Kevin Spacey, Oscar winning Oscar host?

Posted by Ryan Adams On May - 15 - 2009

spacey1

Spacey wouldn’t be the first Oscar winner to host the Academy Awards, though it seems the trend in recent years has been to choose an Oscar host who’s least likely to ever win one. Nevertheless, Contactmusic says Spacey is thinking about launching an Internet campaign to land the job for the 2010 Academy Awards.

The actor has a great relationship with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, having scooped statuettes for The Usual Suspects and American Beauty, and now he wants to take over from fellow actor Hugh Jackman as the host of the 82nd Awards.

Spacey says. “I’d love to host the Oscars. We can start a campaign on Twitter right now.”

Could we talk him into heading up the whole show doing his Johnny Carson impersonation?

    I will endorse this campaign.

I’m trying to think of other Oscar winners who would be amazing at hosting the ceremony! HMMMMMMMMM

  3. Ryan Adams May 15th, 2009 at 1:05 am 3

No matter who hosts, I want Laurence Mark and Bill Condon producing again.

(I might be able to guess who you’re thinking about, Watermelons. The prospect of a wardrobe malfunction is enticing.)

    I’m forming a PAC on Spacey’s behalf.

Hummmmm, at this year’s Oscar, Kevin Spacey was here in my country and city (Brazil/Rio de Janeiro), trying to scape from the common photographers and the paparazzi team, while watching the first day (Sunday) of our Carnival parade, in the famous stateroom of a giant brazilian brewery. He was sucessful.

I can’t remember a single good photo of him in the papers, only some lame and distant paparazzi shots. It seems to be that every time somebody ask him to do so, he strikes a pose, but in the last second shake a little bit his body, “destroying” the image for purposes of publication.

What interesting is that he didn’t gave any interviews, but a gossip column (not a very reliable source, I know), publishes a statement by a “source” saying that somebody asks him if he didn’t want to watch the Academy Awards, and he said he has no interest at all, saying hat the cerimony is becoming very boring through the years. Probably he never said that, and the person invented it.

Anyhow, he is an amazing actor. It will be cool to see him hosting.

Jackman will be out? So, I’m in. I hated Jackman, I felt embarassed every time he showed up in the screen. Too hysterical for my taste. He acted like a huge and glittery dancing butterfly. Ridiculous. He may be great for the Tonys, but he’s no Oscar host.
I think Kevin would be much appropriate. He’s beloved in the industry, respected, he has a great timing for comedy and he’s got all the decorum/elegance that Jackman lacks. So, I’m endorsing the campaign!

    How about Roberto Benigni?

  8. Noah R. May 15th, 2009 at 9:02 am 8

No! Roberto Benigni is the last Oscar winner they should call. He’s an appalling clown in this country. Spacey, on the other hand, is a superb choice. Great fun when he wants to be.

Kevin Spacey is so 1999. His hiring would join things like the Best Pic nom. for “The Reader” and the increasingly atrocious foreign film snubs as further proof that the Academy is not nearly as in-touch as they’d like to believe.
PS: That picture of him is really disgusting

  10. RRA should host the Oscars May 15th, 2009 at 9:44 am 10

Doesn’t anyone ever learn? You don’t trust Lex Luthor.

    I think it’s a great idea.
Submitting the tape from “Inside the Actors Studio”
    should seal the deal.

  14. HaroldsMaude May 15th, 2009 at 11:06 pm 14

Kevin Spacey is a natural for this. I enjoyed Hugh Jackman, but Spacey could do and keep this gig like Bob Hope did.

  15. Afrika May 16th, 2009 at 12:07 am 15

I hope Beyonce performs again at next year’s oscar.

  16. jennybee May 16th, 2009 at 5:40 am 16

Fantastic link, Nancy! I knew he did impersonations, but I’d not seen many of them. Love the idea of Spacey hosting. The studio squares who are worried about the Gossip Girl and Idol demographic won’t go for him though. Not unless People names him Sexiest Man in the World 2009. Which would be awesome, but kind of a stretch. :)

  17. Adwina Lambert May 16th, 2009 at 7:22 am 17

Vina can only host the Oscars if it will also be his “coming out” party and acknowledge that he is a member of the so-called Gay Mafia in Hollywood! bwahahahahaha!! Come out first before you host Spacey!

  18. Adwina Lambert May 16th, 2009 at 7:23 am 18

Beyonsh*t should NEVER EVER perform again at the Oscars or any other tribute to presidents and musical icons and nobel prize winners or what-have-you!! This over-hyped shouting “singer” should just go away!! bwhaahahahaha!

  19. Michael May 16th, 2009 at 4:09 pm 19

Doesn’t Beyonce perform every year? That seems to be how I remember it because that’s the perfect “time to run out and get more mint springs for the mojitos” moment, right? Actually why doesn’t Beyonce just host it. Better yet redesign the statuette to be Beyonce, so we can keep hearing “And the Beyonce goes to…” Seriously if I never hear or see that woman again life would be more fulfilling. But, alas…

  20. Michael May 16th, 2009 at 4:12 pm 20

Kevin Spacey??? Talk about washed up careers. Could they not get D.C. Douglas?

  21. Afrika May 16th, 2009 at 4:16 pm 21

I see the Beyonce-haters are crawling out of their dampy holes..lol
    Hi Haters!!
    Hi Haters!!

She’s already a legend. Join the bandwagon or perish in vain.

and here’s the great Beyonce and Prince…some saturday soul for your viewing pleasure

    Michael,

Spacey may not be the screen presence he was in the 1990s (largely due to his interest in running the National Theater in London and doing stagework), but his career is hardly washed up. He was significant in “Recount” on HBO, which by modern standards is like a major release. His selection for the Oscars will likely depend on ratings potential but he is not washed up.

  23. SeattleMoviegoer May 18th, 2009 at 1:14 am 23

Jackman was charming and he displayed
ample skill and panache as a song and
    dance man.
since when, Marianne, is proven talent along those
lines the subject of scorn? “glittery, dancing butterfly”?
    hardly.
Spacey would want to show off his
chops as well. Anyone see BEYOND THE SEA?
i’d still like to see Bette Midler have a shot at it.
she’s far more entertaining than Whoopie.

I totally agreed,HaroldsMaude. You are so right!

    Kevin Spacey is amazing actor.
Probably there was a period of time his film choices was not very good..But every great actors has these times. He is a truly gifted actor. And that voice! I think he is perfect for Oscar host. He is my dream host.

    Sorry for my poor English.

Well, if offered the opportunity I’d think he’d do it; I’d love to see him host the Oscars.

    But he tweeted today:

I was joking about the host Oscar campaign! Some are taking it serious. Will be too busy training for next Shuttle launch, not available.

regardless of his abilities as host, spacey has a huge ego. he just wants to feed it.

“The Academy is composed of mostly older members making this movie a dark horse. The acting is top notch, the dialogue is intelligent, and the subject matter is timely. The weighted ballot system may just push this deserving movie to the top of the heap.

Reitman’s picture is the most consistent of the nominated films I have seen, with each scene adding to the whole. Reviews have stated that some of the firing scenes were unnecessary and detracted from the film. In an odd way, they provided relief from all the tense personal relationships in the film, so I believe that the many interviews were valid.

Up in the Air’s kind of ending, somber, isn’t what is keeping it from being a mainstream hit at this point. The content that deals with job loss is the biggest detractor above all else, even though the subject matter is handled with expertise. Movies with somber endings are dominating the award season. Up in the Air, Precious, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker have far from rosy endings.

I agree that it appeals to older adults because of its subject matter. Job loss, lack of commitment, and the feminist bent of the film add up to something many forum posters will not champion because it doesn’t appeal to their young sensibilities. However, youth does not rule the Academy.”
