For our 12th Annual No Guts, No Glory you can name three potential upsets — like serious upsets — that might happen tomorrow morning. They have to be near impossibilities. But still within the realm of reality. Pick up to 3.
My three are:
1. Harry Potter for ensemble
2. Drive for ensemble
3. Demian Bechir for Best Actor
Whoops, except for Sasha’s call for Bichir!
Props to CineJab for NGNG guesses.
Looks like there were a lot of opportunities that were overlooked: Bichir, Nolte, Brooks (not getting in), Woodley (not getting in)
Oh Sorry, forgot another one:
Viggo Mortensen – Supporting Actor for “A Dangerous Method”
Just One:
“Carnage” for Ensemble
Judi Dench – J.Edgar (Supporting Actress)

This is less a NGNG list than a wishlist. In so doing, I think I’ve formed my most gutsy, glorious NGNG list to date…
– Michael Parks for Red State

And they’re all in Supporting Actor, which makes it even more likely obvs…

Chloe Grace Moretz: Best Supporting Actress – Hugo
If ‘Harry Potter’ gets nominated for stunt ensemble (which I think it will), its chances of getting in some decent nominations at the Oscars will DEFINITELY deteriorate further as the Academy will surely look at it as a film which is good enough only for good old action stuff, and nothing else, no plot (typical Hollywood action film). The final third of the film (before the flash-forward scene) suggested exactly that (no plot whatsoever, just plain action). And more, it’s going to be even funnier ‘cos it will be nominated in a category that will have NO bearing on how the award season will further progress. Quite humorous!!
Kirsten Dunst gets a Best Actress nomination for Melancholia
Brad Pitt is a double nominee for Moneyball and The Tree of Life

I hate to burst some bubbles here, but these people were not even on the ballot: Ezra Miller (for Kevin although he’s in leading for Happy Day) and Olivia Coleman. Hunter McCracken, Rupert Grint and Charlotte Gainsbourg were all in leading (although McCracken is not in the ensemble list for TREE). We got the screener for Planet of the Apes on the last day of voting. I’m not sure people saw it in time.

@Antoinette: The Ensemble nominations are expected to be: The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, EL&IC, and TTSS/Bridesmaids/Beginners. And after what happened with BFCA, Harry Potter is definitely NGNG.

@Alan G.
You are absolutely right. Beginners is easily in my top 3 of 2011 and I still think that McGregor gave a career best performance that deserves a nomination, but alas is far too subtle for Oscar.
Harry Potter for Ensemble is NG, NG? I definitely think that will happen. Cripes. lol Now I gotta do one.

Just kidding! Here’s my real NGNG:
1) Beginners for Best Ensemble

Kirsten Dunst and Kristin Wiig for best actress.
Ellen Barkin for best actress (THIS SHOULD HAPPEN)

No nomination for Glenn Close
Best Actor: Owen Wilson(Midnight in Paris)
Best Supporting Actor: Jonah Hill(Moneyball)
Best Ensemble: J. Edgar
@Macy yup I know, he is clearLy the lead but I’m thinking if would be like the case of Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit in which they placed her in supporting presumably because she’s a new, young actress and has veteran actors as co-stars. Anyway, that’s why I placed him in the No Guts, No Glory prediction
No Guts, No Glory.
Ewan McGregor for Beginners because his performance was great, the movie is great and it’s not just about Plummer.
Ronan, Harry Potter, Serkis
@forg: Thomas Horn is credited as the Lead Actor foe EL&IC…and I don’t think his character is a ‘supporting’ character

‘Super 8’ (Best Ensemble)
1. The Ides of March for ensemble
2. Kirsten Dunst for Best Actress
3. Brad Pitt for best supporting actor
@phantom: The fact that Michael Fassbender is part of that film might help Wasikowska’s chances too.
Macy
Great call on Wasikowska…had her film been released later, she could be a serious contender now with all those great reviews, decent art-house-Box-Office and remarkably Academy-friendly role.
Out of the five I’ve picked, the three that would qualify for NGNG would be:
Ensemble: Harry Potter
Actor: Thomas Horn
Actress: Mia Wasikowska
Best Ensemble: Harry Potter (wouldn’t it be shockingly great if it actually managed to get nominated?!?)
Best Actor: Thomas Horn (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close)
Best Actress: Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre)
Best Supporting Actor: Sean Penn (The Tree of Life) (I would’ve gone for Alan Rickman for ‘Harry Potter’ but that would’ve been too excess since my NGNG Ensemble if for ‘Potter’)
Best Supporting Actress: Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March)
1. Melancholia for ensemble
2. Viggo Mortensen for A Dangerous Method
3. Emily Browning for Sleeping Beauty
Best actor: Joseph Gordon-Levitt for 50/50
Best actor: Chris Evans for Capatain America
Best film Source Code
Jonah Hill is snubbed for Supporting Actor
Carey Mulligan (Shame) for Supporting Actress
Corey Stoll (Midnight In Paris) for Supporting Actor
Sandra Bullock: Best Supporting Actress “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”
Kate Winslet: Best Supporting Actress “Carnage”
1). Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia), Best Actress
2). John Hawkes (Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene), Best Supp. Actor
3). Contagion, Best Ensemble
I guess Dunst would have the most realistic shot of these…
1. Saoirse Ronan for actress
2. Patton Oswalt for supporting actor
3. Win Win for ensemble
Ugh, I got carried away and picked 5, my top3 are :
Emma Stone
Ralph Fiennes
Cate Blanchett
Jake / Dee
Theron, Oswalt and Serkis have just received BFCA-nominations, so how are they NGNG-material ?
Lead Actress – Emma Stone (The Help)
Lead Actor – Thomas Horn (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close)
Supporting Actor – Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)
Supporting Actress – Cate Blanchett (Hanna)
Ensemble – Contagion
Ryan Gosling for Ides of March

3) Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), Best Supporting Actor
1) Ides of March, Best Ensemble
2) Ryan Gosling (Drive) Best Actor
3) Brad Pitt (Tree of Life) Best Supporting Actor
I think this is more of a possibility than anything else– Charlize Theron for Best Actress and Patton Oswalt for Best Supporting Actor. That means Glenn Close is out and we never have to discuss her horrible film again.
Andy Serkis for best supporting actor
Hilary Swank for The Resident OR New Year’s Eve
