Toy Story 3 teaser

Posted by Ryan Adams On May - 29 - 2009

It’s Pixar’s world; we just wish we could live in it. With this summer’s Up mission accomplished, and before we can say, “Next!” the new teaser for Toy Story 3 appears. We assume this preview will be seen preceding screenings of Up, but Alex Billington at First Showing has a copy for us to borrow beforehand.

This teaser squeezes more cuteness out of 43 seconds than many movies manage in 2 hours. Directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., and Finding Nemo). Written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine).

June 17, 2010: Armond White writes a scathing article deriding Toy Story 3, and thus, ending its 100% rating on Tomatoes.

    2. Proman May 29th, 2009 at 12:37 pm 2

What, no “spam” jokes for this sequel?

I love Pixar but I’m also sympathetic to DreamWorks Animation.

    3. Jim May 29th, 2009 at 12:38 pm 3

Yeah, that is just so cute and for once it’s not annoying for being cute. I mean they’re TOYS!!! They’re Pixar first toys ever! I really don’t care if it stinks like Shrek 3, I’m there opening night.

      “Eh, supervising!” LMAO so piggie!!!

    4. Noah May 29th, 2009 at 12:40 pm 4

Armond White wrote negative reviews for Slumdog, The Reader, Benjamin Button, and Milk [he didn't publish a review for Frost/Nixon] in addition to slamming Wall-E, The Dark Knight, Frozen River, and Doubt.

      What… a douchebag.

On a more related note, I can’t wait for Toy Story 3. I’m interested to see what Michael Arndt does with the characters.

    5. Ryan Adams May 29th, 2009 at 12:49 pm 5

… and yet, Armond White bestowed a fresh ripe tomato on Bedtime Stories (RT average: 23%)

“That Skeeter benefits from what he does for his niece and nephew is an object lesson in responsibility and benevolence — and it blesses the audience, too.”

I didn’t see Bedtime Stories, but being forced to watch Adam Sandler get a lesson in benevolence sounds more like a waterboarding than a blessing.

    6. Jim May 29th, 2009 at 12:54 pm 6

It seems they retain all the characters’ traits and high light them very carefully, esp. Ham, Mr. Potato Head, Jessie, Slinky, of course Woody and Buzz, and those “oooooh” of the Martians are just so spot on.

I know it’s just a teaser, but still, very well done.

    7. Danny May 29th, 2009 at 4:02 pm 7

      AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! Can’t wait.

    8. RRA is way up for UP May 29th, 2009 at 4:59 pm 8

Ryan – BEDTIME STORIES, sorta like those NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM pictures, has a great decent premise, opens tons of creative narrative doors in potential…and the filmmakers instead go to the bathroom, and use a mindless drone plot.

One good thing about STORIES though, was that Guy Pearce hotel pitch. I mean really, a Broadway Musical Hotel? That’s like the worst idea ever for a theme hotel if you ask me. Though some at AD would love to stay there I persume.

In short Ryan, skip STORIES and that MUSEUM stuff. Skip it like acne on your ass.

Finally, a Pixar movie that I’m actually excited to see. That’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed movies like Wall-E, or The Incredibles, but they’ve never been the kind of movie where I’ve wanted to go out on opening day to catch…same goes for Up…but Toy Story just does it for me for some reason.

    10. RRA puts his toys Away May 29th, 2009 at 5:03 pm 10

As for the TOY STORY 3 teaser….my crowd at the UP screening really enjoyed UP, but they went wild with that TS3 trailer.

Ryan, I have a pet thought: Maybe that whole cute thing you mentioned, it might have to do with how long that whole franchise has been around.

I mean by 2010, it will be 15 years since the first TOY STORY. I was a kid in grade school, and starting high school when #2 came out, or 11 years ago.

Now out of college for #3…well that’s my pet thought at least. Nostalgia can be powerfully influencing biased agent.

    13. Nick K. May 29th, 2009 at 8:02 pm 13

This makes me nostalgic. I can’t wait for this one. It’ll be like seeing old friends that you haven’t seen in a very long time.

    14. S.T. Stevens May 29th, 2009 at 8:41 pm 14

Still curious to see who will be replacing the late great Jim Varney as Slinky, loved that character in the first two movies.

    15. Chamboosy May 29th, 2009 at 10:58 pm 15

What’s the one after trifecta? Quinella?

      Ratatouille -> Wall-E -> Up -> Toy Story 3 for best animated?

I hope not. I’m kinda hoping for a Ponyo upset next year. Or Coraline.

    16. Kholby May 29th, 2009 at 11:02 pm 16

      Nostalgia.

I had goosebumps the whole way through…

Not only does it make me want to watch the other two over and over again, it makes me want to break out some of my old toys!

      *Chambossy! Hateful!

    17. Zeta Phi 708 May 30th, 2009 at 8:45 am 17

I have heard thru the grapevine that Disney/Pixar will be re-releasing Toy Story 1 and 2 in theaters as a double feature this October. I don’t remember if they are reformating these for digital 3D or just digital. I am sure they will also be in 35mm film for those theaters w/o digital projection.

    18. RRA bets that TOY STORY 3 is the monster hit of summer 2010 May 30th, 2009 at 9:04 am 18

Zeta – I think they’ll be re-released in 3-D, like that NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS re-release, which I must say impressed me with that new process where 2-D is transformed into 3-D.

    19. Tay Tay May 30th, 2009 at 12:06 pm 19

Wouldn’t it be funny if Toy Story 3 was nominated for Best Picture and won!?!? I can only dream…

    20. Chamboosy May 31st, 2009 at 6:05 am 20

Kholby – yes, hateful, but really, when one group monopolises a specific awards group (such as the animated Oscar) it becomes a little tiresome. Sure, let the best film win, but we all know that doesn’t happen very often.

Maybe I’m just angry that the rest of the animation community isn’t really picking up their game and matching Pixar’s quality.

Sidenote: Shouldn’t Monsters Vs Aliens be in the Best Animated Feature section? It was a pretty good little film, enjoyable references, nicely animated.

    21. Noah R. May 31st, 2009 at 12:10 pm 21

I really hope Toy Story 3 doesn’t fall privy to the recent rule of the third film in a trilogy sucking beyond compare.

And Chamboosy, I understand where you’re coming from, but the fact is that Pixar is leading the way in animation because they actually tell stories. Haven’t seen Coraline yet, and Hayao Miyazaki’s films are always marvelous, but maybe Dreamworks etc. would do better in the Animated Film department if they didn’t just throw gags together and hope for the best. If I wanted that, I’d turn on Teletubbies. Seriously. It’s trippy as hell and more entertaining than Ice Age 2 any day.

    22. Nick K. May 31st, 2009 at 12:13 pm 22

Noah: The one exception I can think of from recent times is the LOTR trilogy. Return of the King was my second favorite in the series (right behind Fellowship, simply because Fellowship was the first)

Chamboosy: M v. A was good, but Coraline or Mary and Max would be even better, IMO. This is actually turning out to be a pretty good year for animation. So far, my two favorite films of the year are ‘Coraline’ and ‘Up’.

    23. blarsenusc May 31st, 2009 at 2:32 pm 23

Animated films really are leading the charge this year. Of my top 4 so far this year 3 of them are animated, and great animated films at that: Up, Coraline, and Sita Sings the Blues (which sadly still doesn’t have a distributor but is available on YouTube).

    24. RRA is full of it (Helium) May 31st, 2009 at 10:10 pm 24

Ryan – Not to toot your horn or anything (which you don’t need my help on :) ), but SpoutBlog mentioned your response to the teaser:

      http://blog.spout.com/2009/05/29/toy-story-3-trailer-teases-perfectly-today-in-film-bloggery-052909/

Interestingly, Michael Keaton is in TOY STORY 3 apparently as Ken. There is something slightly awesome about that casting.

    25. Nick K. May 31st, 2009 at 10:47 pm 25

I can’t wait for this movie, but I really hope it is “Return of the King” rather than “Godfather III”. It took Godfather over a decade to get a sequel. And it took ‘Toy Story’ a decade to….

      uh oh.
