The parched anticipation drought wets up this week with three great trailers for War Horse, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Last night The Social Network dominated at the Golden Trailer Awards.
“The Social Network” came away the big winner at the 12th Annual Golden Trailer Awards tonight with four wins, including the top prize, Best in Show. The last trailer to win so many was “The Matrix” back in 1999.
“The trailer for ‘The Social Network’ lures you into the drama of the movie without any of the usual selling points in a trailer — its famous writer, or even the name of its famous subject—but you come away knowing exactly why you want to buy a ticket.” (Dave Lewis, HitFix)
Like the wordless trailer for Alien, mentioned yesterday by Twitter friend Anne Billson, the most effective trailers are the ones that break the rules (which makes you wonder why so many follow the same numb formula.) My favorites would have to include Psycho, The Exorcist, The Matrix, Jaws, Taxi Driver and the terrific PSA teasers for Fight Club, after cut.
I love how the trailer for La Dolce Vita turned its trailer into a tabloid slideshow of paparazzi shots.
Last night Fincher’s “The Social Network” won Golden Trailer honors for:
Best in Show Award
Best Drama Award
Most Original Award
Best Music Award

My favorite trailer of all time is from the 1950s – the Vincent Price classic “House of Wax”.
It was meant to be scary in its day, but is actually hysterically funny now.

I’ll keep a look out for The Tree of Life I want to see it it looks different and interesting. I believe some theatres have a no money back policy if you can’t watch all of it – ouch!!! To me that means that it is slow and builds the characters which is what I love – has anyone on here seen the movie?
I loved the trailer for Transformers 3 before I knew what it was then I was OMG no way. Matrix of course Keanu never looked so beautiful.
true about the no refund policy. We posted about that last week.
There have been reports of more walkouts than usual during the first half-hour of Tree of Life, to which I say: Good riddance. Get out!

Thanks Ryan for your very quick answer – it has been out so long in the US so it has expanded very very slowly I don’t understand how they can expect to get the $32m + costs back the theatre count is still at just over 200 theatres – that is not many at all.
I am in Australia and unfortunately my local cinema only plays guaranteed money makers. I thought Tree of Life would be one of those movies because of Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and the story.

This a little OT. I want to see The Tree of Life ( I enjoyed the trailer) but with the limited release it isn’t in my cinema – what I want to know is why didn’t this movie get a wide release? I don’t get it – don’t the producers want to make a profit or are there other reasons?
Are you in the USA, keryn? The Tree of Life will continue to expand to more theaters, but it will never be seen on as many screens as the biggest wide-release films because it’s not economically feasible for studios to spend the money on distribution costs. Plus, theater owners may be reluctant to book movies with limited audience appeal because they can sell more tickets for junk. Sad reality, I know.
If you’re in Australia, then Tree of Life has just arrived there on June 30, and might be in the first stages of platform expansion. If you’re in a fairly large city, you could see it coming to a nearby theater very soon.
(you could see it before I do — because I’m in the boonies in the USA where some movies never come.)

The first three that came to mind:
Pearl Harbor: The movie was shitty, but the trailer was great.
http://youtu.be/Xr6pVUv9cJQ
The Matrix Reloaded: Another example of the movie not living up to the trailer, but I must have watched that trailer at least 100 times.
http://youtu.be/HVrGMnk5E_M
Almost Famous: Unlike the other two, a trailer where the movie was better. Little did I know that the extended cut of the movie was even better.

If they’d simply left it alone where they should have, the first minute of the Face Off trailer in 1997 is a perfect example of what a trailer should be: it sets up the film perfectly without giving away a single frame of the movie.
But then they had to go ahead and slap on a minute of the movie anyway, too bad. Still, that first minute held me captive the way few trailers ever do:

My all-time #1 is probably the recut version of The Shining (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmkVWuP_sO0),but I guess that is cheating…so I will have to go with “Friday the 13th, part VII: Jason takes Manhattan” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5fc43O3ynE) instead. Pure brilliance!

That’s probably because Black Swan is a laughable self-indulgent mess that was made for the soul purpose of Natalie Portman getting an oscar. Probably one of the most undeserved wins in recent memory.

That Alien trailer is amazing and truly is important to my life. I was 9yo and it was the first time that I ever noticed typography, I remember for years looking at and drawing isolated sections of individual characters in words.
(I love Watermelons. He/she makes me giggle every time – and I’m not trying to be rude)

I think one of the best trailers I’ve ever seen was the trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which tells the whole story in two minutes in a more powerful and moving and wordless way than the movie itself. (Which I did like). Normally when a trailer tells a whole story it ruins things, but here it was like a short film in and of itself.

There was a trailer for Battle: Los Angeles which made me very excited to see it. Then it ended, and I stopped being excited.
An excellent trailer, though that film had some awful trailers too, but you’ll know it when you see it.
I feel ashamed of myself even making this post, but it deserves a mention, because the film was so shockingly bad.

Most of the ones I can think of have already been listed above; the Alien trailer is truly remarkable – the way it’s stayed fresh in my mind all these years is a testament to just how good it really is.
I thought the trailer for Tinker, Tailor was superb; and another trailer from this year that I would consider pretty good is Crazy Stupid Love’s, no joke. Sure, it follows a set formula in its structure, but somehow it does so with more panache and allure than other romcoms. And it knows what it’s got going for it – namely, that terrific cast.

Bobb i really like ur choices, I was waiting for someone to mention the Watchmen trailer. The first teaser is def my favorite. Dark Knight and Inception were amazing too. Tree of Life was the best one i’ve seen most recently. It’s a sham the Watchmen trailer was better than the actual movie.

I thought Gangs of New York was a brilliant trailer. Never a masterpiece as a film (althought a very good one).

Definitely thought that the trailer for A Single Man was masterful. Quite fond of the ones for Postcards from the Edge and Little Children, as well. The ones for Revolutionary Road (the 2 minute full trailer with Nina Simone as well as the 1 minute spot with Cat Power’s Sea of Love Cover) gave me chills. In hindsight, the trailer for There Will Be Blood, though I love the movie, is good, but the movie is too brilliant for its trailer to even hold a candle to it. The trailers for The Departed, Blue Valentine, Inglorious Basterds, A Serious Man, and The Social Network all perfectly edited.

Precious (A “what the fuck is this cast” excitement, and the ferocious looking Monique)

I’ve always loved that trailer for “The Exorcist” that was apparently so frightening back in 1973 that they had to pull it from theaters. Or I think that’s how the story goes.

Mark shut the fuck up. At the least it will get visual effects as well as sound mixing and soung editing nominations. And if it manages to be a year of ten, following previous years of 5×2 where sci-fi has been big at the oscars, it could certainly get in.

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the trailer of Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yaXPx6xWEQ
Angela Bassett’s punch leading into the sounds of Skunk Anasie’s Selling Jesus is magic to me. The original teaser trailer was a complete mess (though I still loved it), but the long form trailer was awesome. I don’t ever remember seeing it in theatres so maybe that’s one reason the film tanked so bad. The marketing of it was atrocious.

Not sure if I can name many more great trailers considering the titles mentioned in the above comments. The Super 8 trailer I found to be pretty effective. Although I wish they could have teased a little more with the monster. Just a hand, foot, any one of it’s 8, 12, 14, or however many goddamn legs it had, would not have been a bad thing.
Speaking of Super 8, it crossed the $100 million mark yesterday which could obviously give a little boost in the oscar race as the dead presidents continue to come in. Oh, and Bridesmaids also surpassed Knocked Up as Judd Apatow’s biggest comedy. Though that was sort of given.

This trailer for THE TWO TOWERS springs to mind immediately. The souped-up orchestral version of the REQUIEM FOR A DREAM score would later become a trailer cliche, but here it was thrilling and perfect. I think I watched this trailer dozens of times in the lead-up to December 2002.

Yes, that “Alien” trailer is just magnificent. It doesn’t show much, but it shows enough.
Other great trailers I’d like to give a shout-out to are the teaser to “Where the Wild Things Are”

as well as the simple but haunting trailer for “McCabe and Mrs. Miller”

Where the Wild Things Are, A Single Man, A Serious Man, and the teaser for Eternal Sunshine come to mind.

The trailer for “Sleeper” is just as funny as the film.
You must watch it:

I don’t really have an “all time” favorite trailer list… I tend to go year-by-year. Some of my favorites of recent years (besides those already mentioned)
Frost/Nixon

A Serious Man

– The Minus Man: a thriller with Owen Wilson and Jeanne Garofalo, with him playing a serial killer who looks just like a regular guy. Actually, there is no scenes of “Minus”, just a couple discussing the film after they saw it.
The lady is portraited by Marin Hinkle (Judy from “Two and a Half Men”). Then suddenly, she asks for the hours, discover it’s too late, and leaves in a hurry like she is running the 100 metres female race on the OLympics. The twist, the reason she is doing it, it’s brilliant.
– The Godfather Part III, in which the scenes of first two serve as an introduction for the trailer itself from the third, in a way that I never saw before or since.
– Femme Fatale: in this version (there is another, normal) the whole movie is shown in high speed, with some scenes and frames, normally, to make us curious. Then as the credits roll (in a even higher speed), it appears written on the frame, “Your just watched Brian De Palma’s New Film”, then “You didn’t get it?”, then “Try Again”. Very cool.

Best of last year was probably Blue Valentine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYgr_iGATB4)
Best of all time is a tie between The Shining (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qDqdYY6-Y) and Little Children (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiJLJd7cH1c)
Both of them perfectly capture the atmospheres that encompass the films.
