And here it is.

Lovely trailer that really looks as if it was made at the same time as the LotR movies. Not sure though if they should go for the whole “OMG will Bilbo be OK??!?” thing becuase even of you’ve never read the book and only know the movies, you’re kinda spoiled, given the fact that a 100+ year old Bilbo appears in the LotR movies. 🙂
I wouldn’t give Lucas much credit for writing Raiders. That’s like 90% Lawrence Kasdan.
Jackson’s big problem with Lovely Bones is that the film had a pretty much tough thematic but he quite couldn’t decide how to deal with this. There are some pretty light scenes mixed up with some really heavy scenes. In some parts, Lovely Bones is a dark drama (but not in the darkest scene of all, in which we don’t see the violence). In some parts, it’s a light film.
But of course Ronan should have been nominated for the Oscars, just like Cate Blanchett was Elizabeth: The Golden Age for example. A great turn in a problematic film. This year’s actress in this case is Glen Close, but I actually don’t think she deserves the nom.
Comparing LOTR to Star Wars is a matter of personal opinion. I find LOTR triology way better and George Lucas is probably never gonna make a dense family drama like Heavenly Creatures. As a director, I have no doubt Jackson is better. He did at least 4 outstanding films in his career. Lucas, only two. But Lucas wrote the Indiana Jones trilogy also, so… tough to call who’s best.
@Manrico: “But then again, Jackson is a far superior filmmaker (to Lucas)”
LOL. The moment Jackson makes a film as good as THX 1138, American Graffiti or Star Wars give me a call. Jackson’s best film is Heavenly Creatures, by far.
I am a very objective, patient, understanding human being. But I cannot understand how there are some people who do not, cannot appreciate these masterpieces. Is it out of principle? Please, enlighten me.
Oh “The Lovely Bones” was bad. Even with low expectations. But I love everything else Peter Jackson has done. On Christmas day I finally will begin to watch “The Lord of the Rings” on Blu-ray and I just started to read “The Hobbit” so the trailer is a perfect christmas gift.
Give Peter ALL the Oscars!!!!
🙂

@murtaza
It’s hard to argue with a Jackson fan like you… What I wrote was my humble opinion… You can criticize del Toro’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark” or “Blade II” or “Mimic” or even the two Hellboy films which I think he did a good job in turning into films, but as a fan of LOTR and with all respect to the trilogy I can say that even with these “horrid” movies that you and I are talking about weren’t as bad as Jackson’s Lovely Bones were Ronan and Tucci’s outstanding performances can’t save the film, and it’s a fact… commercially and critically…
The makeup jobs on some of those guys looks pretty obvious
Hearing those signature background strings of LOTR’s music during the dwarves’ song and the One Ring theme at the end is more than enough to send chills down my spine. On top of that we get to see the gorgeous look of Middle Earth and familiar characters again. What an amazing trailer! Can’t stop watching it.
Lovely Bones is not just a mess, it is a big awful failure. Hated it.
But then again, this comes from someone who didn’t appreciate the LOTR trilogy at all. Big budgets spent on one battle after another made on computers….not my idea of a good time! (ok, the first film, can’t remember its name, at least has a narrative flow, so that one was fairly comprehensible to me..)
@ rizza
in fact that del toro is one of the writers scares me after that god awful don’t be afraid of the dark, another film jackson doesn’t have on his resume by the way as a producer and writer.
Lovely Bones is awful. Dreadful films. Loved the book and love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so went to see the film with reasonably high expectations. But from start to end it was a big beautiful mess.
jackson’s heavenly creatures, king kong and the mighty lord of the rings alone beats many A-listed directors.
@ rizza
and peter jackson doesn’t have those horrid hellboy movies on his resume.
art direction and makeup is all del toro gves to his movies. that’s not creativity but yes pan’s labyrinth was.
Broadbent is a great actor also! The unforgivable was Roberto Benigni beating him in 1999. This was truly ridiculous!
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MCKELLAN FOR THE WIN THIS TIME! Unless of course Jim Broadbent cries a lot in another sad movie 😉
The Lovely Bones wasn’t the horrid film that you all seem to be implying it was. It had problems, and was considered a failure after the ridiculously high expectations following the greatest 3 year run a director has ever had couldn’t be met, but there was a lot to like in that film. Tucci and Ronan were fantastic, and there were some truly well crafted and even poignant scenes.
The Lovely Bones unfortunately had pretty big script problems but Saoirse Ronan’s performance is simply amazing. For me, the best female performance of that year. Better than all the five Academy Awards nominated ones (Muligan, Bullock, Mirren, Sidibe and even Streep).
Stanley Tucci was also amazing but his performance was not given enough praise because of the problems with this film and because the villain character of that year was already Hans Landa, the best performance overall of 2009 and one of the most remarkable characters of the recent history of film.
And, yes, I definitely would have preferred Del Toro at the helm of this project as well. Jackson obviously brings the same old tricks, would have been interesting to see what the vivid imagination of Del Toro could have brought to the table.
Well, I’m not a fan of the series (I fell asleep during all three films), but doesn’t this look a bit too dark? Not The Hobbit of my imagination, anyway…
“I think it is safe to say that Jackson has nothing but The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and hopefully, The Hobbit being part of LOTR saga…”
What crap. Heavenly Creatures leaves everything else in Jackson’s resume for dead.
“del toto is nothing in front of peter jackson. i feel sorry for the way you put things together. do some research and then compare. del toro has nothing but pan’s labyrinth to his credit.”
What about Cronos and El Espinazo del Diablo?
I think it is safe to say that Jackson has nothing but The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and hopefully, The Hobbit being part of LOTR saga… Compared their filmography and I must say at least del Toro doesn’t have Lovely Bones… The only thing Jackson have against del Toro is an Oscar, but creativity wise, it’s del Toro IMHO…
@ john
del toto is nothing in front of peter jackson. i feel sorry for the way you put things together. do some research and then compare. del toro has nothing but pan’s labyrinth to his credit.
“NO OSCAR FOR YOU. BIGELOW for your quickie exploitation movie on Bin Laden’s death.”
WTF, PaulH?
Jesus Christ.
Yeah, but you know what I meant. Wrong wording, yes.
Tero, Serkis is a second unit director not co-director. Big difference.
Peter Jackson is one boring director. BRING BACK DEL TORO !!!
There is no romance between Gandalf and Galadriel by the way. I think its just likely that those two have not seen each other for a long while.
“I think we might be able to safely say it got next year’s cinematography award in the Baggins already.”
Don’t think so, but the 48fps will probably help.
I just hope that these are not three hour films. I can’t stand 3D for that long.
I think this will be the same as in ROTK. Academy wants to see both films before they can decide if they want to give any major awards to this one. I see Part I winning 4 Oscars tops. Well, unless 2012 sucks in general.
I think they feel like they gave enough with ROTK. Howard Shore alone won three Oscars from the Trilogy. There’s no need to shower the very same people with trophies. If both films turn out to be near masterpieces, sure, then Part II will be huge at the Oscars.
The Dark Knight Rises will be an obstacle in 2012. It will be the last Batman for Nolan. They might feel it deserves more than Jackson’s adventure. These two are the frontrunners in blockbuster field. And who knows what Prometheus turns out to be (in a couple of days we will see the trailer). And what if Spiderman is great? Things are busy in big films next year.
Not much more then a character introduction trailer…but I think we might be able to safely say it got next year’s cinematography award in the bag already.
What I like the most: perfect integration with the LotR films.
No reason, so far, to doubt about this project. I doubt they will give it again, Best Picture. But noms for both parts are extremely likely.
Excited about the new themes by Shore. How many Oscars can he win?
If we are looking into Serkis getting a Special Achievement Oscar, it’s for this and Part II (so, maybe not until 2014). After all these (Gollum, Haddock, Ceasar), Academy can no longer ignore him. Also, he will get his Oscar during the show, not in a separate show. I believe.
It will help that Serkis is the co-director of The Hobbit.
this is truly a very beautiful trailer!
so there used to be a romance between Galadriel and Gandalf?
I hope Blanchett ROCKS this one just as fantastically as she rocked “The Fellowship of the Ring”
the song was great!
Okay, so maybe we can get Karen O and Trent Reznor to cover “Misty Mountain Hop” for this one….. j/k
Looks promising.
@Dan
I noticed a difference but didn’t know what it was. I don’t know camera stuff but it looked super clear.
After the mess that was “The Lovely Bones”, this will be a great recovery of Peter Jackson… Amazing one… And seems like WB is off to a good 2012 start with this and “The Dark Knight Rises” though I’m less convinced that the later will live up to it’s predecessor?! “The Hobbit” kinda have that IT vibe in the trailer…
I wonder when on earth will WB drop the first trailer of “Dark Shadows”???
Ive been waiting for this since I was a little kid and was sad after the end of The Return of the King in 2005! Im only 14 and ive been reading up on this film for years and all I ever read was that this film would never get made! Its such a blessing to see that they pulled through and made it!I’m obsessed with LOTR!:) CANT WAIT:) forget the dark knight rises its all about LOTR!
The only thing I like about this is Martin Freeman. Of course, the Lord of the Rings trilogy left me completely underwhelmed (now THAT would be a much-needed reboot).
The most noticeable thing for me was the switchover to the Epic camera. I believe it’s being shot at 5K and 48 fps. Hence, it might take a little getting used to the smoothness and roundness.
do you guys have any standards at all? it is terrible. it is just one wink about lord of the rings after another. the same mistake of the star wars prequels. it looks really awkwardly made, and too serious for The Hobbit
That was a lot of fun. Really. With singing! Yes.
I cant wait to return to the universe that started my love for film. Next year we will finally be back in Middle Earth. Cant Wait!
Seemed like a comedy in the beginning, and then switched tone pretty deftly. Didn’t seem like a teaser, rather a full-on trailer. The Hobbit has quite the highbar to leapfrog over, since the LOTR trilogy was so effin’ good.
NO OSCAR FOR YOU. BIGELOW for your quickie exploitation movie on Bin Laden’s death.
“One of the greatest trailers of the past decade.”
That’s an over-exaggeration.
No,no,no!!! I peed my pants!!! Bagginses!!! 🙂
What an AWESOME trailer!!!!! The dwarves chanting was pure Tolkien…Joe W,that would be a dream come true!!!! Having TWO AWESOME stories with dedicated fans in an OSCAR showdown is more than any movie lover can ask!!!!
Maybe people will start watching the Oscars again next year.
Oscar nod in the bag.
Nolan will win Director and Picture (FINALLY) and Jackson will win 2013 for the second and last part of the HOBBIT. BUT I AM BEYOND EXCITED AND ELATED about next year’s race. Batman and Bilbo… Two of my favorite characters!
One of the greatest trailers of the past decade.
10 Years after The Lord of the Rings changed film, it will do so again. All those close memories made during those three years of extrodinary films came rushing back in the captivating trailer. This will be the most rewarding movie experiance of a generation. It will easily land 11 Oscar nominations if not more.
Goodbye, 2011. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. *waves*
I liked the singing very much.
McKellen is the Oscar story here.
As far as Oscars go, I think this goes right to the front of the line in all tech categories: Film Editing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, Make Up, Sound, Sound Editing, VFX, Score. Wouldn’t be surprised to see it grab a Pic/Director nom as well (maybe a Sup Actor for either McKellen or Serkis?)
What are the odds of a Hobbit/Jackson – Dark Knight/Nolan battle of the blockbusters at the Oscars next year. That would be AWESOME. Not to mention if Prometheus also blows people away (which I hope it will). We are in for some quality popcorn entertainment next year. Can’t friggin wait!
Truly great teaser. Haven’t looked forward to a movie in the theater this much since…well…ROTK. Martin Freeman completely looks the part of Bilbo. That dwarf song was chilling. And I’m so glad it looks as if it was shot at the same time as the LOTR trilogy. Nothing would irritate me more than a lack of continuity in the look of the series (ex: Star Wars OT vs Prequels).
Howard shores score!!! Andrew Leslie’s cinematography!! Ian mckellen, Andy serkis, cate blanchett!!! My heart is beating so fast I think it is going to burst!! The love I have for these films is unparalleled
OH MY FUCKING GOD everything was amazing OSCAR THERE AND BACK AGAIN
Peter Jackson is tempting fate.
The LOTR trilogy is one of the great masterpieces of cinema.
I hope he doesn’t do to LOTR what George Lucas did to STAR WARS.
But then again, Jackson is a far superior filmmaker. And he is working from Tolkien’s source.
Definitely I will waiting for this one the whole year.
Wow. That’s all I can say. WOW.
2001-2003 was one of the best stretches of moviegoing due to these films. And now we get to do it again. There and back again. Also, first poster was also released…

I don’t remember where I read it before, but I must agree with whoever it was who said it:
“It’s like being back at home after a long journey”- So beautiful!
I loved it! Can’t wait!!!
Looks incredible. Epic.
Stunning. Truly beautiful. Oscar Season 2012 has already begun. Wow.
I have to admit, it looks great.
Amazing! Cannot wait to return to Middle-earth!
Looks wonderful. But I’m a little biased. ha!
