From Celebuzz via ScreenRant. If you need a reminder that Tim Burton is directing, this shot should sear it into your memory. But don’t be alarmed. Our friend Anthony Breznican says tonight on Twitter:
I’ve seen Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows, and those paparazzi shots don’t look much like what we’ll see onscreen. – @Breznican
(Clip of Jonathan Frid as the original Barnabas, c. 1969, after the cut.)
Antoinette, you are right about the exaggerated cheekbone lines in each version of Barnabas Collins. In the original series, whenever Barnabas was in vampire mode, they used lots of pale makeup on him with shadowing around his features, including eyeliner to make him look sinister. When Barnabas is temporarily cured by Dr. Lang, in subsequent episodes, he has a more natural look: no eyeliner, moderate makeup, and a longer softer look to his hair and bangs. The same is true during the Roxanne Drew segment of 1970: he looks like a normal man. When he is again cursed, as in the Leviathan segment, the pale, shadowy makeup returns and…he even has a streak of white at each temple, ala “Sweeney Todd”, to signify trauma. Based on all of this, I feel that what we are seeing with Mr. Depp is just preliminary to what will actually be done with cinematographic processes, ie., filtering and lighting. I am certain that it will be a more stylized look, makeup and hair wise, than what we remember about the original and the revival Barnabas. The original Barnabas, and Ben Cross’ version, both were seen in the sun on walks about the estate in the “House of Dark Shadows” film of 1970 and in the 1991 television revival. Each actor portraying Barnabas had a natural, normal look in those daylight shots. Mr. Frid’s Barnabas is even seen outside on the hospital balcony with Victoria, after he is cured, sans heavy makeup, and he looks quite handsome.

As first I thought this was really bad. But then I realized that hat probably isn’t Barnabas’. It’s probably Johnny’s. He never seems to leave home without one. So maybe he just wore it wherever they were walking and it’s not actually part of the costume.
Without the hat, you can see that it might actually look like the make up from the old show. That drawn on cheekbone line is pretty much the same.
I think the hat’s what is throwing everything off and it might be a red herring.

Well, they both need to pay for their new yachts, so fair enough. Actually, it’s guaranteed to be better than Alice in Wonderland, which as far as I’m concerned is one of the worst films ever made in the history of Hollywood.

Then again Depp’s make up in this photo seems almost reminiscent of his awful turns in Alice and Charlie….so I guess we’ll see.

Burton has such an original mind, I wish he would start doing less adaptations and focus more on original stories….Other than Sweeney Todd and Big Fish (two of his best), a lot of his most creative moments have been directing original works like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Corpse Bride. It seems that his adaptations often fall short, especially lately (Alice and Charlie….bleh….and who could forget Planet Of The Apes).
Having said that, I am still looking forward to Dark Shadows. When working at the height of their abilities Burton, Depp, Carter, et al are capable of creating works of genius (I still think Sweeney Todd deserved a best picture nomination and that it was without a doubt among the top 5 films in a stellar year for movies, though I’m aware I may be part of a minority who believes this).
