Bridesmaids: $168 million
The Help: $147 million
Last night’s Emmys had a few people tweeting about Melissa McCarthy and her surprise Emmy win. Some even tweeted that this was really a win for Bridesmaids. So what of Bridesmaids? A male dominated field finds a successful female-driven interloper. In fact, 2011 is shaping up to be strong on women writers and directors, but also strong on box office successes like Bridesmaids and The Help. Even though some were saying that Bridesmaids had been dissed by critics I was surprised to see that it actually has quite good reviews, many scores of 100 on Metacritic, in fact. And not by nobodys either:
The Wall Street Journal, Slate, the Chicago Reader, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, TIME, Ebert all loved Bridesmaids.
When asked about her success as a writer some time last year, Tina Fey lamented how few female stars from Saturday Night Live go on to have successful film careers. And yet here an example, a big one, right in front of us — and it’s something of a phenomenon, I think. Still, the Oscars are a boys club, we know this. Generally speaking, women have a hard time cracking the writing and directing categories – it happens sometimes, just not often enough, and one area that the Oscars have long been woefully out of touch with is comedy. Seriousness rules the day at the Oscars, give or take a Kevin Kline, a Marisa Tomei, a Diane Keaton, or a Woody Allen. They acknowledge comedy if it’s polished enough but they rarely award the women who churn it out.
And so that brings us to Bridesmaids, which is about to come out on DVD. Because of Melissa McCarthy last night, the box office take, and the true phenomenon that it has become, I think it’s time to start taking Bridesmaids seriously. And Melissa McCarthy seriously. And original screenplay seriously.
Then again, everyone thought The Hangover could make it into the Oscar race but it didn’t. So who knows. But I’m willing to be wrong if I’m wrong. I just think that the rarity of it could propel it forth — and perhaps help to kick down a few doors for funny women – funny women who, you know, don’t have to be a size 2.
People get it wrong! Melissa McCarthy didn’t win Emmy because of Bridesmaids!!! Her submission episode, FIRST DATE, was just simply very very very hilarious. If you love her in Bridesmaids, check out that episode! She was drunk in that episode, and people (in this case The Academy) love nut Melissa. Just like Bridget Jones, Melissa is a critical mass of cuteness!!! She can do no wrong.
I really hope she got nominated for Oscar.

I just saw Bridesmaids last night and while I didn’t love it, Melissa McCarthy was INCREDIBLE! The only thing I’d ever seen her in before was that awful Life As We Know It, and she was funny in that too, but she just lit up Bridesmaids every time she was onscreen. Would love to see her get some recognition but it’ll most likely be Golden Globes all the way. Oscar doesn’t seem to care about comedy, especially of the female sort, to reiterate what you said.

Please be right. I’ve seen The Tree of Life, I’ve seen Drive, I’ve seen The Help and Contagion and Midnight in Paris… While all of them are wonderful, I personally think that Bridesmaids is more appealing and has fewer glaring faults than any of the films listed above. It be great to see it get a little recognition.

I think the best precedence for this would be Joan Cusack in Working Girl, but that film had the biggest box office draw in the 80’s (Ford), THE it girl of the moment (Griffith, who also got in), Mike Nichols, and one of the frontrunners for the trophy in Sigourney Weaver to help bring Cusack along for the ride. Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada also comes to mind (landing in a precursor but not the Oscars, which I think is far more likely).

I think Bridesmaids has a better shot than The Hangover simply because it’s a better film. The screenplay features characters who aren’t just caricatures and punchlines. There’s some depth and heft to the performances, especially Wiig’s, and McCarthy delivers one of the funniest performances in recent memory. I’m really hoping the movie finds its way to some awards attention.

@Stephen Holt:
It was Diane Cilento, not Joan Greenwood, who was the third supporting actress nominee from “Tom Jones.” Just clarifying.

I have to say I LOVED “The Help.” Color me shocked! SHOCKED! It had me at “Hello.” It’s a WONDERFUL film. And talk about strong female performances! And yes, I think Sasha’s totally write in championing the great Viola Davis in lead. And then Carpathia Spenser in Supporting could easily be nominated, too. Ditto Jessica Chastain, in her strongest performance in this her incredible year. And Bryce Dallas Howard’s horrible villainess! Best thing she’s ever done! And being Ron Howard’s daughter and her never being better, she could get nominated, too! And then there’s Vanessa Redgrave in Harvey Weinstein’s “Coriolanus.” Could all THREE Supporting Actress performances Spencer, Dallas Howard, and Chastain? Well, it happened in “Tom Jones” when three great British actresses, Dame Edith Evans, Joyce Redman and Joan Greenwood all got nominated for their excellent work. Albeit in a comedy, But it was a comedy that won Best Picture and just about everything else that year. But Supporting Actress went to another Briish comedienne, Dame Margaret Rutherford! For “The V.I.P.” yet!

I always thought that Cameron Diaz’s performance in Being John Malkovich was brilliant and completely overlooked.

There is a precedent for women being nominated for comedies. Off the top of my head there is Madeline Kahn for Blazing Saddles.

I’m not sure about McCarthy’s chances, but she cracked me the hell up in that movie. I’d love to see her and/or Bridesmaids get nominated.

I think a MAJOR factor in McCarthy’s win last night that everyone is overlooking is her moment during the nomination announcement. Her over-the-top, giddy reaction is exactly the kind of thing Academies (Television and Film) love, and did a lot to endear her to people enough to want to vote for her (in addition to Bridesmaids and being a long-working professional who’s paid her dues).
I’m so stubbornly certain that it’s at least 25% of the reason for her win. I’d trumpeted her as a dark horse ever since that moment, and stuck with her in my final predix. You never can overestimate those little moments of genuine emotion, especially if they come prior to the big ceremony, such as in precursors and interviews, etc.

LOL Ryan, when I saw the original comment about Cameron Diaz, I thought it was your way of saying “it ain’t gon’ happen” about McCarthy getting nominated.

If Melissa McCarthy really won her Emmy last night for Bridesmaids, why didn’t Kristin Wiig win an Emmy last night? She was nominated, after all.

I don’t know if she will be nominated but Melissa McCarthy’s performance in Bridesmaids is my favourite supporting performance of the year. It is deceptively good. We all know that McCarthy is hilarious in the movie and her comedic timing is perfect. But, the best scene in the film is when Megan goes to see Annie, who has become a hermit in her house. McCarthy is funny in this scene too, but she also manages to bring a certain gravitas to the preceedings and a kind of pathos when telling the story of her growing up in high school and overcoming her past. And the way she puts Annie in line is also so well done by McCarthy. That scene, which blends both comedy and “a serious moment” could have been completely corny but it is a success because of McCarthy.
FYC: Melissa McCarthy, Best Supporting Actress.

“Bryce H., to be fair if Bridesmaids gets a script-nod, it won’t be because “it MADE A LOT OF MONEY” – that theory would secure basically every dumb Adam Sandler-comedy a script-nod – it will be because critics LOVED it : 90 RT, 75 MC, 82 BFCA.”
Yes, I know. But you’re being fair. Which is fine. I don’t want to be fair. If I had any power (which I obviously don’t), I would bribe Globe voters to NOT give Bridesmaids a Best Comedy/Musical nod. Comedy Actress Wiig I’m okay with…(to my eyes, she and Jon Hamm were the most respectable parts of the movie)
But an Oscar nominated screenplay? My Big Fat Greek Wedding (nine years ago) is the only precedent for this kind of thinking. The movie’s…comedic set piece (for lack of a better term?)…is a scene – MINI-SPOILER – where the cast starts throwing up and shitting themselves (one in the street, one in a sink) because of food poisoning and CRITICS give this movie a PASS? Jesus, that scene was what had the audience cracking up the most…and it is No. Different. Than. A. Sandler. Comedy. /minirant
“The critics put it on the map, the spectacular Box Office simply secures the luxury that voters probably won’t forget it as easily as they probably do a lot of well-received comedies with early release dates and unspectacular Box Office.”
Yeah, again, I know. The reason I brought up Beginners, 50/50, Martha Marcy is that they will…probably be more worthy screenplays in my mind…but more importantly they will be in the conversation at Oscar voting time too, whether it’s because of potential Olsen + Picture + Hawkes + Song nods, Christopher Plummer win, Levitt + Picture (depending on box-office) + Globes attention, etc.
For Bridesmaids its buzz will be about a script thanks to it being one of the highest grossing comedies of the year. (I have no doubt supporting actress hopes will be put to death by then)
Basically my point being, okay, you’re right that this film will be a contender for screenplay because of good reviews. And yes, high box-office is what’s keeping it in the conversation for the nod, not why …but if this came out in November and grossed 50-60 million instead, it would hardly be in the conversation at all. I think box-office plays a bigger part than the reviews in this case.
Scott: No Young Adult trailer yet.
So, if I had to choose a female ensemble summer hit to support, fuck Bridesmaids, it’s The Help all the way.

No way BRIDESMAIDS gets nominated for anything other then McCarthy in the Supporting Actress category and even that is doubtful. If KNOCKED UP a superior comedy in every regard to BRIDESMAIDS – and also a film that was among the best reviewed of 2007 which was one of the strongest years for American film in recent memory – cannot garner one nomination, then no way does BRIDESMAIDS. It’s very, very rare to get an acting nomination for a comedy. Downey Jr. in TROPIC THUNDER and obviously the wins for Tomei in MY COUSIN VINNY and Jack Palance in CITY SLICKERS come to mind.

McCarthy will be nominated for a Globe in comedy category.
I also think many women will be recognizes at the Globes.
Andrea Risebouroug in Madonna’s W.E. and look for Angelina Jolie racking up some noms.
This year the Globes will hail the women.

I think Bridesmaids has an outside shot at an Original Screenplay nom. But I don’t think Melissa McCarthy has a shot a supporting actress. To be nominated for a broad comedic performance these days, I think you need to be seen as THE driving force behind the comedy’s success. That’s what happened with Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean and Robert Downey Jr. with Tropic Thunder. While Melissa McCarthy is great in Bridesmaids, she’s just one part of a great ensemble, which isn’t going to help her come voting time. Who it does benefit is Kristin Wiig and Annie Mummalo, since ensemble comedies have a better track record of being recognized for screenwriting.
I do think McCarthy has a realistic shot at a Golden Globe nom though. You never know who they’ll throw in there.

I forgot that it’s possible to look these things up. Instead of relying on my delusions.
I swear, I really thought she was nominated. She was nominated that year. But not the Oscars. Satellite Awards and, um, the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards…
Gimme a break. I wasn’t paying close attention that year.
delete, delete.

We can probably eliminate the last 5 on that list, which leaves us with 5 likely locks at this point-
Drive
The Help
Moneyball
Midnight in Paris
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
Question now is what takes the other 5 slots?

BTW, not sure if anyone else has noticed but these are the only films of the year so far to achieve the pre-requisite BFCA score of 85 that has been required for a Best Picture nomination over the last 2 years
Drive- 91
The Help- 89
Moneyball- 91
Midnight in Paris- 85
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2- 93 (yes you read that right mother fuckers!)
The Guard – 90
Rango- 89
Win Win- 90
Super 8- 88
X-Men: First Class- 87
What this also means is if the BFCA’s steller record of pre-qualifying holds true then there will be no Tree of Life Planet of the Apes, Contagion, Crazy Stupid Love, or the film this article is about, Bridesmaids as it only got 82.

I don’t like wedding comedies. They always make me roll my eyes, but I did like Bridesmaids. It was fun.At moments it looked like a parody.Kristen Wiig was good.I hope she gets Golden Globe for her performance, if they don’t pronounce some drama as comedy so that somebody else could win.

Have there been more memorable supporting female performances than that from Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer? Probably so, but not with the amount of attention they’ve gotten. Obviously, there are three months of films left in the year, but at this point it seems like McCarthy or Spencer has enough support and acclaim to garner a nomination.

One more female-driven “hit” movie is Columbiana. It doesn’t have a big budget, but it has the next IT girl, Zoe Saldana.

My first thought was that yes,the Bridesmaids-scenestealer, that’s what helped her win and that’s why Rose Byrne will win her first Golden Globe in January BUT if Emmy-voters were influenced enough by the film’s success to award first-time nominee McCarthy in the Lead Actress category, why would they snub three-time-nominee Kristen “the LEAD and the SCREENWRITER of Bridesmaids” Wiig in the SUPPORTING actress category ?

I would loveeee to see Melissa McCarthy get in. right next to Octavia Spencer. no more bit non credited roles for these talented ladies.
The best precedent to make the case for a Melissa McCarthy nomination is Cameron Diaz

Wouldn’t it just be depressing if the four locked nominees for Original Screenplay turn out to be J. Edgar, Midnight in Paris, Young Adult, and The Artist and on nomination morning the WGA nominated BRIDESMAIDS (of all things) manages to beat out Martha Marcy May Marlene, Like Crazy, Take Shelter, 50/50, and Beginners ( and etc.) because it MADE A LOT OF MONEY?
To me, it boils down this: if The Hangover couldn’t make it in, there is NO WAY Bridesmaids makes it in. And thank goodness for that because I hated Bridesmaids.
