i know i will be bawling like a baby in the movie
This is good film. The critics reaction will be crucial for the number of nods.
thomas horn and max von sydow look to be the stand outs also viola davis looks like her few minutes on-screen will be memorable……trailer no.2 gets a thumbs up from me
I hope Daldry films the boy’s final encounter with his mom as written in the book. And I hope they’re able to capture the emotion as written on film.
I really don’t understand the negativism seeing here. All I know is this movie looks beautiful and filled with great messages, histories and performances. If it’s as powerful as they made it look on the trailer I’m totally sold with a BP nomination at least.
This absolutely looks like the best film of the year……for me to poop on!
I actually think it looks great and still has the potential to be a standout in the Best Picture race if War Horse falters…there has to be an alternative to The Artist/Hugo, and I think this may be it, based on what I’ve heard from the screenings.
Man…some of these comments are just nasty. For no reason. If you don’t like how someone looks, just keep it to yourself. We’re talking about films, not faces. Jesus.
As for the trailer, I definitely want to see it now. If it’s saccharine and boring, I’ll get over it. But if it’s truly great, I’ll probably be balling. Worth my nine bucks to find out.
”why can’t you just WANT something to be good?”
Perfect! This is a film people love to hate WITHOUT EVEN WATCHING IT! People think is cool to say this film is trash only. On the other hand, they think it’s cool to say Dragon Tattoo is great… and nobody here has seen it either.
When has this usually respectable site turned into a hater’s circus? YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM. None of you. Shut your giddy traps and stop dragging it to the gallows. Daldry is a good director. The book is great. The trailers are terrible, but, FYI so were HUGO’s. If you love movies, and I guess that is why we bother to come here, why can’t you just WANT something to be good?
I find the negative comments offensive!
@Adam
This is one of my favorite books, and I met Foer at the National Book Festival a year ago, and he made a statement about being skeptical about the way they’re going about adapting this into a film. Personally, I think it looks awful. Bryan pretty much nailed it earlier – “There’s something about that kid’s voice– the way he over-enunciates every syllable, the way his narration sounds like an actor reading a script, etc. Eesh. Sandra looks to be the heart of the movie. But the kid looks sort of intolerable.” It seems like they’re making him some sort of autistic savant in the film…what? That wasn’t even in the book, and that’s the kind of thing that actually matters when it gets changed. Not to mention the clear amplification of sentimental elements. I can only hope it’s just for marketing.
DEAD @ Extremely Dumb & Incredibly Bland. LMAO!!!! Pure genius of a comment.
I meant haters. Ryan, can u add the s for me?
All the bashing and negativity. Wondering, how many of you hater have written or made films?
The first trailer was a small work of art. This is overlong and tedious. Step backwards.
I’m very excited for this movie! I absolutely loved the book! And Stephen Daldry directing makes it worth keeping an eye on. I loved Billy Elliot, and The Reader was great too. (I actually haven’t seen The Hours yet).
Oy. I’ll wait for this one to come on Lifetime some Saturday when I’m doing laundry in 2014.
Thoroughly underwhelmed, and that kid grates. Hugely grates. How this is being considered for even one Oscar, let alone multiple ones is beyond comprehension. Are we sure this isn’t a secret Weinstein production because it’s loaded with so much Oscar bait?
Um, Bill The Way Back is a great film…it just didn’t really make it time for awards consideration last year. Similar to Gran Torino a few years prior. Never have really understood what happened with that…
@HahaLives…Extremely Dumb & Incredibly Bland…”YOU ROCK!” Best comment of the week, if not the year!
You know, there’s always one overly-hyped end-of-the-year release which totally fails, and I have a feeling that this may be this season’s equivalent of “The Way Back.”
Also, did anybody notice the music from “A Single Man” in the trailer from 0:23 to 0:40?
It looks great, i can see Max Von Sydow and Sandra Bullock nominations for their supporting roles. The movie seems so touching, without being sentimental garbage. Looks like a great oscar contender ( picture, director, screenplay, edition, sound, music, cinematography, and two acting noms ). Just wait…..
One thing I’m watching is a VERY big prejudice against this film. Not only here but in lots of other sites. It’s becoming a film people love to hate without even watching it. And I think people are feeling bad and manipulate based on the trailer because they are not able yet to watch a sentimental film about 9/11 probably because it’s so recent and fresh in our memories. If it was the 100th sentimental film about World War II, people would not feel the same way.
OH! So that’s where I know this kid from…I was thinking his annoying voice was eerily familiar.
I’m still incredibly biased against this film if only for the shallow reason that as a former Jeopardy! contestant whose episode aired a few months after this kid’s, I was miffed that I wasn’t offered a contract in a baity movie starring Academy Award-winning actors shortly after my appearance.
The sentimental Spielberg school of thought. Daldry is a good student.
Looks terrible. Pretentious storyline, annoying acting – though Viola looked wonderful. Doubt I will enjoy this one.
I’m sure there is a film about the 9/11 experience percolating somewhere, but I don’t think ELIC is it. While it may satisfy a sentimental need, I doubt that it will honestly address the event, from cause to aftermath. I may be wrong, but I’m not getting a good feeling from the trailer.
Have you guys even read the book? The trailer will make sense to those who have. Max Von Sydow looks perfect.
It looks awful. I’m sorry but the kid is annoying and some shots are unintentionally hilarious. There is something very obnoxious in the film, I think. I don’t like it. Hanks’ line delivery is awful as well. Show the rock, ‘you rock!’ (what the hell?). Sandra Bullock looks good and I can’t say that Max von Sydow looks very promising. It’s at 75/100 on BFCA, guys. It dropped from 100/100 quite significantly.
@ HaHaLives
‘Extremely Dumb & Incredibly Bland’ I LOVE IT! LOL!
There’s something about that kid’s voice– the way he over-enunciates every syllable, the way his narration sounds like an actor reading a script, etc. Eesh. Sandra looks to be the heart of the movie. But the kid looks sort of intolerable.
And Von Sydow’s character… can only express himself through writing on his hands? Eesh x2. Trailers can be misleading, but this looks so precious and manipulative.
@Scott:
I’ve seen it a number of places today, but quickly glancing around, I didn’t see that the links passed through Awards Daily channels– so probably a confusing reference on my part. Should have provided context.
Here are the pictures: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/the-most-powerful-photos-of-2011 Some of them communicate this overwhelming fusion between the subjective experience of the photographer interpreting the scene and the visceral, raw, material reality of a singular instant in time.
To sorta keep this post on the topic of this thread, it’s somewhat interesting to compare the “authenticity” of the emotions one feels from the linked photographs (indexically tied to real event) vs. the emotion one feels during Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (artistic editorializing on and re-staging of a real event). This sort of debate is old hat in a lot of ways, since WWII films (particularly regarding the Holocaust) have been facilitating it for years– but 9/11 was both a media event AND a real event, which puts it into a realm of postmodern experience and shared, genuine tragedy that’s incomparable for most Americans. So the 9/11 genre is a bit different– and this film (first studio “family film” about it, released during politically contentious times) emphasizes these strands of inquiry even more so.
What album are you referring to Alchemy? Is it what Ryan posted?
You know, Daldry really hasn’t impressed me. The Hours features several moments of dazzling cohesion, and a few instants that soar– but I found most of it bloated, portentous, and clunky. The Reader wasn’t terrible but I still resent the film for pushing The Dark Knight out of Picture/Director. Nolan’s film leaves a cultural footprint that’s about 100 times (give or take a factor of 10) deeper than The Reader’s– and with good reason.
Then there’s this trailer: glossy with artifice; marked by an aesthetic that says “intimate– but respectfully done,” as though it’s a branding slogan; ostensibly transparent in its willingness to artfully press emotionally manipulative buttons; etc. Saccharine indeed, as Spout remarked above.
Yet somehow, even as I rolled my eyes, something in the trailer would pop up every 15 seconds or so that would jolt my emotions– even though I was practically deconstructing the responsible filmic devices in real time. I could just be having a weird day– I got all weepy over that “best pictures of 2011” album that went viral yesterday, and that’s not typical. But maybe the movie actually, improbably balances a lot of combustible factors and comes out ahead. At this point, I still feel like I’ll see it… just not with anywhere near the sense of expectation I’ll bring to Girl With The Dragoon Tattoo.
As much I admire Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock that kid may turn me off to watching this completely. Everything about him irks me, from his voice to his looks. IDK, I also kinda secretly hope this flops so WB doesn’t put any focus into campaigning it. The 75 on BFCA’s site is promising of a dud.
Looks good to me. Yes 9-11 is a difficult subject matter and always will be – but so long as it is treated with respect then I hve no problem with film makers using it as a strong sub-plot! Stephen Daldry has an amazing eye and manages to pull great performances out of his cast. He has a truly amazing and gifted cast. I have high expectations for this film and I really hope that it makes waves during the awards season and Oscars.
Eh, the kid’s voice still sounds like nails on a chalkboard.. Trailer has way too many saccharine flourishes, but I guess that’s to be expected in order to market the masses. We’ll see…
I almost cried while watching it. If the scenes of Sandra are as strong as it looks like, she will be nominated for sure!
Better than the last trailer.
Still looks Extremely Dumb & Incredibly Bland.
We will assume that WB purposely created bad trailers so that everyone is surprised by how great the movie actually is.
Look how Hugo turned out. Pretty awful trailer, amazing movie (at least to a good majority). Just saying.
I was right there at the WTC when it happened and this trailer did not make me cry at all.
SANDRA BULLOCK I HOPE SHE GETS NOMINATED!!!!!!!! Cant wait for this. I had tears in my eyes while watching the trailer.
Personally, this trailer made me more excited bc the film looks good.
And you’re welcome Ryan 🙂
911 is such a difficult subject matter to tackle in a movie, and this just seems too light. Also as an acting note, Sandra Bullock was totally anticipating the tower falling down when she was on the phone with her husband.
I’m crying already. Yes, the kid does look promising. If it were a girl, she would have Oscar buzz already. Too bad the Academy likes the male nominees old and grizzly.
I don’t find the trailer offensive but it didn’t make the movie look great, though the kid looks promising.
This trailer actually made me feel offended. I’m gonna try to keep an open mind, but if it is anything like the trailer, it will be one of the worst movies of the year.
