2009: To see or not to see…

Posted by Ryan Adams On January - 5 - 2009

This week’s issue of EW touts 15 “Must-See Movies of 2009″ but I see at least six “Must-Miss” on their list. They do have a nice preview of Public Enemies, so here’s a quote with more photos after the cut.

You could say being an outlaw runs in Johnny Depp’s blood. After all, his grandfather ran moonshine on the back roads of Kentucky during Prohibition. So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the actor jumped at the chance to play John Dillinger in Public Enemies. ”Dillinger was one of those guys, like Charlie Chaplin and Evel Knievel, that I was fascinated with at a young age,” says Depp. ”And because of my grandfather, the character was pretty easy for me to connect to. In a way, this movie was a salute to him.”

PUBLIC ENEMIES (July 1)
TERMINATOR SALVATION (May 22)
THE UGLY TRUTH (April 4)
WHERE THE WILD THINGS (October 16)
WATCHMEN (March 6)
TAKING OF PELHAM 1-2-3 (June 12)
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (July 17)
JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE (Feb 27)
JULIE & JULIA (August 7
UP (May 29)
OBSESSED (April 24)
YEAR ONE (June 19)
LAND OF THE LOST (June 5)
WOLVERINE (May 1)
ANGELS & DEMONS (May 15)

1st to say the Watchmen should get nominated for Best Picture.

  2. The Dude January 5th, 2009 at 10:01 am 2

To be honest, most of this list is “must miss” to me. I’m only very interested in Watchmen and Public Enemies. And I’ll only watch 2 or 3 others.

It’s a pretty boring list — ‘Julie & Julia’ was the only film on there I didn’t know anything about.

By the way, Spike Jonze’s ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ has serious potential despite all of the production troubles. Even if it blows, I can’t wait to see it.

Where the hell is shutter island?

  5. Alesque January 5th, 2009 at 10:15 am 5

Meryl will have our hearts again in Julie and Julia. Strong chance considering the importance of biopic roles.

  6. Jonah January 5th, 2009 at 10:44 am 6

Shutter Island is Scorsese’s new film. Shot in Boston during the summer; I saw DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo at a Celtics game…

Public Enemies looks excellent. At last a chance to see the old Johnny Depp at work again. Perhaps he can finally show the average moviegoer what he is REALLY capable of.

As for the rest of the list? Some are solid choices like Watchmen and Where The Wild Things Are but The Jonas Brothers in 3-D? Seriously? And don’t get me started on Tony Scott’s butchering of The Taking of Pelham 123. The original is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable heist films of its time; no doubt the remake will be boring, heavy-handed nonsense.

And where the hell is Doctor Parnassus? Heath Ledger’s last film not good enough for you fools?

  8. Paul Outlaw January 5th, 2009 at 11:52 am 8

Bale x 2 once again and another year will go by without a Best Actor nomination…

  9. Mark January 5th, 2009 at 11:59 am 9

Possible Best Actor nomination for Johnny Depp?

  10. Ken January 5th, 2009 at 12:01 pm 10

This list is a joke, but the omission of Avatar is just absolutely ludicrous.

I can’t even think of an original movie with more anticipation around it this far out. You’d probably have to go back to Star Wars. In the 70s. Cameron has basically said the film is going to change Hollywood. He could be blowing smoke and the film could suck, but how could they leave it off the list of Must-See…?

  11. Anders January 5th, 2009 at 12:03 pm 11

I would personally like to add :

    This Side of the Truth
    The Road
    The Lovely Bones

  12. Jon January 5th, 2009 at 12:42 pm 12

Isn’t there a little film coming out called “Avatar” directed by that James Cameron guy?

  13. Daniel S-R January 5th, 2009 at 12:46 pm 13

If and when EW goes out of business, or to online-only, which I’d predict will happen in the next 5 years, these regular sneak preview lists and photos will be the things I miss most.

  14. Matt Mazur January 5th, 2009 at 12:52 pm 14

This issue was annoying — I look forward to it each year, as much as one can “look forward” to reading EW, for the predictions, which every other year in the past have had the cover.

Instead, we get Johnny Depp, in a highly touted “exclusive interview” that is five (simple-minded, general) questions.

    I call bullshit.

  15. dignanandmax January 5th, 2009 at 12:59 pm 15

I’m shocked that Inglourious Basterds was left off the list.

  16. Awsome January 5th, 2009 at 1:26 pm 16

Public Enemies and The Watchmen are gonna be awesome.

But, how can you not be excited Shutter Island and Inglorious Basterds. Scorsese and Tarentino in one year. Amazing

  17. Joe Calahan January 5th, 2009 at 4:45 pm 17

Can’t wait to see Public Enemies, Terminator Salvation, Angels and Demons, and more.

  18. Seankgallagher January 5th, 2009 at 8:27 pm 18

The ones I’m most excited for:

    THE ROAD
    PUBLIC ENEMIES
    SHUTTER ISLAND
    THE LOVELY BONES
    INGLORIOUS BASTARDS
    AVATAR
    WATCHMEN
    THE BROTHERS BLOOM
    BRUNO
    DUPLICITY

And, of course, I’ll see STATE OF PLAY, even though I’m quite nervous about it.

Oh, and Denzel needs to sever all ties with Tony Scott now. They have not made a single good movie together (yes, I thought CRIMSON TIDE was overrated), and to desecrate one of the best New York City movies ever made for their latest is just…there are no words.

  19. azahar January 6th, 2009 at 5:49 am 19

    the list are boring..
i am more excited to watch AMELIA – hilary swank in it – might be cool and hoping she’ll get best actress nod again and win again for the third time …

    hilary!!!

  20. SlumGod January 6th, 2009 at 6:58 am 20

Jonas Brothers, Ugly Truth, Up & Angels& Demons ahead of The Road, Shutter Island, Inglorious Bastards & Avatar?

Way to show your creds EW!

  21. elessar January 6th, 2009 at 9:48 am 21

Only 5 films on that list interest me:

    Public Enemies
    Watchmen
    Up
    Wolverine
    Where the Wild Things Are

Where the hell is Shutter Island? Avatar? Lovely Bones? The Road? etc…

Then again, EW was always known for being vapid.

  22. Elvira January 6th, 2009 at 7:12 pm 22

    Obsessed???
They must didn’t see the trailer for that movie…..It’s a wannabee Fatal Attraction meets Swimfan

“Awards don’t matter. Never have, never will. It is still possible, however, to follow the awards season and enjoy it as a spectator of the politics of Hollywood, which I relish in. As Manhola Dargis said, they’re bullshit but we love them anyway. I do not watch the Oscars to see my opinions validated, but that doesn’t stop me from smiling when my favorite films are recognized by anyone, be it this small organization or the Academy Awards

If you think the Oscars are a serious indication of quality then there are no two ways around it: You are an idiot.”
