Scene stealer Corey Stoll currently put forth as the best chance for any of the marvelous actors in Midnight in Paris to get recognition. I rather liked Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein — but, like Stoll, her role is fairly small for Oscar.
Actor Corey Stoll, recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor by the Independent Spirit Awards for his portrayal of Ernest Hemingway in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris will participate in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum’s forum “Hemingway’s Letters: From Childhood to Paris” on December 11, 2011. The afternoon will consist of a discussion of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway: Volume 1, 1907-1922 with Sandra Spanier, the book’s editor, and novelist Ward Just. Scott Simon, host of NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday, will moderate, and Stoll will read selections. The Kennedy Library is the major repository of Ernest Hemingway’s papers. A screening of Sony Pictures Classics’ Midnight in Paris will be shown following the forum.
Mr. Stoll did a fine job, but give credit to his material, first EH, then selected by Woody Allen.
Someone once said of Robert Redford (early in his career, I hope) that one could go down to Malibu and throw a stick and have at least 10 chances of hitting someone just like him. That is, can’t you imagine any number of actors in New York (they’re working every night on off-off-Broadway stages) or LA who could have handled that part.
… and if anyone complains on my mention of Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull, just let me remind everyone Al Pacino got a nom for Dick Tracy in one of the most over-the-top performances ever rewarded with an Oscar nom 😉
he was really good in a showy role… that being said, for supporting performance of the year, I still think that Alan Rickman & Ralph Fiennes (HP), John Goodman (Red State), Tom Hiddleston (Thor), John Lightgow (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Matt Damon (Contagion), Hugo Weaving & Stanley Tucci (Captain America) and Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), where all on par with his performance or even better (Rickman, Lightgow, Fassbender and Hiddleston specially) but their problem being, the main problem being, genre bias.
So, it would be nice to see him nom’d, but to me it would be some kind of travesty, leaving out equal or superior work in fantastic & blockbusters.
He’s currently my #1 fave Supporting Actor performance of the year. Really hope he gets nominated.
Imagine: Ernest Hemingway, Margaret Thatcher, Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier and…Billy Beane all represented on Oscar night!
I was thinking, where have I seen that face before? Law and Order LA!
Well I love the film and he was one of the reasons why… so I’m all for this possibly futile campaign for awards recognition!
In a weak year I’d say he’d have a good chance to secure a nomination, but I don’t think that will happen. I’m holding out hope for Armie Hammer and Kenneth Branagh.
I want him to get all the awards. My favorite supporting male performance of the year.
I loved Stoll in the film. Not award-worthy, but a nomination would be more than welcome.
Agree…Stoll was hilarious in Midnight in Paris
I’m glad they are FINALLY getting Corey Stoll out there and all over the place as you HAVE to be when seeking an Oscar nomination! RAISE COREY STOLL AWARENESS! NOW!
