Paul: interesting bit of irony there. Wonder how the senator feels (assuming he’s still alive)?
RRA: at the time of White’s trial, there was still a defense called “diminished capacity”, in which an accused person could claim that they shouldn’t be held responsible on the grounds of mental impairment (due to factors like depression and, apparently, comsumption of too many sweets). After that fiasco, California passed a ballot initiative prohibiting such a defense. Also keep in mind, that Dan White had more than a few admirers at the time of his trial (though most of them have since moved or, more likely, died), and I’m certain more than a few homophobes made their way on to the jury.

James, you have missed the point completely. What could be better than gay actors playing other roles. That would mean we have finally moved beyond prejudices or typecasting. The thing is we don’t really get to see gay actors in any significant roles (lead or semi-lead) in academy worthy movies. Therefore, if we can’t even see a gay actor playing an iconic gay character (once in a while), there is little hope they would be considered for straight roles.
I might not be making much sense but I am just questioning the lack of gay actors in “highbrow” movies that start to come out in fall.
I don’t know, James. I think we’re all painfully aware of Sir Anthony Hopkins’ cannibalistic ways. The man never met a human he didn’t want to eat.

It’s strange to me that everyone is so hung up on gay actors playing gay parts… it’s called acting for a reason. You don’t need to be a cannibal to play Hannibal Lecter. What i like better is when gay actors get to play other roles, like Neil Patrick Harris playing a womanizer on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”.

For those keeping score: Denis O’Hare, a terrific film and stage actor, plays ultra-conservative State Senator John Briggs in Milk and is very openly gay. http://www.denisohare.com/denisacting/ArtShots/FrameSet.htm

Ryan – Alright, no more Hans Gruber-ism on my part.
Lauren – The guy does sound like overall a hero, and really I still wonder how the hell his killer got away with that “twinkie defense” nonsense.
Just watched the trailer and was very impressed with it . I lived in San Francisco from 1973 thru 1986 and witnessed the Gay Rights Movement with Harvey Milk so instrumental in it. He was a good and brave man and his assassination ripped thru me and the city in a way that I will never forget. Sean Penn’s portrayal is uncannily so like Milk even in the short footage available. This is a must see for so many personal reasons and I trust Gus Van Sant’s work will show the world what really went on, and Milk’s impact and importance for gays and lesbians then and now, 30 years later.
No time for hijacking, RRA. The Disney division handles that. The focus of my department in anti-apocalypse push-back. Basically our plan is to sustain an endless of cycle of sinning and born-againing, so the Rapture backsliders can’t reach critical mass.
I think that “Milk” is much more accessible to the academy than BBM was. If this film gets great reviews as I expect, I just don’t see how this film can miss a nomination.
Chris, what’s sad is that McCain probably should have been President 8 years ago instead of Dubya, or at least be given the GOP nod, and I actually supported him.
At that time, I thought he was a calm rational Moderate-Conservative candidate compared to Bush and those Evangelical wonder-woos. Now he’s stuck with them and Bush, and pretty much the Republican Party now is such that if you aint down with their version of Jesus, “Fuck Off” is the key phrase. Yeah Southern Baptist doesn’t count enough, you gotta fear that the apocalypse is coming tomorrow and that the gays are gonna hijack your children.
Ryan Adams might, but not everyone else. 🙂
I mean I’m for fiscal responsibility, but when the RNC this year talks of how they’re fighting to “cut rampant spending,” and this Bush Administration being the biggest spending President since Lyndon friggin Johnson, yeah its just weird how they’re fighting “Liberal Washington” as Romney said in his speech, considering how the GOP had Congress* for what, 12 of the last 14 years and the last 8 years the White House?
Enough of my piss-ant ranting.
*=Though honestly, the Democratic Congress has been lackluster…that is, if they actually did anything worth a shit. Thing is, they’re QB kneeling this side of the end of a game unitl Obama gets into the White House, then they might do something, what with expected gains in both houses. But so far, Pelosi might be one of the more mediocre Speakers we’ve had in a long time.
Tufas, what about Best Supporting Actor for Brolin?
BTW, having seen The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, it was quite eerie how much Sean and Josh resembled their real-life counterparts.
James Franco, as eye candy as any man can get, still looks like he’s brooding through a film. Its like he’s on xanax – all the time.
That aside, and mind I do love Franco in all possible unholy ways, I think, if this movie delivers on the trailer’s promise, if Sean Penn delivers that performance, then we have, nominations-wise:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Screenplay
Best Actor in a Leading Role
‘nough said. 5 star trailer, the way they all should be
T.
And here’s for hoping that Milk gets two supporting nods between Franco, Brolin, and Hirsch. I think Brolin will get in.
Milk will be a good movie, the trailer solidified that, but I can’t say it’s a real Oscar contender yet. I just have a feeling it won’t be in the final five, just a hunch though.
As for the RNC, and as a moderate democrat, I found really nothing wrong with speeches last night. The same as the DNC, talking themselves up and smacking the opposition down. Palin didn’t give a holier than thou speech, it was pretty well done in my opinion, and so was Giuliani’s. But that’s probably because I’m not what you call a “party guy”.
My father, who’s as close to a communist as you can get, can say the only Republican he would or could vote for is McCain, that tells me something. He’s not the walking disaster that is Bush-Cheney. And the only reason some won’t vote for himis because he’s a Republican. It’s sad. The youth vote, at least in Queens, and I’m 19, is serverly uneducated and an uneducated public is the scariest thing in a democracy.
Thankfully, I didn’t watch the RNC last night (nor any of its nights) because I’d rather keep my TV intact, as well as my mind. Inhaling paint fumes is healthier than watching that crowd.
A true shame that all the better leaders die before their prime (Harvey Milk, Bobby, Paul Wellstone) while the most venile and puerile live on (Rudy, Tom DeLay, Sarah Palin).
Demonic cult is not a strong enough description of such people, Free. I see the formation of an American Fascist Party. Too strong a description you say, here are the tenants of fascism:
1) merger of state and corporate power for the benefit of the wealthy elite
2) ultranationalistic and militaristic slogans
3) incitement of hatred against minorities and/or unpopular groups
4) fanatical adherence to fundamentalist interpretations of religion
5) no tolerance for dissent
If any righties are reading this (I’m looking at you, “Gentle” Benj) and take offense, don’t bother posting because I don’t care!
*sighs in relaxation*
That felt good. We need a venting forum around here.
Ryan – Alright, no more Hans Gruber-ism on my part.

All I can see of the RNC was the crowd demanding they drill for oil and Romney spewing something about not being the party of Big Bother. Last night was truly terrifying stuff. Orwell would be proud.
Milk cannot come out fast enough.

Really, perhaps 2008 was the right time for MILK to come along, what with that Palin speech last night, which basically is McCain flying the flag of “let’s get the culture war back on!”
Yeah no kidding. I don’t think everyone should be liberal, but man, it’s like watching a demonic cult come together with this (boring) RNC business.
LOL
There’s always the hope that the more often straight actors play gay, the more likely they are to convert.
Did I type that out loud?

Astonishing! This hits all the right buttons. Everything a trailer should be. Would love to see Van Sant at the Oscar podium.
I recently had heard somewhere that the ensemble of actors in this film were a varied selection of gays and straights, often playing the opposite of what they really were. This also is not to forget that the director himself, Gus Van Sant, is openly gay.
This will surely be one to beat this awards season.

Marshall, I agree. I know openly gay actors are hard to find in Hollywood. But, still in all of academy award nominated movies with gay lead characters (Philadelphia, Spider Woman, Brokeback, Capote, Hours, Before Night Falls, Cabaret etc…) I can’t think of a single gay actor playing a significant role with the exception of Ian Mckellen (Gods and Monsters).
IMHO the academy’s willingness to acknowledge these roles has a lot to do with a straight actor playing a gay role. I am not saying every gay character be potrayed by a gay actor, but Hollywood can certainly to a better job of presenting gay actors with bigger roles.
Though it’s a little off topic, I do agree that the trailer for LITTLE CHILDREN was amazing and while the movie was good, it wasn’t as good as the trailer led me to believe.
Really, perhaps 2008 was the right time for MILK to come along, what with that Palin speech last night, which basically is McCain flying the flag of “let’s get the culture war back on!”

I cannot wait for it
RichardA – Penn’s inspiration for the voice of Harvey Milk in “Milk” was well Harvey Milk.
Marshall: I think that’s an interesting point you bring up about there not being any openly gay actors in any of the major roles. I guess there just aren’t many openly gay actors in Hollywood…??
Astonishing! This hits all the right buttons. Everything a trailer should be. Would love to see Van Sant at the Oscar podium.

I’m interested about the inspiration for the voice that Sean Penn used.
Loved it too, and like jennybee I’m sorry this isn’t coming out before the election. Seeing Anita Bryant in the clip (and remembering when she made those comments) and seeing Sarah Palin bolster the conservative base of the RNC, I would so like to see films like this serve as reminder and threat.
Oh, and I am a big Sean Penn fan. I watch him here, and think of him in Dead Man Walking and Mystic River and am in awe of his range. And nope, don’t see I Am Sam in this either.
How in the world are people seeing “I Am Sam” in Penn’s performance? Have you seen footage of Harvey Milk? Judging from the trailer, Penn appears to have nailed it beautifully.
Also, Marshall: how do you know none of those lead actors are gay 😉

The main problem I had with the trailer (although I still love it) was Sean Penn. He’s definitely using the same tricks he used on I Am Sam, which doesn’t make any sense. I think it was jjj who mentioned this before me. He’s using all the same mannerisms, face ticks, and voice in Milk as he did with I Am Sam. Something not right there for some reason.
Debatable, sure… when it comes to film, what isn’t? 🙂
Holy crap.
This looks amazing! This could be a very very VERY important movie!
Mmmmmm… I need to see the film before I jump in the bandwagon.
debatable

What turned out eventually was a masterpiece, but that’s just me.

awsome. totaly.

at first i just couldn’t see Penn in the role. i hark back to when they first considered Robin Williams in another version of the story, and thought he’d be terrific. Penn looks to have nailed it. looking forward to it. hope the liberal/conservative rivalry between Milk and Brolin’s character is subtle and believable.
Mmmmmm… I need to see the film before I jump in the bandwagon.
debatable
That was so inspiring. I just hope that the film can live up to this trailer…..but I have complete faith. Go Milk!
Like so many others…I wasn’t convinced before. Now I am.
And I’ve never been much of a fan of Van Sant…. Elephant? Psh.

W – O – W…..!!!!
Wow, this is the best trailer I’ve seen in ages… Totally sold in Milk, I cannot wait
Sean Penn looks AMAZING! I cannot wait to see this movie, I’m so glad they did a good job on the trailer!
Sean Penn looks good, however after having seen I AM SAM the other day, I get a huge ‘retarded’ vibe from this Milk performance.
I’m so glad to see everyone seems to share the same reaction to this piece. Speechless indeed. God, I love the Fall.
ETA: Bob, that finale will surely prove indelible. I was bawling when I saw the real footage; this story is so formidable.
The biopic/civil rights hook will appeal to older Oscar voters. The politics of this film are right on so many levels.
As good as the trailor is, the films culminating march scene promises to be iconic.

I’ve been beating the bushes (as it were…) around LiC, INSIDE THE GOLD AND FATACULTURE regarding this baby.
All I can say is……………………………………………………………………..
WOW.
This looks to be something monumental. But, almost as essential, it doesn’t LOOK LIKE some overblown history lesson that feels its own importance to the point of pretentiousness or pomposity.
There appears to be a great deal of subtlety, nuance and genuine emotion.
Looking forward to this MUCH MORE than I was before today.
Pretty good trailer.
Sean Penn looks great.
Best Actor looks like an exciting race… Penn, Langella, Del Toro, Mortensen, Jenkins, Hoffman…
Fantastic trailer. I hope the film turns out to be just as fantastic AND is a bit hit. (Those pool scenes with James Franco certainly won’t hurt the box office receipts! Yowsa.)
I tell ya, as a person I think Sean Penn is an asshole, but he can be a terrific actor at times.
But if that trailer is any indication, we may finally have a serious front-runner for Best Actor for 2008.
Unless its derailed by a CRASH 2 or whatever bullshit.
So yeah, MILK is the best trailer I’ve seen so far for 2008, and it worked its job: I want to see it.
That’s right, I want to see a Gus Van Saint movie.
Holy mother fuckin shit
While the operatic bits were a little too much, this trailer jump-started my interest in this (not that I didn’t already want to see it, but not this badly!). This, along with Body of Lies, The Road, Valkyrie, Defiance Revolutionary Road, and Benjamin Button, rounds out my fall must-see list.
Can we just put up Sean Penn for Best Actor.
Josh Brolin doing a double nod for W. AND Milk (who might be a threat to Heath winning).
That trailer was amazing. And it’s pretty “conventional” for Gus Van Sant, no?
Oh, we haven’t even seen the movie yet, but that was chilling.
I write this with a tear welling up in my eye caused from what i just saw….this looks….wait for it….INCREDIBLE!
And setting aside what looks to be the male cast of the year, how about taking a moment and recognizing Allison Pill – she has been on the sidelines for years now turning in stellar performances…if this film hits, and I think it just might (as a gay man, i hope it will), perhaps we will see her name in the supporting race….
W – O – W…..!!!!
Wow, this is the best trailer I’ve seen in ages… Totally sold in Milk, I cannot wait
Just by watching the trailer I feel this will be one of my 3 favorite films all year.
Is anyone else going to run against Sean Penn this year? LOL.
It’s been over 5 years. Sean Penn with only one Oscar is a large shortcoming on the Academy’s behalf.
Its going to be an amazing movie, i will be there to see it.
Sean Penn is amazing in this one. It is a complex performance full of compassion and depth. Sometimes I feel he is a little too brittle.
This is one of the only times I read all the comments before watching the trailer, AND EVERYONE SEEMS TO HAVE LOVED IT. I agree with all the above. Not sure how it would look but man, I’m there. Not as crazy about Australia as everyone else seems to be, but this has my interest indeed. I’d say if nothing else, we have a frontrunner for Best Actor and a very likely nominee for Picture.
Sean Penn looks AMAZING! I cannot wait to see this movie, I’m so glad they did a good job on the trailer!
Sean Penn looks good, however after having seen I AM SAM the other day, I get a huge ‘retarded’ vibe from this Milk performance.
I think we got ourselves a resounding ‘sold’ on the Milk front. Looks like its a big one. Can’t wait!
As a side note, I have a question:
When was the last time two Best Pic nominees were released on the same day? (Milk and Australia both look likely so I think its relevant)
That was the first trailer I’ve seen in a long time that really got me jazzed about a movie I’d previously been a little on the fence about.
I’m so glad to see everyone seems to share the same reaction to this piece. Speechless indeed. God, I love the Fall.
ETA: Bob, that finale will surely prove indelible. I was bawling when I saw the real footage; this story is so formidable.
OMG. That was inspiring and exciting and energising in the way the life of Harvey Milk was. I am SO excited about this film now, and think Sean Penn will be the frontrunner for Oscar. Yay 🙂
Can’t wait.
But I did get a gay “All the King’s Men” feel…
The biopic/civil rights hook will appeal to older Oscar voters. The politics of this film are right on so many levels.
As good as the trailor is, the films culminating march scene promises to be iconic.
Good catch Matthew!
I was definitely not excited about this, but holy crap that trailer has certainly turned things around. I’m a big fan of Van Sant, but really don’t enjoy Penn at all. So at first I was completely indifferent. But now I’m super excited. That trailer was great, from the cinematography to the typeface chosen, it all looked great.
Little question which may make me sound like a four year old girl: was that Lucas Grabeel from High School Musical in there?
I agree. Looks great.
Two questions:
– Why Emile Hirsch first in the credits than Josh Brolin?
– It’s amazing how Gus Van Sant disappear from the mainstream moviegoer radar all over the world, at same time he directed four works in a row that almost made him canonized among highbrow film buffs.
“The director of “Good Will Hunting” (actually a very strong film)… If they put “The director of Gerry, Elephant, Last Days, and Paranoid Park”, people would ask “Who the hell is this guy?”

Wow,
This looks incredible.
Rob
I want to swear “I cannot F&*%&^ wait!” at work right now…..This trailer made me 100x more pumped to see this….
I’m not a big Sean Penn fan but he looks excellent in this. Great trailer, I can’t wait.
Wow! That looks rather great.
It also uses a piece of music I love (used in “The Life of David Gale,” not sure if it was written for that).
Love everything about that attraction.

November 26th is a busy day. The Road, Milk and Australia all opening the day before Thanksgiving.
I’m with you, jennybee. This makes a great political statement in a way that might inspire voters instead of sensationalizing politics. I’d like to see Milk swap release dates with W.
Haile to Van Sant!, I think he´s the frontrunner for win, this looks great plus Paranoid Park/an incredible movie theater experience.
Also the editing seems to have the style of To Die For.
Consider
Picture, Director, Actor, Supp Actorss, Original Screenplay, Film Editing
This is going to be epic.
Yowsa.)
It looks amazing, much better than I’d expected. Can. Not. Wait.
I wish it were coming out before the election, though.
To be honest, I wasn’t that interested, but after that Trailer I can’t wait to see it. It looks awesome.
OMG. That was inspiring and exciting and energising in the way the life of Harvey Milk was. I am SO excited about this film now, and think Sean Penn will be the frontrunner for Oscar. Yay 🙂
Can’t wait.
But I did get a gay “All the King’s Men” feel…

It looks amazing, much better than I’d expected. Can. Not. Wait.
I wish it were coming out before the election, though.
To be honest, I wasn’t that interested, but after that Trailer I can’t wait to see it. It looks awesome.
