.

    61. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:52 am 61

I know that Poppy could be cloying, but I really enjoyed her. And I agree Fergus, it’s about the skill the actor brings to the role. For instance, Brando’s characters in “Last Tango in Paris” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” were grade-A a-holes, but it’s all about Brando’s considerable talent in bringing them to glorious life.

    62. FERGUS December 10th, 2008 at 9:52 am 62

People need to realise that Hawkins IS a serious contnder. Just because you didnt like her doesnt mean she wont win the GLobe, and if she continues to be the critics darling we have a situation like last year on our hands. Globe winner for Comedy/Musical, then BAFTA, then Oscar.

    63. JR December 10th, 2008 at 9:53 am 63

Slumdog Millionaire was a film that brought a smile to my face, not Happy-Go-Lucky.

    64. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 9:53 am 64

I’d be shocked if Cruz doesn’t get supporting, by the way.

    65. James December 10th, 2008 at 9:53 am 65

      SALLY HAWKINS!!!!

    66. Markku December 10th, 2008 at 9:54 am 66

      Best Supporting Actor: Josh Brolin

      And Ledger fans go nuts…

    67. filmboymichael December 10th, 2008 at 9:56 am 67

      I’d like to see Debra Winger’s name…

    68. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 9:57 am 68

@ Dorothy: Would be shocking if the award Kate Winslet instead of Penelope?

    69. Dorothy Porker December 10th, 2008 at 10:00 am 69

I’d love that Dominik. I’d really love that. So not shocking but rather thrilling :)

    70. David Acacia December 10th, 2008 at 10:02 am 70

Let’s have Martin Sheen for Best Actor.

    71. Dominik December 10th, 2008 at 10:08 am 71

I would be happy for Mickey Rourke.
He lost National Board to Clint, he lost LA for Sean Penn… now it´s his time!

    72. Michael Parsons December 10th, 2008 at 10:20 am 72

Best Supporting needs a shake up. Rosemarie DeWitt?

    73. Michael Parsons December 10th, 2008 at 10:23 am 73

      Mike Leigh!!!! YES!!!

    74. Haifa December 10th, 2008 at 10:24 am 74

      Mike Leigh for Director.

      Meh.

    75. Togo December 10th, 2008 at 10:24 am 75

      WTF LEIGH?

BP will come out of nowhere, it seems.

    76. Jim December 10th, 2008 at 10:25 am 76

Woo!! I’m thrilled with Mike Leigh for director. And not just because I picked him at 9:30. :) I admit I still haven’t seen a few real contenders like Benjamin Button and Frozen River, but from what I did see, Happy-Go-Lucky was my favorite movie of the year.

    77. Rodrigo Costa December 10th, 2008 at 10:28 am 77

      Mike Leigh and Sally Hawkins?

      I’m really enjoying this =]

    78. JUK December 10th, 2008 at 10:45 am 78

      Bravo Penélope!!!!!

      Who can stop her?

    79. Michael Parsons December 10th, 2008 at 10:58 am 79

No one really. Kate or Viola perhaps – but unlikely

    80. Barry December 10th, 2008 at 11:05 am 80

      Goofy picks:

      Best Picture: Waltz with Bashir
      Best Actor: Ben Kingsley, Elegy

    81. long time listener December 10th, 2008 at 11:21 am 81

Kate Winslet is coming up empty all over the place.
