The Weinstein Co. is up front and center with My Week with Marilyn which has just been announced as the centerpiece gala selection for the 2011 New York Film Fest (September 30 – October 16), screening at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday, October 9.
From the press release:
“After seeing Marilyn Monroe so often portrayed in films as a caricature, it is a pleasure to see this complex personality and unique on-screen presence portrayed so well by such a talented actress as Michelle Williams,” says Richard Peña, Selection Committee Chair & Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Based on Colin Clark’s diaries, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, is set in the early summer of 1956, when a 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL. It was the film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott).
Nearly 40 years on, Clark’s diary account The Prince, the Showgirl and Me was published, but one week was missing – which was published some years later as My Week with Marilyn. This is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Clark to introduce Monroe to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe who was desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.
Produced by David Parfitt, the Weinstein Company release also stars Dominic Cooper, Judi Dench, Julia Ormond, Zoe Wanamaker, Emma Watson, Toby Jones, Philip Jackson, Geraldine Somerville, Derek Jacobi and Simon Russell Beale. The film is set for a November 4 release.
I was about to say “hold on Glenn Close, MW may give you a run for your money.” But after reading these comments, it seems like such a terrific year for women in leading roles that the “campaigns” behind the performances, right or wrong, may play an even more pivotal role this particular year in determining the nominees.

Agree Chen, but again I personally think Close is different then Bening (while both great actresses). If there is actually someone who I think you can compare to Glenn Close in terms of how I think the Oscar voters will view her, it is Jeff Bridges. I think this is one of those rare cases for an actress where even if the performance is very good (which the buzz around it seems to be that it is excellent) then I can see her easily winning. While Bening has always been highly regarded and respected – and I for one would love to see her win one day – I would still say that Close is more beloved and respected throughout the industry. Of course this is all subjective and I have no basis for this, but just my gut intuition. I think the only thing that could stop Close from winning (other then the film being terrible) was if another beloved, veteran actress who has yet to be recognized came out with a great lead performance in a film. The only two actresses that I can think of that fit that bill would be Sigourney Weaver or maybe Michelle Pfeiffer.

“And she may not have another shot. Michelle has a great career ahead of her. And goddess Meryl will definitely be back another year, and another year after that…”
That’s what they also says about A Benning VS N Portmann. Overdue or not doesn’t mean anything. The performance that the got most buzzzzzy wins. Simple as that…The bottom line, If they loved Close, they’ll give it to her.

Oh wait, you got her. Still, she should be in top 5.

BENJ YOU’VE FORGOTTEN ONE OF THE BIGGEST – ELIZABETH OLSEN, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE. She’ll easily knock out Swinton.
This is my most anticipated.

It is shaping up to be a great year for female performances! But it has to go to Glenn Close! She was so robbed when she lost the Oscar for Dangerous Liasons, that performance still amazes me. And she may not have another shot. Michelle has a great career ahead of her. And goddess Meryl will definitely be back another year, and another year after that…

I really think Kristen Wiig is going surprise everyone at year’s end. I think she’s nearly assured a nomination for BRIDESMAIDS. Maybe a double nom for screenplay, too.

D, I read on their website they will announce it around mid-august.
I always have faith in Michelle Williams. If we look at the Best Actress winning history based on the age, she’s the perfect match, 30 something.

Oops! Of course, Rooney Mara is in a major studio film. Sony’s TGWTDT. And “W.E.” is Harvey’s too!
Oh, those Harvey Girls! They do endure. And prosper, come awards time….ALWAYS Bet on Harvey.

When will the full line-up be announced does anybody know?

Since this topic has, understandably, aroused discussion about Best Actress, here’s the way I see that category at this point:
The frontrunners:
Glenn Close in ALBERT NOBBS
Rooney Mara in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Meryl Streep in THE IRON LADY
Tilda Swinton in WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
Michelle Williams in MY WEEK WITH MARILYN
Waiting in the wings:
Kirsten Dunst in MELANCHOLIA
Jodie Foster in CARNAGE
Felicity Jones in LIKE CRAZY
Charlize Theron in YOUNG ADULT
Kate Winslet in CARNAGE (or will one of that film’s actresses be Supporting?)
Dark horses:
Elizabeth Olsen in MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE
Andrea Riseborough in W.E
Mia Wasikowska in JANE EYRE (or RESTLESS)
Rachel Weisz in THE DEEP BLUE SEA (or DREAM HOUSE)
Kristen Wiig in BRIDESMAIDS
What have I forgotten?

I love Michelle, and she certainly is rockin’ Marilyn in these pictures! I think holding it back til NYFFis Harvey W.’s decision. She sure could have a shot based on these stills.
Harvey seems to be RUNNING the Best Actress category, yet again. And who better? But the NYFF is not chopped Oscar liver by any means these days. That’s where TSN debuted, lest we forget.
But this COULD be Michelle’s year. She’s been nominated twice now. And this certainly seems nomination-worthy. And the Academy likes her, they really like her.
And I don’t see a lot of really strong contenders in this category coming from studios…It’s all Indie gals, and yes, TWC is NOT a major these days. A major Oscar player, sure, but…I see nothing from The Majors, as they are called, for women.
They are all Indie flicks, “Melancholia” “We’ve Got to Talk About Kevin” “Albert Nobbs” all have micro-mini distributors which means, it’s all about the Harvey Girls this year, looks like. Meryl, Michelle…
And I hear Amanda Risborough is excellent in “W.E.” and that the film is “beautiful.”
Fingers crossed for all of the above…

The test screening was based on a few people. Probably the same group of bodies that bash the casting williams in the first place. Jury is still out on her performance far as I feel, I am waiting on the official critics
Best Actress of 2012. MW.

It all depends on how good Glenn Close is in Albert Nobbs. I have always maintained that if it is a great performance, nobody – including Queen Meryl – will have a chance. If people thought Annette Bening overdue for an Oscar, then times that by 100 when discussing Glenn Close, an actress who has not only been around longer but is also more beloved and respected both in the industry and by the public.

I heard it was Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain and Sissy Spacek gave the most noteworthy performances in “The Help”??? Though it was a great ensemble performance though..
From this film’s test screenings, that “My Week with Marilyn” was too light for the Academy? That Kenneth Branagh is its closest shot for an acting win…. Don’t get too carried away people, I don’t know if being left out in Venice and Toronto is a big deal but yeah, it does make sense… Still looking forward to see this….

I have said it at the moment when i heard that Michelle Williams will play Marylin Monroe! She will win for sure the Oscar! I mean if actresses like Sandra Bullock or Gwyneth Paltrow can beat Meryl Streep in an Oscar race than an actress like Michelle Williams can beat her of course! Right now i would say that the Lead Actress category will be a fight between Michelle Williams (My Week with Marylin) and Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs)! I have my doubts if the academy will give Oscar no. 3 to Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) or Jodi Foster (Carnage) or no. 2. to Kate Winslet (Carnage), Charlize Theron (Young Adult), Tilda Swinton (We need to talk about Kevin) or no. 1 to Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) or Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) or Olivia Colman (Tyrannosaur)! If there will be – and there will be – a first time winner it will be Michelle or Glenn!

AND OSCAR GOES TO… La Belle Michelle

I agree. She will likely become the frontrunner. Or at least part of a two, or three, horse race with Streep and Close.

How big is this Film Fest? My week with Marilyn was left off the big list of Venice and Toronto. Does that mean anything?

Is it me or what? Williams/Marilyn picture is scary. I don’t like that facial expression.
And Finally there’s some positive news about Williams, better than the last time around, where people hate it so much.
Jorge, I am wary of her winning though….Dunst ala Portmann? not too soon. The one who will surprise is Emma Stone (The Help).

Whatever happened to Andrew Dominik’s proposed Marilyn Monroe project, Blonde? I’ve always thought Michelle would be a better match for Monroe physically, but Naomi Watts would be a better match for Monroe emotionally.
