Michael Cieply and David Carr have been hard at work posting lots of news about Sundance, including this tidbit about Jim Carrey’s latest:
The Eccles theater – the biggest one at the festival – was pretty well mobbed Sunday night in anticipation of “I Love You Phillip Morris.” With Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as the romantic leads and the writers of “Bad Santa” (Glenn Ficarra and John Requa) calling the shots, it had a bit more luster than other Sundance selections, but that doesn’t mean this story of escape, love and the everlasting grift lives in the mainstream. The applause from the audience was lusty, but the Bagger is he is keen on hearing what a real New York Times critic has to say about it.
The post-screening Q&A was friendly, except for one righteous dork who said he was impressed by the movie, but wondered what the people involved were “going to do to support the LGBT community.” The directors and the stars looked at each other, wondering who was going to take the bullet and answer the question.
Mr. Carrey stepped tentatively to the mic: “What am I doing for the gay community? Um, loving and tolerating them, I guess.”
That appears to be about as close to a boycott as this festival ever got.
