All Quiet on the Oscar Blogger Front

Posted by Sasha Stone On January - 21 - 2009

Yeah, it’s Sundance and all but does anyone think it’s mighty strange that most of the self-proclaimed Oscar bloggers are being quiet right about now?  Perhaps they feel there is nothing worth talking about?  Movie City News, nothing.  Hollywood-Elsewhere, nothing.  In Contention, Film Experience, Gold Derby, Rope of Silicon, Indiewire and of course, Dave Karger at EW, are all on it.  Otherwise, drop a penny to the bottom, the well is empty.  Awards Daily, knee-deep in Dark Knight fever (don’t worry; it will all be over soon).

Here is your space to plug your site – tell us who you are and what you’ve got going.

Oh, let’s not talk about me, Sasha. Let’s talk about you. What did YOU think of the Dark Knight?

    3. touristique January 21st, 2009 at 11:12 am 3

Vanity Fair has their Little Gold Men Oscars blog—going strong every day.

    4. The Third Man January 21st, 2009 at 11:19 am 4

I have a blog. It has no Oscar stuff on it, but it will after the nominations go up. It’s mainly just a haphazard cavalcade extravaganza of reviews, comments, thoughts, fears, fetishes, and perspectives all pertaining to movies. Okay, so it’s not near as fascinating as that made it sound, but I’m trying. I need traffic.

    5. Nick Plowman January 21st, 2009 at 11:22 am 5

I’m still at odds in terms of my nomination predictions, not sure why. Perhaps its just last minute jitters as Nat Rogers called it.

    6. Jordan Cronk January 21st, 2009 at 11:26 am 6

Me and fellow Oscar-obsessive Luke Gorham have our final predix up at In Review Online. Take a look if you’re so inclined.

Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Awardsdaily, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of The Dark Knight fails, when we forsake our reviews and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of Dark Knight comes crashing down! BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY! THIS DAY WE FIGHT! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you: stand, Men of the Christopher Nolan!!! YOU WILL GET THE BEST PICTURE AND THE BEST DIRECTOR NOD! YOU DESERVE IT!

I wonder if Mike Leigh could squeeze a director nod for Happy-Go-Lucky (he did it years ago with Vera Drake). I think there might be a few surprises.

    19. Aaron Leggo January 21st, 2009 at 12:13 pm 19

I have a website that is basically like a blog. It started as a project to get me wrapping my head around building a site with CSS and HTML and turned into a place where I basically share my movie reviews. Film criticism is my great passion and so I started writing reviews and posting them on my site. I am now up to 45, which is pretty awesome. It started with Iron Man and went from there. The first couple were a little rough, but then it really started to come together.

So, the Movie Reviews page is really the main thing that I update. My Movie News page is blank and I haven’t written anything about television for a long time.

But I do have my Oscar predictions up on my site, along with my Top Ten lists for 2008. The links to those are on my home page or you can find them at these URLs:

      http://slothsandmovies.com/oscar-predictions-2008.html
      http://slothsandmovies.com/best-worst-portal-2008.html

So that’s about it. I don’t have many regular readers yet, so anyone who wants to give my site a chance, then I’d love to have you. I don’t have a guestbook set up right now, since I tried it once and the thing was overrun with spam very quickly. But if anyone reads anything on my site and wants to respond (happily or angrily), just send me an email and I’ll get back to you.

      Thanks for this opportunity, Sasha!

    20. Alan of Montreal January 21st, 2009 at 12:23 pm 20

I think everyone’s just recovering from the inauguration.

    21. Afrika January 21st, 2009 at 12:23 pm 21

…and Sasha, no coverage on the RAZZIES?

The previous nomination of Sharon Stone’s “lopsided boobs” in Basic Instinct 2 has to be the funniest moment in cinematic history, without a doubt.

      @ atlanta…

You have Cate Blanchett as a possible best actress nominee for the movie “The Mysterious case of B. B” LOL. I think I like “curious case” better. lol

    24. Ryan Adams January 21st, 2009 at 12:41 pm 24

Looking forward to seeing Cate and Brad in their next project: The Curious Cask of Amontillado

    25. Flapp January 21st, 2009 at 12:45 pm 25

      Sure, Blanchet deserves this nom.

    26. Matt Mazur January 21st, 2009 at 12:52 pm 26

I guess I’m not really an “Oscar blogger” per se, but I do have a column going up (I think tomorrow) on why I think Happy-Go-Lucky is the film of the year, which will be followed by an exclusive interview with Mr. Mike Leigh. I spent some time with Leigh the day he was to pick up his NYFCC award, which was as amazing as it sounds.

During the interview “Mr. Rudin” called up to see him and was told he would have to wait.

Sure enough, there he was in the lobby when I got down there.

      LOL.

That will probably be the only time in my life that “Mr. Rudin” waits for me.

Anyways, we chatted about lots of things: what an Oscar would mean to him, women in cinema (of course!), and why Angelina Jolie in Changeling is problematic.

I guess I am sort of verging recklessly into “Oscar blogger” territory….

Woo a chance for a shameless plug!

I read this site religiously although I rarely comment for some reason, but I do pretty much rely on you guys and I’m rarely disappointed by your coverage.

I’m currently working on a film studies undergrad degree at the University of South Carolina, and work at the student-run newspaper there, The Daily Gamecock, as film critic. My blog, which you’ll get to if you click my name, features links to my articles in that newspaper (mostly reviews) in addition to some Oscar musings, personal insights into some films, just mostly whatever I feel I have time for during my busy schedule.

    37. Ziyad Abul Hawa January 21st, 2009 at 1:20 pm 37

Im bored, I’ve checked all the blogs… This is what happens when you get sick for a week and you don’t go to work. Keep the blogs coming!

I went with some ’shockers’ because things seem a bit too stale to be right.

I also have posted the Golden Razzie Nominations for this year’s worst, which came out today…just for shits and giggles.

Well, I don’t have Oscar stuff SPECIFICALLY.

But my site (CINEMATIC PASSIONS) is mainly devoted to film – as in reviews – along with music, television, fashion…

Almost anything that hits the heights of the pop culture zeitgeist.

Click on my name to take the grand tour.

Oh…and the lovely and talented RYAN ADAMS has been a visitor there on occasion.

Even if it hasn’t been lately…

    51. SaltireFlower January 21st, 2009 at 4:05 pm 51

Okay, I’ll pimp my site as well. It’s fairly new and it’s really more of a wiki than a blog:

    52. Aaron Leggo January 21st, 2009 at 4:28 pm 52

Hey tyler, I love the idea of a movie debate site. I must remember to join a debate when they start up. Very cool idea.

    53. Erik Beck January 21st, 2009 at 4:29 pm 53

I don’t do predictions, per se, but I do watch all of the films (I just reached 90% of all 7320 feature film Academy Award nominations).

I do write a lot about film at:

      http://nighthawknews.wordpress.com/category/erik/film/

and I will be doing a post each day until the awards, focusing in on a category each day at:

Why do I have a nagging suspicion about TDK getting shut out of Best Picture? I think I’m just getting punchy. I hope so.

      http://reflectionsinagoldeneye.blogspot.com/

    57. Tom January 21st, 2009 at 9:02 pm 57

I can’t get behind THE DARK KNIGHT for Best Picture. Or maybe I’m biased because I didn’t really like it. Anyway, I’ve been trying to blog a bit about the Oscars on my site. I posted predictions, and I do a contest every year with mostly my friends. But you all should enter. It will be up tomorrow morning.

      http://filmfemmewrites.blogspot.com/

    59. Matt Mazur January 22nd, 2009 at 7:03 am 59

I wrote a much more eloquent comment yesterday that got marked as spam and apparently lost, but check out my writing via my url/name thing — my next venture is a column about why I think Happy-Go-Lucky is the film of the year and an exclusive interview with Mr. Mike Leigh, who I spoke with the day he was going to collect his Best Director award from the NYFCC. My column is technically about gender and film, but lately I have been speaking with quite a few directors…
