Extended Synopsis via Press Release:
In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.
Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.
Love POE, love casting Cusack who’s an excellent actor that oft needs to be pushed out of his comfort zone, love 19th century gothic thrillers and its rare we get one set in the old USofA. Of course, this could well be terrible, but fingers crossed. And would Stallone get his magnum opus going!

I’m in. Will definitely see this movie. Cusack is such a good actor (Bullets Over Broadway, Being John Malkovich) that his casting alone is reason enough to see this movie.

This is very promising as, if nothing else, it suggests that this film will get an actual release, unlike most of Cusacks recent fare.

I absolutely love this abstract poster, and am excited about the films prospects as a lifelong Poe adherent. I am not sure it will all pan out but I approach this with guarded optimism at the very least!

The poster kind of reminds me of the Criterion cover for Cluzot’s Le Corbeau, which I suppose makes sense.
As for the movie, I’m totally stoked on it. John Cusack is one of my favorites, and I’ve always felt he’s underutilized in dramatic roles. I loved 1408, so I think he could really nail this.

I like the idea behind the film, but the poster …. it’s an odd mix between like, abstract with the little birds, and then the heavily CGI-d blood and feather, and it feels awkward …
