Cyd Charisse has died.
No other dancer shook me awake as a kid like Cyd Charisse. No, I am not that old but in the ’70s my sister and I found ourselves obsessed with old Hollywood. Cyd Charisse was, to us, and other than Rita Hayworth, the sexiest woman alive. And much of that had to do with this particular dance number from Singin’ in the Rain. This one ain’t bad either. Even as a kid I knew I would never be Debbie Reynolds but I might very well be Cyd Charisse and wouldn’t you know it…She really was all that and a bag of chips. Rest in peace, you magnificent creature.

I also loved the “Dancing in the Dark” number from BAND WAGON. Some of Astaire’s best dancing, and Charisse matched him every step of the way. She will be missed.
Ashamed to admit the only Cyd Charisse movie I’ve ever seen is Singin’ in the Rain.
TCM will help me fill in some gaps in my education.

The Band Wagon – Monday (June 23) at 9:15 a.m. ET
Ahh, another RITA HAYWORTH fan. You too, Sasha? It makes perfect sense. As always, you’re a fabulous read.
CYD CHARISSE was the living bloody end.
She had more magnetism in her little finger than many of these current babes will ever have – in their entire bodies or NOT.
She was a beauty of majestic proportions and a mesmerizing classically trained dancer. She was magnificently talented. Impossible to look away. She moved like a lustrous exotic black cat.
Star quality is exceedingly rare. She had it in spades.
She will be missed greatly. There aren’t many like her.
Especially now.
I agree. I just remember her dancing numbers from ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ and I was in awe at her beauty & ability. I thought, “That’s a star”. I hope her later years were good to her.
she was not a good actress. She was just ok. However, she was beautiful and sultry. And the moment she started dancing…..she was heaven. “The Bandwagon” is her best film, despite a crying scene that always makes me giggle.
When I saw the crawl with her name on CNN I couldn’t place the actress, but good Lord, who could forget the woman in the green dress? She was a brilliant dancer. Sadly it seems as if Leslie Caron is one of the few dancers from that era still alive.
I love her scene in Singing in the Rain. One of my favorite films of all time, and that dance number is one of the greatest moments in the movie.
RIP.
for those who only list SINGIN IN THE RAIN as your connection to Cyd, go rent THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT AND THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT II. you’ll see her in several of her best scenes. it’s a great crash course on Cyd…and the other geniuses from the golden age of MGM musicals.
