Happy Thanksgiving and Giving Thanks

It is always this time of year when it occurs to me how many people there are in the world who make my life better, make the world better, and extend themselves beyond their daily routine to do something nice for someone else, or to stand up for something they believe in.  Mostly I just feel lucky to be able to do what I do.

Thanksgiving is a holiday not to prepare for Black Friday, or to eat so much we have to then diet for the entire year afterwards,  but a moment to step back and say thank you, as sappy as it is to do so, and as uncomfortable as it might be.  So in giving thanks today I’d like to give back to you readers with a Thanksgiving giveaway.  You can be in America or not. This is our way of thanking you for being such loyal readers over the years.  We may be sometimes slow to send our prizes (send us an email if we forget) but these will be available in time to give as Christmas presents, sell on Ebay or else enjoy for yourself.

There will be three winners.  Each will have a choice of the following – The Lord of the Rings trilogy, extended edition.  The Harry Potter Complete full set, and the Star Wars Complete Saga. On Blu-ray.

And finally, in celebration of the master himself, A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American movies.

As for my list, I’d like to first thank Ryan Adams for his daily contributions to making this site so much better than it was before.  His intelligence, compassion and wit have really made a difference.   On top of that, he’s a great friend.  Also I should thank the writers and contributors to the site – Craig Kennedy – my friend and constant screening-going companion, Stephen Holt, Nancy Kriparos, Brian Whisenant and Patrick Mullen.  You guys rule.  David Poland for having me in Gurus of Gold, Tom O’Neil for having me on Gold Derby, Jeff Wells — my dear dear friend for dragging me along to Telluride, finding me shelter, and doing Oscar Poker with me every week — Kris Tapley, Scott Feinberg, Anne Thompson, Steven Pond, Pete Hammond, Ed Douglas for chit-chatting the Oscars with me too.  So many people.  There are way too many people to thank on Twitter and Facebook and on other blogs and websites.  It would be impossible to start listing them.  But I am always appreciative for the links, the jokes, the inspiration and the debate.

I also need to thank, although she doesn’t read this site, my 13 year-old who has been alive almost as long as I’ve been blogging about the Oscars. When I forget how long it’s been I look at her.  She’s almost fully grown.  And taller than I am.

Anyway, to enter this contest simply write who or what you’re thankful for or grateful for.  I’m going to give Ryan the job of choosing the winners.  He will choose them at random.  Please enjoy Thanksgiving if you’re here in America and if not, enjoy what is an ordinary day, perhaps, everywhere else.

  13. I´d like to thank my mother and my father, who suffered with me every minute I wanted to re-watch, and re-study, and re-love every single movie experience I´ve had…with and without them.

They will always be my number one fans…and they will always be my number one reason for never, ever giving up on my dreams of cinema.

    Thanks, guys.

Happy Thanksgiving…even if I am all the way in Ecuador right now.

As E.T. told Eliot, I´m still here.

  15. I am thankful that my Grandfather is alive and well after suffering a stroke two years ago. I am thankful for my friends and my family. I am very thankful for the woman I love and the joy she continues to bring me every day. And finally, I am thankful for the beauty of film and the joy it brings me every day.

  17. My thanks, every day, go towards my grandmother. Her, and my grandfather until he died last summer, have spent the past 20 plus years working to support me and my brother because of the financial and personal problems of my parents. Through all of my life I wouldn’t have had a roof over my head, a car for my parents to drive in, cloth on the first day of school and more recently, tuition for college, if they hadn’t been there. They are always in my thoughts, and on days like today, were family matters most I give my thanks to them.

But I want anti-thank the poeple, who decided to bring Girl with Dragn Tatoo, Hugo, The Artist and others so late in german theatres. Award-season will be over then. :(

  21. I’m thankful for my family, my friends, my wife, my steady job, sites like this one for loving movies (not just handicapping Oscar chances, but appreciating the films that actually HAVE those chances), and people in the industry who make great TV or film because they want to, not because they have to.

  25. Thankful for movies, because it’s the only artform I really care about. Without it, I don’t know what I’d do. Also with movies, there would be no Awards Daily, so think about that Sasha.

  41. I´m grateful that I was able to publish my first book last month (in German) – of course it is about movies, to be more precise: about the depiction of business in American movies. :)

And I´m thankful for having the yearly awards season which gives us crazy film freaks even more possibilities to talk, read and write about films in places like this than in the rest of the year …

I’m thankful for many things about movies, too many to name really. Movies, like books, music, theater, are all fundamental to my soul’s survival and well being.

So this Thanksgiving, I’ll just limit my thanks here to one of my pivotal experiences with cinema: I’m thankful for Marlon Brando, specifically his performance in Streetcar Named Desire. I saw the movie for the first time as a young teen. Even if I didn’t have a vocabulary yet to name why, my mind was blown by everything I was watching, Kazan’s direction, the shadowy cinematography, the beautiful, tragic words of Tennessee Williams, who later became my favorite playwright. But I was especially riveted by Brando, his primal performance gave me an appreciation for the art of acting that would only grow over the years. That performance by Brando and the very image of him also confirmed other things for me personally that I won’t get into here. ;) After that, I watched everything starring Brando I could find. It was then I also realized one could be a student of film just like a student of literature or art. So I consider myself a hopeless, romantic student of film, forever. So I am thankful to Mr. Brando and his Stanley Kowalski for turning my world on its ear that day. I’ve never been the same person since. Thankfully.

I am thankful for those moments in the darkened theater where I can be transported to worlds I can only dream about, be moved to tears by people I don’t know, and laugh about things that make me forget my petty problems. 67. I’m thankful, of course, for my wonderful friends and family. Most of all, for my lovely wife. And I’m thankful for the movies, and the many artists, talents, and technicians that create them. Never does a day go by that I’m not watching, talking about, or writing about film. It is essential, if not to my survival, for my sanity. And i’m grateful for the thoughtful discussion on this site. As silly as all the awards hoopla can be, it’s important to honor and archive the films that impact a time and place, for many reasons, the least of which being what they continue to reveal about ourselves and our world.
On that note, I’m so thankful this year for Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, Moneyball, Drive, as of last night HUGO!! (best of the year so far), and the great anticipation of The Descendants, The Artist, Tintin, War Horse, and Extremely Loud… to come. Happy Thanksgiving.

They picked me up at my lowest, dusted me off and sent me back into the world and I cannot thank them enough for that. I truly love every one of them and cannot be more thankful and more happy about life at home.

Finally Im thankful for directors such as David Fincher, Scorsese and Steve McQueen who will always keep true art in cinema alive and do not care what awards or money their movies make, but make movies because they truly love the craft.

Lastly Im thankful I can enjoy sites like this, Sasha and Ryan, you have kept me informed and excited about movies for years and I am very grateful for that.

I’m honestly most thankful for the friends and family that have been here for me this past trying year and beyond, a group of people who are so loving and caring that I truly do feel like I somehow won some universal lotto to be in their lives and to have them in mine. I’m thankful especially to the two younger brothers that are in my care due to unforeseen circumstances that turned out to be a blessing in disguise as now the three of us are closer than ever with a bond that can’t be bought at any Black Friday sale.

And thank you to all of the bloggers, film makers, actors, and film lovers of all ages and races who share my passion for film and make it such a joy to come on forums and sites such as this to discuss and enthuse about this great art form that has given us all something to think about, talk about, and has made feel or reflect on a moment of time in our lives; a shared experience I’m most thankful to be a part of.

  89. You’ve got my #1 and #4 favorite movies in your prize choices :) but I don’t want to be entered.

I would like to thank you guys for running this site and letting us give you crap every year. It’s a lot of fun. lol I’d also like to thank my old Ma for helping me to test the limits of my sanity. I’d like to thank Tom Hardy’s lips and Ryan Gosling’s tits for brightening what otherwise has been a drab year. And I’d like to thank all the people who make the movies I love. I don’t know what my life would be like without them. This year my top five in order are, so far, Captain America: The First Avenger, Warrior, The Rum Diary, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Limitless. So a special shout-out to those guys.

(I’ve recently updated my top 100 too. If anyone wants to see you can click on my name. I really love those people.)

I am thankful for Christ and His steadfast love, for my family and friends, for all the details and complexities of life, the little moments we don’t recognize as profound til after they’re passed, for those who don’t have much but still persevere with great human strength and dignity, and of course for the movies which give our dreams a tangible existence in reality and express our varied identities as human individuals. Happy Thanksgiving!

  137. As usual I’m going to sound arrogant for those who actually don’t know me.

I am thankful for whoever is screenplaying the life I’m living. Been both a VIP and a complete waste. Been to heaven and hell. Been through depression and the most extreme joy. Most of it, effortlessly. Despite being poor in money, I’m rich in love and friends and family. Travelled round the world, met the most interesting people, met people worth of risking everything and dying for. Thankful for my gifts and thankful for my weaknesses, which keep my feet on the ground.

Also thankful for finding by chance, 10 years ago, Oscarwatch.com, which added an extra layer to my life. For your constant exchange of views – sometimes we do agree, sometimes we don’t, that’s the fun of it, isn’t it? – with Sasha, Bob, Josh, Kris, Nat and the bunch that were there already and actually made the site, and for Fool of a Took (I met him in Eindhoven, and also Ryan Candee in NY!!!), Ms. Librarian, Markku, and so many… for Mistress Malevolent who helped spicing things up, the years we came to awareness more people was paying attention that we ever imagined. The golden age of Oscarwatching, and being part of it. Thanks for creating, keeping this site alive – it was hard, wasn’t it? I didn’t forget and I didn’t contribute echonomically as much as I would have liked ’cause I just couldn’t.

Sometimes I look back and I am thankful for googleing “Oscar” ten years ago, when this one probably one of the most modest Oscar sites in the web.

I must say that this post ain’t that much for the possible – unlikely – reward, but as a tribute for so many years. I’m thankful for everything, Sasha, and everyone else in the site.

I am extremely thankful that Ryan Adams is in my life. He’s an amazingly warm and handsome and insightful. He’s calm and patient and generous with his time and emotions. He’s the reason this site is amazing as it is.

And I have to say it’s quite impressive that he finds the time to do this in addition to having a great musical career. His song “Rescue Blues” made sense out the aftermath of 9/11 and and the two-part Love is Hell is one of my favorite CDs of the last decade. His new album contains what is probably the best new song of the year, “Rocks.” It’s right up there with Laura Marling’s “Sofia” for sure.

In closing my life is so much better for having Ryan Adams in it.

P.S. You can mail me the Harry Potter set.

  151. This might sound stupid, but what I’m the most thankful for is simply existing in this universe. I won the race against over 200 million other sperm cells…so the chance of me being brought into existence was inconceivably low!

Whenever I remind myself of this mind blowing fact I can close my eyes and appreciate the most fundamental of things like touch and smell. And it makes me happy.

I am very thankful to have been brought into this world so I can spread as much good and kindness as I possibly can. After all, I am the product of billions of years of evolution, so I feel obligated to try my very best to act like it!

Having started university this year, the main things I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving are the experiences I’ve had there so far. I’m so privileged to be able to go to an amazing place every day to exercise my brain and explore new possibilities and ideas. We’re so lucky to have what we do!

  189. On this Thanksgiving Day, I’d like to give special thanks to my mother, Linda. For the longest time she was my best movie watching buddy. We’d go to the theater and view the latest releases week after week. Fond memories include the film slate of 1990 where I, as a nine year old, sat amazed with her by my side watching Dick Tracy, Edward Scissorhands, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kindergarten Cop, and Total Recall (yes, she wanted to desensitize me to violence).

However, now it is 2011, and as the days pass I see her slipping farther and farther away, affected by dementia. As I currently type this Thanksgiving Day message, she sits adjacent to me, with us both watching a documentary. Is it the same experience from 1990? Not really, no. She watches, but I look at her eyes and try to gauge her interest or absorption of the film.

Even if it isn’t the same experience from our times together, sitting next to each other inside a movie theater – the middle armrest raised to have us closer together – I am grateful for her introducing films to me at an early age, and hope to share that love with a family of my own one day.

  199. This comment will probably get looked over as most of my comments do. But nobody asked me what I was thankful for all day. It really made me sad honestly, a day set aside to proclaim what you are thankful for and nobody around me made any mention of it. Though I did, and was alone on that branch hahahaha.

I am honestly so thankful for so many things in my life. In a confusing time in my life of not knowing what I want to do with myself, being 20 years old and in my second year of college it has been a trying time. But Im thankful my parents have stuck by my side and showed me that it is completely okay to not know what you want to do, when the world around you is forcing you to choose; and choose something that will make you good money instead of what makes you happy. Which leads me to how thankful I am for this website which has made me full realize and discover my love for film! I have decided I want to major in Film Studies and become a film professor. My parents and friends have fully embraced my decision and that is also so comforting and makes me feel blessed to have such great friends and family. I am excited for my future. :D

I hope everyone takes the time to share how thankful there are to someone and that they have had a great day. But remember to be thankful every day, not just on Thanksgiving.

  213. I’m thankful for the small things in my life that I so often take for granted. The little things my friends and family do for me that make life worth the living. I know it’s not easy to put up with me.

I’m thankful for living in the capital city (of Finland) now, thus being closer to local film industry.

  221. I’m thankful that I live in New York and get to see so many wonderful movies. I grew up not having access to all the smaller films from festivals and overseas and now as a cinephile I feel so lucky that I have the chance to see movies while they are still being released and first devoured by the rabid fans.

I’m also thankful that people take time to make and support smaller films that have something to say even if they don’t have commercial prospects because they help further the art form, and reach people in a way that no other kind of media can.

  235. Before I go on too what I’m thankful for I want to request of Ryan that this piece not be considered when he makes his choices. The reason is simply that the piece is more cathartic to me than it is really worth anything to anyone else.

I spent sixteen years with a man who in all that time never once made me feel like I wasn’t the most important thing in his life. In all those years he never once looked at anyone else. In all those years I never had to entertain the thought of where was he or what might he be doing. Our trust in each other was never questioned and we had a truly monogamous relationship. The only bitch I have about it all is that I had to wait twenty years to find him.

Fourteen years ago he was diagnosed with a brain disease identified casually as PML. The life expectancy with PML was one year at best with a mortality rate of nearly 90 per cent within the first six months of diagnosis. Most diagnosis of the disease usually occurred after death during an autopsy.

We did a rather unconventional treatment that had been developed by a woman at Columbia University and that treatment slowed the progression of T’s disease for 8 years. I am so thankful to Dr. Carolyn Britton for those 8 years. In 2005 the disease reasserted itself and T began the decline into a place where I can’t imagine the frustration and torment it must have caused him. As the brain lesions multiplied they took away a man I had known and loved for a very long time and replaced him and it’s hard to find words to describe what he was replaced with because it wasn’t even a shadow of his former self. Yesterday was a year since he passed.

I’m thankful for the 11 wonderful years we had and where we shared our love for film and the theater. I’m thankful that he supported my dream too write and direct. Of course with his illness all of that unraveled but while he could he was right there. I’m thankful that he believed that I was the best and no one dared argue with him about it, even though his opinion in that regard was rather tainted. I’m thankful that I was with him daily until he died. I’m thankful that his wish to die in his own home and bed was realized. I’m thankful that his family never interfered or questioned the decisions I made. I’m thankful that I was able to care for him at home without any assistance until just a few months before he passed away. I’m thankful that when he couldn’t speak anymore I could see in his eyes how he felt when I looked at him. I’m thankful that he gave me or shared with me, even though the last five years were no picnic; the best years of my life. But beyond that I’m thankful that he’s never left. He’s always right at my side watching out and I know this because you can only have your ass pulled out of the fire so many times before you say to yourself “Okay T obviously you have some damn good connections.”

I’m thankful that he knew I couldn’t say goodbye to him. That I was able to push my fingers through his hair and kiss his brow and then begin doing some of the daily things in the house and he left quietly. He knew that I couldn’t have sat beside him and just let him go. I think sometimes I fought too hard to hold onto him and that may have not given him the peace he so craved.

And that brings me to this. I’m also thankful for that day where I hit the link to this site. This is one of the few places I’ve ventured in the last year. It has been a safe place to socialize in some regard without having to really “be there”. With loss comes grief and then comes insight. Thank you Sasha and Ryan for a safe place to come to begin the new intercourse with the world. Sounds trite I know but believe me it isn’t.

  257. I am most thankful for my parents who have allowed me to experience the kinds of things others could’ve ever dreamed of. They supported me with my choice of my undergraduate degree, they supported me with the kind of work I do right now as an associate producer at a production company, and to top it all off they’ll be supporting me once again in the coming years as I enter film school. They are the driving force of my life and I am and will be forever grateful.

  291. So much to be thankful for, really. Let me limit myself to movie-makers who have meant the most to me during my 72 years: Altman, Antonioni, Bergman, Fincher, Jackson, Keaton, Kubrick, Malick, Scorsese, Spielberg. And if you can’t fill in the first names yourself, you can’t come to my film festival!

  301. Of course I’m thankful for my parents, my friends, my family, etc., but I’ll always be thankful for the one night at a film camp where I saw The Departed. At 13, I witnessed characters as flawed and human as myself and was liberated, fully understanding not only the power of movies, but their transcendence and importance. My family has always provided me with love and opportunities, but I am totally confident that this one screening filled a void within me that nothing but film could fill.

  325. I am thankful for family and friends, of course. I am thankful that my only problems in life would be considered #whitegirlproblems. I am also thankful for the masters of cinema: Scorsese, Allen, Nolan, both Andersons, Spielberg, Bergman, etc. Too many to list. I’m thankful for Studio Ghibli and Pixar for keeping the cinema a magical experience for me. Also, I’m thankful for Michael Chabon and other contemporary authors who inspire me with wonderful prose.

Being not from here, and not having any family in this country, I am so grateful for having such wonderful friends, who invite me into their home for the holidays and make me feel loved. I am very blessed to have all the friends I have in my life.

I am thankful for having my health, having a clear mind, being able to walk and see everything in the world and enjoy all the pleasures this world offers (a little too much eating over Thanksgiving, but what are you gonna do..)

I am thankful for all the great films that came out this year, and for being able to go and see them in the theaters, my absolute favorite thing to do. I am thankful for the great writing, directing, acting, editing, music scoring, cinematography, set & costume design, and all the other great craft that has gone into these films and makes my life so much more enjoyable.
I am thankful for AwardsDaily for allowing me to indulge in my pleasure of analyzing Oscar potential, because heaven knows I can’t do it with any of my friends, not to this degree. I am thankful for being able to log in here and discuss it with all the like-minded Oscar freaks :)

    Greetings from Germany!

First of all: Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the U.S.

I’m thankful for the movies (and therefore, of course, for sites like this one) that have enriched my life and made my days so many times; for movies that made me laugh (“When Harry met Sally …”) and cry (“Philadelphia”), gave me food for thaught (“Inception”) or thrilled me (“Speed”).

And last but not least: I’m thankful for my family and friends.

  335. We in the Pacific Northwest got hit with hurricane-force winds yesterday and last night, knocking the daylights out of this area (as well as the power), so, firstly, I’m thankful to still be here. Nip and tuck, for awhile.

I’m also thankful for everyone who posts here – I love our shared passion for movies, especially when we don’t agree – and for Sasha and Ryan for providing an exciting and intelligent arena for sharing our opinions.

Belated Happy Thanksgiving to those of you south of the border.

  345. Am I too late? I hope not..

I am thankful for discovering Awards Daily roughly about 2 years ago/ It’s now one of the sites I constantly visit each time I go online.

I am thankful for the wonderful world of cinema and films. For without it, this existence would be a dreary one.

I am thankful for novels/books, for their transportive power. It’s the only other thing I am passionate about.

And lastly I am thankful for finally having the courage to accept who I am. It was a difficult decision given my extremely conservative background. And I am thankful for my family that despite our vast differences in viewpoints, we still love each other deeply.

  347. I always look forward to Thanksgiving coz this day kicks off the Oscar season for me. Previously it was the NBR awards that I eagerly anticipated in the last days of November, now it would have to be the NYFCC awards.

I just wanna thank God for giving me life.

And I really would like to become immortal. Seriously. Alive forever.

  349. I want to thank my children, Sara Kate and Henry Thomas. The two of them have taught me more about the goodness of God than I have learned through all my life experiences or my three theological degrees. They have also revealed to me a depth of love which I did not know existed, but helps me understand my heavenly Father’s love with a new clarity every day. Sara Kate and Henry, I love you more than I can ever tell you with my words. And thanks for watching and loving movies almost as much as your dad does!!

I’m thankful for Terrence Malick for giving me the pleasure of seeing the beauty of Tree of Life. It lets me ponder about my relationship with my Dad, how we’ve grown apart over the years and how I’ve longed for us to be together again. This Thanksgiving I met my Dad for the first time in 10 years. It was great to catch up and revisit the good old times and celebrate our reunion. Cheers.

  357. This year, I’m so thankful to have a job… and one that I love at that. I’m thankful for my friends, my family, and my God because their unconditional love reminds me that I am blessed with a life so much better than anything a goof like me could ever deserve. There is a lot of sadness in the world, but there are still pockets of joy like the one I’m fortunate enough to wake up in every day. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

  361. Ben Gordon

In September 2011, I was hospitalized and placed in isolation after contracting a deadly strain of a virus called Ecoli. My parents were warned by the doctors that I was not responding to my medication as they hoped and to possibly prepare for the worst. Knowing how much film means to me, how it inspires and moves me, they snuck in a portable DVD player and sat with me watching some of my favourite movies – Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Jane Eyre, Network, Wall-E, Sense & Sensibility, The Dark Knight, Fargo, The People Vs Larry Flynt. We watched 15 films over 4 days, discussing the stories, the artistry, the political and social contexts and just what we loved or hated. Much to the doctors surprise, they began to see an improvement in my condition. My parents continued to sit with me, watch film, and I made a full recovery within 2 weeks and have since been released. Following my release, I realized just how important film is to my life and, with the support of my parents, I am trying to make my dream of working in film marketing a reality.

So, I would like to thank the wonderful filmmakers, actors and everyone down to the 3rd assistant makeup artist’s assistant for creating works of art that inspired me to fight for my life. More importantly, I am grateful to my parents for breaking the hospital rules and, just like in the movies, creating a happy ending and new opportunities by doing so.

  363. I’m thankful that my brother is alive. He got married June 4th of this year. He went on his honeymoon with his new wife, Crystal Rodriguez, to the Bahama’s. On the last day of their honeymoon, they were involved in a parasailing accident. She died but he survived. They were married twelve days. So…I don’t know how that sounds to anyone here, but I’m thankful at least one of them came home.
