Ziyad Abul Hawa has done another spectacular job crunching the numbers to rank the year’s top movies up through the final weeks of summer.
Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

@OCO yeah and if the Academy doesn’t like it, they can take their Oscar and stick it, shove it, and…..SUCK IT!!! right straight up their academic critical asses.
To think after all the hard work it did for the past 10 years, Harry Potter’s last film was snubbed out the Oscar Best Picture nominations. I mean it did an excellent/tremendous job in the box office and breaking records…like always, and it got alot of positive movie reviews but what did it get in return from The Academy(besides some BP awards in award ceremonies that lets the PUBLIC vote and attend, also a few Visual Awards)…….NOTHING. I mean everyone, including critics knows its the highest grossing film and one of the best reviewed films of the 2011, it had almost better grades/arguably more votes and reviews than film (2011) on RottenTomatoes, IMDB, Metacritic, and BFCA (which shouldn’t have snubbed it from the BP nominations, I mean I could seee Drive but Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close?), and it was respected by not only the public but critics and inspired a young geneation (kids/teens/young adults) like The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, Lord of the Rings, Toy Story 3, Indiana Jones, Babe (pig not hot girl), and another that had young actors and it was about a kid and an alien…..oh yeah that would be E.T.
Also yeah it’s too late but don’t blame Harry Potter’s last film that a few films that got BP nods did kinda bad in the domestic or overall box office (like Tree of Life) and that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (did it got nominated for Oscar Best Picture cause it was based on 9/11?) took their spot.
Hey! This post couldn’t be written any better! Reading through this post reminds me of my previous room mate! He always kept chatting about this. I will forward this article to him. Fairly certain he will have a good read. Thanks for sharing!
You know what i don’t see why HP’s final film wasn’t nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars?
“I’m making mine now: 0. And a maximum of 5 mentions on any given US Critics Lists.”
You were wrong.
@Ryan Adams you should show this chart to the Academy
I mean wasn’t
Man, no wonder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was nominated for Best Picture at all those state critic awards.
But were they nominated for an Oscar?
Are you asking from me? OK. There are quite a few that were not nominated for Best Picture, but for many other categories.
The Lion King, The Dark Knight, Jurassic Park – for example. These were the highest grossing pictures of the year and also critical darlings.
@ Tero how many films do you know (that were the highest grossing film of the year, got one of the highest grades of the year on BFCA, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Yahoo Movies) that weren’t nominated for Best picture or any Oscar?
“If Deathly Hallows Part 2 somehow ends up with a BP nod, it’ll be to reward the series as a whole. On its own, Deathly Hallows Part 2 is probably one of the weakest of the Harry Potter films, if not the weakest, IMO.”
Zack or Preppy, tell that to Richard Roeper, ROger Ebert, Christy Lemire, Mark Kermode, First Stop News, Elisa Roche, Richard Godwin, and Philip Womack; and to me they would say YOU’RE WRONG!!!!
I know this is an old post, but Jeremie, you disgust me. Talk about ignorance.
While not my #1 movie of the year, Harry Potter 7.2 is definitely near the top of my list. I’ve seen 23 movies released in 2011, and I honestly believe HP7.2 is in the top 5.
I think what puts me over the edge is the fact that seeing HP7.2 in the theater opening night was one of, if not THE most profound movie-going experience I have ever had. The full experience- wrapping up a decade of books and films, being in the theater humming with excitement waiting for the shot to begin- and then the movie itself, so controlled, so epic.. It’s impossible to discount the -experience- of Harry Potter, an entity separate from the film. Like any art, the content of the piece is what matters most, but also important is what the piece does to you.

And a BAFTA Best Picture win.

Interesting point there, Antoinette. One other way for a Potter BP entrance: J.K. Rowling herself. Making the rounds, attending exclusive dinner parties where AMPAS members are sure to attend and being the charming, celebrated, mufti-billionaire author that she is.

Alright, I’m going to actually take HP seriously for a minute based on this list.
What I find interesting is that although it comes in first, it’s highest mark is from the Broadcast Film Critics and it’s lowest is from the IMDb. That’s kinda the opposite of what we would think it to be. You would assume the biggest champion of this series would be the fans. As far as the people are concerned, it’s tied with Moneyball and Warrior, and trailing Drive. Again, very unexpected.
What does this tell us about the Academy though? Not much. They don’t agree with critics or people. But you know who does agree with the people? SAG. Because they are people. So here is Harry Potter’s way in. The SAG ensemble award. Every year I bemoan the fact that our friendly actors don’t actually treat the best ensemble award as an ensemble award. They treat it as their best picture. But imagine if THAT ENSEMBLE was in the running. Could they lose? Even to a much better, but less populated, ensemble. (My hope for that award so far is Warrior, but maybe TTSS when I see it.) But would SAG be able to resist giving our Hogwarts pals their cumulative reward for growing up in front of our eyes? I don’t know. Maybe not. Moneyball, Drive and Warrior although ensemble-y really only have a few in each cast who deserve it. How many would be listed in HP’s cast? They’d have to sit some of them in the parking lot.
Picture it. All our friends, Hagrid, the Weasleys, Snape, Voldemort, Neville, Hermione, Ron, and Harry standing on stage, but in the place of wands, they have bronze actors. How could that NOT happen? Methinks, this should be the strategy. If you want it for them, you’ll have to start visualizing now. Get to work.

Scott, that is an opinion. To me, something like A Separation matters more than Harry Potter. To you, it’s the opposite way. At least I have seen HP8, but you will never see A Separation. It’s not cool to be limited… to have narrow views on movies ON movie sites.
In fact, with your short temper and ignorance, you are giving Americans a bad name (assuming you are from the States, spelling “favourite” as “favorite”).
Calling HP8 a “wide release” was ok, but calling foreign films (aka subtitled ones, right?) something that don’t matter was just stupid. You don’t know what you’re missing…
