God, it would be great if it was announced that it was a mistake or there was some tampering or controversy with these nominations being thrown out!

Okay, I made some grammar errors. By $20, I meant $20 mil. They seriously need to re-evaluate their standards and change their rules regarding budget, studio, and foreign films because the Independent Spirits Awards used to be different than this. I want them to go back to their old rules. I was so put-off by this list that I thought it was a mistake or that it was wrong. Just strange and so off with little correlation or consistency. I might not take this awards show seriously as a precursor. I just hope The Artist doesn’t sweep and these noms are indicating a trend.

It is utter nonsense that Glenn Close was snubbed. Their budget rules used to be looser in the past and they should allow foreign production companies like they used to. Indie to me is arthouse or quirky, or smaller in scope and not mainstream. I know it was not like this in the ’90’s or even early 2000’s. With the former rules, Tree of Life, Melancholia, The Help, Shame, We Bought a Zoo, Tyrannosaur, Attack the Block, Jane Eyre, and etc would be getting nominations. Too much discrepancy for me. You have Shailene but no Clooney. You have Janet McTeer but no Glenn Close. You have Angelica but no JGL?! Plummer but no Ewan McGregor?!
I heard Fox Searchlight was trying to see if they can distribute The Oranges this year. That would have been big at the Indie’s. I know Hugh Laurie and Leighton would have made the cut. Now because these jerks released it too early, they might postpone to 2012 because it has no chance at the one awards show where it had the biggest chance to get nominated. Melancholia and others were screwed over by the change in rules which I know were not always in place or enforced. Some of the best indie’s were British! Europe had the strongest output this year!
I was not even a huge fan of Midnight in Paris but I am shocked that Woody Allen and Owen Wilson were snubbed.
Some of these nominations are bs. Unless The Artist or Drive dominates, I don’t see much of a correlation to The Oscars or the rest of the awards race. I personally am one of the few who doesn’t want to see those two movies dominate the race. The awards race has the potential to be much stronger than this. Just very disappointed and baffled. I need to seriously reconfigure my predictions and expectations. Very surprised at the shut-outs and annoyed by some recent update to rules.

What the hell? The Independent Spirit Awards continues to be more random, haphazard, and disorganized with a lack of correlation every year. Many indie films are on the bubble when it comes to squeezing in a release date in December. They have not seen many movies yet so a few movies will be snubbed because the Indie Spirit for some absurd reason chose to release their nominations earlier than the Critics Chocie, GG, and Guilds. The actual ceremony takes place after those award shows and only a day before the Oscars. The order is screwed up. They should wait until all of the eligible 2011 releases get distributed and go by the order so it is not haphazard like this and other indie movies can make the cut. It doesn’t make sense to me. I personally there will be a weak correlation between the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars this year.
For example, The Descendants got nominated for Best Feature, Director, supp actress, but not for lead? Albert Nobbs got shut out. There is no Tilda Swinton and a bunch of people were left out. Angelica Huston, I thought, stood out the least from the cast of 50/50. JGL, Seth, and Kendrick all get snubbed but she gets in? What?!
I looked at the past slate of Indie Spirit Awards, some of what people are citing for ineligibility like the budget of Tree of Life or an international film…is not computing accurately especially if you research past nominees. Foreign and movies that had more than a $20 mil budget were included in the past, so what gives now suddenly?! There is way too many discrepancies unless there was some recent rule change. It just seems off when it comes to the rest of the race in comparison. I also feel it was too early for them to release the nominations. I really hope the Critics Choice, GG’s, and etc don’t follow suit by stupidly releasing their nominations before getting the chance to see all the movies because I know some movies will attempt to get a release date towards the end of December.
They seriously to evaluate their nomination standards and go back to their former rules. They need to release their noms in January, not this early. I think the Robert Altman award for Margin Call was the only one I expected and predicted. I know I am ranting but these noms irked me. Too early and off-course as far as correlation. I don’t like these new, stupid stipulations because they certainly were not applied before because I know some international movies and films that used more than $20 mil in their budget made the cut in the past.

I really don’t understand the definition of what is an indie anymore. Most of the films nominated seem “big” somehow. I was sort of hoping to use the list of nominations to find some good obscure films to watch but then I notice that I’ve heard and read about them all.

That Close, Midnight in Paris (film/director), Levitt, Clooney, and Felicity Jones are shut out is SO weird. If Close, Clooney and Midnight are LOCKS for the Academy, and if Close and Clooney are among the frontrunners in their category, how the HELL did they not get in here with so much less competition. Weird that the nominations and WINNERS from Gotham and this are so different.
How many voters are there? From this it seems to be very few, since the nominations are SO off. I now this ain’t the Oscars, but still? Clooney and (arguably) Close giving career-best performances? Midnight is the return of Allen? And then all SHUT OUT? It would seem they are voting anti-frontrunners just to make a point.

What a travesty that Glenn Close hasn’t been nominated here. To think of her transformation in Albert Nobbs, that it has failed to warrant an Indie Spirit nomination is inexplicable. I hope she gets plenty of recognition through the rest of the season.

I just clued in that Jim Rash, the co-writer of The Descendents, is the same Jim Rash who plays Dean Pelton on Community! If he gets an Oscar nod, then the producers of that show should definitely use it as leverage to save my beloved sitcom from cancellation!

Here’s hoping that the attention to Take Shelter was paid because the nominators really liked it and not just because all the other great Indies of the year were foreign.

Netflix doesn’t even have a “save” page up yet for Think of Me, even though it premiered at TIFF. They’re really falling down over there.

What the heck is Cedar Rapids?
So I’m confused about Midnight in Paris. It was eligible but then not nominated? If it can’t make it here, it’ll be weird if it gets an Oscar nom right? I dunno looking at that list, it looks like it might be a boring show. The people they chose NOT to invite to their party. Maybe they can have it in a cave again.
What an odd morning. Glad I didn’t unnecessarily wake up.

I was informed that if a film’s budget was more the $20M then it’s disqualificated. So that’s why there is no The Tree of Life among the nominations.

Sasha,
Please enlighten us as to why JGL is not nominated for best actor in the INDEPENDENT awards. We’re not even talking the Academy here; it would seem a given to me that JGL would be nominated in the Independent Awards. If he isn’t nominated for a Golden Globe for best Comedy/Musical, the world is officially insane.

you got that right….50/50 was getting rave reviews and so was JGL’s performance and then all of a sudden, it’s hardly getting any attention as if it just never existed. JGL and Gosling (Drive) should be nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards…but Lord knows it’s not going to happen.

Maybe they didn’t feel like the big Hollywood figures needed the help. It’s like that joke Sarah Silverman made when she hosted a few years ago: “This show is the champion of struggling artists like Ang Lee and George Clooney.”
