Reel Geezers adore Slumdog Millionaire & Milk

Posted by Ryan Adams On December - 15 - 2008

These youtube review have been around for a couple of weeks, but somehow we’ve neglected to post them. As aggravating as the Reel Geezers can sometimes often be, these clips will make you want to hug them both. [Note: mild spoilers, but really nothing that we haven't seen discussed or alluded to in comments many times.]

I found their comments about both movies fairly astute and accurate. Do they vote in the Academy?

  2. ladylurks December 15th, 2008 at 11:18 pm 2

Yes, they’re both academy members. He was a screenwriter; I’ve forgotten what she did.

You didn’t link their review of The Dark Knight! I can’t imagine why not, other than the fact that they pretty much trash it.

Old news, Dan. Marcia lost me when she said she couldn’t figure out what was happening — and then a moment later she complained that TDK explained everything 5 times.

There are some movies 7-year-olds shouldn’t go see. And there are some movies 70-year-olds shouldn’t go see.

One wouldn’t expect the reelgeezers to love TDK. I guess that’s why they call themselves geezers.

Whether you agree with them or not, their comments are entertaining and insightful, not to mention a useful tool in attempting to gauge the taste of some Academy members.

  6. Chris December 16th, 2008 at 1:25 am 6

I think these two are great. They are insightful, they are entertaining, and they are voting Academy members. Even when I don’t agree with them, they give justifications for their opinions.

It’s amazing how they are able to name references and be on point and sharp at their age. Also, they are so delightful to watch!

  8. Bowie December 16th, 2008 at 3:22 am 8

By the way, anyone else notice what the frontrunners all have in common?

    Slumdog Millionaire
    Milk
    Wall-E
    Benjamin Button
    Frost/Nixon
    The Dark Knight
    The Wrestler

and what Doubt and Revolutionary Road, those rather falling by the wayside, don’t have?

Off Topic, but…Sasha and Ryan: Are you doing a SAG-prediction contest or something?
SAG-Noms are on thursday. They´ve always been a very good indicator concerning oscar-noms!

  10. Leisa December 16th, 2008 at 12:46 pm 10

Hey Ryan! We will be 70 one day (inshallah). And nobody is going to tell me that I’m too old to see anything.

  11. Sid December 16th, 2008 at 3:23 pm 11

Hmmm…….there were soooo uncomfurtable talking about Milk—forced—staged—skriped—lights—camera—action…. …..Scary….:/

  12. Dan December 16th, 2008 at 3:42 pm 12

    Ageist bullshit, Sid and Ryan.

  13. Sid December 16th, 2008 at 3:57 pm 13

    ….Babe, I was just giving my observation–i appologize if i offended you/anyone. Being a gay man, I sense fear like a dog–just a sense.

    Love,

    Sid in NorCal.

I think these two members are great. They posing a honest answer and opinion about the movies that are in contention for this year’s awards. I like their take on Milk.

  15. Carlos Balbás-Espín December 18th, 2008 at 12:30 pm 15

I disagree with their review of “The Dark Knight”, which is one of the best films of the year. However, calling them too old to appreciate it, or suggesting that they shouldn’t watch it because they’re too old like Ryan does, is low and cheap. I bet Clint Eastwood, Sidney Lumet and specially Manoel de Oliveira, would not only disagree, but feel offended. Moreover, it’s not impossible for a film to be both confusing and overly explicative. Asshole.

    @ Bowie:

Dude, what is it? It’s making crazy!

  16. Carlos Balbás-Espín December 18th, 2008 at 12:50 pm 16

LOL, it turns out that the old man worked on the Batman TV show of the 60’s, and even wrote the spin-off film, the one with the infamous exploding shark xD!

Now, talk about being almost morally bound to watch a film, LOL xD! I’ll just say it again: you’re an asshole Adams!
