Most Overdue

Posted by Sasha Stone On March - 4 - 2009

Nathaniel Rogers makes up his list of those who are most overdue for an Oscar win now that Kate Winslet can be crossed off the list.  And wouldn’t you know it would end up with Michelle Pfeiffer at number 1?

<— Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Bridges in 2007

01 La Pfeiffer 3 nominations
The evidence: Scarface, Married to the Mob, Dangerous Liaisons, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Russia House, Frankie & Johnny, Batman Returns, Love Field, The Age of Innocence, What Lies Beneath and White Oleander. I rest my case.

I don’t know, I need to see something a little more risky from Ms. Pfeiffer, she who turned down The Silence of the Lambs for being too violent.  It can’t all be roses and sunshine, lady, if you want the gold.  You know it’s love when Nat cites What Lies Beneath as one of the arguments FOR Ms. Pfeiffer’s award.  But he’s right – since it doesn’t really take much to win an Oscar these days (Penelope Cruz) and it IS a popularity contest, Pfeiffer should have won long ago and she is very good in many of her roles — incredibly versatile. Ian McKellen would be my number one choice – it’s an embarrassment in all possible ways that he has yet to win one, followed by Julianne Moore

She refused The Silence of the Lambs because it was too violent after having done Scarface?

    2. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 9:39 am 2

As much as I like Pfeiffer, I wouldn’t place her on a list like this — pretty much for the reasons you mention, Sasha. However, I don’t have any problem with Cruz’s win. If you’d said, “since it doesn’t really take much to win an Oscar these days (George Clooney),” we’d be more in agreement, but that’s just different strokes for different folks and no big deal.

Even though Peter O’Toole has reached the final phase of his career, I still think he deserves the #1 (or at least #2) spot here. And I certainly agree that Ian McKellen, Julianne Moore, Johnny Depp, and Jeff Bridges should be on a list like this.

I’m an advocate of Jim Carrey. Whether or not one appreciates the over-the-topness of his comedic work, I regard him as pretty much a genius.

And I’d throw in Bill Murray, Albert Finney, and Patricia Clarkson, even if it’s for an Oscar in a supporting category.

      Harvey Keitel!

    4. RJGinCA March 4th, 2009 at 9:44 am 4

      Glenn Close

    5. cole March 4th, 2009 at 9:47 am 5

      no dicaprio? shame.

    6. richard crawford March 4th, 2009 at 9:56 am 6

she shoulda had the oscar for Dangerous Laiasions…..

      We all love her completely.

However, I hear her new movie “Cherie” ain’t v. good.

How many times have each of us seen “Baker Boys”?

    7. Paulo March 4th, 2009 at 10:05 am 7

Nathaniel is biased regarding Pffeifer. Moore and Linney are better actresses then Pfeiffer and they deserve to win before her.

    8. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 10:08 am 8

“But he’s right – since it doesn’t really take much to win an Oscar these days (Penelope Cruz)”

      :)

when I use to say Pe-NO-TALENT CRUZ, everyone will yell at me and my comments were even marked as spam. Well…

      :)

…and oh Meryl Streep is overdue!!

    9. billy singerle March 4th, 2009 at 10:08 am 9

      hello, Peter O’Toole

    10. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 10:09 am 10

      Angela FUCKING Bassett….

give that woman a role and give her a FUCKING Oscar. JEEZ!!

    11. richard crawford March 4th, 2009 at 10:10 am 11

Silence of the lambs is one of the most wrong-headed movies ever made. That Jonathan Demme turned in this direction still hurts me, & i think it still hurts him. the GREAT Jonathan Demme who made Handle with Care, & married to the mob, something wild, melvin & howard, the geat STOP MAKING SENSE.. Rachel Getting Married is not a return to form. Silence of the Lambs is well made dangerous shit. I think it hurt his career…he lost his way.

    12. richard crawford March 4th, 2009 at 10:15 am 12

      J. Moore is wonderul. Linney is good at playing a bitch.
      Yes to Peter O’T.

    13. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 10:18 am 13

      Let’s add:

      Laura Linney
      Gena Rowlands
      Catherine Deneuve

      and

      Emily Watson
      Don Cheadle

And Afrika, although I can acknowledge Penelope’s star power, her acting didn’t do much for me until I saw her in last year’s VCB.

    14. Chance March 4th, 2009 at 10:35 am 14

Reading that list I can’ believe Sigourney is pushing 60! Love her and Jamie Lee…anteeway (as Madea would say), I cannot comment on Michelle because she is fascinating and I love her too much to be unbiased (I’ll add that her performance in I Am Sam to me is the pot of gold all actors strive to reach – see, now half of you no longer are taking me seriously). However, Laura Linney is a yes! even if I think she’s the reason my poor Amy Adams was passed up for Enchanted…still makes me sad. Angela kinda has fallen into a rut…everything she does is expected and in horrible movies, too…someone hook her up!!!!

It’s the crazy combinations that create magic. Imagine Jennifer Hudson directed by Christopher Nolan, or Scorcese working with anybody he hasn’t already…makes me shiver.

    15. Dorothy Porker March 4th, 2009 at 10:56 am 15

I respectfully disagree about Cruz. She was fantastic in “VCB” (not to mention “Volver”).

I’d love to see Emily Watson, Johnny Depp and especially Leonardo DiCaprio win an Oscar soon. Still, one actor trumps them all in my book: Max Von Sydow (is there really anyone more due than he is?).

    16. Ryan B March 4th, 2009 at 11:01 am 16

My answer’s right up there in the picture with Pfeiffer: Jeff Bridges.

    17. Christopher King March 4th, 2009 at 11:02 am 17

I would really, really have to put Glenn Close on the Top of this list.
Garp, The Natural, The Big Chill, Dangerous Liasons, Fatal Attraction, House of Spirits, Hamlet, enough said?
Next I would put Angela F*****G Basset (Thanks Afrika, it suits her, she’s so awesome!) and Joan Allen.
      JOAN ALLEN!! Loves her too.

    18. richard crawford March 4th, 2009 at 11:06 am 18

Jeff is great, so great in Baker Boys. It’s his most soulful performance.
I watched him in FAT CITY again….on TCM and he has been fine in so many movies over the years.

    20. TTitan March 4th, 2009 at 11:36 am 20

      Brad Pitt.

He’s taking risks with the roles he’s choosing to play of late that are reminicent of Fight Club, 12 Monkeys and Snatch. If he doesn’t win as actor, he will certainly win as a producer because of the films he is producing.

    21. dela March 4th, 2009 at 11:38 am 21

Samantha Morton should be on the list.
My top choice would be Meryl Streep.

    22. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 11:38 am 22

Viggo! How could I have forgotten Viggo!

And yes, Dorothy, Von Sydow. I think the Academy regards him as a sort of “ex officio” or “emeritus” kind of guy. Plus, he’s not well known in the USA and therefore, to Academy members (unfortunately).

    23. wesley March 4th, 2009 at 11:45 am 23

      hi everyone. first post.

ok, so i know you can’t add these to the list because there are too many other actors who have a much larger body of work, but two that i would add because of recent performances…

ryan gosling. lars and the real girl. watched it recently and i feel like he could have put on a master class in acting with his performance.

james mcavoy. atonement. i have watched atonement a couple of times over the last year and is it just me, or was james mcavoy not the best thing about that movie? i feel like it was a brilliant turn and a shame he was passed over for at least a nomination. i won’t go into details about how i think atonement was vastly underrated as well; i think it is one of the best literary adaptations i have ever seen.

      just my thoughts.

    24. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 11:48 am 24

Gosling and McAvoy certainly are ones to watch. My guess is they’ll figure prominently in the future.

And dela, I agree about Streep. She should be at the top of any list like this. And cheers for Samantha Morton, too.

    25. Sally in Chicago March 4th, 2009 at 11:52 am 25

Dicaprio would be my first choice — but he’s another “pretty boy” who never ages; like Cruise and Depp. It’s going to be hard for Depp because he looks the same as he did 20 years ago. He’s got to get character in his face.

McAvoy is worth watching. And Viggo is way overdue. What happened to “good”? Anybody know?

    26. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 12:00 pm 26

I may be inviting criticism by saying this, but I’m guessing a lot of people think Tom Cruise should be on this list. While I’m not a big fan of his acting, he has clocked in with some good performances. And given the Academy’s penchant for awarding stars and those with strong personalities, I’m just sayin’ — Cruise is (arguably) a viable candidate for consideration.

    27. Antoinette March 4th, 2009 at 12:02 pm 27

      I like Ivan’s list.

Christian Bale is at the top of mine. I’ll also go with Toni Collette although maybe she isn’t famous enough yet. Jeffrey Wright is the same. Leo should have won for The Departed but that’s his or his people’s fault. I’m going to say Samuel L. Jackson realizing that I’ve just named the entire cast of Shaft. LOL. Julianne Moore doesn’t have one right? I’ll pick her. But not Michelle Pfeiffer. She’s never really stretched at all that I can remember. There are loads of people.

I didn’t even realize Max Von Sydow didn’t have one. That’s just silly.

p.s. I did think of putting Tom Cruise. But he’s not exactly overdue. However he did get robbed for Magnolia.

    28. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 12:06 pm 28

      Ahhhh — Toni Collette — that’s a good one.

    29. Alan of Montreal March 4th, 2009 at 12:07 pm 29

Donald Sutherland–if even just for one nomination. A NOMINATION FOR CHRISSAKE!

Also, Lauren Bacall deserves something, a lifetime achievement award at the very least. Ruby Dee, too, and Catherine Deneuve.

Agree with pretty much all the other posts, especially for Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen, and Laura Linney. I’d probably add Brenda Blethyn, Gong Li and Joan Chen to the list, as well. I’m wondering, though, if actors who don’t even care about awards such as Albert Finney should be part of the list? If they don’t want it, should they be given it?

    30. dela March 4th, 2009 at 12:09 pm 30

Depp and Dicaprio never really set out to be movie stars. They have always made great choices.
Streep-Dicaprio chemistry is Marvin’s room is so great and real. Both deserved nominations.

    31. Scott March 4th, 2009 at 12:21 pm 31

I still wanna see a retroactive Oscar for Bjork’s performance in Dancer in the Dark.

And Toni Collette needs one too.

    32. SeattleMoviegoer March 4th, 2009 at 12:38 pm 32

      the two great Brit masters…
      Peter O’Toole and Albert Finney.
      it’s a joke that they haven’t won
by now. Cliff Robertson is a
fine actor, but an Oscar for CHARLY over
      O’Toole’s LION IN WINTER?
      sheesh…

    33. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 12:40 pm 33

Toni Collette was the Viola Davis of The Hours IMO. She steals the movie in that one scene.

    34. Alison Flynn March 4th, 2009 at 12:42 pm 34

This is a good list, all deserving, but I don’t know how Peter O’Toole isn’t #1 here. Yes, he’s at the end of his career, but as Pierre points out he’s more overdue than anyone. Oh well, at least they’ve honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Oscar.

EDIT: Just saw SeattleMoviegoer’s comment about O’Toole AND Finney. Yes, it’s ridiculous that Finney hasn’t won yet as well!

    35. Alec March 4th, 2009 at 12:51 pm 35

Since John Cazale is dead(if any one deserved an Oscar, this guy does. 5 great performances in 5 movies nominated for best picture), I would go with Gary Oldman. He should have more nominatios than he does and he is great in every movie he is in.

    36. Daren March 4th, 2009 at 12:53 pm 36

PETER O’TOOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How has he lost 8 times? EIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! In my mind he should have a few Oscars but no, he has none.

    37. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 1:03 pm 37

This list should keep the Academy busy for decades to come. They might as well pull their supply of blank statuettes out of the cupboard and call the engraver.

    38. Alison Flynn March 4th, 2009 at 1:04 pm 38

@Alec: Spot on about Gary Oldman. I don’t know how I could forget him. A true chameleon actor (sometimes it takes me a couple of minutes to even recognize him) and terrific in every movie he’s in.

    39. Alex March 4th, 2009 at 1:07 pm 39

      Angela Bassett
      Meryl Streep

      Donald Sutherland
      Johnny Depp

I love Kate Winslet, but her performance in The Reader was nothing special. Really, it wasn’t even close to one of her best performances. And it was definitely lead. She should have won for Eternal Sunshine–truly one of the best performances of the decade.

    40. wesley March 4th, 2009 at 1:08 pm 40

scott, couldn’t agree more about bjork. one of the most devastating performances i have EVER seen. i was a mess.

    41. lenny March 4th, 2009 at 1:15 pm 41

i know it seems unfair, but meryl streep is actually the most overdue..based on talent and the fact that she has just lost for the 11th time in a row…how can that be??? no oscar since 1982…27 yrs…and actresses like jodie foster, hilary swank, and sally field have each won 2 best actress oscars since then..

Streep must win that elusive 3rd oscar soon..i dont care about any other actor other than peter o’toole finally winning after going 0-8…

    42. richard crawford March 4th, 2009 at 1:27 pm 42

      samantha morton is wonderous.

yes, yes dear meryle streep….maybe just maybe she’ll be funny as julia child. she was poop in doubt. Viola Davis was the only good thing in & about the movie.

    43. miguel gallego March 4th, 2009 at 1:28 pm 43

      -Leo DiCaprio
      -Ed Harris
      -Johnny Depp
      -EDWARD NORTON

    44. Give Meryl Oscar #3 March 4th, 2009 at 1:30 pm 44

Hey can someone explain to me why so many Oscar watchers hate Hillary Swank?

    45. Ryan B March 4th, 2009 at 1:31 pm 45

GiveMeryl, I’ve often wondered the same thing. I think she’s great.

    46. Give Meryl Oscar #3 March 4th, 2009 at 1:32 pm 46

As for the question, I think so many people are overdue it’s silly. Also, Morgan Freeman is probably going to win for Nelson Mandela the rugby coach or whatever this year…but I can always hope for Leonardo/Matt Damon/Pfiefer/Streep (supporting for Julie/Julia).

    47. bdgrfan March 4th, 2009 at 2:10 pm 47

What about Catherine Keener? She has been around for a long time and has built a small resume of her own that is pretty impressive.

      Into the Wild
      Capote
      Being John Malkovich

She also just recieved much critical praise and recognition for her work in last years “An America Crime”

Beyond what I wrote above, she has been a working actress for a very long time and has done dozens of movies, with very little recognition.

While she is not a typical “star” and keeps a very low profile, I wish she would get more recognition and somebody would offer her that one role which would get her a win.

    48. Alison Flynn March 4th, 2009 at 2:24 pm 48

@bdgrfan: Yes, Catherine Keener along with Steve Buscemi are terrific actors who work all the time and have extensive resumes, both in leading and small roles. Two of my favorite working actors.

    49. Tufas Bardem March 4th, 2009 at 2:34 pm 49

      Julianne Moore
      Glenn Close
      Sigourney Weaver
      Pedro Almodovar
      David Fincher
      Gus Van Sant
      Tarantino
      DiCaprio
      Depp
      Ed Norton
      Ralph Fiennes
James McAvoy needs at least a nom, huge snub for Atonement, he was Perfect

      T.

    50. SaltireFlower March 4th, 2009 at 3:02 pm 50

Jeffrey Wright, Gary Oldman, and James McAvoy should at least have been nominated by now. It’s a disgrace.

And Johnny Depp should have been nominated for Ed Wood, while Ed Norton should have won for American History X. And the fact that Ralph Fiennes has never won is unbelievable.

    51. vcb March 4th, 2009 at 3:03 pm 51

diane lane – should have been nominated for “a walk on the moon” and should have won for “unfaithful”

    52. Mik March 4th, 2009 at 3:10 pm 52

      Christian Bale.

      Viggo Mortensen.

    53. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 3:17 pm 53

      mik

      christian bale is overdue? lmao!!

    54. Drood March 4th, 2009 at 3:18 pm 54

I believe Peter O’Toole (8 nominations) and Glenn Close (5 nominations) qualify as the most overdue actor and actress, respectively. Meryl Streep has two but is certainly due for another…

    55. I Love AMPAS March 4th, 2009 at 3:23 pm 55

“since it doesn’t really take much to win an Oscar these days (Penelope Cruz)”

You are not being fair…Cruz was fantastic in VCB and she has other marvelous performances…Volver and Don’t Move are good examples

The problem is that you never liked her…tough…now she’s an Oscar winner :-)

    56. Mik March 4th, 2009 at 3:28 pm 56

      Afrika,

Having put in one of the most remarkable child-acting performances of all time in Empire of the Sun. A geniously dark left-field comedic tour-de-force in American Psycho. An incredibly committed nuanced performance in The Machinist. An exceptional conflicted role in The Prestige. And a hauntingly real performance in Rescue Dawn, not to mention completely solid work throughout his career and most certainly recently with Batman, I’m Not There, 3:10 To Yuma and The New World. Yet never once being as much as nominated…then yes…I’d say that he is certainly overdue awards recognition.

    57. Paul Outlaw March 4th, 2009 at 3:30 pm 57

Of previous nominees: Streep, Bonham Carter, Scott Thomas, Rowlands and Mortensen.

Of the never nominated: Bale, Oldman and Sutherland.

    58. MERYL STREEEEEEEEEEP March 4th, 2009 at 3:49 pm 58

If Michelle Pfieffer wins for Cheri, then there is no way of understanding of a quality acting in the minds of Academy members. Most deserving one should take the award performance wise. And That’s to be Meryl Streep, because she is great even in a shit like Rendition. So why the wait??? Do they think she will build up mountains so that finally they give her another?

    59. sakul March 4th, 2009 at 3:52 pm 59

JULIANNE MOORE is the most overdue. It’s a crime she hasn’t won one yet and Hilary Swank even owns TWO Oscars!!!! Glenn Close: Zero, Julianne Moore: Zero, – and Hilary Swank: 2?!?! It’s unbelievable for me. It’s unbelievable that Jennifer Hudson can call herself “Academy Award Winner” but Moore and Close can’t.
Moore should have won at least for “Far From Heaven” and “Boogie Nights” and Close should have won at least for “Dangerous Liasons” and “Fatal Attractions”.
And Dicaprio should be on this list. He should have won for “The Departed” or “The Aviator”.
And Jude Law is so overdue, too. And John Malkovich!
(On the other hand, it’s good to know that, from the last years, people like Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet, Philip Seymor Hoffman, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Helen Mirren can finally be called Academy Award winners.)

    60. gOirdalla March 4th, 2009 at 3:52 pm 60

And of course Sasha Stone jumps at this, well I think we will be seeing lots and lots of Cheri ads in this site for Oscars 2010 FYCs. I hope Meryl Streep wins and your face melts.

    61. Fatima March 4th, 2009 at 4:03 pm 61

I don’t see why the P.Cruz slam was needed.

I vote Angela Basset. If there were more good roles for women of color, she’d have had one by now. Sadly she ends up in Tyler Perry now. the Early 90s were so much better for black actors.

    62. WeinsteinHater March 4th, 2009 at 4:07 pm 62

well if they’re basin this subject on pure talent and skills as an artist and not because they’ve been previous nominees

      then here are my choices…….

      for female actresses

sigourney weaver and glenn close would be #1

      joan allen, julianne moore #2

jennifer jason leigh #3 – did she even at least get nominated?

      alfre woodard

      angela bassett

winona ryder – she’s so much better than gwyneth

pls forget about annette bening – she’s an average actress

i would add the ff skilled actresses instead: judy davis, barbara hershey, melissa leo

      male actors:

      LAURENCE FISHBURNE #1

sam neill, liam neeson, ray liotta, peter saarsgard – they don’t seem overdue cuz they have not been nominated at least once or more than once but they all deserve oscars

    63. Casey March 4th, 2009 at 4:13 pm 63

      JULIANNE MOORE – OSCAR NOW!

    64. I Love AMPAS March 4th, 2009 at 4:22 pm 64

La Pfeiffer has the same problem as Nicole kidman or Joan Allen…too much botox to win an Oscar..You can’t cast her on a movie like Cherie

Julianne Moore, Glen Close and La Weaver are the three 4 me…

    65. JR March 4th, 2009 at 4:29 pm 65

GLENN CLOSE – Fatal Attraction or Dangerous Liaisons

JULIANNE MOORE – Far From Heaven or Boogie Nights (I find it disgusting that Kim Basinger won for L.A Confidential)

PETER O’TOOLE – Lawrence of Arabia or The Lion in Winter

MAX VON SYDOW – Only nominated once, but he should have mutiple nominations for his fantastic performances in The Exorcist, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, and all those Bergman films.

      ALBERT FINNEY – Erin Brokovich

These individuals should all have an Oscar.

Meryl Streep? As much as I love her, she has 2 Oscars. For these individuals above, it was hard for them to even get one. Let’s leave Meryl out of a post like this.

    66. limeymcfrog March 4th, 2009 at 5:02 pm 66

Pfeiffer is a good actress, but nothing in me demands that she win an oscar. What Pfeiffer performance was so deserving that posterity demands rectification?

Ed Harris, Ian McKellan and Ralph Fiennes should be atop the actor list. Johnny Depp is in the second tier with Paul Giamatti and several others.

Streep and Benning are in a class by themselves on the overdue scale. Julianne and Joan are embarassing themselves with their recent film roles. Whoever said Laura Linney was right on the damn money!

    67. Scott March 4th, 2009 at 5:07 pm 67

      Oh yes…

      Julianne Moore
      Annette Bening

    68. Patrick March 4th, 2009 at 5:13 pm 68

      Liv Ullman

      Glenn Close

      Mia Farrow

      Edward Norton

      Max Von Sydow

      Ralph Fiennes.

    69. Antoinette March 4th, 2009 at 5:26 pm 69

I forgot all about Gary Oldman. He should definitely have one. Has he been nominated?

    70. Alison Flynn March 4th, 2009 at 5:44 pm 70

Antoinette, Oldman has never been nominated.

    71. HaroldsMaude March 4th, 2009 at 5:55 pm 71

I pretty much like Nathaniel’s list. But I’d drop Pfieffer from the #1 slot/from the list, and add Laura Linney to the mix (3 nominations). In the runner up category I’d put in Patricia Clarkson (1 nomination). And on the list of those long overdue for any nomination, let’s put Jeff Daniels at #1 (he should NOT have been passed over for Squid and the Whale).

    72. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 6:58 pm 72

      Mik

I think you are putting too much thought into Bale’s performances

“An incredibly committed nuanced performance in The Machinist. An exceptional conflicted role in The Prestige.” – mik

      The prestige? common now!

    73. Sasha Stone March 4th, 2009 at 7:11 pm 73

And of course Sasha Stone jumps at this, well I think we will be seeing lots and lots of Cheri ads in this site for Oscars 2010 FYCs. I hope Meryl Streep wins and your face melts.

I don’t normally say this to readers but you are an idiot. This is so dumb in so many ways. Cheri ads? One can only hope. Or did you expect me to do this for free so that I could create a place for you to ejaculate your idiotic comments on my dime?

    74. Joan Walsh March 4th, 2009 at 7:19 pm 74

Jeff bridges should have won the oscar for “The Contender” and “Lebowski”

    75. Rob Y March 4th, 2009 at 7:24 pm 75

      How about KEVIN O’CONNELL?

    76. JR March 4th, 2009 at 7:40 pm 76

Debra Winger will also be on my list.

    77. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 7:44 pm 77

    78. Xavier March 4th, 2009 at 8:27 pm 78

I don´t think that comment about Penelope Cruz was necessary…. she was best in show in VCB, and for once, it´s refreshing to see the Academy award a comedic performance… She´s a great actress (Volver, Don´t Move, La niña de tus ojos), and in my opinion if anyone should had gotten the award instead of her (not that I wanted it to happen) it should had been Amy Adams, and not the flashy Viola Davis….

I don´t know, the Oscars are behind us now, and it´s too early to start with the “who didn´t deserve to win”…. many of us and internet bloggers thought it was a deserved Oscar….you may not agree, I understand it, everyone has its own tastes, but to present it that way…..dunno, not very nice IMO….

And regarding the overdues, Leonardo Dicaprio, Juliane Moore and Ian McKellen would be up there for me….Would not mind seeing Michelle up there tought!

      Regards!

    79. Daniel March 4th, 2009 at 9:24 pm 79

No matter what, Meryl’s next nomination will be her win. I don’t think the academy would ever dream of letting her lose again, even if another performance is better (in which case it would barely be better anyway since Meryl is just that good).

Depp is certainly way overdue as well and so is Ralph Fiennes (the most hilarious part of In Bruges). Laura Linney should be on the list too, no doubt about it.

John Cusack needs a nomination too and, I think, so does Jim Carrey. Say what you will about the latter’s over-the-top comedic work (which I’m not so fond of myself) but when the man picks a more dramatic role he can be fantastic (ie Eternal Sunshine (deserved a nomination hands down) and The Truman Show). Does anyone think I Love You Phillip Morris or even Ripley’s Believe It or Not! could be his first nomination?

    80. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 9:55 pm 80

      B E Y O N C E

deserves a nomination. She was robbed in Cadillac records. She is way overdue

Beyonce doesn’t deserve a Grammy let alone an Oscar.

    82. Pierre de Plume March 4th, 2009 at 11:15 pm 82

      Catherine Keener — thank you.

Even Debbie Reynolds has an Oscarworthy performance in her — all she needs is the right role in a viable project.

    83. Afrika March 4th, 2009 at 11:51 pm 83

      chrisw

Beyonce doesn’t deserve a grammy? you are kidding me? you can’t hate her all you want but to deny her singing talent is utterly ridiculous…and a low blow

…watch this video and stand corrected!! ;)

      P.S
and I was joking about Beyone being overdue for an Oscar, in case you didn’t notice. I thought that was pretty obvious.

    84. Robocop March 5th, 2009 at 12:02 am 84

I agree with Sasha on P Cruz.

      Most overdue for me:
      Streep
      Moore
      Weaver
      McKellan
      Depp
      Di Caprio

    85. SeattleMoviegoer March 5th, 2009 at 12:21 am 85

      pierre:
debbie reynolds DID have an Oscarworthy
      performance. MOTHER with Albert Brooks.
but the Academy was looking somewhere else.

      other thoughts:
Joan Allen should have taken home gold for THE CRUCIBLE.
Julianne Moore for PRIZEWINNER OF DEFIANCE OHIO.
Finney for TOM JONES (yes, even tho Poitier won)
      Depp for SWEENEY TODD

    86. Pierre de Plume March 5th, 2009 at 12:32 am 86

SeattleMoviegoer — yes, I was disappointed about that. I guess the film wasn’t considered good enough material and she was considered passé. Too bad. Even an honorary one would be nice to see.

And Bjork also deserves a special Oscar for her swan outfit and the song she sang from Dancer in the Dark during the Oscarcast.

    87. Marianne March 5th, 2009 at 12:45 am 87

Pfeiffer, most overdue? Are you kidding? She doesn’t deserve an Oscar, not in a million years.
Haven’t they heard of an old irish gentleman, owner of two sparkling blue eyes called Peter O’Toole? When I think of overdue, I think of this guy. 8 nominations in 45 years, NO OSCAR! No, that stupid “lifetime achievement” thing doesn’t count.
His pal, the once stunning Albert Finney (both Peter and Albert were quite the studs back in the day) has almost the same bad luck. 5 nominations and no Oscar. Ian McKellen, other british thespian is among the great actors neglected by the AMPAS.
Julianne Moore seriously deserves her chance. She’s awesome. Same with Laura Linney. She’s a class act, she plays virtually every part with so much passion and dignity. Fucking Hilary Swank has two Oscars and Linney = zero. You can’t be serious, can you? Linney’s résumé is much more impressive. Swank is very much of a “one – or two! – hit wonder”. She made two decent movies in her whole life and won Oscars for them both. Talk about luck…
I wouldn’t say Leo or Depp are overdue because, I think they are very, very close to win. I think they are the next in line. Maybe Johnny for 2010 and Leo for 2011? Or the opposite? Or even a victory for them both in the same year, one for supporting and the other one for lead?
Poor Gary Oldman was never nominated. This can’t be truth. So awful. And Ed Norton, I know he’ll get his eventually.
I know he was nominated just once but, I’d love to see William H.Macy get some love. He’s great. I really like him. And his wife, Felicity Huffman, so unbelievably robbed for her wonderful work in Transamerica.
Quit this talk of “Meryl is overdue”. This is hilarious. The woman has two Oscars already. That’s enough. What about giving some room to other deserving actresses with no Oscars, like the already mentioned Linney, Moore, Bening, Close and Weaver? That would be nice.

    88. blizzards14 March 5th, 2009 at 2:31 am 88

      @afrika – BEYONCE? No, way!

Maggie Gyllenhaal should win next time (if she surpass Pfieffer) with the Catwoman role.

      1. Sherrybaby (Her role here as an addict makes Hathaway’s acting in Rachel’s a big joke)

      2. Happy Endings (How could she make a morally ambiguous portrait of a girl that could be compared to the loving bitchiness of Clementine Kruzcynski in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

      3. The Secretary (Her acting here was so real, suicide tendencies and masochisms were established without embellishments and EMO attitude)

      4. She was even good in not so good movies like Stranger Than Fiction and World Trade Center.

I think she deserves a recognition. And excuse me, Im not being a fan boy here!

    89. Scott March 5th, 2009 at 2:36 am 89

      Pierre,

Have you seen Dancer in the Dark? Based on your comment I’m not sure if you are just joking about her dress, or if you didn’t care for the movie.

(If you haven’t seen it I HIGHLY recommend it).

      Afrika,

I didn’t get your joke at first. When I re-read it, it made sense (“The Academy better put an Oscar on it” lol).

But I have to say that I find Beyonce a capable actress, and if other capable actresses can win for singing/musical roles, I see no reason that Beyonce might not win some day. She just needs to find a project where she can “play herself” – oh wait, she did that in Dreamgirls!

    90. Rob Y March 5th, 2009 at 2:48 am 90

“She just needs to find a project where she can “play herself” – oh wait, she did that in Dreamgirls!”

I know, it took me a long time to realize that it was about the Supremes and not a film about the ever changing line-up of Destiny’s Child.

    91. Hilary March 5th, 2009 at 2:57 am 91

In that list , the only person I think will EVER win an Oscar is Johnny Depp .

The other 9 people are all great , but their time and chance has
      passed .

I do not think any of them have a great chance in the next few years .

On a side note , Hilary Swank is the best actress of our generation and both her Oscar wins are richly deserved .

    92. Ignorant Shelby March 5th, 2009 at 5:42 am 92

Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kelly Macdonald, Derek Luke, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro all need to at least GET a nomination.

Most over due Peter O’ Toole, Albert Finney, Glenn Close, Annette Benning, Sigourney Weaver, and Juliane Moore.

    93. Aleksis March 5th, 2009 at 7:15 am 93

It’s a shame he’s turned himself into a running joke, because after having just watched “Two Lovers” I’m inclined to say Joaquin Phoenix. I’d say his brother was also slightly overdue by the time he died.

Oh well, maybe Joaquin will get a nom for his performance in Casey Affleck’s documentary.

    94. chrisw March 5th, 2009 at 9:14 am 94

Afrika, Beyonce is not a good singer. She wasn’t even the best singer in Destiny’s Child. She sells, but so did Hair Metal. She’s great at promoting herself and I respect that, she even has some catchy songs, but as an artist, writer and singer she lacks….a lot.

Anyway, Oldman needs an Oscar nomination. But, the most overdue is surely O’Toole, but I don’t see him in another nominated role. McKellen, von Sydow, Cruise, if he acted again instead of being an action star, Bridges, Winger, Moore, Fiennes, Linney, Finney, Giamatti, both Cusacks, and Carrey, and Ryder.

When it’s all said and done DiCaprio, Depp, and Amy Adams will get one. I have a feeling Turturro and Oldman will get a Supporting win one day. everyone else, with the exception of Linney and maybe Bridges and Giamatti will never get one.

    95. Tim H March 5th, 2009 at 9:21 am 95

My list begins and ends with Albert Finney and Glenn Close.

I agree with most of the major vote getters (Moore, Oldman, O’Toole, Sutherland, et al).

Let’s now take a moment for those who never won, and never will. Maybe Queen Latifah can reprise her lovely rendition of “I’ll Be Seeing You” while we consider:

      John Cazale
      Thelma Ritter
      Richard Burton
      Agnes Moorehead
      River Phoenix
      Barbara Stanwyck
      Garbo
      James Dean
      Natalie Wood
      James Mason
      Peter Sellers
      …the list goes on

    96. Pierre de Plume March 5th, 2009 at 9:40 am 96

Speaking of Queen Latifah, Tim H, I think she’s got the goods to win one although I don’t consider her as overdue at this point.

Scott — yes, I did see Dancer in the Dark and liked it a lot. I was being silly about Bjork’s swan dress, which has been criticized a lot even though, to me, it was the highlight of the show, along with her song segment.

Afrika said she was kidding about Beyonce being overdue (I didn’t get it either at first). But I do feel that Beyonce is a talented singer who’s quite capable of injecting plenty of technique — and emotional meaning — into her songs (though her dancing leaves something to be desired).

Marianne — generally I agree with your comments. Although I don’t agree with Swank’s second win for M$B, her first Oscar was well-deserved. But — but — Meryl Streep, despite having two already, I feel merits additional recognition because she’s that good.

I’m glad Ignorant Shelby mentioned Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kelly McDonald.

And Joaquin Phoenix — go man, go! You’ve got my vote.

    97. Marianne March 5th, 2009 at 10:10 am 97

Pierre, I agree, Hilary’s first Oscar was acceptable. But the second one was intolerable. I can’t get over it, especially because this award put her in a group she doesn’t belong to. Now she’s with Meryl, Jodie Foster, Bette Davis, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, among others. WHERE can you fit the Swank among these cinematic goddesses? She doesn’t belong to this group and never will.
And as I said before I have mixed feelings about a third Oscar to Meryl because, it seems like a waste when you have so many other wonderful actresses being neglected. And I feel that sometimes the AMPAS are too reverent about her. Sorry for the vulgar language, but, they nominate Meryl every time she farts. I was surprised that they didn’t find a way to nominate her for the god-awful Mamma Mia too. Something like Doubt for lead and Mamma Mia for supporting. But, don’t get me wrong, I love her, but sometimes, I find it all way too much.

About the random comments abour Beyonce: she has talent. To shake her “booty”. As a singer, she’s not that talented. She belongs to the Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey school of singing: “you will never be a good singer unless you scream hard enough to throw up your liver”, they taught, and Bee learned. As an actress, she’s a joke. And she can’t “write” (she can write?) a decent song to save her life. Yeah, she’s beautiful. But that’s ALL.

    98. billybil March 5th, 2009 at 10:14 am 98

Wouldn’t that be a hoot? Debbie Reynolds getting an oscar after all this time. I would love that. Give her a big, boozy dame role with lots of suffering and she just might do it!

    99. Pierre de Plume March 5th, 2009 at 11:04 am 99

I was surprised that they didn’t find a way to nominate [Meryl Streep] for the god-awful Mamma Mia too

      That’s funny, Marianne.

      Billybil, that’s on the money.

While drinking my a.m. coffee I took the time to make a tally of votes so far. These results have not been certified by PriceWaterhouseCoopers:

One vote: Amy Adams, Lauren Bacall, Brenda Blethyn, Steve Buscemi, Helena Bonham Carter, Don Cheadle, Joan Chen, Joan Cusack, John Cusack, Judy Davis, Mia Farrow, Lawrence Fishburne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Barbara Hershey, Samuel L. Jackson, Harvey Keitel, Diane Lane, Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Melissa Leo, Gong Li, William H. Macy, John Malkovich, Bill Murray, Brad Pitt, Kristin Scott Thomas, Liv Ullman, Alfre Woodard, Jeffrey Wright.

What’s interesting about this list is that Lauren Bacall, who was upset so notably, still only gets one vote here.

    100. Violet March 5th, 2009 at 11:09 am 100

That Juliette Binoche…I can hardly look at her to this day…she robbed the Oscar of La Bacall.

    101. Craig March 5th, 2009 at 11:15 am 101

I’ll throw my hat in with the pro-Bridges crowd. Could have won an Oscar for the shark sandwich scene alone (from The Contender). Whenever he’s on screen, something interesting is happening.

    102. billybil March 5th, 2009 at 11:32 am 102

This is a little off topic but trying to put Meryl’s 15 nominations into a larger context I discovered the following:

There are only 7 LIVING people in the world who have more Oscar nominations than Meryl Streep. They are:

John Williams (composer) 45 nominations, 5 wins

Woody Allen (writer, director & actor) 21 nominations (14 screenplay; 6 director, 1 actor), 3 wins (2 screenplay, 1 director)

Kevin O’Connell (sound) 20 nominations, NO wins (talk about being overdue!!)

Alan Menken (composer) 18 nominations, 8 wins

Randy Newman (composer) 17 nominations, 1 win

Alan & Marilyn Bergman (composers) 16 nominations, 3 wins

A few living people who might catch up:

Warren Beatty (actor, director, writer, producer) 14 nominations, 1 win

Francis Ford Coppola (director, writer, producer) 14 nominations, 5 wins

Donald O. Mitchell (sound) 14 nominations, 1 win

Gary Rydstrom (sound effects editing) 14 nominations, 7 wins

Randy Thom (sound) 14 nominations, 2 wins

Some major film folk who never reached 15 nominations:

Elmer Bernstein (composer) 14 nominations, 1 win

Darryl F. Zanuck (producer) 14 nominations, 3 wins

Stanley Kubrick (director, writer, producer) 13 nominations, 1 win

Laurence Olivier (actor, director, producer) 13 nominations, 2 wins (1 for best picture)

Frank Capra (director, producer) 12 nominations, 4 wins

Federico Fellini (director, writer) 12 nominations, NO WINS!!!

George Stevens (director, producer) 12 nominations, 2 wins

and, of course, Katherine Hepburn 12 nominations, 4 wins

Special note on 2 high profile living people – one of which I think will probably catch up to Meryl on nominations:

Jack Nicholson 12 nominations, 3 wins

Steven Spielberg (director, producer) 12 nominations, 3 wins

    103. billybil March 5th, 2009 at 11:37 am 103

Hey Pierre – thanks for tallying the votes but since I added my 2 cents over on the original Film Experience blog I want to add my votes to your tally. I’ll limit myself to my top 10.

      Leonardo Dicaprio
      Meryl Streep
      Albert Finney
      Robert Downey Jr.
      Joan Allen
Michelle Pfeiffer (like Nathaniel, I jones for her too)
      Jeff Bridges
      Johnny Depp
      John Malkovich
      Ralph Fiennes

    104. Marianne March 5th, 2009 at 11:45 am 104

I know this a bit off topic, but what can we say about Robert Altman and Richard Burton both with seven nominations, dying with NO OSCAR in hands? As I like to say, that honorary nonsense doesn’t count.

    105. richard crawford March 5th, 2009 at 11:49 am 105

the Marx Brothers. and my favorite all time actor…at least for today….cary grant.

    106. Marianne March 5th, 2009 at 12:04 pm 106

What about Paul Thomas Anderson? He’s overdue as hell, because he’s got 5 nominations and no Oscar. Of course, for different things (producer/writer/director). He should’ve won at least one of these.
Danny Elfman is too overdue. 4 nominations. No Oscar!
Michael Sheen is very “overdue” for a nomination. He was snubbed twice for the brilliant work in The Queen and Frost/Nixon!
I know they were both nominated just once, but, I feel the AMPAS is too unfair to Tim Burton and Paul Giamatti. They’re both great. Same with the amazing Tom Wilkinson. He deserved more nominations than he has. Hell, he deserved a victory, to be honest. I hope their time will come.

I think Nathaniel has come up with a good list there. I agree that all ten of those actors are overdue. And I agree with you, Sasha, that Ian McKellan and Julianne Moore are way up there. I’d probably put Annette Bening in my top three, as well.

Plus, someone not mentioned in Nat’s list that would definitely be on mine is Samantha Morton. I am in awe of that woman every time I see her on screen. If you ask me, she should have won the Supporting Actress Oscar for Sweet and Lowdown. I know she’s young and hasn’t made nearly as many movies as some of the big names on Nat’s list, but I think Morton is way overdue.

Also, DiCaprio. I love that guy. He should have been nominated for The Departed (though he was great in Blood Diamond, too) and he most certainly should have been nominated this year for Revolutionary Road. If he keeps giving performances of that caliber, then he’ll surely take home the gold one of these days.

    109. w.j. March 5th, 2009 at 3:22 pm 109

Definitely Julianne Moore, Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges, and the brilliant Alfre Woodard.

    110. billybil March 5th, 2009 at 3:30 pm 110

      You are so right, Aaron.

I’ve got DiCaprio at the top of my list!

    111. Afrika March 5th, 2009 at 3:46 pm 111

      Marianne

wow! wow! I think you are taking this Beyonce thing too far. I was only kiding about beyonce being overdue for an Oscar that is why I said “The academy better put on Oscar on it” mimicking her song “Single Ladies” (didn’t think I was going to be explaining this joke).
As for your rant about her singing, I have no comment. You think that Whitney Houston is not a good singer so that’s enough reason for me not to take you seriously. ;)

    112. Alan of Montreal March 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm 112

Wow Pierre and Billybil (re: your lists)…and I thought I had OCD! :o )

    113. dela March 5th, 2009 at 4:35 pm 113

Meryl Streep deserves to be on the list. When I think of the overdue actors I think of people who have managed to stay relevant without getting due acknowledgment. No one can match Streep’s consistently excellent work.
Winger, Close, Weaver, Pfeiffer (most probably by no fault of their own) stopped making Oscar caliber movies a long time ago. I would classify them as in need of a highbrow comeback.
IMO Pfeiffer doesn’t have an Oscar because seems not to care about it. She’s aloof and would never play the Oscar game, which Winslet did this season marvelously. I don’t think she actively looks for Academy friendly scripts.

    114. Pierre de Plume March 5th, 2009 at 6:12 pm 114

How could we have overlooked Tom Wilkinson? (Thanks, Marianne)

For old times sake, I’ll add Angela Lansbury to the list.

And Alan — It’s amazing what a morning caffeine buzz can do (OCD = Oscar Compulsive Disorder per Ryan C. Adams).

    115. Alison Flynn March 5th, 2009 at 6:39 pm 115

@Pierre: Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate = one of the best supporting actress performances EVER.

    116. WeinsteinHater March 5th, 2009 at 6:41 pm 116

      wow pierre de plume

      great job on the tally

      :)

      thank you

    117. Marianne March 5th, 2009 at 8:03 pm 117

@Afrika, I got the joke, I just made a random comment, not a rant at all. Whitney is a good singer (when she’s sober…), but I can’t stand all that screaming thing. Nowadays female singers think the only way to show off vocal talent is to scream. Nah, I like calmer and yet powerful voices like Cat Power or Nina Simone, for instance… :)
Hey, are you seeing the next movie from Ms. Cruz? She said she wants another Oscar. Just kidding! ;)

    118. gareth March 5th, 2009 at 8:30 pm 118

Bette Midler anyone? I think when given the right role she can deliver. My top 10 overdue actors/actresses are – 10 johnny depp 09 bette midler 08 toni colette (shld have been nominated for japanese story)! 07 helena boham carter (hard to believe catherine zeta jones has oscar and helena hasnt) 06 leonardo dicaprio 05 michelle pfeiffer 04 glenn close 03 annette bening (hilary swank should never have beat this amazing woman twice) 02 julianne moore (should have won for far from heaven) 01 sigourney weaver (this legend should have won for gorillas in the mist)! Would also love to see michelle williams, kate hudson elisabeth shue, laura linney, amy adams and scarlett johansson win some day.

    119. MarkyMark March 5th, 2009 at 8:42 pm 119

      MUST HAVE WOMEN:

      JULIANNE MOORE!!!!
      TONI COLLETTE!!!
      SIGOURNEY WEAVER!!!!
      LAURA LINNEY
AND JOAN ALLEN!!! (upside of anger, anyone!?!?!)

      MUST HAVE MEN:
go back to 1994 and give BOB GUNTON a god damn oscar for playing Warden Norton in Shawshank Redemption

for that matter, while you’re back in 1994, let tim robbins and morgan freeman tie for best actor oscars for Shawshank too! lol

But generally speaking, other must haves for men:

      Ian McKellan
      Ed Harris
      Leo Di Caprio
      and ED FREAKIN NORTON!

oh, and we’re overdue for meryl’s next oscar – give 10 more statuettes… probably still not enough!

    120. billybil March 5th, 2009 at 8:59 pm 120

Oscar Compulsive Disorder – I love it!

    121. Ibad March 5th, 2009 at 9:09 pm 121

First of all, Penélope Cruz gave the best performance PERIOD of 2008 and is by far the most deserving Best Supporting Actress winner of the decade. To say she wasn’t doing much shows a complete and utter ignorance for the craft of acting.

Secondly, most of the people on that list and being discussed here are hardly what I’d call overdue, as much as I love them. Peter O’Toole is the most overdue man in the business and was long before Kate Winslet was thrown her bone for a supbar performance in The Reader. I would agree that Ralph Fiennes is, and Leonardo DiCaprio has been showing oscar worthy work since before Kate Winslet’s burst on the scene as well. LIAM NEESON, HELLO. I also agree with Gary Oldman.
And I’ll now force myself to stay away from the boys club and think about the actresses. Hm. Meryl Streep has her oscarS, she is not overdue. Laura Linney is my favorite working actress today but she wasn’t really robbed of any Oscars. Michelle Pfeiffer probably should have won for The Fabulous Baker Boys but that does not make her the most overdue figure in Hollywood. The only woman I can think of is Glenn Close, but Nathaniel supposedly disqualified her because she’s stopped trying. Bleh. Whatevz.

    122. nancee March 5th, 2009 at 9:55 pm 122

I agree with Benning. I don’t know if it’s on the list but I kinda feel like Harvey Keitel gets no respect. I think his acting is very underrated IMO. Anyone know the scoop on him?

    123. andrew March 5th, 2009 at 10:16 pm 123

julieanne moore is no. 1 in my opinion. Should have won for Magnolia, Far from Heaven and/or The Hours.

i’d put emily watson in there- brilliant in breaking the waves but also great in hillary and jackie

And I’m totally with scott and wesley about bjork in dancer in the dark- devastating performance far above all other best actress nominees that year. Although she is not overdue for an oscar

    124. andrew March 5th, 2009 at 10:18 pm 124

and why would you call Streep who has won two overdue?? Yes its been a while since she won but she still has WON twice

    125. Pierre de Plume March 5th, 2009 at 10:26 pm 125

but what can we say about Robert Altman and Richard Burton both with seven nominations, dying with NO OSCAR in hands?

So true Marianne. I’d say they’re in good company. Some of them have been mentioned here — Garbo, Hitchcock. . . .

Alison, that sure was quite a performance Angela Lansbury turned in for The Manchurian Candidate. A big upset, as you no doubt know.

    126. dela March 5th, 2009 at 11:21 pm 126

Andrew, anyone who’s lost 11 times in a row is overdue in my book.

Alison and Pierre, I am with you about Angela Lansbury performance. Can’t believe she lost to Patty Duke. Actually, Patty Duke win proves how little Oscars matter. Legacy-wise Duke does even come close to Lansbury.

BTW, Pierre, thanks for putting out thoughts into a cohesive list.

    127. Pierre de Plume March 5th, 2009 at 11:26 pm 127

You’re welcome, dela, WeinsteinHater and others — my medium dark roast was particularly strong this morning.

      PETER O’TOOLE: He’s really overdue…..!!!

I understand Nathaniel love for Pfeiffer, but she’s not even in the top ten of overdue performers…

p.s.1. God, please shut the internet of that girl Afrika (her Beyonce acting infatuation, rest my case)….
p.s.2. Jealousy is bad, sore losers are bad and Penélope has an oscar yeah!!!, =P

    129. dela March 5th, 2009 at 11:31 pm 129

    130. shwgrl March 6th, 2009 at 12:06 am 130

Pfeiffer deserves it, just give her the bloody award. End of the story!!!

    131. wesley March 6th, 2009 at 12:07 am 131

sorry but i have to disagree about patty duke. yes, her career didn’t leave the kind of legacy others have, but her work in the miracle worker was brilliant. totally deserved the award.

    132. Marianne March 6th, 2009 at 12:12 am 132

I was thinking…some people we mentioned here are overdue, but will never win, you know? As Meryl said, you “run” for the Oscars. You have to campaign really hard and not all actors are made for this. People like Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman or John Malkovich are not “humble” enough to court the voters or the industry in general. They’ll have to give really groundbreaking performances (a la Helen Mirren in The Queen) to assure the AMPAS recognition even with all their disdain for the whole thing.

I love Kate Winslet and she was my favorite to take the Best Actress Oscar this year, but her campaign was a huge turn off to me. I’m happy she won, but, in my opinion, it was one of the most shameful campaigns of the last few years. Kate spent the whole season begging desperately to win and whining about her past flops in the Oscars in every opportunity she had. I didn’t like her desperation, it sounded pretty cheap to me. She was about to hang a watermelon in her neck with a message written in it: PLEASE, GIVE ME THE OSCAR, I BEG YOU!!!!!! :(

There are some marvelous actors who deserve Oscar love, but I don’t want them to behave like Winslet did. I don’t like to see actors “selling their souls” (I’m soo dramatic!) to win a statuette. It may have some symbolic value but, in the end of the day, it’s just a golden statuette. Sometimes, this object carries a deadly curse. Halle Berry, Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman (the last two ladies are just too busy in the fantastic world of Botox to care about acting. Although Nicole’s efforts to move her forehead while she presented the Highness of Smugness Jolie really warmed my heart) know what I’m talking about. ;)

    133. SeattleMoviegoer March 6th, 2009 at 12:20 am 133

      on another post i mentioned
      the main reason Angela Lansbury
is Oscarless. i’ll do so again…
for one reason or another she
backed out of the role of Nurse
      Ratched (after being offered it)
      in CUCKOO’S NEST.
the role had Oscar written all
      over it. ask Louise Fletcher.
i second the notion that Bette
Midler should get a little gold man.
if only Sally Field could give back
one of hers and Midler could have one
      for THE ROSE.

    134. dela March 6th, 2009 at 12:23 am 134

wesley, no disrespect for Duke’s performance. It’s a great performance but Lansbury IMO has given one of the best supporting performances ever to be nominated.

Marrianne, you bring up a great point and I don’t see Pfeiffer doing any sort of serious campaigning.

    135. onesimo March 6th, 2009 at 12:35 am 135

      Johnny Depp
      Leonardo Dicaprio
      Ralph Fiennes
      John Malkovich
      Gary Oldman

      Amy Adams
      Joan Allen
      Glen Close
      Laura Linney
      Julianne Moore

    136. dela March 6th, 2009 at 12:39 am 136

SeattleMoviegoer, we can come up with a long list of turned down roles.
La Pfeiffer, Jill Clayburgh, Ann Bancroft, Burt Reynolds, Various Actresses who were offered Monster’s Ball etc…
In reality, Oscar-winning performances are about precision, chemistry, momentum/backstory of the actor. The magic we see on screen might not be replicated with another actor.

    137. Winston March 6th, 2009 at 4:09 am 137

Excuse you guys, but Michelle Pfeiffer is a an actress full of quality, emotions, and feeling. She’s never been a robotic, technical method actress, unlike many of her peers (ahem, Ms. Streep and Ms. Moore). Instead she’s a character actress full of emotions, vulnerability, and MYSTERY. She’s always been consistent, never the one to sell-out the quality of her roles. Even if some of the movies she’s been in hasn’t been always sucessful, she always been the one to standout herself. Pfeiffer’s a perfect character actress masking in leading lady roles, and always running away with the picture.

Pfeiffer, like many of the great movie stars of her kind like Greta Garbo, Carole Lombard, and Julie Christie, has always have been able to transcend each role without any flashy tricks but with a quiet depth. It’s soo unique, it’s unexplainable. Just because actors get technical, or do so many roles in one year, doesn’t make you more risky, independent, or more overdue than actors who work less, but the quality never leaves. Quality over quantity. That’s all I’m saying and pfeiffer’s is that.

BRAVO MICHELLE PFEIFFER. Dont’ listen to the haters….You are overdue!!

      Marianne

I am sick of people like you talking about Kate shamefully campaigning for an oscar. So if interviewers ask “kate, do you want an oscar?”, she should have said “no! no! it doesn’t matter and I’m happy just to be nominated”? Give me a break! The media and the public had an intense amount of interest in Kate during awards season due to no fault of hers. If there was ever a campaign for kate to win an oscar…it was the public who ran it…not Kate. Please drop this ridiculous and baseless assertions. ’nuff said!!

      Winston

Streep is a robotic actress? lol, you’re joking right? your orgasmic obsession with Pfeiffer shouldn’t force you to make outrageous claims…

    140. Ross March 6th, 2009 at 3:05 pm 140

      Another Oscar for Meryl!
And Julianne Moore! I can’t believe she doesn’t have an Oscar!!!!!!!

    141. Afrika March 6th, 2009 at 3:09 pm 141

      ross

agreed. I think this list should make us understand that the Oscars is really not the best judge of good acting. PERIOD. The reason why we obsess and worship the Academy is elusive to me. Glenn Close has no oscar but Penelope Cruz does? I mean, what the hell?

    142. Alex March 6th, 2009 at 3:11 pm 142

Miranda Richardson was Robbed in DAMAGE

    143. austin March 6th, 2009 at 3:41 pm 143

Jeff Bridges gets my vote! Peter O’Toole has one — at least for his overall career achievement. Albert Finney — great, great actor — should have gotten supporting for that Julia Roberts movie, if nothing else. Laura Linney is one overdue chick. Those before a helluva lot of others.

    144. Alison Flynn March 6th, 2009 at 3:51 pm 144

@austin: lifetime awards don’t count in this poll. That makes Peter O’Toole top of the list of overdue. :)

    145. Pat March 6th, 2009 at 4:45 pm 145

Nearly every actor and actress mentioned in the replies is more deserving than Michelle Pfeiffer and more overdue. I don’t think Pfeiffer has done anything good since she married David Kelley.

My list of the “overdue” would include most of the ones already mentioned. I’ll offer my opinion on the best of the bunch:

      G. Close
      L. DiCaprio
      P. O’Toole
      S. Weaver
      R. Feinnes
      J. Moore
      D. Cheadle
      E. Norton

And from other categories: Kevin O’Connell

    146. Joao Mattos March 6th, 2009 at 5:54 pm 146

We can all name dozens of actors and actress that deserve to win, or at least, gets an Oscar nomination. The simple fact is that unfortunely there is lot of people to love, not sufficient love (nominations and awards) to give.

Pretty much the majority agree will agree that people with more than two nods as O’Toole, Finney, Close, Moore, Allen, Linney, Pfeiffer, etc, are overdue, one person taking a name or two of the list.

IMO the really overdue are the ones that give strong perfomances in the last ten, fifteen years (despite the fact that Glenn Close acting in “Damages” is at the same level or more amazing that any actress perfomance in cinema nowadays, when is the last time she gets a terrific role or/and gave a terrific perfomance in a movie?). So, Linney, Moore and Allen are the names amongs women. And Bridges among men (he is unforgetable in “Door in the Floor”).

And the most scandalous never-nominated names among acting are Donal Shuterland and Mia Farrow. I can’t understand why both are snubbed with decades of good work.

Among directors, Brian De Palma. But in his case I can think of hundreds of reasons for the lack of Academy recognition he suffers.

    147. Tim H March 6th, 2009 at 6:07 pm 147

This has been a great thread.

And I agree with the posters who all mentioned Toni Collette.
Just wondering: has anyone seen her GREAT work in United States of Tara on Showtime?? She’s about as amazing as you would expect. And an extra bonus is a certain actress playing her sister, who’s also pretty terrific: this year’s greatest Oscar snub, the marvelous Rosemarie DeWitt.

    148. Pierre de Plume March 6th, 2009 at 6:43 pm 148

Josh Brolin may not be overdue – but he’s due!

    149. Rod March 6th, 2009 at 7:01 pm 149

I don´t think Michelle Pheiffer deserves an Oscar, she is just a average actress, she is just beautiful, not a great actress. We have more talented ladies.

    150. Russell March 6th, 2009 at 9:59 pm 150

I am hearing a lot of BS on these boards. I think Michelle Pfeiffer is overdue, I dont’ know if she’s the most overdue, but I think she’s one of the best actresses out there without an Oscar.

Plus, don’t let her beauty fool you. She’s the shit man.

    151. Zach March 7th, 2009 at 7:34 pm 151

I’m surprised no one has mentioned NAOMI WATTS! She still does good work.

No one has mentioned SALMA HAYEK either, but if her best bud could win one, maybe she still can too. She, Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone, and Demi Moore are practically the only ’90s film beauties without Oscars.

And no one said MARSHA MASON, who’s basically down for the count, but was right up there with Jill Clayburgh for your always-a-bridesmaid feminist stars of the ’70s.

Glenn Close and Julianne Moore are obviously #1 for the women. Laura Linney and Joan Allen are also right on their tails, and at this point Laura Linney probably has the best shot. Michelle Pfeiffer is great and I would love to see her win, but she doesn’t really belong at #1 over Close or Moore.

      Amy Adams, definitely!

      And heck, MICKEY ROURKE!

Other men? JOHN TRAVOLTA at least deserves consideration. Johnny Depp will probably be one of the first popular choices to win one a la Kate Winslet.

      How about TONY CURTIS?

And Meryl is the previous winner most overdue for another trophy — BUT so is DAME JUDI DENCH. And CATE BLANCHETT also deserves 2+ Oscars and will undoubtedly win another one in the next few years. Same really with PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN.

From other categories, also THOMAS NEWMAN. DANNY ELFMAN. TIM BURTON!!!

    152. WeinsteinHater March 8th, 2009 at 6:50 am 152

annette bening is an average actress – plain and simple!

…speaks volume why she lost twice to hilary swank

there’s a long line of better actresses before her who are overdue of an oscar statuette

she only gets recognition for her average work due to her husband’s reputation in the movie industry

…….holy shit it just dawned on me

CLINT EASTWOOD long overdue for Best Actor Oscar

    153. WeinsteinHater March 8th, 2009 at 7:16 am 153

      one quick note…….

michelle pfeiffer or meg ryan should have been Oscar Best Actress winner by now if they hadnt notoriously turned down The Silence of the Lambs

better yet any actresses who had landed that role wouldve won undoubtedly under the great direction of jonathan demme

why do you think jodie foster literally fought and aggressively hunted that role down?

she’s nowhere near the choice of demme

the enormity and the timing of that movie was monumental

she knew it was goin to be BIG

oh the genius of jodie foster!

she knows what roles to play to get Oscar recognition – not to take away her actin capability

you know deep down both actresses, pfeiffer and ryan, made the biggest blunder in their movie career history – whether they admit to it in public or not

my gah it’s not like they’re takin off their clothes and embarrass themselves (i.e. ryan in in the cut)

‘oh i dont particularly agree with the subject’

Lord that’s the lamest and the most stupid excuse ever as an actress

yah i can go on and on about this topic because i myself is ‘regrettable’ for them (shakin my head)

      :(

    154. Pierre de Plume March 8th, 2009 at 8:45 am 154

WeinsteinHater, although I agree with you that Annette Bening is not overdue for an Oscar, I do believe she’s a good actress. In fact, she was a standout going back to her days as a drama student at San Francisco State University, and she had received an Oscar nomination (The Grifters) long before she’d even met Warren Beatty. Anyone who can tame Beatty has got to be someone special.

    155. WeinsteinHater March 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm 155

Pierre de Plume, I still think she’s an average actress – whether she’s overdue or not.

    156. Pierre de Plume March 9th, 2009 at 8:56 pm 156

I certainly can’t argue that point, WeinsteinHater. I think you and I might agree that the acclaim Bening has received thus far as an actress leaves no stone unturned regarding any talent or star quality she may possess.

    157. WeinsteinHater March 10th, 2009 at 4:35 pm 157

Okay cool. Let’s now get into our birthsuit and mudwreslte each other.

    160. Pierre de Plume March 10th, 2009 at 11:49 pm 160

Hi Afrika — I know your comment wasn’t directed at me, but I’ll throw in my 2 cents worth. I like Reese Witherspoon, although she was much more interesting early in her career than she is now. That sort of thing happens, of course, to a lot of actors. I thought she was good in Walk the Line but nothing very special. It was her “turn,” I guess people thought at the time. I know that some people find her irritating.

Bening, as I said earlier, is a good actress, but not all that interesting and not stellar. She may be nominatable, but I don’t see her winning unless she can come up with a really — really — great part. And I don’t think that’s likely for her at this point. I’d rather see someone like Melissa Leo win for what she did in Frozen River.

    161. WeinsteinHater March 11th, 2009 at 12:27 am 161

Pierre de Plume. Hahaha ‘okay. there. now im ready.’

      Hi Afrika.

To answer your question if Reese Witherspoon is the better actress?

      I wouldn’t know exactly.

I know you brought that up to acknowledge a valid point – Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar yet Benning has not won with 3 previous nominations.

But this does not change the fact that Bening is not overdue when you’re taking the list of other skilled and better actresses who are far more qualified as overdue: Weaver, Close, Moore, Allen.

It does not also change my view that Bening is an average actress.

The reason why Reese won an Oscar? It’s not because she’s a better actress than Bening, or anyone for that matter. It is because of her APPEAL AND CHARISMA and the fact that that year there wasn’t a strong performance where you can single out. She was the most LIKEABLE out of all the 5 nominees and she was in the most popular film. So you can add LUCK and TIMING as to why she won an Oscar.

      Bening is not overdue.

The most names are mentioned. Well, I hope Djimon Hounsou will get one in the near future, after two noms. I don’t think that Woody Harrelson has a chance (Supporting for The Messenger next year?)… @Alex: Miranda Richardson is also one of my favourite actresses!

You know, it’s a shame none of us mentioned Natasha Richardson. Not for a win, unless she were to get a really meaty role, but certainly she’s a fine, appealing actress who has always done good work. The problem is she has done so few films. Here’s hoping she pulls through this and people stop taking her for granted. She always reminded me a bit of Grace Kelly.

“I think, of all the films this year… maybe “The Hurt Locker” too… “Up in the Air” will be considered the definitive film of 2009 when we look back in 2019. It’s too raw for people to appreciate now. I’m thinking of 1976 when the Best Picture Award went to “Rocky” over both “Network” and “Taxi Driver” which are far superior films, but “Rocky” struck the populist chord (“Avatar”). “Up in the Air” is similar to “Network” in that regard, because it’s taking a very sharp knife to the world it’s trying to dissect, yet still conveys fairly human emotions. In ten years we’ll be thinking, “how did they not pick ‘Up in the Air’ for best picture?” Of course I’m assuming it loses, but maybe it still has a chance… who knows.

I for one was absolutely captivated and riveted by it, and would love for it to get recognition it deserves. Great Film.”
