Had Lincoln lived another 8 years, it’s conceivable he could have worn jeans.
Levi’s brand of denim jeans was founded in 1853 when Levi Strauss came from Buttenheim, Franconia, (Kingdom of Bavaria) to San Francisco, California to open a west coast branch of his brothers’ New York dry goods business. In 1873 Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis received a U.S. Patent to make the first riveted men’s work pants out of denim: the first blue jeans.
Though the sneakers are a jolting anachronism.

Oscah #3.
I can already listen studio execs trying to move possible Oscar-winning/heavy weights/male lead turns to another year.
Specially if they explore his “sleeping with men” side. But…

DDL looks the part definitely. And the man can ask like few others can IMO. I don’t believe he would mimick either, it’s just not what he seems to do with roles.
@steve50 – just want to say that I like your comments, not just this one, but from ‘marinating your head…’ to…whatever. I like the cut of your jib!

Proclaiming he’ll win is a bit much, but you can bet the farm on at least a nomination.

Now show us Sally Field as Mary Todd. I gotta bet that resemblance is just as amazing as DDL’s is. This has promise stamped all over it let’s hope it delivers. I think that the critics will go after Spielburg regardless and it’ll be interesting to see how he approaches his subject. I don’t see how Lewis could possibly screw this up because he’s a natural choice for this role. Could be the best Lincoln we’ve ever seen. And if Spielburg can restrain Fields’ ability at hystrionics she could match Lewis scene for scene.

Wow. And DDL is a fricking genius. You just know he’s going to be amazing in this.

Sorry for misspelling Spielberg’s name in my previous comment @ 5:47. I feel pretty damn foolish about that one.

It can’t really be “mimicking” since there isn’t any video or even audio (I don’t think?) of Lincoln to mimic.

Proclaiming that someone is going to be nominated, yet alone WIN, an Oscar based solely on an off-set picture is a little out of hand. I love Daniel Day-Lewis as much as the next guy or gal, but we all know how the game works, his performance alone won’t be responsible for him winning his third statuette.
If Spielberg isn’t able to pull off Lincoln and make it an absolutely masterful film, then Daniel’s chances of even a nomination are slim-to-none. This is an all-or-nothing type project in my opinion, and if it isn’t executed correctly it’s going to have a hard time getting any recognition, even with good acting performances behind it.
The other thing to keep in mind is that Daniel’s chances for another win are actually diminished by the fact that this would be his 3rd Best Actor Oscar. It would be an unprecedented win, and the Academy will be well aware of this. All it will take is 2 or 3 other great leading male performances next year for Daniel’s odds of winning to be nearly impossible. Again, we all know how this game works, folks!
Let’s all take a breath, calm down, and wait until later next year to be putting “Daniel Day-Lewis” and “Best Actor Oscar of 2012” in the same sentence.

Isn’t it funny how people accuse Meryl Streep of mimicry every time she tackles a public figure in cinema. With the male actors, the news is greeted with jubilation. This sexist attitude in film needs to be addressed. It is a serious issue.

@steve50 lmao
In that normal setting with the jeans, etc., he just looks like a dude that goes to all-night readings of Moby Dick. (They have those here.)

Brilliant actor. Although he was the very reason why Nine was a disaster. Nobody’s perfect.

“After all, it’s Daniel Day-Lewis playing Abraham Lincoln. It might as well be Meryl Streep playing Jesus Christ.”
HA!
I would rather see Meryl as Jesus Christ than Margaret Thatcher, to be honest…

Word around town is that DANIEL DAY-LEWIS hasn’t broken his Lincoln accent since March. His real name doesn’t even appear on the call sheet. @TheInSneider
This would be the first Oscar win for acting in a Spielberg film and DDL would become the first person to win 3 Best Actor Oscars. He would also tie Jack Nicholson (2 Best Actor, 1 Supporting Actor) and Walter Brennan (3 Supporting Actor) in overall male acting wins.

It does not matter one little bit how good or bad this film is; he can’t not be nominated for this. I imagine many Academy members might even put him on this year’s ballots if they catch sight of this shot alone. After all, it’s Daniel Day-Lewis playing Abraham Lincoln. It might as well be Meryl Streep playing Jesus Christ.
Do I sound snarky? I hope not – I can’t wait to see DDL pull this off!
