@richardM:
I’ve read the screenplay. And I hate using the term “Osary”, but it was the only real word I could think of.

I cannot wait for this movie! I know Eastwood is not as consistent as say Scorsese, but this past decade has seen him really soar as a director. For every Hereafter and Gran Torino, he has made a Mystic River and Letters From Iwo Jima. I am hoping J. Edgar is as good as the latter two films I mentioned.
I know it is dangerous to call any film or any actor a front runner this early in the race, but Leo Dicaprio’s chances are looking very good. Plus, the hottness of him kissing Armie Hammer will be amazing.

Have you seen the film to pre-judge or bias your so-called “Oscary” moments?
@Paddy M
Added: The Painted Veil where she was fantastic with “Oscary” moments through-out.

I think Watts actually has a decent chance at a nomination for this. She’s been robbed of a nomination so many times – Mulholland Dr., King Kong, and last year when she had two great performances – Mother and Child and Fair Game. She’s only been nominated once which, for an actress of her stature, is disgraceful. And she will no doubt be very good in the role.

Di Caprio looks like “acting” and that is what he is always doing: acting … and you can see it. So “overrated” as great actor (because great actors never looks like acting) and surely not the frontrunner for best actor … for me, but: you know the academy 🙂

@Gentle Benji
Naomi’s playing Helen Gandy, Hoover’s lifelong secretary and only confidant aside from Clyde Tolson. She is the one who handled Hoover’s various secret files and was also responsible for destroying them after his death.
Her role is fairly large, but there aren’t any real “Oscary” moments in it. I’m sure Naomi’ll be able to bring a lot to it, however. I wouldn’t put it past her to get an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, but I think Judi Dench has a better shot, personally.

To clarify: I know who she’s playing, just not what kind of role it will be in the film.

Naomi Watts has never looked dowdier. Has anyone here read the J. EDGAR script? What do we know about the meatiness of her role?
