I don’t think MW for Best Actress this year with My week with Marilyn. Her eyes at end of clips not passion, power and sexy. It’s so boring and not moving at all.
May be she’ll get a nomination but not win!

cgc: indeed! Meryl seems “awkward, hammy and gimmicky”. And one dares to add: as per usual…

@GlennUK – I totally agree with you on Streep (and Williams, too). HOWEVER, you’re giving the Oscars way too much credit. This is Meryl we’re talking about! The only way she wouldn’t get nominated is if it was a coaster of Mamma Mia proportions… which is practically impossible judging from (a) the footage we’ve seen from the trailer and winter movie season clip reel — yes, she seems awkward, hammy and gimmicky but isn’t that right in their wheelhouse? — & (b) the fact that she’s playing a *real person*. AMPAS eats that shit up.

“She created some moments that were so intimately familiar to me because I spent 14 weeks with Marilyn… I know that Michelle studied everything — read every book she could find — about Marilyn… and the amazing thing is that there is not one thing in that film that is not truthful… it was just a revelation… she holds the mirror up to nature and she gets into acting that is beyond acting, that is being… Michelle’s performance made me appreciate Marilyn.” – Don Murray (who was Marilyn’s partner in Bus Stop)

I think this looks absolutely stunning, as does Michelle Williams. It just feels classy! I love the idea about it being the actor’s interpretation and not some cheesy mimicking which I’m afraid is looking like with the Thatcher/Streep project. I caught a very brief clip of Streep doing Thatcher again at the cinema this week and it did not look good at all to me – she turns to the camera and says something along the lines of “gentleman, shall we join the ladies (or women)” – I did not like it at all. I’m going out on a limb and saying I doubt Streep will get nommed this year.

@ Tory, exactly.
When an actor takes on the challenge of portraying a person, it shouldn’t be a replica of that person. It should be the person filtered through the actor’s imagination…because THEN they can reveal a deep truth about the character that we could have only got from that actor (it’s unique, because no imagination is alike) and not something that we could have simply got by reading the books and watching videos of the person.

Mira Sorvino didn’t win an Emmy. She and Ashley Judd got a noms. Helen Mirren won that year for Prime Suspect.

It’s also interesting to note that when Mira Sorvino plays Marilyn in the TV movie of her life a few years back…She won an Emmy…As Sasha says, one of her favorite phrases, and mine…”just saying”…

Beautiful.
Beautiful.
I’m so angry at this site now.
They didn’t post anything about John Williams – Tintin or War Horse – BOTH are on YouTube.
I will listen to these soundtracks for the next couple weeks – I’ll be back, though.

I remember her saying last year during the Oscar roundtable interviews (with James Franco, Anette Benning, Natalie Portman, etc..) that she was struggling with the vocal aspect. And she said “forget it, I’m just going to sing the damn thing.” And there is a huge part of me that was saying “uh-oh” why do that? When you play such iconic characters with such a distinctive voice, it would be a terrifying thing to try and mimic that. You know Angela Bassett lip sang Tina and so did Foxx with Ray (even though he actually can sound like him). And it works. And it’s totally fine. But there is an actor’s process, and the process of a whole, and what that means to a production. I know that Anne Hathaway is singing Judy’s songs in her own voice. And though Hathaway sings beautifully, that would be something soooooo scary. But I get it. And I got why Williams wanted to personally sing the part. It’s a version of Marilyn you know? It’s an interpretation of that person. I don’t know…. Something to think about.
Anyway I’m SUPER excited for this film :-)!!!

“MW, MM”
Some people think that MAYBE a certain KW (RR, ESotSM) should have taken on the challenge of this role, but I’m a pretty big fan of MW (W&L, BM) so I will see this film.

It’s a nice clip they’ve chosen, but I’m not sure it’s indicative of either the films quality or Michelle William’s performance. Both of which were quite good.
But I guess that’s the point of teaser trailers? :/
