Julia Roberts and Clive Owen do a fairly decent impersonation of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in what looks to be retro-romp mash-up of Entrapment meets Closer. Feels slick though, and the script I’ve read clicks along briskly with Tony Gilroy’s typically tight plotting and some sexy-snappy To Catch a Thief-ish dialogue (neither of which is very evident in this trailer.)
The good news: Now Stephen Soderbergh doesn’t have to make Oceans 14. Could this be Gilroy’s pre-emptive strike at Soderbergh for remaking Michael Clayton as a real-life agri-business whistle-blower thriller, The Informant? Clever maneuver. Less clever is releasing Duplicity March 20, when most people will still be watching the Watchmen.¬† Gilroy targets a totally different demo though, so it’s smart counter-programming. I’m a sucker for movies like The Italian Job (the 1969 original) and The Thomas Crown Affair (the 1968 original), so I’m actually going to stop poking fun now and start cautiously looking forward to this.
