1. Drive (“too bloody, too creative, too ambitious and too polarizing to comfort audiences”)
2. The Artist (“style to burn and unexpected soul”)
3. The Descendants (“orchestrated without a false note”)
4. Moneyball (show us “how to find value in what others miss.”
5. Midnight in Paris (“Woody’s love letter to the City of Light”)
6. Hugo (“An irresistible bedtime story for movie lovers”)
7. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (“the acting artistry of Gary Oldman”)
8. Margin Call (“blue-chip acting as Wall Street gets it in the teeth”)
9. The Tree of Life (Malick’s “one-of-a-kind film strives even when it falls short”)
10. War Horse, The Help, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
that’s a loooot of dvd/bluray covers that could be potentially fucked up.
Glad to see him mention Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Harry Potter and The Tree of Life on the list. Those are my three favorites of the year so far.
Gosh, look at this list. Is Peter Travers in league with Awards Daily? (well, as far as his best and what you all think are most likely to be nominated). 😉
I do like the little blurb descriptions he’s included though…wish he’d done so for the ones tied for 10th as well.
And he gave an additional 2 just to cover all the bases for possible nominees it seems, lol
I agree with Scott. This is a damned pedestrian list.
@steve50
i’m 100% with you on the Malick comment
@Bryce: I’m sure on GoldDerby he had TGWTDT in first place for the longest time. dunno what happened.
Good for Drive – it’s getting some well-deserved traction now after a rough release, thanks to the misleading ad campaign.
Mr Travers: “Malick’s ‘one-of-a-kind film strives even when it falls short’” …short of what, exactly?

All good movies, but come on. Does anyone, year in and year out, offer a more generic list? Snoozefest, 2011.
No kidding…I wouldn’t be surprised if given the same format as last year the 10 nominees came from his list.
oh, I see…tied for 10th
An 88 isn’t good enough?
Well shit. Here I was…foolishly hoping that that tweet saying ‘a reliable source said Travers thought Fincher topped TSN with TGWTDT’ was true. Goddammit. I think it’s time for me to give up on it winning.
I’m beginning to wonder if Drive might get some academy lovin’. I doubt there is rooom for Tree of Life and Drive, but maybe people will jot down Drive on their lists in the #1 spot.
I hope at least one niche film makes it.

Drive has been showing up on a lot of lists lately, so I hope this means it will get noticed by the Academy more than expected. We’ll get an idea next week when the Globes are announced.
If I recall correctly he enjoyed the Swedish versions a great deal. So maybe he skipped the Fincher film.
No dragon tattoo from Pete Travers…Did he write it before seing it???
Yeah, this virtually is a regular AMPAS voters’ Oscar ballot…come on!
But, to hell with it, everything in support of Drive is fine by me…
@ red_wine
It’s Peter Travers. He picks what AMPAS members will pick. And this is why I’m so excited to see Drive, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Margin Call and The Tree of Life on his list.
I’m with red_wine on this one…
Nice Oscar predictions. But where is his Top 10??
Finally some Tinker Taillor Soldier Spy love
Now that’s what I’m talking about! Drive is definitely the best film of the year.
Yay Drive! One of the best films of the year. Fingers crossed that it can score a Best Picture nomination.
