The Ugly Truth

Posted by Ryan Adams On April - 13 - 2009

Great chemistry? familiar formula? or tasty recipe?

A romantically challenged morning show producer (Heigl) is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent (Butler) to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love. His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result.

Gerard Butler, Katherine Heigl, Cheryl Hines, Kevin Connolly. Opens July 24th. Two cute posters after the cut.

We saw a trailer and some extended footage for this at ShoWest. I previously had no interest in seeing the movie, but the audience was really into it and Katherine Heigl looked great.

Sooner or later one of the casting director couplings has to click, right? This looks like a good fit.

    Seriously? Isn’t this AWARDS Daily?

I like Gerard Butler best in small films like “Dear Frankie,” not bad musicals, dark warrior films or overly commercial romantic comedies. I won’t even watch this on DVD.

[in sarcasm font] This looks right up there with the masterpiece P.S. I Love You.

My stock comment on Gerard Butler: for a bad actor, he has tremendous range – musical Phantom, muscled Spartan King, Irish rock singer…

  8. Terry April 14th, 2009 at 9:28 am 8

Butler selling out, he is an average actor anyway. This movie looks lame. Heigl more appealing and talented than some of her more famous A-list counterparts, cough # Aniston Bullock Jen Garner Meg Ryan # cough. Though she is acting the same in every movie. I wish
she would pick more challenging roles instead of romantic comedies.
Matthew, what happened with him? Why did he sink like this? I
remember A Time to Kill and some of his early hype. He was supposed to be the next Paul Newman or even the next Brad Pitt.
I would say Colin Farrell fared better than he did. He is not even trying to act anymore or pick challenging roles or good movies.
I think both of these movies will do okay at the box office, they
won’t have much of an impact. The trailers already give you an idea
of how the story will unfold. Predictable, formulaic to the core.

terry, i read some tidbit with matthew circa ‘fool’s gold’ and he isn’t interested in uh, doing the sort of roles/movies you’d like him to try.

he said something like he used to think acting was adopting a different/persona/becoming someone else. now he wants to take roles that are bit in common/allows him to come across how he is off screen/in real life.

so that may explain your ‘he is not even trying to act’ vibe

Ugh I am SO sick of Heigl. I cannot wait for her to go back to TV trash where I can ignore her existence.

You can say that again, sartre!

  12. jennybee April 15th, 2009 at 11:26 am 12

Watermelons, I’m with you. Heigl is overrated and this just smacks of another attempt to find a good vehicle for her. Woman has no range.

sartre, once I invent it, the sarcasm font is going to be called Sarcastique and is going to be instantly recognizable as such.

Posting this trailer is meant to provide context for the half dozen other comedy trailers that we’ve featured over the past couple of days. It’s part of a larger theme being woven together, so thanks to everybody for pulling on this loose thread so the whole damn tapestry unravels

    8-)

I guess I’ll scrap my designs for Snarkalec Italic Sans Serif, too.

  14. jennybee April 15th, 2009 at 12:27 pm 14

Oh, no I think there are some fine distinctions between Snarkalek Italic Sans Serif and Sarcastique. Carry on, Adams. You’re going to be getting a lot of mileage out of both of them, I suspect.

Wow, a romantic comedy where the female lead loves with her head and the male lead loves with his dick. THAT’S original!

Gerard Butler, if you’re reading this, I’m being sarcastic. Same for you, Katherine Heigl.

Ok! if we are going to post trailers like “The UGLY Truth” on awards daily then I see no reason why Beyonce’s upcoming movie “Obsessed” shouldn’t be posted.

“The Academy is composed of mostly older members making this movie a dark horse. The acting is top notch, the dialogue is intelligent, and the subject matter is timely. The weighted ballot system may just push this deserving movie to the top of the heap.

Reitman’s picture is the most consistent of the nominated films I have seen, with each scene adding to the whole. Reviews have stated that some of the firing scenes were unnecessary and detracted from the film. In an odd way, they provided relief from all the tense personal relationships in the film, so I believe that the many interviews were valid.

Up in the Air’s kind of ending, somber, isn’t what is keeping it from being a mainstream hit at this point. The content that deals with job loss is the biggest detractor above all else, even though the subject matter is handled with expertise. Movies with somber endings are dominating the award season. Up in the Air, Precious, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker have far from rosy endings.

I agree that it appeals to older adults because of its subject matter. Job loss, lack of commitment, and the feminist bent of the film add up to something many forum posters will not champion because it doesn’t appeal to their young sensibilities. However, youth does not rule the Academy.”
