Emmy Watch – Main Category Finalists

Posted by Susan Thea Posnock On June - 26 - 2008

Apparently, the Emmy committee folks have released the finalists for the main categories (thanks to the ever-efficient ONTD for the info). It is unprecedented, yes, but THAT surprising? Not really. Boston Legal, there’s a shocker! Grey’s Anatomy, no way! Desperate Housewives was shut out. Looks like my own favorite comedy, The New Adventures of Old Christine, is also off the list. Damages and Mad Men, though, seriously cool.

These will be narrowed down for the July 17 announcement.

COMEDY
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
The Office
Pushing Daisies
30 Rock
Two and a Half Men
Ugly Betty
Weeds

DRAMA
Boston Legal
Damages
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Grey’s Anatomy
House
Lost
Mad Men
The Tudors
The Wire

    Where’s Brothers & Sisters…????

Flight of the Conchords, are you joking..???

I still can’t figure it out the emmy love for Boston Legal…

  2. Ryan Adams June 26th, 2008 at 11:08 pm 2

JK, It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Brothers & Sisters is being punished for Sally Field daring to say, ““If the mothers ruled the world, there would be no goddamned war,” in her Fox network-censored acceptance speech last year.

I can totally understand Flight of the Conchords being among the finalists. It’s one of the most unique and consistently funny comedies on the list. What I’d like to know is whose two and half dicks Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer are sucking to insure the annual nominations for their weekly adventure in mediocrity.

  3. Kholby June 26th, 2008 at 11:41 pm 3

Where are The New Adventures of Old Christine and Brothers & Sisters…

And this was Desperate Housewives best season since the first…

    Stupid Emmy’s.

  4. srh1son June 27th, 2008 at 12:35 am 4

“The Wire” needs a nomination. But I’m not holding my breath. Stuff like “Damages” and “Mad Men” have more of the buzz behind them, rather than the final season of one of the greatest tv series ever.

  5. k June 27th, 2008 at 1:09 am 5

    FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS

    YIS

  6. Ryan Adams June 27th, 2008 at 2:04 am 6

    strewth, k

  7. Rob June 27th, 2008 at 2:30 am 7

I’m thrilled and unsurprised to see Mad Men there (I mean, duh), and thrilled and very surprised to see Flight of the Conchords there. Seriously JK, in what way does it not deserve to be there? It’s a true original. And maybe it’s just me, but I can’t bear Brothers and Sisters – I thought it was a much better show when it starred Peter Krause and was called Six Feet Under – so good call there, Emmy. The absence of Big Love is disappointing, though.

Now, what are everyone’s dream finalists from those lists? Mine:

    DRAMA
    Damages
    Dexter
    Friday Night Lights
    Mad Men
    The Wire

    COMEDY
    Flight of the Conchords
    The Office
    Pushing Daisies
    30 Rock
    Weeds

  8. Ryan Adams June 27th, 2008 at 2:48 am 8

    COMEDY

    Curb Your Enthusiasm
    Flight of the Conchords
    The Office
    30 Rock
    Weeds

(MIA: Californication, My Name is Earl)

    DRAMA

    Damages
    Dexter
    Mad Men
    The Tudors
    The Wire

    (MIA: Battlestar Gallactica, Big Love)

  9. RichardA June 27th, 2008 at 4:20 am 9

Just hoping for Friday Night Lights to show up in the top 5.

  10. Ryan Adams June 27th, 2008 at 4:23 am 10

    Friday Night Lights…
I probably need to watch an episode of that sometime.

  11. Terra June 27th, 2008 at 4:29 am 11

    Strewth, Ryan? Wrong country, mate

  12. Walt Gamble June 27th, 2008 at 5:11 am 12

Actually the finalists were leaked early last year too.
30 Rock, Curb and Lost are the shows that I care about getting there. Seriosly, Family Guy? If this was 2002 then that would be cool, but now?

  13. Ryan Adams June 27th, 2008 at 5:33 am 13

My Engrish knows no borders, Terra. 8-)
(damned etymological limitations of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.)

  14. w.j. June 27th, 2008 at 6:17 am 14

Sorry Walt Gamble. I hate to say it, like the rest of you closeted fans who won’t own up to it, but Family Guy consistently makes me laugh out loud. It’s rude, obnoxious, and everything that’s politically incorrect–but it’s classic television, and not just in 2002. This show is overdue for an Emmy.

  15. Walt Gamble June 27th, 2008 at 8:40 am 15

w.j., I’m not a closeted fan, I have my family guy dvds sitting on top shelf, it’s just I don’t see how, at it’s current level it could be seen as top television, just like The Simpsons is my favourite show, but these days it’s just a pile of crap. Every show hits its used by date and family guy has passed its.

  16. Alfredo June 27th, 2008 at 11:07 am 16

I think its awesome that Family Guy is there but if any animated series should be up for a nomination it should be South Park. After 10 years it still remains consistantly funny and socially relevant.
Flight of the Concords is hilarious but I’m an Entourage kinda guy, LOST is my crack, and I fully plan on getting Mad Men on DVD.

    My Dream Nominations would be:
    COMEDY
    Curb Your Enthusiasm
    Entourage
    The Office
    30 Rock
    Weeds

    DRAMA
    Damages
    Dexter
    Mad Men
    The Tudors
    The Wire

(If The Wire gets a nomination I might be able to forgive the EMMYs for snubbing BUFFY)

  17. Wael June 27th, 2008 at 11:54 am 17

I will not… will not speak a word. I am simply holding my breath. I don’t like football and yet I heart heart heart something on that list. I won’t speak it’s name. But my eyes are closed and for two weeks my breath will be partially held. I have seen the Emmys snub my favorite shows time and time again (Buffy, once and again, How I met your mother…I am getting flashback pains) and now this carrot is being dangled in front of my face…. I can’t bare it!

Come on Emmys DO IT DOOOO IT. I didn’t watch you last year for that very reason. Give me something to watch come that Sunday in September… please!

  18. yvette June 27th, 2008 at 12:39 pm 18

The Tudors is the best show this year on television. The actors, the story, the costumes etc… The performances were second to none. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Natalie Dormer both deserve emmy nods.

  19. Joshua June 27th, 2008 at 1:17 pm 19

I hope Grey’s Anamoty & House get shut out. C’mon are these shows going to be nominated everytime, and what the hell is up with Boston Legal. People need to get real.

Where’s Big Love & the great new series In Treatment. I just don’t understand. I’m happy for all the finalists on the comedy list. Also, big supporter of The Tudors & Lost. Hope they get nominated.

  20. Anderson June 27th, 2008 at 1:45 pm 20

So happy to see Damages- the show needs some good press so people dont forget how great the season was so they remember that seasons 2 and 3 are coming up (months and months ahead)

I hope the whole show gets love- Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Zeljko Ivanek and Ted Danson- as well as writing. Will Close and Byrne both be considered leading actresses? The Globes split them up, but the show follows both characters equally (if not more on the Byrne side)

  21. Good Ole Boy June 27th, 2008 at 2:18 pm 21

The Wire needs a nod seriously. Season 5 was probably its weakest season though. If 1, 3, or 4 didn’t get a nod, season 5 probably won’t. Oh well, the emmys will just continue to lose credibilty for barely recognizing one of the greatest shows in history.

  22. jennybee June 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm 22

I’m glad Lost is in there with all those other dramas I keep meaning to watch. Too little time!

  23. alynch June 27th, 2008 at 6:25 pm 23

My opinion of the final Emmys will live or die by whether they nominate The Wire for best drama. It is as simple as that.

  24. Friedl June 28th, 2008 at 5:48 am 24

They will nominate The Wire. Its their last chance. & it has alot of buzz at the moment.

    But then again…
Well, I could care less, really. You only need to watch the Emmys about once every 5 years. Its like soap operas. Nothing really changes. Any developments are at an extremely slow pace.

I’m a huge fan of House, but please please I hope they don’t nominate House & Grey’s Anatomy again. Really. Nominate them when they’re due.

If they overlook the Wire & nominate Greys, again, they will literally lose all credibility with anyone over 15.
Or at least I’ll make sure they lose credibilty with everyone I meet & talk to.

  25. Free June 28th, 2008 at 7:58 am 25

Come onnnnnnnnnn Friday Night Lights and The Wire!

  26. Jaime June 29th, 2008 at 9:34 pm 26

    Wishlist:

Comedy: 30 Rock, The Office, Flight of the Conchords, Weeds, I couldn’t care less about the last one. With 30 Rock winning.
Drama: Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Lost, Mad Men, The Wire. With Mad Men or The Wire winning (though any of them winning would be deserved and great).

  27. Paul Outlaw June 29th, 2008 at 10:46 pm 27

    Damages
    Dexter
    Lost

“I caught The Hurt Locker again last night. What a great film. Kathryn Bigelow is probably the most deserving of the nominees. I think if Cameron does pull off the upset, I don’t think sexism will be the problem. I think box office receipts and a concern with AMPAS trying to be “relevant” with the general public will be the actual result. Which brings me to this issue:

I do not understand why some critics out there think that the Academy should pick films that are more mainstream? I heard a commentator the other day saying that the 2008 (No Country for Old Men) ceremony was one of the most boring telecasts in the Academy’s history. Yes, it had their lowest ratings ever. But even if this makes me come off as snobbish, that explanation is a bunch of horseshit. 2007 was a great year in movies, and if LCD (lowest common denominator) critics and audiences don’t like it, tough.

Since I consider myself a film buff, it doesn’t bother me when the Academy pick films that general audiences may have a problem with. Let us be honest, your average film goer usually does not have the greatest taste in the world. And “difficult” films are usually more profound and original.

On a side note, I finally got around to seeing Julie & Julia this morning. Meryl Streep SHOULD NOT win the Oscar this year. That performance was ok, but not her greatest. Her performance in Doubt was a lot better. Mulligan and Sidibe should be the two actresses vying for the award, but that certainly is not the case. Honestly, I think I will be disappointed if Streep or Bullock win this year. Neither performance was that spectacular, in relation to the competition.”
