“These individuals are all incredibly talented and a credit to the world of filmmaking,” said Academy President Sid Ganis. “They exemplify the high standards of the Academy and I welcome each and every one of them to our ranks.”
The membership policies that the Academy adopted in 2004 in order to slow the growth of the organization would have allowed a maximum of 137 new members in 2008, but as in the previous years, the various branch committees sometimes endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.

Interesting to see that all the documentarians invited were women.
I agree about Ruby Dee–AMPAS is decades behind any sort of meaningful advances in inclusion of minorities and marginalized communities in general.
Where are Inarritu/Cuaron/Del Toro plus their cinematographers Prieto, Navarro and Lubezki ?
One has to question the Academy for having a member like Jennifer
Aniston (excuse me but when did she actually do anything Oscar worthy?)….and not Sarah Polley. Whose next…..Jessica Alba or the Rock? cough cough
. . . but I’m glad Mlle. Cotillard, Nancy Oliver and Tamara Jenkins made the cut.
“yay girl power!”
Ryan, I’m still recoiling in shock that you’ve applauded Diablo Cody.
And maybe the reason Sarah Polley wasn’t invited to the party is because one of the lines she wrote for Julie Christie in Away From Her criticized the quality of American films.
But the Academy wouldn’t be petty, would it?
WOW! Jean-Claude Carrière!
It’s nice to see Quebecois cinematography finally represented in the academy. And that, a day short of our national day. Thanks, AMPAS!
Jet Li ftw!!!!!!!!!
The more I thought about this list today, the more aggravated I got.
If AMPAS is going to announce the new debutantes, they should make available the entire list of all 6000+ Who’s Who in Oscar’s Inner Circle.
Plus, you know that this selection process has to be as hinky as the selection of Best Foreign Film nominees. “Various branch committees” sounds fishy as hell to me. Aren’t we all quite tired of superdelegates and arcane Illuminati rituals?
The phrase, “membership policies that the Academy adopted in 2004 in order to slow the growth of the organization” makes my teeth hurt. Is this elitist exclusionary attitude really something AMPAS wants to be proud of?
It’s all so NOKD, n’est pas? Rather sickening.
Here’s an outrageous plan: You get an Oscar nomination, then you’re perk is not simply “it’s an honor to be nominated” — but how about if that nomination automatically earns you Academy membership.
What’s the harm? Condo board skittish about new residents playing their music too loud? What’s the fear? Dilution of the Master Race?
AMPAS should be embarrassed to admit it’s taken this long to invite Ruby Dee and Jack Fisk and all the other names you guys have mentioned.
This list reveals itself to be some kind of superficial Sorority Sisters rush initiation. I really hate to imagine Marion Cotillard being subjected to the hazing.
The inclusion of so many recent newcomer names on the basis of such little accomplishment is also nothing I’d broadcast to the media. Seems to be based on the most shallow standards of name recognition. It’s like Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks winning People’s Choice Awards, even in years when they’ve starred in no movies.
“Diablo Cody? oh, yeah, that name sounds familiar. I remember that leopard print dress. In! …Amy Ryan? Do we know her? Can’t really picture her face. Blackball.”
It’s ludicrous.
It wasn’t until recently that Christopher Pummer was invited yet the likes of SJP and Jennifer Aniston are already members. One has to question the logic behind some of these invitations. Ruby Dee should have been invited long time ago. It is a popularity contest as much as anything.
Is Tilda Swinton already a member, if not then why did they not invite her if she won?
I think it is weird that Ruby Dee and Diablo Cody (i think shes cool and like her) got in at the same time despite Cody being really new and Dee being respected and loved (and always talented) for years. Shows in another area how slow the Academy is.
Jean Claude Carriere was also invited in 2006!?
It´s still an invitation.
Maybe Rudy Dee´s tenth nomination in 45 Years ???
Is Sarah Polley possibly an Member of the Actors Branch since 10 Years ?!
I agree about Sarah Polley, that was my first thought after scanning through the whole list…
But I couldn’t be happier about Tamara Jenkins, Nancy Oliver and Jason Reitman.
I thought the same thing too about Polley….my initial thought was I could see her turning down the invitation to the academy membership….no because she’s ungrateful, I just don’t think that would be her thing…
No Sarah Polley?
Jet Li? What about Jackie Chan or Chow Yan Fat? OR are they already Academy members and I’m just unaware…?
Jean-Claude Carriere should have been invited to the Academy 40 years ago.
I agree Richard, even some of the technical people, who have been making their marks in their respective fields, like composer Michael Giacchino and that high-profile list of directors, whose non-membership to this point is impossible to fathom. But there it is–the list is the evidence!
Doug Liman?!?! Shit, he should be bounced from the voting rolls for his mediocre-ass JUMPER. Really, with that and the not-so-good MR & MRS SMITH, more and more I wonder if he really was that solely instrumental in the most influential action movie of the 2000s in THE BOURNE IDENTITY.
Still, James Gray from WE OWN THE NIGHT included? Cool.
I’m a little surprised that some of these new members aren’t members before now. Like: Ruby Dee, Alison Janney, Gore Verbinski,…
Also, I want to know whose file did not get the stamp of approval.
Nancy Oliver
Tamara Jenkins
Diablo Cody
yay girl power!
I wonder why producers like Sheila Nevins and Neil Machlis are categorized as “At-Large”
Makes them sound like fugitives from justice.
