      Most Egregious Asshat: Jason Alexander

    2. David Giancarlo January 8th, 2009 at 8:16 pm 2

      I love Milk!

    3. Zwingli the Miffed January 8th, 2009 at 8:19 pm 3

I think the crying shame about Milk is that Emile Hirsch isn’t getting the awards love that he deserves. He stole a lot of that movie.

    4. murtada January 8th, 2009 at 8:20 pm 4

milk is the best movie of the year

    5. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:21 pm 5

This ceremony is very…uncomfortable. None of the celebrities want to talk to any of the correspondents. Oh and did we really expect Sean Penn to show up?

    6. Shadowfax32 January 8th, 2009 at 8:21 pm 6

Mickey Rourke was not amused by Jason’s remarks. I thought he was going to punch him out.

    7. Gentle Benj January 8th, 2009 at 8:22 pm 7

Take a few points off Sean Penn’s Oscar chances. Gotta show up to these things.

    8. Bob Burns January 8th, 2009 at 8:22 pm 8

      Damn, that made me happy!

      Hirsch is God.

    9. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:22 pm 9

      wow Dev Patel looks gorgeous!

    10. Gregoire January 8th, 2009 at 8:23 pm 10

I think you can safely skip the Critics Choice Awards if you’re a celebrity.

    11. SaltireFlower January 8th, 2009 at 8:24 pm 11

GO DEV! Wish he was there though.

    12. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 8:24 pm 12

Yeah Emile Hirsch really was great… I think he should take the place in the awards race that James Franco has had.

I couldn’t believe Brolin’s comment, “As opposed to Ben Stiller’s sarcasm, this award really DOES Matter!”

and WHAT just happened with Rosemary DeWitt!

    13. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:25 pm 13

You guys hear the applause for “The Dark Knight”

    14. Jake January 8th, 2009 at 8:29 pm 14

Wow. The applause for ‘The Dark Knight’ was almost as loud as the ones for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

    15. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:31 pm 15

Sally Hawkins can play Amy Winehouse in a movie.

    16. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 8:32 pm 16

“Sally Hawkins can play Amy Winehouse in a movie”

      I was JUST thinking that

    17. Deniz January 8th, 2009 at 8:32 pm 17

what applause, i dont have the channel. Tell me :D

    18. Dan January 8th, 2009 at 8:33 pm 18

It’s not being carried in Vancouver, so I’m relying on you guys, and Mark Ramsey’s twitterings, to know what’s going on. But, this does look sort of Slumdoggy after all.

    19. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 8:35 pm 19

      Slumdog!

    20. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 8:36 pm 20

Bwahaha, I’m too scared to look at the wank that’s probably going on in the forums over Slumdog. LOVE IT!

    21. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm 21

As if they were gonna give best action movie to any other film besides The Dark Knight…so when do we get to the important categories? LOL

    22. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm 22

Did Christopher Nolan really just NOT mention Heath Ledger’s name…

    23. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm 23

      One for TDK!

    24. Gentle Benj January 8th, 2009 at 8:39 pm 24

Did he just call Kristen Bell “Christian Bale”?

    25. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 8:41 pm 25

Nolan: “we shot all over the place”
summing up fanboy reaction across the globe.

    26. Gentle Benj January 8th, 2009 at 8:41 pm 26

      Nolan did mention Ledger’s name.

    27. SaltireFlower January 8th, 2009 at 8:41 pm 27

That’s what I thought Gentle Benj. For a second I was staring at Kirsten Bell and wondering why she had boobs.

    28. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 8:41 pm 28

:sigh: really wished Forgetting Sarah Marshall won

    29. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:44 pm 29

geez could we atleast hear some of the music pieces?!

aaand Slumdog wins. Wasn’t it mostly just a soundtrack in Slumdog?

    30. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 8:44 pm 30

Holy shit, Rahman winning an award at an American awards show.

      THIS IS A BIG DEAL.

    31. JR January 8th, 2009 at 8:45 pm 31

How many awards do they plan on rewarding Slumdog?. I mean really?

    32. Dorothy Porker January 8th, 2009 at 8:46 pm 32

God, I can’t stand Katy Perry.

    33. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 8:46 pm 33

Poor Aronofsky. “I don’t know who you are.”

    34. Noah R. January 8th, 2009 at 8:47 pm 34

I thought Katy Perry was perfectly charming until just now when she basically snubbed Darren Aronofsky right in front of him. I don’t care if you don’t know who he is, don’t say it! Have you no manners?

      Love his ’stache though.

    35. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:47 pm 35

BRRUUUUUUCE! LOL you can tell the audience had no idea who Darren Aronofsky is – kinda sad but he seemed to take it in stride.

    36. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 8:47 pm 36

This has got to be the least professional awards shows I’ve ever seen. Christopher Mintz-Plasse not knowing who Darren Aronofsky is? really?!

    37. JR January 8th, 2009 at 8:48 pm 37

Nobody knew who Aronofsky was. There goes his oscar nod. LOL
      YAY for BRUCE!!!!

    38. Lee January 8th, 2009 at 8:48 pm 38

Hah. Sean Penn is there. He was probably at the bar. These events require alcohol, or so he says.

    39. Gentle Benj January 8th, 2009 at 8:49 pm 39

      Katy Perry went deSPLAT.

My “highest-rated film” ballot of predictions is currently 4 for 7. Not awful, but not special.

    40. Noah R. January 8th, 2009 at 8:49 pm 40

Yeah I’d need a few glasses of wine in order to get through one of these.

    41. nic January 8th, 2009 at 8:50 pm 41

haha i highly acclaimed director who directed one of the years best films and best picture contenders and is also engaged to an a list actress just got dissed by mclovin…

    42. Elvis January 8th, 2009 at 8:50 pm 42

Gentle Benj, Sean was there he just didn’t go up to accept the award.

    43. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 8:50 pm 43

I can’t see… what they did with Aronofsky??

    44. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 8:51 pm 44

Why does it sound like the orchestra* is trying to play the presenters off the stage?

      *The MP3 Symphony Orchestra.

    45. Noah R. January 8th, 2009 at 8:52 pm 45

Man on Wire just won and they played a piece originally used for a Peter Greenaway film. My fanboyism has just gone off.

    46. Jahanzeb January 8th, 2009 at 8:52 pm 46

      A. R. Rahman for Slumdog, ohhhhhh man, this is awesome. it made my day. though sad that “Jai ho” from Slumdog could not make it in best song category.

    47. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:54 pm 47

Best Supporting Actor! Come on Heath!!!

    48. Phil January 8th, 2009 at 8:54 pm 48

@Alfredo: “Wasn’t it mostly just a soundtrack in Slumdog?”

Yeah… it was mostly popular music used for the soundtrack. I honestly don’t remember any of the original score from that movie. This is just an example of SM winning awards just because it’s the frontrunner.

    49. Joao Mattos January 8th, 2009 at 8:55 pm 49

I’m not in US and cant find a place on the wen to see it live. So, after the end of the cerimony, could someone explain here this “Darren Aronofsky” affair??

    50. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 8:55 pm 50

      Alex Pizziolo & Joao,

Aronofsy ran to the stage to accept the award for Bruce Springsteen’s song, and the presenter said, “I don’t know who he is.”

I’d tell you her name, but I don’t know who she is.

    51. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 8:57 pm 51

      There. It. Went.

Heath’s Oscar is cemented (or at least it will be when he wins the Globe on Sunday)

    52. Joao Mattos January 8th, 2009 at 8:57 pm 52

OMG that is so stupid. And the presenter is Kate Perry, that singer? Weird…..

    53. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 8:57 pm 53

      Standing O for Heath Ledger!!!

    54. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 8:57 pm 54

Yeah… it was mostly popular music used for the soundtrack.

Paper Planes is the only song that wasn’t composed originally for the movie.

And Heath’s Oscar win has been cemented for weeks now. That’s the only 100% win this year.

    55. Dorothy Porker January 8th, 2009 at 8:58 pm 55

      Standing O. Awesome.

    56. amanda January 8th, 2009 at 8:58 pm 56

This win doenst really cement Health Oscar, since this award really doesnt mean anything, but he is still winning the oscar anyways.

    57. Di January 8th, 2009 at 8:58 pm 57

ohgosh, i cant wait for ‘Actress ‘ .. meryl *.* XDDD

    58. ajnrules January 8th, 2009 at 8:59 pm 58

Aww, it pains me to not have VH1, but I’m really for Heath Ledger and his family.

    59. Phil January 8th, 2009 at 8:59 pm 59

I had never heard of “Paper Planes” until the Pineapple Express trailer, so forgive me if I assumed all of the other pop-sounding music was just radio rubbish that I hadn’t heard yet.

    60. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 9:00 pm 60

Remember when people used to say the only recognition The Dark Knight earned would be for Heath Ledger?

    61. Free January 8th, 2009 at 9:00 pm 61

I didn’t have much of a problem when TDK was out in theatres, but seeing Heath being nominated and winning without him being there is bringing back those sad emotions. I wish he could have seen what an impact he made.

    62. amanda January 8th, 2009 at 9:00 pm 62

As much as I would love it to happen, Meryl isnt winning, the critics didnt like her very much. I say Hathaway wins…which makes my head hurt.

    63. Lala January 8th, 2009 at 9:01 pm 63

      amanda,
      you make no sense

    64. sonnymoscoso January 8th, 2009 at 9:01 pm 64

      FUCKIN’ A!

    65. dela January 8th, 2009 at 9:02 pm 65

Ryan, now if we could just bump Frost/Nixon form the line up and replace it with Wall-E.

    66. Gentle Benj January 8th, 2009 at 9:02 pm 66

I got misty-eyed when Heath Ledger won. Dang.

I think my favorite part of awards shows is when the winner is walking up and they play the music from the movie. I got the chills hearing the music from Man On Wire again. The lady who accepted for that film did a great job, too.

“Highest-rated” ballot is now 6 for 9. Better.

    67. Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:02 pm 67

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger??? WTF?

    68. SaltireFlower January 8th, 2009 at 9:03 pm 68

That was a wonderful speech that Christopher Nolan gave.

    69. Evan January 8th, 2009 at 9:03 pm 69

      Di- Why so surprised?

    70. D January 8th, 2009 at 9:03 pm 70

Yeah Ryan…and they were right. That’s pretty much all it’s going to win.

    71. sonnymoscoso January 8th, 2009 at 9:05 pm 71

      im not in the us
      WHAT DID NOLAN SAID?

    72. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 9:05 pm 72

      Who accepted the Heath’s award?

    73. D January 8th, 2009 at 9:06 pm 73

      Alex,

Nolan accepted the award. Eckhart was one of the co-presenters.

    74. Dorothy Porker January 8th, 2009 at 9:06 pm 74

Ok, I’m outraged…I haven’t seen “I’ve Loved You So Long” yet, but did they just give away a big part of the plot???

    75. Lucio January 8th, 2009 at 9:06 pm 75

      http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ9RfeOTY64&feature=channel_page

    76. Ani Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:06 pm 76

      Heath ledger!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!!
Slumbitch Millionaire Awards! Just looking for Best Bitchure of the year and the best Bitcherector.

MERYL OR HATHAWAY OR LEO?? WHO? MERYL? SURE? WAIT, JOLIE! NO…WHO?

    77. Dan January 8th, 2009 at 9:07 pm 77

      OH yay! Yay, I say!

    78. dela January 8th, 2009 at 9:07 pm 78

Dorothy, I hit the mute button when it came on screen. I knew they were going to do this.

    79. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 9:08 pm 79

      Thanks!

    80. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 9:08 pm 80

      Christopher Nolan accepted Heath’s award

and Waltz With Bashir wins best Foreign Film! Very very interesting! I wanted A Christmas Tale to win, but I haven’t seen Waltz yet. Oh man, if Wall-E hadn’t come out this year, Waltz would have the animated Oscar in the bag.

    81. Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:09 pm 81

somebody saw the error today on golden globe site?? The name of Anne Hathaway was with a star, it means she is the winner!! o_O The star was removed a short time later. sh*t

    82. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 9:10 pm 82

      Winslet finally wins something.

    83. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 9:10 pm 83

KATE! Omigod. I did not expect that. I LOVE it!

    84. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 9:11 pm 84

Winslet wins it! I so called that one! I think anyone who thinks Winslet isn’t a lock at this point is very mistaken

    85. SaltireFlower January 8th, 2009 at 9:11 pm 85

What elixir of of life does Angela Basset have? She looks younger every time I see her.

    86. Dorothy Porker January 8th, 2009 at 9:11 pm 86

      YES YES YES. Go Kate!

    87. Ama January 8th, 2009 at 9:11 pm 87

      AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

      Kate Winslet!!!!!!!

    88. Kaio January 8th, 2009 at 9:11 pm 88

I thought that Gomorra will be the winner in best foreign language filme. And i think that the three nominees to best animated film,in Oscar, will be Wall•E,Kung-Fu Panda and Bolt.

    89. jorge January 8th, 2009 at 9:13 pm 89

      GO ANGIEEE GOOOO, CROSSED FINGERS

    90. Charles January 8th, 2009 at 9:14 pm 90

Kate was really fantastic in The Reader. I’m so glad she’s getting attention!

    91. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 9:14 pm 91

      UHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
      KATE!!!!!!!!!

    92. Kel January 8th, 2009 at 9:14 pm 92

Woot! Kate Winslet! I think it’s a fair thing to say the Oscar is between her and Penelope Cruz with Viola Davis still a slight possibility.

    93. Ani Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:14 pm 93

KATE WINNING!!!!!… IN THE WRONG CATEGORY!!!

    94. Pablo January 8th, 2009 at 9:15 pm 94

Kate’s win is a huge surprise. YAY !!!

    95. Lucio January 8th, 2009 at 9:16 pm 95

Winslet won, because she wasnt nominated for actress, and she was nominated three times before…i still think cruz will pick up the Oscar…

    96. dela January 8th, 2009 at 9:16 pm 96

If Kate walks away with the supporting Oscar, does that mean Meryl wins the lead?
      I hope so.

    97. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 9:17 pm 97

Ani Di, she can still win in that other category. Would be glorious.

Though for me her performance in The Reader was the stronger of the two. Then again I would probably give her an award for reading a phone book.

      Wall-E wins!

    98. The Natural January 8th, 2009 at 9:17 pm 98

Superb. Kate was wonderful in “The Reader.”

    99. RRA is a Critic January 8th, 2009 at 9:19 pm 99

Ledger has been called a lock win since July, and so far nothing seems to indicate that this won’t be the case.

Good for TDK getting the overall category win.

    100. Gentle Benj January 8th, 2009 at 9:22 pm 100

If Kate Winslet wins the Globe too, I think she’s got it.

With Composer and Writer under its belt, it seems like Slumdog is gonna be the big winner tonight. If Nolan wins Director, it could change, but Slumdog is out front.

If Slumdog does end up winning Best Picture, then I think Dev Patel’s Oscar nod is locked.

    101. Hans January 8th, 2009 at 9:23 pm 101

Ugh, I can smell a Slumdog win from a mile away.

    102. Rod January 8th, 2009 at 9:23 pm 102

Yah for Kate — just awesome

    103. MHF89 January 8th, 2009 at 9:24 pm 103

      Anne Hathaway…Best Actress —-
Penelope Cruz….Best Supporting Actress—she was amazing in her piece of the film,
Best Actor….Mickey Rourke He has to win it… really a great performance

    104. Ama January 8th, 2009 at 9:26 pm 104

Gere better watch out. Josh Brolin did not look to happy watching him drool over his wife. That was a little weird

    105. Nick January 8th, 2009 at 9:28 pm 105

I still think ‘Waltz with Bashir’ will garner at least a nomination…

      I’m predicting a Dark Knight upset. I hope I’m right…

    106. Seth January 8th, 2009 at 9:31 pm 106

Go Kate Winslet!!! Go for the gold girl!

    107. Chris January 8th, 2009 at 9:32 pm 107

I love the standing ovation for Heath, and Josh Brolin whistling and cheering him on for it. Fully deserved, in my opinion.

    108. Alfredo January 8th, 2009 at 9:37 pm 108

      A freaking Tie!!!

    109. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 9:37 pm 109

A tie? WTF? Has that happened before?

    110. Ama January 8th, 2009 at 9:38 pm 110

      Tie!!!!!

    111. Ricky January 8th, 2009 at 9:38 pm 111

Holy crap a tie! and Anne Hathaway!!! Jeez

    112. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 112

A tie? I’d say LAME, but hee Devil Wears Prada reunion. If only Streep was there! Oh man.

    113. SaltireFlower January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 113

OMG. WOW. Meryl and Anne. It would have been great if Meryl had been there in person to accept it with Anne.

    114. Lucio January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 114

Penelope Cruz….Best Supporting Actress—she was amazing in her piece of the film

    115. Charles January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 115

      TIE????

      dwp redux

    116. Gregoire January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 116

Hmm, Anne vs Meryl vs Kate now?

    117. Ani Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 117

Amy Adams and Michelle WIlliams in 2006…tie in suppoting actress.

      YEP I LOVE TIES!!!!!!!!!!!

      Meryl and Hathaway…that’s funny!

    118. Nick January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 118

Ama, if there’s something we all learned from “No Country for Old Men”, it’s don’t fuck with Josh Brolin.

    119. RB January 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm 119

      Best Actress got trickier.

    120. michael January 8th, 2009 at 9:40 pm 120

      What I learned from watching:

      1. David Carr is Miley Cyrus with slightly more facial hair.

      2. Jenny Lumet is my new “most objectionable person on earth” nominee. And being fetted for the “(blank) is the new jocelyn bride of wildenstein” honor. Jenny, to quote Kitty Farmer (Donnie Darko): “… you need to go back to grad school.” (i.e.: your screenplay sucked)

      3. Tom O’Neil is so sad – that he thinks he’s BREAKING the HUGE news that the SHOCKER of the year is The Dark Knight may “slip in”. Honey, go home and watch Dreamgirls extras and leave us alone.

      4. Lisa Shwarzbaum is always full of grace and one of the few gems left out there.

    121. amanda January 8th, 2009 at 9:40 pm 121

I am both happy and sad for the tie.

    122. Lee January 8th, 2009 at 9:41 pm 122

There was a tie in 2005. Amy Adams and Michelle Williams for Supporting Actress.

Last I saw a tie was between Michelle Williams and Amy Adams for Best Supporting Actress

    124. Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:41 pm 124

      TIE???/ WHAT?????

    125. Pablo January 8th, 2009 at 9:41 pm 125

Tie me down ! A tie !!!! This is awesome. Oscar winner is so in the shadows right now.

    126. Alex Pizziolo January 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm 126

      OMG!
      A TIE?????

    127. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 9:43 pm 127

      Viola Davis is adorable.

And Anne Hathaway gave a very very “Hey Oscar you WANT ME to win” speech.

    128. Ani Di January 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm 128

Guys, I’m in Brazil, don’t have BFCA live on tv!

Describe me the Hathaway/Streep winning speech!! Please!

    129. Ama January 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm 129

Anne Hathaway would not shut up. I was going to comment on how nice it was that they let people speak unlike another show, but she needed the music.

But I am happy for her but look forward to Kate Winslet winning on sunday at the globes

    130. KJS January 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm 130

Wow! I swear to God people….the thought of an Anne & Meryl tie popped up in my head earlier this evening. Now if i could only have that happen with the winning lottery numbers.

    131. dela January 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm 131

Nice tribute to Meryl Streep. Two soon-to-be Oscar nominees saying wonderful things about you!

    132. SaltireFlower January 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm 132

      LOL. Viola Davis is hilarious.

    133. HaroldsMaude January 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm 133

I love ties. And can I just say that Viola Davis is my new favorite celebrity.
The last 5 minutes just picked up the show.

    134. slayton January 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm 134

Anne’s speech was nice. Shame Sally wasn’t nominated, though. Kristin, too.

      Lowlights so far:
      Jason Alexander
The fact that the show is sponsored by Wal-Mart.
      The awkward, glum house band.
      Shitty winners.
Giving away the major plot point of “I’ve Loved You So Long”.

      Highlights:
The look on Marisa Tomei’s face when the John Adams director praised George Bush (probably without meaning to).
The John Adams director saying “So many cast members I can’t rememb- can’t list them here”.
      Amanda Bynes’s angry, angry scowl.

    135. frederic lyon January 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm 135

Anne Hathaway will win at the GG (their site already announced her win by mistake !), and at the Oscars.

    136. Charles January 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm 136

ok, now who will win actor?

    137. Nick January 8th, 2009 at 9:50 pm 137

Wow, didn’t see this tie coming.

But a lesson I learned from ‘Doubt’ that might come up in the Oscars:
      Don’t fuck with Meryl Streep.

Huh, I guess you don’t fuck with a lot of people in Hollywood, do you?

    138. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 9:51 pm 138

      Jai Ho! Yay Danny Boyle!

      Come on Slumdog Millionaire!

    142. michael January 8th, 2009 at 9:52 pm 142

Why is Ryan Adams so vulgar?
Those tacky jokes sound like Paul Lynde at the end of the bar, dribbling in his gimlet. Yuck.

@ Frederic Lyon – a correction was issued on that …

      For The Record

HOLLYWOOD, CA, January 8, 2009 – In the process of preparing for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association web team inadvertently marked a nominee as a winner. The mistake was immediately corrected.

The winners of the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at The Beverly Hilton with a live telecast airing on NBC at 8 p.m. (EST).”

    146. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 9:59 pm 146

      YES! SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!!! WOO!!!!

The winners tonight have been fantastic!

    147. Ama January 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm 147

      3 way Tie— LOL

The academy should mail the oscar to Danny Boyle now

    148. Free January 8th, 2009 at 10:02 pm 148

I know people are tired of seeing SLUMDOG win everything, but if I had a ballot, I’d vote for it, too. It’s good. I’d still give director to Nolan, though.

    149. KJS January 8th, 2009 at 10:05 pm 149

Wow!! I swear to God people the thought of a Meryl & Anne tie popped in my head eariler this evening. Now if that could only happen with winning lottery numbers i’d be THRILLED!

    150. Charles January 8th, 2009 at 10:05 pm 150

for those of us not watching… what did Viola Davis do?

    151. Sasha Stone January 8th, 2009 at 10:12 pm 151

It’s fine for Slumdog to win – just because it’s become boring doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve it.

    152. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 10:24 pm 152

Charles, Viola Davis accepted Meryl Streep’s award. She improvised a speech she imagined Meryl might make, thanking various people.

At the end Viola said, “And Meryl would especially thank me.”

    153. suarez January 8th, 2009 at 10:27 pm 153

The low Metacritic score may have portended Benjamin Button’s coming up empty?

    154. sonnymoscoso January 8th, 2009 at 10:31 pm 154

      no big surprises…
great to see TDK get some recognition… and love from the crowd…

sorry, i dont remember, but since some are complaining about slumdog swipping everything, was NO COUNTRY’s situation boring too then? cause i dont remember reading any complaints back then…

    155. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 10:33 pm 155

It was nice seeing an actual awards show with these winners. I mean most of them have been popping up here and there, but all we’ve gotten to see are the names.

But with the speeches and the actual people receiving the awards, it’s a nice start. Congratulations to Slumdog Millionaire (woo!), Kate Winslet (yeah!), Heath Ledger (whee!), and everyone else who won. But those three in particular I’ll be rooting for in the Oscars.

    156. Sebastian January 8th, 2009 at 10:33 pm 156

      Cool Choices !

    157. Sasha Stone January 8th, 2009 at 10:33 pm 157

Sonny, there were plenty of No Country complainers. Believe me.

    158. James January 8th, 2009 at 10:35 pm 158

Very predictable winners except for the tie. Great for Slumdog, my favorite movie, as I indicated in your predict the globes ballot. I hope Mickey Rourke wins at the Oscars, that’ll make it less boring!

“HOLLYWOOD, CA, January 8, 2009 – In the process of preparing for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association web team inadvertently marked a nominee as a winner. The mistake was immediately corrected.” —- I don’t buy this, looks like Anne Hathaway’s win was already leaked, HFPA promised last year a bigger, better and stronger show this year, and now they come up with a blunder!

    159. Markie27 January 8th, 2009 at 10:35 pm 159

      The Best Picture locks:
      Slumdog Millionaire – 5
      Milk – 2
      The Dark Knight – 2

      On shaky ground:
      Benji Button – 0
      FroNix – 0

      The Spoilers:
      Doubt – 1
      WALL-E – 1
      The Wrestler – 1
The Reader (or should i say Kate Winslet) – 1
      Rachael Getting Married – 1

I believe all the major awards would revolve around these ten films
(with the exception of Kate winning for RR instead of Reader) come Oscar time.

I really really love MILK but i wouldn’t be disappointed (or “crashed”) if TDK or Slumdog would take home the oscar…. all three films deserve the title BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR.

    160. Bobby C January 8th, 2009 at 10:37 pm 160

Slam dunk for Slumdog with 5 wins!! Multiple wins for The Dark Knight and Milk make these three movies the frontrunners!! Funny when Dustin Hoffman joked about 3-way tie for Best Picture. I especially loved the acting awards– Sean, Meryl, Anne, Heath and Kate. I wished Meryl and Kate AND Heath were there!

    161. Chris January 8th, 2009 at 10:37 pm 161

Such a predictable awards show. However, this year may be like 2005 and have an upset with a different winner at the last minute. Sort of like in 2005 when Brokeback Mountain was expected to win, but Crash won instead. As long as Benjamin Button doesn’t win, I’m fine with whatever. Although I admit, the Slumdog praise is getting a little out of hand, as good a movie it is.

    162. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 10:38 pm 162

“The low Metacritic score may have portended Benjamin Button’s coming up empty?”

      One might think, suarez.
But on the BFCA’s own website, here’s how they rate:

      91 Benjamin Button
      92 Slumdog
      92 The Wrestler
      96 The Dark Knight

metacritic critics don’t have much overlap with the broadcast film critics.

    163. Melanie January 8th, 2009 at 10:41 pm 163

I would actually like to see the Academy come up with Kate Winselt in Actress for the Reader, as they did with Leo and Blood Diamond. It is a better performance and a lead role.

      I’m sad Mickey Rourke lost.

    164. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 10:42 pm 164

Markie27, I couldn’t agree more except I would add Wall-E. Milk, The Dark Knight, Wall-E, and Slumdog Millionaire are my favorite films of the year so I’m hoping against all hope that these four can make it to the Oscar 5. Meaning I’ll actually have FOUR out of five to root for!

Will it happen? It very well could. But right now I’ll just root for the wonderful Slumdog Millionaire.

    165. Elvis January 8th, 2009 at 10:47 pm 165

It’s a shame Kate wasn’t there to kiss the Academy’s ass. She was in New York today filming Letterman instead. Hopefully she gets noticed at the GGs too.

    166. The Natural January 8th, 2009 at 10:48 pm 166

“Slumdog Millionaire” is a great film, but this is too much. I was fine with “No Country” sweeping everything last year, but to me that was a true, timeless, year-defining *masterpiece*. “Slumdog” feels like flavor of the month, “Around the World in 80 Days” type winner, not one that will last.

Academy, please give this one to “Benjamin Button” or “Milk.”

    167. suarez January 8th, 2009 at 10:49 pm 167

Thanks Ryan Adams, I stand corrected. :)

    168. Meeza January 8th, 2009 at 10:51 pm 168

People in this forum are not giving “Slumdog Millionaire” the respect it deserves! Nobody has congratulated the film for winning 5 awards! It is a masterpiece! Hopefully, it can heal some wounds from the recent tragedy in India.

Also, if you did not get emotional with Heath’s win then you do not have a heartbeat!

I thought it was a very entertaining show! Some people are nitpicking here!

    169. Matt January 8th, 2009 at 10:51 pm 169

Does anyone think that its a possibility, barring the results from the Globes, that Benjamin Button could be snubbed for BP? Its precursor tally as it stands is fairly mediocre.

Also, I think Kate Winslet is closer to a Supporting Actress win than others may think. I can totally see Streep winning Actress and Winslet winning Supporting.

    170. Sasha Stone January 8th, 2009 at 10:52 pm 170

Don’t get too excited there, Meeza. These are only the Critics Choice/

    171. RB January 8th, 2009 at 10:52 pm 171

I’m starting to feel the same way about it too, Matt. Same with Frost/Nixon.

    172. Sasha Stone January 8th, 2009 at 10:54 pm 172

The Natural, there isn’t a film the majority can agree on EXCEPT Slumdog. That is how it will keep on winning. I only didn’t like the ending so much – loved the rest of it.

    173. Sasha Stone January 8th, 2009 at 10:55 pm 173

Bobby C. one ought to get too excited – this is one award show. There are many more to come. And most people don’t watch this one, not the demo that counts.

    174. Jake January 8th, 2009 at 10:55 pm 174

Choo Choo… Slumdog train makes another stop at the BFCA tonight.

    175. Stephen Holt January 8th, 2009 at 10:56 pm 175

Does this really tell us anything we didn’t know? Slumdog, we knew. Heath, we knew. Sean, we knew.

But the actresses races are all ovah de places!

    176. Michael Greenwaldt January 8th, 2009 at 10:57 pm 176

Congrats to Sean Penn and Anne Hathaway, but these just made me loathe Slumdog Millionaire even more (And I wasn’t a fan before watching the awards). If you watched this you may as well not watch any more award shows because they are sure to follow suit. Of course, it won’t stop me from watching them. I’m hoping the Oscars mix it up a bit, but I doubt it. We’re looking at a sweep for Slumdog, which will be really boring. I’d rather anything else win Best Picture at this point, even Benjamin Button. Slumdog is not Best Picture material. It’s not a timeless classic like one should be to win Best Picture. Like has been stated before, it’s just the flavor of the month. It should win MTV Movie Awards instead ;) .

    177. The Natural January 8th, 2009 at 10:58 pm 177

      I know Sasha.

It hurts that that movie couldn’t be “Button.” :(

    178. Roger Ebert January 8th, 2009 at 10:59 pm 178

Hmm I liked Slumdog, but it didn’t deserve it. Should of went to Milk. Langella should of won for actor instead of Penn.

    179. hunter January 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm 179

i think people are upset about the slumdog win because its not an american film with no american actors… slumdog is by far the best film of the year…. americans are always resistant to foreign films… yes i know its a british film, but the actors arent white and parts of it is in hindi… hopefully more people will go out and support this film with all the publicity its getting.

    180. Haifa January 8th, 2009 at 11:04 pm 180

Almost as “boring” as the predictable winners is the constant refrain of how overrated Slumdog is. Obviously, a majority of those who have seen it disagree. But alas, that’s the price it pays for being the frontrunner.

    181. J.Cochrane January 8th, 2009 at 11:04 pm 181

Glad that Streep and Hathaway tied. Judging on the performances alone, they were both very deserving – as is Kate Winslet in “Revolutionary Road”. It’s going to be a strong year for Best Actress – If any of the three take it, I will be pleased.

    182. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 11:05 pm 182

Sasha is right. While I believe Slumdog Millionaire is NOT just “the flavor of the month,” which btw I think is pretty offensive way of describing this great film, I also recognize that it’s winning partly because it probably has the least amount of detractors compared to all of the other movies.

    183. Joel January 8th, 2009 at 11:06 pm 183

Sean Penn will now get the oscar, and as much as her deserves it, I would like to see Mickey Rourke get at least one of the major awards before Academy Awards are announced.

    184. Ryan January 8th, 2009 at 11:07 pm 184

BTW Kate Winslet is currently on David Letterman on the East Coast. This is why she wasn’t there tonight. Darn.

    185. Matt C. January 8th, 2009 at 11:09 pm 185

Momentum is everything with the Oscars. Watch out Benjamin Button (instant box office hit) and Slumdog (many runaway critical wins)….you don’t want to peak too early.

Milk, The Wrestler, etc. still have much room to grow.

    186. Patrick G January 8th, 2009 at 11:13 pm 186

This is probably the only one of the big 4 (Oscar, Globe, SAG & BFCA) in which all the voters actually watched all the nominees. So I respect their choices individually and collectively. ALL great selections, except the Hathaway win…)

    187. Markie27 January 8th, 2009 at 11:14 pm 187

Although i haven’t yet seen the film, i think Benji can still sneak in the BP race… it is too much of an Oscar bait movie to get snubbed… but then again – look at what happened to Dreamgirls.

I watched F/N and still could not fathom the idea that it is one of the best pictures of the year! it was just okay… i cannot believe some people (i don’t know if it is from this site) compared it with Good Night and Good Luck!!!! OMFG! GNGL is a thousand times better than FroNix and would have been okay if it won best pic over Brokeback (the real best picture of the year) …..although Capote and Munich were also better choices that the actual winner! and F/N is not the Michael Clayton of the year – i mean – you can actually enjoy watching Michael Clayton and get blown way by Tilda’s performance.

I came to watch Slumdog the other day ready to hate and trash the film so that TDK would be the only film to stand in Milk’s way… unfortunately i loved the film. i am still rooting for Milk though… although i believe the OSCAR race is between The Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire.

    188. James January 8th, 2009 at 11:59 pm 188

Milk is very good film, I especially liked the way Van Sant employed the flowing camera techniques he used in Elephant for the film’s climatic scenes. Overall I wasn’t too enthusiastic though, probably because of biopic fatigue (Ray, Capote, W, La Vie en Rose, and more). Diego Luna was annoying in every one of his scenes including the last one where he was just supposed to be “hanging” around. The rest of the cast was terrific. I just saw The Duchess and Ralph Fiennes was very good but he was more animated and entertaining in In Bruges, he should be nominated for the latter.

HFPA just leaked Anne Hathaway as Globes best actress, but then came up with a lame excuse, you guys buyin’ it?

    189. Ryan Adams January 8th, 2009 at 11:59 pm 189

      test, 1, 2, 3
      sorry, brief site crash.

    190. dela January 9th, 2009 at 12:05 am 190

I thought those ballots are supposed to be secret until the very last moment. We’ll know for sure on Sunday or we may never know (ie, if Hathway wins).

    191. Pablo January 9th, 2009 at 12:12 am 191

Markie, i love you ! You’re so right about Frost. I mean, it SO overrated. I prefer Revolutionary Road, RGM and Wall-E over that.
I really hope it is this year’s Dreamgirls/Into the Wild.

And people: Benjamin Button is going down recently. Critics have not been THAT generous with it and it has to be done: It is far FAR behind Slumdog and TDK (maybe even Milk) in getting love from everyone. Still i think it will get at least 10 nods for Oscar, as well as TDK.

    192. JAB January 9th, 2009 at 12:16 am 192

I thought for sure BFCA would give Dark Knight the boost it needed, oh well. Slumdog’s my #2, I won’t complain.
The Actress races are out of control right now though! what if Kate wins two?! That would be phenomenal. It’ll never happen, but it would be really phenomenal.

    193. Mgo January 9th, 2009 at 1:00 am 193

Kate Winslet wasn’t nominated for Best Leading Actress, and I just dont understand why, but they gave to her the Best Supporting Actress prize is that meaning that she had to win the Leading, and that’s why the tie between Streep and Hatheway?
      :S

    194. Lee January 9th, 2009 at 1:04 am 194

AMPAS is a very different beast than critics’ groups. It is still very much the Geritol segment of the Academy that votes with vigor. A lot of people who are eligible to vote in the Oscars that are still working have little time to watch the contenders and therefore don’t vote or allow others to make their choices for them. They are busy working in the industry, not watching the films that are coming out.

One thing that has never changed, and probably never will, is that AMPAS voters do not like to be told who to vote for by critics. Guild awards do influence votes.

Sorry if this sounds negative, but it is the hard truth. As Sasha says so often, no one knows anything.

    195. Jorge January 9th, 2009 at 1:10 am 195

I was so happy that Slumdog Millionaire got so much recognition – no other film deserves it more that Dany Boyle’s masterpiece…maybe only The Dark Knight comes closest

I called Kate Winslet to win for supporting actress since I think she will be nominated at the Oscars for this performance in the supporting race and not nominated in the lead actress race – I think she will also win the Globes and SAG supporting, and then Oscar is next.

And I am somewhat mixed about the infamous “tie”. Though I am SOOOOOO HAPPY Hathaway won, I do not think that Meryl deserves to win for Doubt – a mediocre film that, at least for me, was very dissapointing. I felt as though half the critic members votes for Streep on name alone, while the other half actually voted for the performance that deserved to win – Anne’s.

As for the future of the actress racde, I believe it will become a race between Hathaway and Streep, becuause, again, Kate won’t be nominared for main for the mediocre “Revolutionary Road”, and if she is, then I do not think she can win with that film. Her work in The Reader is much more impressive, by mlestones…

    196. Frank J. Avella January 9th, 2009 at 1:29 am 196

I thank God for Ryan’s “vulgarity”…it’s frakking refreshing!
      Thrilled for Sean Penn!
We still only know one thing for certain…Heath…

    197. Jake January 9th, 2009 at 1:50 am 197

I’m fine with Slumdog Millionaire winning five awards, but if I hear the sound clip from “Jaiho” again I think I’ll cry. I haven’t heard the full song, but just that echoing of “Jaiho” is really annoying, since it was played after the film one each of its awards. Argh! And to top it off, both the director and the producer (?) said it after their respective acceptance speeches.

    198. Mark January 9th, 2009 at 1:52 am 198

Very happy for Kate Winslet’s Supp. Actress win for The Reader.
I saw that film last week and I am still thinking about it…….
Cannot wait for the Oscar noms on 01/22.
What are the odds Kate might be Oscar-nominated for Lead in The Reader?

    199. Christopher January 9th, 2009 at 1:53 am 199

Jorge-sooooo disagree with you. Meryl was incredible. The film was good, but the acting ensemble was probably one of the best this year.
Somehow it seems people percieve that the acadamy fawns on Meryl-well it’s been almost 30 years since she’s had a win.
She’s deserved to win several times but people always say the same thing, “it’s Meryl Streep, of COURSE she got nominated.
I am confused why being one of the most talented actresses ever to grace the cinema should be a reason you shouldn’t win??
I firmly believe she not only gave the best performance of the year-she had the most difficult task to do by taking on a role that had already been an award winner on stage by another actress.
I have faith that she’s going home with the little man this year-and deservedly so.

    200. tyler January 9th, 2009 at 2:04 am 200

Slumdog was a fine film, but its not even the best film of the year, and I haven’t even seen Milk, Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, The Reader, or Rev Road yet..

The film is predictable, and I couldn’t get into the love story. It was so melodramatic at times also.

    201. steve January 9th, 2009 at 2:10 am 201

I don’t know why people are still pushing Winslet to win for Rev. Road in the lead?? my gut is that, she will not even nominated for that film since it was a complete disaster!!, Hey people remember!!, she lacks this nomination in lead which is one of the most important Oscar predictors in acting ( the other being the Globe and the SAG, and i think that BFCA is even more accurate than the Globes in predicting), so her big chance is for supporting turn in the Reader to win her long awaited Oscar!.

I’m saying this again, no lead actress had won the Oscar without the BFCA nomination!!!!

    202. David January 9th, 2009 at 2:11 am 202

I am very curious, and anxious to hear other people s opinions that are different from my own. SO I have to admit that I am a very devoted Oscar enthusiast, avid cinephile (I see over 200 films a year), and have been following this passion for about 20 years now.

Given that background, I would like someone with insight and perspective to explain to me the Rachel Getting Married enthusiasm or the Anne Hathaway Oscar buzz.

The film itself was one of the most droning, derivative, predictable, and pretentious films I hav ever seen. Additionally Hathaway’s performance was only adequate at best. Candidly, while I think Anne Hathaway is talented, this performance seems so forced and fake and obvious.

I would truly welcome dissenting opinions here, especially if you can please explain to me (in literary reason) why this film or this actress are really works of distinction. Keep in mind, every year superlatives are like dandelions (wild and messy in their proliferation). So give me a new paradigm here if you feel differently than I. I assure you that I anxiously await a better take on this picture.

    203. Haifa January 9th, 2009 at 2:16 am 203

And to top it off, both the director and the producer (?) said it after their respective acceptance speeches.

Jai Ho means “victory” in Hindi. ;)

    204. Jake January 9th, 2009 at 2:22 am 204

      Haifa,

Still, though. It’s become a bit cliche.

    205. Zach January 9th, 2009 at 2:34 am 205

Waltz with Bashir – animated and foreign? Will it do what Persepolis couldn’t?

    206. pol medina January 9th, 2009 at 3:22 am 206

i’m still hoping that Kristin Scott Thomas gets nominated in the Oscars. I was just blown away by her performance in I LOVED YOU SO LONG.

    207. Michele Innocenti January 9th, 2009 at 4:17 am 207

oh no…slumdog again…I can’t accept the possibility that the worst film of the ones on the race will be able to take home BP and or BD…I mean…it’s not only about TDK…every single film is better than that..from milk to benjamin button to TDK and Frost/Nixon…
hopefully it will be the same as with little miss sunshine…
and please no…don’t give it the fucking oscar for the score!!!

    208. Ross January 9th, 2009 at 4:19 am 208

I adore Meryl Streep. She’s an actors’ actor and she doesn’t care about getting all the attention and I love this generosity about her. It shows some confidence in her own abilities. And she really breathes in a role. Please, first watch DOUBT and then comment on her performance. She’s amazing in it as well. I’m glad she didn’t follow the Cherry Jones route. It’s what a great actor does – give life to a character on his/her own. Meryl DID that BRILLIANTLY. She should have won at least three or four times since her Oscar in 1982. And now I think she will win her THIRD OSCAR! She REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DESERVES IT!

    209. Livvy January 9th, 2009 at 5:24 am 209

      WELL SAID ROSS!

This woman is the greatest living actress and deserves to win at the GG’s and Oscars..
Why oh why hasn’t she won since 1982?! My money’s on Streep for her third!

      Go Meryl!

    210. Ash January 9th, 2009 at 6:47 am 210

It seems to me that Kate Winslet is bound to win an oscar this year. Though I haven’t seen either of her performances, I think she deserves a Lead actress oscar for Rev. Road. I think that movie strikes a personal note for her… and it would be a nice way to win.. while co-staring with Leo and being directed by husband Sam.

Music Score is the award i’m looking forward to the most this year. Fingers crossed for A. R. Rahmann… It would be sensational for india if he wins. I am quite skeptical of his chances for the oscar though. It seems to me that Music Score winners tend to be almost entirely instrumental, but the music in this movie has many vocal additions. And a relatively large segment of the soundtrack is songs, and the theme music from the game show. I’m still hoping he wins though.

    211. Ani Di January 9th, 2009 at 7:24 am 211

Oh! Slumdog it’s so the flavor of the month! I’m just happy to hear that, it helps me to undersdant these awards, and when i say “these” i mean, ALL of them!

Jaiho is the best thing in the movie, and i say the music not the scene, oh, the little Jamal too! Great little actor!

    212. w.j. January 9th, 2009 at 7:27 am 212

Ross and Livvy. I’m with you too! Meryl was brilliant and completely deserves her third Oscar.

    213. Free January 9th, 2009 at 7:38 am 213

One awards show and its winners doesn’t make everything official. SLUMDOG has been a lock for a nomination since its word-of-mouth in the festival circuit. It has the same kind of buzz and hype NO COUNTRY did, meaning it will probably win Best Picture handily. BENJAMIN BUTTON and FROST/NIXON, just because they didn’t win anything at the BFCA, changes nothing. They’re both nomination locks, too. Next in line would be MILK. Just because the crowd and the critics loved it doesn’t mean TDK is in, but it does seem to be the fifth slot film. Besides, what would replace it at this point?

-REVOLUTIONARY ROAD definitely doesn’t have the buzz and enthusiasm it needs

      -Ditto for THE READER

-DOUBT is a decent film but not a BP type

-WALL-E and THE WRESTLER are the only two other films I can see possibly getting in, and they’re looong shots

    214. Giorgio January 9th, 2009 at 7:48 am 214

Slumdor doesn’t deserves four prize, and Milk two, very good, but deserves more and more is a great film, the best this year.

    215. Jonah January 9th, 2009 at 7:58 am 215

      Hey, The Natural,

Just because what are personal opinions for if not for disagreeing and conversing about them, I found No Country to be a good but not great film that fell apart in its third act. I couldn’t fathom the widespread support for it at the end of the year awards. This year, I think Slumdog is a wondrous achievement and one of my favorite films of the year (although my not my #1).

Of course, I make no judgment on your thoughts… I just want to remind you some people’s opinions differ.

Oh, and for the haters on Slumdog’s chances in score, only Paper Planes (D.F.A Remix) is not original. The rest of the songs and music are A.R. Rahman compositions (for example, O… Saya, which does have M.I.A. singing in it, was composed for the movie even if it sounds like a “pop radio hit”. Rahman’s score is very techno-flavored; Boyle told Rahman when discussing the score not to put “a single fucking cello in my movie.”

    216. HaroldsMaude January 9th, 2009 at 8:06 am 216

One of the highlights of last night’s broadcast was yes, the actress tie, but Viola Davis’ acceptance speech for Meryl Streep. Meryl did Viola real credit by winning and not being there for the continued exposure to this wonderful little known talent and gracious woman.

But through her speech she’d say, Meryl would do this, and Meryl would say that, and all the time I kept thinking, no she wouldn’t. Well, she would eventually. But she would be funny and mockingly express little surprise at her win (remember her win at the Globes for “Prada”)? Streep is such a queen in so many ways and I thoroughly enjoy seeing her presence on screen and off (though still by way of some media).

And though I wasn’t taken by the final scene in Doubt, her performance in that film is keeps me thinking about character and the real reasons for her actions. It was a study in acting and ‘choices.’ I still think she should have won for “Prada” and she was the one to have won for “The Hours”. A Streep-Penn win this year would be fabulous.

    217. Jo January 9th, 2009 at 8:23 am 217

David: While you wait for someone with insight and perspective to weigh in, I too am completely baffled by the praise this thing (RGM) has been getting. Trite, obvious, and absolutely flat-footed. Yet, explicably, it is at least being dismissed in award show categories and guild groups as far as script and supporting performances. And, I just think Hathaway is the designated critics’ darling this year for some reason.

    218. Paul Outlaw January 9th, 2009 at 9:16 am 218

Highlight of the evening: Kristin Scott Thomas (“auditioning” for the Academy Award nomination she so richly deserves) and Sean Penn (“At heart this is a beauty contest, so I had an advantage.”). Class all the way. Would love to see these two standing together backstage at the Kodak Theater holding Oscars.

    219. Ryan January 9th, 2009 at 9:31 am 219

“oh no…slumdog again…I can’t accept the possibility that the worst film of the ones on the race will be able to take home BP and or BD”

Michelle, according to who? You? I mean everyone’s opinion is valid of course, but gotta say you’re in the minority here, which again doesn’t make you WRONG, but a lot of people did like (even LOVE) the film and while I don’t claim that it’s the Second Coming, it deserves the respect and accolades that it HAS been getting.

I, for one, will still be happy if this doesn’t win Best Picture at the Oscars as long as my other favorites do namely Milk, The Dark Knight, and Wall-E.

    220. Anna January 9th, 2009 at 9:46 am 220

Watch the Slumdog team do press and tell me they aren’t going to win the Oscar. Danny Boyle hit the nail on the head when he said that Slumdog feels like an underdog movie and that is why people are cheering for it. It’s obviously not the underdog, but it’s all about perception…

    221. Larry January 9th, 2009 at 9:58 am 221

The BFCA further validate “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Milk,” “The Dark Knight” and “Wall-E” as clearly the best of 2008.

“Milk”’s key BFCA wins for best actor and best ensemble, adding to the fact that it has had nods from PGA, DGA, SAG, and WGA, proves that the glaring omissions of this best American home-based drama of the year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, only confirms my early charges of their myopathy and homophobia.

Sean Penn and Meryl Streep are America’s greatest living film actors–nobody else comes close. And Penn was beyond diamond-brilliant in MILK, he literally became the title character. While we should be very content and very honored for the triumph of Mickey Rourke in THE WRESTLER and Frank Langella in FROST/NIXON, those performances still look like performances, however fine.

Penn’s rendering is transformative. He has stepped out of himself and re-emerged as Harvey Milk. His is far and away the best film acting of 2008, and hopefully AMPAS will follow suit and confer upon him a much deserved second best actor Oscar.

As for the forthcoming GLOBES, they are already forever tarnished by the glaring omissions for MILK. Perhaps they too will confer upon Penn the best actor award. Then again, they are perhaps already lost in their own myopathy and homophobia.

AMPAS will probably never live down their selection of CRASH over BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN as the best picture of 2005. Likely the HFPA will be regretting their MILK omissions for many a moon.

    222. doublB January 9th, 2009 at 10:14 am 222

I would just also like to thank David for his eloquent comments about Rachel Getting Married – I couldn’t have said it better.

    223. Wael January 9th, 2009 at 11:02 am 223

It was pretty boring. I don’t think I can complain about the oscars after this snooze but the best moment was the Streep-Hathaway tie. As Anne Hathaway delivered her acceptance speech I could imagine being very excited about that happening at the Oscars, which would make it only the third time that ever happens in the lead actress category (Or is it only the second, with the third being in Best actor? I forget) It would also be reminiscent of the last time this happened 40 years ago when a young actress ties for the win with an Oscar Perennial in her third Oscar win. Not to mention the added former Costars factor. Eh…a guy can dream :-)

    224. Alfredo January 9th, 2009 at 11:07 am 224

I can’t believe that after a year people still thinks that No Country for Old Men falls apart in the third act. People just don’t understand that movie.

    225. MattyZ January 9th, 2009 at 11:22 am 225

For me, the best pics of 2008 remain The Dark Knight, Milk, and Slumdog Millionaire. But I have to give the edge to Slumdog.

I keep reading this vitriol towards this remarkable film and I can only guess it’s due to a prevailing cynicism. Slumdog is incredibly simple in its premise and in its framing device – and that is precisely the point – and precisely why it works. It is a fairy tale – pure and simple. But like all great fairy tales, there is lasting resonance because of the issues it attempts to highlight. I think great art does that – manages to attack relevant issues head on – but through a whimsical lens. And this film also dares to brush with the spiritual – which cynics just don’t like. In the end, however, this movie is indeed a classic because of its execution. The direction, the acting, the cinematography, the score and songs – the style…it all comes together in a way that eclipses – if barely – the other films.

The Dark Knight is a masterpiece – but the third act does falter a bit. It really does. We forgive it, because to that point it’s so perfect, but there are problems.

Milk is unbelievably moving, but I think in some ways it does fall a bit into the traps of a bio pic – which is that the artists must stay true to history, which does not always allow for that creative “punch”.

My hope is that one of these three takes home the prize. And my vote is for Penn and Streep. They remain in their own category of excellence and deliver their finest work this year. I hope the Academy does not punish them because to choose them might seem “predictable” or “old school”. They are simply, treaures, and should be so awarded.

    226. Michele Innocenti January 9th, 2009 at 12:35 pm 226

1 my name is Michele and not michelle, I’m a man!!! :-)
2 I DID like slumdog millionaire but if it’ll win it will be the same as when shakespeare in love, a good film, won over masterpieces like private ryan or thin red line…slumdog is not even close to be great cinema as milk b. button or TDK are…IMHO…
this from my european perspective…maybe they are really trying to wash the bush shit apart from USA and so, in the movies contest, they would love to award such a silly and predictable modern fairy tale, but from here…the vision is slightly different…

    227. Yvette January 9th, 2009 at 2:15 pm 227

I enjoyed the show. I think the other awards shows will go very differently. I just don’t understand Richard Gere, I was like what…??? huh???

    228. stevie g January 9th, 2009 at 7:26 pm 228

@ larry….arent you getting bored of hearing yourself talk about the homophobia at the globes? brokeback mountain won at the globes and ang lee won the best director oscar for brokeback…perhaps the voters were just more emotionally invested in crash ( i hated that movie, so i dont get it either) then they were with brokeback…or perhaps it was because there were a lot of respected and known bigtime actors in crash and they held a lot of sway with the biggest branch of voters, not to mention haggis was on a role with crash coming a year after he wrote million dollar baby. regardless of what the reasons were it is sickening to me that there are so many people on this site (and in general) that have opinions like “you didnt like milk? you must be homophobic” its just plain stupid…im very sure there are people who dont like milk based solely on the fact that there are men kissin in the film…however most of those people WILL NOT HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE, and i get offended that because i think that other than sean penn and josh brolin (and possibly franco) nothing in that film is worthy of oscar consideration (again my opinion) that, to you larry, and many others, makes me homophobic

very sorry about the rant, and the fact that i wrote all that using almost no punctuation

“I have just come from seeing Crazy Heart. I am always skeptical when it comes to award circles honoring veteran actors for a mediocre role, but in reality, it’s for their body of work. A sympathy vote. Before I saw Crazy Heart, Jeremy Renner clearly gave the best performance. I heard that Jeff Bridges’ character was a washed-up alcoholic country singer trying to clean his act up. Truly redundant and repulsive Oscar bait. I mean, that just reminds me of Robert Duvall winning for Tender Mercies! Alcoholics almost always guarantee an Oscar nomination, and perhaps even an Oscar! (Ray Milland in The Lost Weekend, Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou, Thomas Mitchell in Stagecoach, Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas). Now I’m not saying Jeff Bridges is a horrible actor. He’s a pretty good actor. I loved his earlier work, like The Last Picture Show and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Even in Starman, I found him hilarious (weird, right?). So, from word of mouth, I figured Jeff Bridges would not be all that great. I was wrong.

Bridges put himself into this character so much, I almost forgot it was Jeff Bridges! I know, that’s hard to swallow, even for me! But he was on top of his game! Obviously, the movie had certain problems, but the movie was Jeff Bridges. Some may say his performance is subtle. True. It is a bit subtle. But it was just the little things Bridges does with his body movement, the way he speaks, his reaction to others, his singing (wow!), how he interacts with the little boy, how I looked deep into those tired blue eyes and saw the soul of this wrecked person. Bridges creates a character that you can believe. I mean, it IS easy to believe someone like Bridges playing this character, physically and otherwise. Along with my amazement Bad Blake come to life, I also pondered on the side of Bridges’ acting career as a whole, and put both the lives of Bridges and Blake and compared the two. The feeling was just too overwhelming.

If Jeff Bridges wins the Oscar (and after seeing his performance, I am pretty sure he will), it will not be a sympathy vote. Jeff Bridges brings a complex character to life with that special king of magic persona he shoots off the screen. I am for Jeff Bridges winning the Oscar.”
