In honor of the Spirit Day, wherein we all wear purple to support LGBT youth, this vid. You’ve no doubt seen it, but this seems as good a time as any to post it.
What young people must realize is this: not only does it get better, but you get to grow up and watch the bullies fizzle into nothingness. Surely that’s worth staying alive for, among many other things. A story, after the cut.
A few years ago I got a letter from a young man who was on the brink of suicide after Brokeback Mountain lost to Crash. No joke. It seemed to him that it just wasn’t worth the misery of being alive. He wrote to say that he found AD that night and was able to find some relief. In my mind this website is like the place I used to hang out in high school. This is a silly thing we do every day, focusing on the Oscar race. But every once in a while it makes a tiny bit of difference to someone, somewhere. And for that, it has been worth it.
I am wearing purple today – on Facebook, on Twitter.
