btw i misspelled soar. I spelled it sour =/
I love Melissa. She gave one of the best performances of the year. I didn’t expect her to go this far (due to being a comedic role), but I am happy as hell.
Eh.
[please add the missing word ‘are’ in the first sentence]
Although there a few repeats here, this is probably the most interesting precursor award year in like… ever. By this point the front runner in nearly every category is beginning to appear and making the race seem even dull, even before the major releases. I’m thrilled that the critics are so mixed in their appreciation for what feels like the ‘best.’
Good to see wins for Refn and Thelma Schoonmaker. Also Shame making their top 10 list.
In my opinion, Melissa McCarthy’s possible Oscar nomination would be well deserved considering it is a full fleshed comedic performances that sours dramatically as well when the role warrants it. To say one performance is more deserving than another is simply ridiculous considering the Awards Season is so subjective in general. Anyways i do hope McCarthy makes the AMPAS cut!
Ugh Melissa McCarthy. Let’s hope she doesn’t land a SAG nomination tomorrow, at least not at the expense of Carey Mulligan or Vanessa Redgrave. I would be fine (I guess) if she knocked out Bejo, but for the love of god I do not understand the love for her! And before any one bites off my head, I have no problem at all with a comedic performance being accordingly recognized by the Academy (I thought a few years ago that Emily Blunt was very awards-worthy for her scene stealing work in The Devil Wears Prada. I’d take her any day over Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine). But I didn’t find anything compelling about McCarthy in Bridesmaids…it was a role someone like Zach Galifianakis would have played had the film been male-oriented. I’ve seen it before–it’s nothing bad, but nothing extraordinary or memorable like Redgrave and Mulligan’s work this year. I would have to say you may be delusional if you think it’s superior. Anyways, McCarthy seems like a genuine and likable person from interviews I’ve seen her in, so maybe that will be enough to secure her a nomination…
“is The Descendants going to be nominated for Drama or Comedy at the Globes?”
I read on one of the Oscar websites that “The Descendants” will be considered in the Drama category. So will “Moneyball.”
Skills aside, there is always a “sweetheart nominee” who captures the public’s attention and gathers momentum like a snowball rolling down a hill (Paltrow, Bullock, Tomei, Scorvino, even Portman) and I think McCarthy is the candidate this year.
WOW, now Melissa McCarthy has the most wins in the best supporting actress category. Sure, it could change in a second, but it’s still surprising. I knew she had a shot at an Oscar-nod but I thought IF she will get there, it will be with a Golden Globe-nod and maybe a SAG-nomination, but definitely not with critics groups.
Having said that, Jessica Chastain still has New York and Los Angeles on her side, so McCarthy is not necessarily a clear frontrunner…or at least, not for now : http://awardscorner.blogspot.com/2011/12/2011-awards-summary-chart.html
Refn, Williams, McCarthy… awesome. I still need to see THE ARTIST though.
Melissa McCarthy made Bridesmaids the most talked about comedy of the summer and totally deserves a nomination and maybe the win. I’m not saying she is better in any way than Vanessa Redgrave but too often we overlook comedic performances in favor of the dramatic ones. And speaking of overlooked, where is the love for Margin Call. Jeremy Irons and Kevin Spacey gave two of the best performances of the year. I hope Oscar doesn’t forget them.
@alexg What would be cool would be to see them switch roles
Okay–I thought McCarthy getting an Oscar nomination, while well deserved, was a pipe dream. It might actually happen!
I am happy the critics are noticing this performance because despite the fact that it is in a ‘comedy’ it is actually a fully realized performance. Meghan is a ‘high school loser’ who has made something of herself. She is integral to the plot. The scene where she gets Annie out of her slump is very high calibre acting. And outrageously funny. “I know you look at me now, and must think ‘wow, she must have breezed though high school'”. Haha.
Okay, so fine, this isn’t Vanessa Redgrave DRAMATIC acting, but that isn’t a fair comparison. Redgrave is great for what she did, and McCarthy is great for what she accomplished.
is The Descendants going to be nominated for Drama or Comedy at the Globes?
The Globes and guilds will determine ‘Drive”s chances for Oscar. but right now yes i’d say its officially a contender for Best Picture and Director.
Once again, Drive pops up in a significant way. It clearly has its advocates out there. I’m beginning to think a Best Director and even (though less likely) a Best Picture nod might be coming its way.
i think mccarthy is getting in with both the globes and sag awards…the acting community loves her and globes likes to get comedy in a lot more than the oscar esp in the supporting races…as for oscar i don’t know. i would be quite surpised
Willaims for the win
In my opinion, McCarthy is well on her way to oscar nomination if her critics traction continues although it will ge key to get Globe Nom as well as SAG although her landing a BAFTA might be a little too much of a stretch.
Mad much Jordan??
How the heck does McCarthy keep winning awards, let alone get nominated for them? You’re trying to tell me she’s better than Redgrave in CORIOLANUS? They shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath.
GOOD TO SEE MY DAWSONS CREEK GIRL WINNIN IN THIS GROUP, THEY HAVE A GOOD SHOT WITH THE BEST ACTRESS WINNERS
Nic Refn! Wonderful!
Man or Muppet. All I needed.
Michelle Williams <3
Sure it’s boring to see The Artist get Best Picture AGAIN… but congrats to my man Nicholas Winding Refn for FINALLY getting a win for Best Director! I know he won Best Director at Cannes, but that was before most critics even saw the movie. The more recent the better.
Happy for McCarthy, still don’t get all this love for Brooks.
Wow, it’s really nice to finally see some support for Warrior and 50/50. It’s just a shame that Dragon Tattoo and Tinker Tailer didn’t make it.
First critic awards for Jean Dujardin.
