I remember the Howard Shore film music for The Departed. But then again, Shore’s music for the Cronenberg film Crash was so different. It took me awhile to get comfortable with that.
I don’t get the “Ratatouille” comparison, as far as sheet music is concerned. I think that this is a very original work from Shore. Quite different from anything he’s ever done.

Totes agree, it is very reminiscent of Michael Giacchino’s Ratatouille score, in part due to the obvious Parisian influences, but also due to the mood and orchestration of the two works. In fact, in places, it’s way too similar to Giacchino’s score for my liking – such a talented composer ought to be able to compose more original material.
Martin Scorsese always seems to offer Howard Shore a lot of scope for invention, and thus Shore’s work for Scorsese’s films often sounds rather atypical to what we might expect from him. This is almost unrecognisable as a Howard Shore score! It’s a little disjointed, but I do like it very much.

Gorgeous movie, gorgeous score. I hope this will draw more than just a specialized cinephile audience, because it deserves to be widely seen. So far, surprisingly, it has a higher Yahoo Users rating than The Descendants.
As a hermit, I relate to this film. I want to hide out in that marvelous train station and people-watch every day. Me and my cat and my sad-faced automaton.

Brilliant score even though it reminds me a bit too much of Micharel Giacchino´s work on “Ratatouille”.

haunting score. I would love to hear their thoughts about it. like a dream. deserves all the recognition that may come its way.
just returned from Hugo. the theater was empty except for us on Thanksgiving morning. applause from the two of us anyway. Hugo grabbed my heart from the opening frame and held it through the credits. It exceeded all expectations.
hope the song at the end is eligible.

Are you sure this is the score of Hugo? It sounds like the score of Amelie…

By the way, all my bets on “Hugo” this year. I mean, the chemistri is perfect: a family movie about movies in 3D by Scorsese with great score music, that plays in paris and goes straight in the heart of it’s audience. C’mon! I don’t even need to watch it! 😀

Hugo – In Germany in theaters february 9th :((((((((((((((((( …. The music is beautiful! John Williams could think about joining Hans Zimmer this year. 🙂

Saw HUGO tonight – and I’m so glad you posted this score. I found the soundtrack on iTunes! So beautiful. There’s an original song on that Paramount site too. And that, too, is gorgeous. The movie really took me by surprise. I have kids, but didn’t take them as it was a late showing but now that I’ve seen it I can’t wait to take my ten year old. It’s not a movie FOR kids though, but definitely appropriate for kids. Frankly, it’s the kind of film I’d LIKE for my kids to see. In terms of JJ’s reaction and wondering what the “true Purpose” of the film is, I guess I can say for me what it was — the film was very much about wanting to find your place in the world, not wanting to feel cast aside or forgotten, second chances and (corny though i may sound) happy endings. I loved every breath of the movie and highly recommend it.

I had a similar reaction, JJ. There’s something about the artificiality that kept me at a remove. And I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone comment about all the damn British accents in the movie! I’ve never seen a more phony vision of Paris.

I just saw HUGO. I’m trying to process my reaction to it. I really enjoyed the artistry and technical prowess of it. The cast was uniformly good in terms of what was asked of them. The whole thing was very self-reflexive about filmmaking. While I appreciate that, does it make the film a bit of an indulgence? Also, I’m not sure how I feel about a film that’s about the magic of film but set in such an artificial world. There’s no contrast: real world vs. film world. I think this makes the whole thing kind of fold in on itself. The whole film does sustain this tension between technology and heart. Many people in the industry will relate to this. Especially those who want to create but are stuck winding clocks, so to speak. I think the film had more technique than heart. I don’t know. I’m confused about this movie and what it’s true “purpose” is.

Just to be a great film. It doesn’t follow a cookie-cutter mold. It has carved out a place for itself as a wholly original thing onto itself.
