Swiped this Guy Lodge at In Contention – he says that he was certain The Artist would be a major player at this year’s Oscars after he saw it at Cannes — well, a lot of people did, including Dave Karger and Yours Truly. It’s a no-brainer. Not only is the film winning on every possible level but it’s being backed by the Weinstein Co. which makes it unstoppable. This is a movie that will not only draw crowds, make bank and get people talking, but it will also charm the pants right off those AMPAS peeps.
@Gentle Benj
I am starting to doubt if it will be eligable for Best Original Score…. because it’s kind of unclear to me if they composed a new score for the film…. or if they borrowed the music from other silent films….

Hell, Film Editing, too. From the looks of the international trailer, they have done a fantastic job mimicking the rhythm of silent-era film cuts.

It’s playing at the New York Film Festival, correct?

If this is TWC’s varsity starter, eight nominations should be within reach:
Best Picture
Best Actor
Best Directing
Best Original Screenplay
Best Art Direction
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
Best Original Score
Maybe Makeup too, I dunno.

I was fortunate enough to see this last weekend at the Festival des Films du Monde de Montréal, where it had its North American première. It’s quite well done.
I can see it getting a Best Picture nomination; I also think that Jean Dujardin deserves a Best Actor nomination…and I’d also say it deserves a Best Original Score nomination.

I agree with this article. Saw the film on Moscow Film Festival – it’s amazing (alongside with Melancholia the best movie of the year so far) and it will be nominated for sure 4 the BP, also for art-decor, music and probably actor. It’s a kind of a movie that is so different to others. every second of it is a pure magic.

I think Gosling is going to be nominated at the end as well with Dujardin. But for what? From all that I’ve been hearing these two are sure things along with Oldman. I wonder who the other two actors will be…

This is a wonderful poster, and I think it will get nominations, but 4 tops.
As we know, The Artist is from France, but excluded from Foreign Language Film (being in English/silent). Le Havre being IN French, but a Finnish submission – If anyone is interested in the trailer (with English subtitles), here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiCmbiyE99c

I watched both oss117 films last week. They aren’t very funny but DuJardin is crazy charming (but for the real hotness: “Pomme D’amour” Damn.
I’m still thinking people are going to go batsh*t over this one. Amelie-style. I’ve been way wrong many times before. Valhalla Rising was not the feel good film of the year. I kid.

I love this poster, it’s so classy and the movie seems so cool. I love silent films, too. So, I’m eager to watch The Artist.

Hopefully not another undeserving Weinstein film that takes over the Oscars. I can see this film already getting a nomination for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay though. I will have to see the film myself to see if it holds up. I must say, I can only say that the only good stuff Weinstein has ever produced that I have seen are Tarantino and Kevin Smith movies. Everything else he’s produced I never really seemed to like compared to what his films were up against those years. yes I’m still pissed about The King’s Speech. Should’ve just been an HBO drama and NOTHING ELSE.

Sam Raimi didnt direct either of those movies. I think you meant Sam Mendes

@The ghost of easter, I’m not referring to being overdue when it comes to awards, but more specifically to nominations. I know he is still young, but his performances in both Revolutionary Road and Shutter Island shouldn’t have been overlooked the way they were (specially in Raimi’s film).
Anyway, I’m not complaining, coz I would love to see Oldman winning the award.

In what universe is DiCaprio overdue? I mean… he’s only 37 and even if he doesn’t win…. he’ll still have a long and promising career in front of him in which he’ll have many more chances…

Again, being overdue is one of the keys to win an Oscar
More than half of the acting winners from the last ten years were first-time-nominees, so I’m not sure that’s statistically true.

With DiCaprio and Oldman in two of the most anticipated films of the Oscars race, I think Dujardin should be more than happy if gets nominated. Again, being overdue is one of the keys to win an Oscar, and we all know DiCaprio has been consistently fighting to win one (and playing great roles in a large amount of movies). I don’t need to say anything about Mr. Oldman. It’s his big chance to get recognized by the Academy.

This is crazy. Jean Dujardin as a best actor contender for the Oscars! I remember seeing him as a candidate on French reality TV, sort of like Star Search, in the comedian category. He’s really come a long way.
Can’t wait for this to come out, it looks so good!

I think “The Artist” has Best Original Screenplay in the bag.

Any chance that Dujardin will win?
I mean… because he’s been building buzz ever since he won the “Best Actor”-trophy at Cannes… just like a surden (then) unknown Austrian actor did a couple of years ago…
And both of them have/had Harvey Weinstein behind them…

Perfect poster. I wasn’t sure why the recent Gurus poll included Dujardin among the choices for “surprise Best Actor nominee.” He’s a top-tier competitor from this vantage.

Since reading about it’s Cannes reception, I’ve been thinking this has real BP nom chances. Can’t wait to see it.

Leo’s biggest competition if you ask me. And if he loses to this guy, I would put him together with Bening and Moore as those people who are just not meant for Oscar glory quite yet.
