I know the Oscar telecast is trying to boost ratings. And I know that they hope Avatar wins because that will mean Hollywood and the Oscars are actually …. the reality show they were always meant to be?
Producers Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot talk about the upcoming Oscars:
“One of the things that we have as an industry to celebrate in a really big way this year is crossing that 10 billion dollar mark. It’s the biggest year in box office history. Who we owe everything to, who pays our bills, are the audience.”
“I’m actually returning the show to what it really is, which is the best-dressed reality competition show on the air, so it’ll have that energy in it, really playing on the horse race element of it, so that there’s some kinetic tension in the show.”
Um. I’m trying to have faith in the upcoming Oscars telecast but when I hear stuff like this it makes me think they really are trying to become the embarrassing, tasteless enterprise they once were — in effect, rendering the Oscars beneath many of those who usually attend. If you thought most stars worries about their reputations attending awards shows before….
Oh, oh, here’s a thought. Maybe they could put up an 877 number and a text code so that the audience could pick their favorites, because god knows what we all need right now is one more reality show where the winners are voted on by the public.
