Well, this is three days before The girl with the dragon tattoo was released, ignoring it seems wrong and unlikely. I really enjoyed Newmans work in Thedebt but everone ignores it so here´s the nominees. Forget everything about compensation etc. Deakins has like, what 13 noms?Hehe…As for Drive and its amount of wins, something seems a bit off.
The girl with the dragon tattoo- Broadcast critics,Golden Globe and Washington will suffice.
The artist- I heard somewhere it couldn´t be nommed, since it wasn´t an original score but with its Globe win,Im obviously misinformed.
Hugo-Howard Shores work here is magic.Hope and think this one will win.
War Horse-Sentimental and cliche,yes…..still I admit to liking it. Not likely to win.
Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows- not worthy of one but Desplat is everywhere and will get his due.
My predix thus far would be:
-THE ARTIST
-HUGO
-EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE
-THE ADVENTURES OF TIN TIN
-GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Shocked A Dangerous Method didn’t make it through…if any Shore score should make it through this year, it’s that one. It’s absolutely stunning. Thought for sure it would make it.

Too bad. Would’ve been shocked if Drive or Tree of Life were elgible, so no surprises there.
Would absolutely love to see Super 8 make it through for an amazing score by Michael Giacchino (loved him since The Incredibles), but haven’t been seeing too much award love for it, thus far…which could mean nothing, as I’ve seen so many unexpected scores show up in this category over the years, so I’ll give it to the music group- they do a good job at spreading it out (ex. The Village, The Good German…).
I think Trent Raznor and Atticus Ross might do it for a second year, at least for a nomination, with their score for Dragon Tattoo. It’s so moody, and enigmatic- much more enjoyable than their winning score for The Social Network, so it would be no surprise to see them show up in there- but I wish there was more love for the score for HANNA by the Chemical Brothers…that score was my favourite!!! Beyond!!! Maybe that can sneak in, so fingers crossed 🙂

That movie was beyond! Really a great movie of the year. Cate should be recieving more praise for one of the most twisted villains I’ve ever seen. Not to mention the editting, sound, sound-editting, cinematography, and production design. In my wildest dreams! Hehe….whatever.
I’ve said my piece,
-Aaron
I like this idea about an Oscar for best use of music in a film. It makes sense, especially since many films adopt different songs and types of music to help develop a film . . . and often very little of it is original. “The Tree of Life” would have been the front-runner this year if there were such a category. The music chosen for that film was absolutely beautiful.
I’ve noticed the music used in some of the 80s films is essential. Case in point? Don’t laugh. But the music in “Sixteen Candles” is one of the best uses of music and songs I’ve seen in any film. Next time you watch it, pay attention to how the songs chosen help each scene. Outstanding.
Desplate for the win – for Harry Potter. Bravo.
I loved the Super 8 and Tintin scores. Long shots both, but I would be pleasantly surprised if one of them made it.
I don’t think Ross amd Reznor will be nominated this year.
Don’t know why everyone is shocked THE TREE OF LIFE isn’t on here… most of the music isn’t original to the film. I do think the Academy needs to add best soundtrack (as applicable to how it was used in context rather than being original or not). They knocked out THERE WILL BE BLOOD, who borrowed amongst himself; sequels like THE DARK KNIGHT which re-use score; and every pop music soundtrack from GARDEN STATE to (500) DAYS OF SUMMER.
OCO300/Author you need to stop. Everyone can see you wrote both those comments under different names.
Isn’t that a long passage from Bernard Hermann’s Vertigo score in some of the final scenes of The Artist?
John Williams could have two nominations this year.
@Arthur but you do have to admit it did an excellent job on the box office and critics chart.
The Reson why Alexander Desplat Might & Might Not WIN for his “Harry Potter” Score
WHY HE MIGHT WIN:
1-. it is a beautiful score with stirring sounds and magical pieces that adapated perfectly into the potter world, it is actually the best HARRY POTTER score.
2-. The academy has rewarded fantasy films for their beautiful scores in the past, “Star Wars” “Return Of The King” among others.
3-. John Williams DID NOT win for either the 1st movie or the 3rd (WICH WAS THE OTHER MAJOR SCORE ON THE FRANCHISE” but by that time the potter world was vary underrated.
4-. Alexander Desplat HASN’T WON AN OSCAR YET, and he has done beautiful scores and the best thing for the academy would be to reward him with an oscar
5-. The Harry Potter Sound it’s something that will stick itno everyone’s memories FOREVER, and what could be best than rewarding the franchise with something so charactheristic of it, THE SOUND
WHY MIGHT NOT WIN:
1-. In The scores are featured a couple times “Hedwig’s Theme” & “Hogwarts’ Theme” both from john williams work besides there is a part of “Dumbledore’s Farewell” from the 6TH MOVIE Score made by Nicolas Hooper.
2-. The academy has only nominated the both scores that John Williams did and he didn’t even won, not even for the 3RD MOVIE wich was basically the best score that year
3-. Alexander Desplat wasn’t nominated for his work on”Deathly Hallows Part 1″ ALTHOUGH THAT WAS A VERY SUTIL SCORE, IT WASN’T IN THE PLANS TO EVEN COMPITE WITH THAT SCORE…
4-. The academy has never rewarded Harry Potter with an oscar so why start now and with a big one as this ? many of us think that they’re thinking in honoring the franchise but they might not even care so WHY DO IT NOW
@Arthur what are the overall scores for those movies you listed?
Why do you people keep puttin “Plante of the apes” score in the race, i thought it had it’s moments but it was basically repeiting the same music alll over te movie so “APES” is out, i thrully imagine that The Artist (against my will) it’s gonna take this, but i also think we could see some Desplat love after all
My Predictions:
Ludovic Bource for “The Artist”
Alexander Desplat for “Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close”
Alexander Desplat for “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2”
John Williams for “War Horse”
Howard Shore for “Hugo”
“I want the adapted score oscar back.”
Yes! I like the fact that some critic circles give a “best use of music” award, which is what it should be about, anyway. This would put music in a more collaborative light, similar to editing and cinematography.
I know people are bummed about neither Drive nor The Tree of Life making the cut, but remember how many scores have previously been deemed ineligible in other years? Most years, about four or five highly-acclaimed scores don’t meet the Academy’s eligibility requirements, and this year there are only two or three. Furthermore, weren’t we expecting that? I definitely saw it coming for The Tree of Life, and at least it improves Alexandre Desplat’s chances at being nominated for one of his other scores.
Drive has really great songs (!) but it’s definitely not one of best Scores of the year.
My Cut:
Ludovic Bource – THE ARTIST
Alexandre Desplat – HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 2
Howard Shore – HUGO
Patrick Doyle – RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Michael Giacchino – SUPER 8
that would be one hell of a Line-Up!
I want the adapted score oscar back. Last year Black Swan, now Drive. It stings in my movie heart.
Yeah, Bource is winning.
I think Desplat will get the nod. And it will be for Potter because it finishes the series triumphantly and Extremely Loud’s score is good, but the film has received mixed/negative reviews so far and has no buzz, so they’ll want to reward him for something.
Oh, and I don’t think that W.E.’s score will be nominated. I mean, we shouldn’t be affected by the Globe nomination (ahem, bribe).
No have
– Drive
– The Tree of life
Why???
Drive is the best score of the year.
Scott: Clint has composed for years, but I think his son is better. Though I have not heard the jazz album(s) by Clint. My friend bought one ten years ago.
On Score: The Artist is the winner – 90% chance.
It’s not even an “if” for me. Desplat should win for “Harry Potter”. It is a great score.
And I also think the score for “Anonymous” was outstanding (forget about the movie, the score was really wonderful).
It’s unfortunate that the Academy seems to think the songs in Drive overshadowed the score, though both are flawless.
And I do love Desplat’s work for Tree of Life, but honestly it’s just not in the movie. So no surprise there.
Ludovic Bource, The Artist
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Alexandre Desplat, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
Alberto Iglesias, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Abel Korzeniowski, W.E.
alt.
Howard Shore, Hugo
John Williams, The Adventures of Tintin
I agree, Dave L. How can The Artist not win this one? If ever a film depended on a compelling score…
I think The Artist has this in the bag. Any disagreement?
Wooo HOoo! Hanna!
Because barely any of it was used.
Why isn’t The Tree of Life eligible?
My God, where is The Tree of Life?
…and this is the first year I actually consider his work memorable and worthy, he hadn’t impressed me much before.
I think Desplat deserves two nominations this year, his scores for ‘Deathly Hallows’ and ‘Loud and Close’ are wonderful.
@ John
I’m predicting exactly this 5:
Ludovic Bource, The Artist
Alexandre Desplat, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Howard Shore, Hugo
John Williams, War Horse
Alt: Alexandre Desplat – ELIC
It will be a shame if Desplat misses here!
WHAT!?! Drive had the best score of the year!
I was waiting to see Drive’s score on the list. It’s too bad that the Academy won’t recognize Cliff Martinez amazing score.
Is the music from DRIVE not a score? Honestly, it’s the only one I really remember. It was really good.
Can Shame make it?
I’m surprised Desplat is on for HP 7.2 since there was “unoriginal” material in the score.
—
They had John’s score in the film, but the actual soundtrack was all his, with just a bit of Hedwig’s Theme.
I’m surprised Desplat is on for HP 7.2 since there was “unoriginal” material in the score.
As great as Desplat’s score was for HP, I feel like Williams’ cues overshadow his otherwise delightful work.
Certainly doesn’t help that Williams’ grand Hogwarts theme in Kings Cross station sends the series off.
I’m predicting:
Hugo – Howard Shore
War Horse – John Williams
The Artist – Ludovic Buorce
The Help – Thomas Newman
Rise of the Apes – Patrick Doyle
My favorite score (Drive) didn’t make the cut, but I’m not surprised.
Tintin’s score is so fun and creative it’d be a damn shame not to be nominated.
Alexander Desplat for HARRY POTTER, it was a beautiful score at the same level of those that john williams did to open up the franchise
Predictions!
Ludovic Bource, The Artist
Alexandre Desplat, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Howard Shore, Hugo
John Williams, War Horse
Outside shots:
Alexandre Desplat, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
Abel Korzeniowski, W.E.
Albert Inglesias, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Dario Marianelli, Jane Eyre
John Williams, Adventures of Tintin
Thomas Newman, The Help
Where are the scores for Drive and A Dangerous Method?
Reznor/Ross, Yared, Escott, Doyle and Desplat, please.
Hopefully Desplat gets his well earned Oscar this year! His scores for Harry Potter, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close were incredible.
I didn’t know Clint Eastwood composes…damn that man does everything!
