There is a school of thought where Oscar is concerned that goes like this:
You can win if you can give them rock hard erections.
This is why a potential Oscar winner will often show up during voting nearly naked and turning on the heat. Ms. Williams is always appearing with her short hair cut, looking demure. She, like Kate Winslet the year she won, hadn’t ever really turned on the heat with her sexuality. Until now.
JustJared has the GQ picks of Williams firing it up. Makes you wonder if Ms. Williams might pull of an upset after all. This is a hand Streep won’t play, but Davis (built for sexy) could play if she wanted to.

“Too many ‘convincing impressions’ are getting nominations and winning awards.”
Yeah, it really sucks when someone is convincing.
@steve50
Meryl will NEVER ever appear in a QT movie, trust my words.
But I’m sure when Marty calls, she’ll be there.
Like it’s repeated in this topic over and over again that she HAS worked with some great directors the last decade when they’d called her.
Mik was the critic mark kermode?
Rawr! Michelle Williams! Just wow!
I was listening to a radio interview the other day where a British film critic claimed that he thought Streep would win the Oscar over Williams because her impersonation of Thatcher was more convincing than Williams’ impersonation of Monroe. It was more easy to forget that it was an actor in the role for Streep.
Sadly I have a feeling that the Academy members will kind of go for the same logic, and do far too often. Too many ‘convincing impressions’ are getting nominations and winning awards. Swinton and Rooney Mara are the two best female performances I’ve seen this year.
I have to say this is a good theory, as Williams is super shy and totally doesn’t seem like the type of person to do these types of tacky photo shoots, but Winslet? Winslet didn’t suddenly heat things up for the magazines around the time of her Oscar win. She already had years of ‘sexy’ magazine spreads behind her, and all of them were tastefully done. In fact she did GQ several years ago. When Winslet heated things up it wasn’t a surprise. She’s always been very comfortable with her sexuality and Vanity Fair ’08 definitely wasn’t a sudden ‘sexy’ Winslet photo shoot. Williams looks like she’s being held at gun point by Weinstein. She’s the last person I’d expect a super revealing GQ cover from. I never saw this sort of thing from her, she just suddenly turned on the sex kitten button, donning a Monroe-inspired look to boot so people won’t forget her movie come voting time. The pictures aren’t even tastefully done…it’s as if she’s revealing herself for the sake of revealing herself. That cover couldn’t be more tacky.
“of 14 films Michelle Williams has made in the past 6 years, I think 10 of them are brilliant (71%) and 4 or 5 are near genius
of 48 films Meryl Streep has made in the past 26 years, I think about a dozen of them are brilliant (25%) and 4 or 5 are near genuis.
it’s just looks like a really diluted way for Meryl to spread her talent around, while Michelle appears to have better taste or better luck.”
i see interpret your math from a different perspective.
films are age-specific products. if you compare meryl’s films AT THE TIME when meryl was about michelle’s age, meryl’s record is visibly more astounding — “manhattan”, “the deer hunter”, “kramer vs. kramer”, “out of africa”, “silkwood”, “a cry in the dark”, to name a few.
even when she passed the hollywood’s prime age for actresses and her choices, i am sure, narrowed significantly, meryl still did “the hours”, “adaptation”, “a prairie home companion”, “doubt” — the latter two i personally believe being underrated.
besides, i remember “brokeback mountain” and “blue valentine” among those films with michelle in that are really good.
“even Michael Fassbender is playing the sexy mofo game.”
Really? That wasn’t the impression I got during his 1/2 hr interview last night on TV.
He was totally eye-fucking Charlie Rose.
j/k XD He’s going to be on Letterman tonight. I suggest everyone just watch all the late night shows if you interested because people keep popping up without being on the normal schedules. Yesterday I took a potty break so I’d be ready to watch Colin Firth on the Craig Ferguson show and I accidentally missed Jessica Chastain. I didn’t even know she was going to be on. Having said that, Ewan McGregor is going to be on both Live with Kelly and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tomorrow. 🙂
Wish I could fix it so that when you move your mouse finger over these photos and click the special spots it would link you to the Simulated Oscar Ballot.
If you could do that, it would be the greatest thing ever
“even Michael Fassbender is playing the sexy mofo game.”
Really? That wasn’t the impression I got during his 1/2 hr interview last night on TV. “Sexy” never entered the conversation. There were clips from Shame, A Dangerous Method, Inglorious Bastards and Hunger back-to-back. There should be no discussion about best actor.
Michelle has a nice body, but she has a very youthful face and it comes across as pervvy to me.
But, as we know, that’s how Kate Winslet finally got her Oscar, and hell, even Michael Fassbender is playing the sexy mofo game.
Meanwhile Sasha has made my surfing this website impossible because I always stop on the Michelle Williams pictures. Holy moly!!!
^

“Although, Meryl in a QT film….. not really.”
Why not – bet Michelle Williams would. Meryl has a sharp sense of humor and I’m sure it would be something we’d all remember. If she’s happy in her niche, that’s fine, she doesn’t need to prove anything to anybody. She’ll get her third Oscar this year, but will need to mix it up a bit to get number 4.
Michelle Williams hasn’t hit a wrong note since Brokeback. It won’t be long before she receives her first (of multiple) nods.
And I didn’t hijack this thread to become a Meryl Streep one. You just can’t talk about Michelle Williams alone. And why is that? Is she at #3 for real?
I’m sure many of you have not even seen Mammoth which contains one of her best performances… Why? Oh, yeah, it’s some “obscure” foreign film.
If Williams wins, I can be happy about that. In fact, the order of preference for me right now is Tilda, Meryl, Michelle, Olivia, Viola. But since Tilda is a long shot to win (and a slight possibility of missing the nomination even), I am all for the second best female lead performance of the year. If Tilda took a surprise win (very unlikely), next to no-one would be happier than I.
I just want to chime in on all the Nic Cage talk. He really does make dreadful movies. I don’t think anyone here denies that he can be truly fantastic actor when he makes a quality film. But it really is just laughable at the crap he is churning out. He churns out so much crap that when he does actually make an interesting film these days (Bad Lieutenant and Kick Ass come to mind) they are still overlooked I feel.
Oh yes… of course…. All Meryl has to do is calling Martin Scosese and tell him to make a movie with her.
Do you really believe they will do that? In all honesty?
And you forget that sad but true fact about her latest (“stinky”) films: They made a lot of Money, Money, Money and they’d given her a whole new fanbase: young woman.
They are running into TIL just to see her!
I think one of the main reason she worked with Lloyd again is a kind of thank you for thar enormous career boost, like it or not.
Of course I’d love to see her making films like “Adaptation” again. There are or at least were these rumors araound she’s in talk for another Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman movie. I really hope it’s true.
But I can’t really blame her for choosing women’s films at all.
Joel Coen was with her in Beijing, QT liked TIL. There’s hope.
Although, Meryl in a QT film….. not really.
I don’t see any “hate” directed towards Streep – not sure where this assumption is coming from. Nobody in their right mind can deny the paramount talent that she is. What I’m seeing – and feeling – is a level of frustration, perhaps greedy, that we want more from her with regards to the projects she selects.
Tero, you should add Eastwood to your list of directors and have another look at it. With the exception of Spike Jonze, none of them are known as heavy-handed directors with a particular filmic vision. Actually, they are pretty much hands-off, known for being “actors’ directors” who let their stars do what they want. From that list, Meryl’s best performances came from Adaptation and Angels in America – because they challenged her beyond the norm.
My dream directors for her would be Todd Haynes, our 21st century Cukor, or to work again with Katherine Bigelow, this time on a more multi-layered story. Collaborations with Ramsey, Tarantino, Fincher, Aronofsky or PT Anderson would give us a side of Streep we’ve never seen.
She certainly has nothing to prove to anybody, but it would be nice for her not to have to continue turning sow’s ears into silk purses.
ahem..alongside!
And that was along Nic Cage, come to think of it…! Oh, the irony…
Ok, the Streep apologetics are coming at you in full force whenever you state the obvious; that she’s doing a lot of crap. Ok, nothing new about that.
I think Ryan made a very valid point about Streep’s career trajectory and I can only agree to his assessment. On a positive note; Streep did do interesting work ten years back with her involvement in The Hours and, specifically, Adaptation (my favorite Streep performance by far for a very long time).
This is so incredibly tacky and a career low for Michelle Williams. It has HARVEY WEINSTEIN written all over it.
I guess my point was that Michelle Williams is actually one of the FEW women who can claim a better (or at least equally great) resume than Meryl since the year 2000.
Yet, you love to hate Meryl so much. Is it jealousy?
Meryl Streep since 2000:
Worked with Steven Spielberg, Spike Jonze, Mike Nichols, Stephen Daldry, Robert Altman, Robert Redford, Wes Anderson.
Some of the great performances include The Iron Lady, Julie & Julia, Adaptation, Doubt, The Hours, The Devil Wears Prada and Angels in America (TV, I know, but EVENT television; and multiple roles).
Nicolas Cage since 2000:
Worked with Spike Jonze, Werner Herzog, Joel Schumacher, Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, John Woo.
His best/most memorable performances include Adaptation, Matchstick Men, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans, Kick-Ass.
Cage holds no water in this comparison… and to his credit, he shouldn’t be compared with Meryl anyway. It makes no sense, Meryl should be compared with another woman – be it Michelle Williams if you like.
Michelle Williams since 2000:
Worked with Lukas Moodysson, Martin Scorsese, Charlie Kaufman, Todd Haynes, Ang Lee.
Great performances include Brokeback Mountain, Wendy & Lucy, Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn, Mammoth, Meek’s Cutoff.
Now to your overdue actress Viola Davis – since 2000:
Worked with Steven Soderbergh, Todd Haynes, Denzel Washington, Oliver Stone, Stephen Daldry.
Notable performances include Doubt, The Help.
even tastefully done, it’s obvious that it’s all part of the campaign. Even Fassy is posting shirtless in a magazine spread. Nothing wrong as it’s all part of the game.
Meryl has already played a man. Not a woman impersonating as a man, but an actual male.
And you know, I didn’t know that was her the first time I watched it.
I really believe Viola Davis is taking the Oscar home this year. Meryl was amazing, and carried the whole movie. But there is a lot going on for Viola Davis. She is starring in a well-loved (very likely) best picture nominee praised for its acting, she gives a great performance, she is very loved, she never won before, and yes, she happens to be the only African American in the bunch and that helps too, like it or not. I have a feeling she will also win the BAFTA. Meryl will steal many votes, and if Glenn Close gets nominated, she will get some as well. But I believe Davis will be the ultimate winner. It’s her year.
I personally feel that Williams doing this GQ photo shoot is kind of a sellout move. She’s never previously needed to hawk a film during an awards season with shameless, male-titillating imagery as she’s doing here. I suppose that faux-porn is a rite of passage for actresses these days. The men don’t seem to have to undergo nearly as much sexualization in order to be taken seriously. Williams is a BRILLIANT actress. Her Oscar(s) will come, believe you me. I just pray she keeps it classy, not assy.
And 2012 will very likely be the year that Oscar makes textbook history, when two Black performers take home the hardware for both Actress and Supporting Actress. Spencer and Davis were a double act for the ages, like Davis-and-Sarandon in “Thelma and Louise” or Maclaine-and-Winger in “Terms of Endearment.” The two as a unit deserve a pair of Oscars.
“The only actor in Hollywood with a worse sense for choosing who and what to work with than Streep is probably Nic Cage…”
We have to cut back on the hyperbole, because it’s getting out of hand. The above quote is so egregiously lazy and wrong. Streep has certainly chosen better films and directors than Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton, and they’re legends. Move down the list to slightly lesser actresses and I could list Meg Ryan or Kim Basinger or Melanie Griffith or etc etc. Yeah, let’s all hop about the “fuck Streep” train simply because her films have a tendency to be a bland and middlebrow. Take a step back and recognize that she’s been lauded for Julie and Julia, Doubt, and now The Iron Lady just in the last half-decade.
And you have a problem with the directors she works with? What about Wes Anderson, from The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was a charming film. I mean, we all want Meryl to act in modern Deer Hunters and Manhattans, and maybe she could be taking on edgier roles, and maybe Viola’s performance is more fully realized and touching and better and awesomer and blacker and younger and supportinger and blah blah blah. She’s Meryl Fucking Streep, she’s aged great, she works her ass off, and she delivers strong work when her contemporary male counterparts like Robert De Niro go on autopilot. I’m all for criticizing some of her choices, but don’t post these chicken-shit dismissals of her recent career. It’s ignorant.
I see no reason way Davis and Spencer can’t both win. Yes, that movie was mediocre and problematic (for me at least) but it did make me cry, despite my most valiant efforts not to do that. The core of that movie was Davis. She was the emotional center and heart. She grounded it and gave it meaning. Spencer was the emotional release we all needed to keep our hearts from breaking too much. They made that movie anything that it was. It’s not hard to recognize that at all.
I don’t agree with that Nicholas Cage thing. I mean, even most of his bad movies are very entertaining in a trainwrecky fashion: see The Wickerman. Meryl Streep’s bad movies are more like mediocre middle-of-the-road sort of movies, which are just blah.
“The only actor in Hollywood with a worse sense for choosing who and what to work with than Streep is probably Nic Cage…”
Except when they happen to choose the same picture: you get an interesting film like Adaptation.
The only actor in Hollywood with a worse sense for choosing who and what to work with than Streep is probably Nic Cage…
How boring… another year, another biopic performance win. You might think other actors and critics would have hated the cliche by now, but no.
“The performance is great, the film not so much.”
Actor/Actress surprises all for playing a well-known icon who is completely different from said actor’s persona.
Actor/Actress humanizes icon.
It’s just too tired already.
Next year, Viola should to play Rosa Parks, stoic citizen in the media, raging bitch outside of it. Hollywood will eat it up. Two years later, the film will collect dust in a Wal-Mart bargain bin.
Meryl and Michelle had nothing to lose by going this route. The odds are in their favor of winning acclaim. Hollywood is so devoid of ideas, all they have are sequels, prequels, remakes, and biopics (unoriginality as awards bait). Most of these biopics are just as flavorless and uninspired as the latest iteration of Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Twilight.
In a few years, Carey Mulligan will sign on to play Princess Diana. Pundits will buzz even while the movie is in preproduction and fawn all over the performance once it’s released the following November or December.
I’m rooting for an original turn by Viola, Tilda, Kirsten or Kristen to take the Oscar – each one turning in something different in a GOOD movie.
Ryan, did you like Wendy and Lucy? I didn’t know what to think of it while I watched it, but afterwards, I found myself surprisingly deeply moved.
Where’s the dripping? I thought I would see actual liquid drips and drops…
“Michelle Williams has a more distinguished filmography in the past 6 years than Meryl Streep has managed in the past 26 years.”
what an egregiously ignorant thing to say. why is it always easy for you to dismiss meryl streep, like she’s fair game for all the vitriol and snark on this board?
what an egregiously ignorant thing to say. why is it always easy for you to dismiss meryl streep
I’m not dismissing Meryl Streep. I’m saying I wish she chose better movies because I can’t bear to watch a lot of them.
meanwhile I really admire most of the movies Michelle Williams has chosen the past 6 years.
need to see the math?
of 14 films Michelle Williams has made in the past 6 years, I think 10 of them are brilliant (71%) and 4 or 5 are near genius
of 48 films Meryl Streep has made in the past 26 years, I think about a dozen of them are brilliant (25%) and 4 or 5 are near genuis.
it’s just looks like a really diluted way for Meryl to spread her talent around, while Michelle appears to have better taste or better luck.
“The Help isn’t groundbreaking enough to win both actress and supporting actress.”
Yeah, this doesn’t make much sense to me. As Good As It Gets won both lead acting awards, for God’s sake, and that movie is hardly groundbreaking. It’s not even very good.
M$B won actress and supporting actor. Groundbreaking film?
LOL
the word to describe the world of Oscar definitely won’t be GROUNDBREAKING that’s for sure
The Help isn’t groundbreaking enough to win both actress and supporting actress so it is a fight between Meryl and Michelle!! I really want Michelle Williams to win this year
The Help isn’t groundbreaking enough to win both actress and supporting actress
Ugh.
Please give me a fraction of a fucking break.
Like The King’s Speech was “groundbreaking”?
Terms of Endearment was a lot of things. “groundbreaking” ain’t one of them.
christ, look at the baggage you try to load on this movie? So it’s got to be groundbreaking now?
Guess what. It is. It’s the most groundbreaking movie of 2011.
“Didn’t she say she wanted to play a man? Or maybe that was one of the other Oscar contenders.”
Meryl has already played a man. Not a woman impersonating as a man, but an actual male. Glenn Close has also played an actual male, not just Albert Nobbs.
@ Luke, I’ve asked Streep’s critics in the land similar questions.
Where are these roles, the offers that she has rejected or passed by? I too find it a miracle that a 62-year-old woman finds juicy leading roles, one after another, year after year.
It’s very easy to criticize, but I think we need to try to be a little bit more objective about this and realize that Streep is doing wonders.
IMDb says she was considered for the role of Erica Sayers, but 1) that’s a supporting role that doesn’t offer much 2) she was probably tired of playing bitches at that moment; 3) and last + probably most important, I clearly remember her saying many times how jaded and fatigued she felt after finishing “It’s Complicated”, how she’d done 7 films in 2 and a half years, how she needs a long break; and that’s when “Black Swan” started shooting. During the 2009/2010 Oscar season I also clearly remember her saying how she feels happy that she’s alive and functioning.
Apart from the big-name-director “Black Swan” supporting role, what has she actually turned down? I’m curious!
Talking about Top/Oscar/Interesting directors, I’d have to mention Blanchett again, as she really has THE COLLECTION:
Anthony Minghella, Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, Lasse Hallström, Jim Jarmusch, Ron Howard, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Steven Soderbergh, Todd Haynes, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, Ridley Scott, Joe Wright.
I’m hoping her projects with Terrence Malick materialize, as the two of them could do great work together.
Those criticizing Michelle and saying she “should have taken a different approach” need to get over themselves, and right quickly.
She looks beautiful and it’s merely a friggin’ fashion shoot for a respected pub people — please let us know when you come down from your ivory tower pulpits, would you?
Why are people faulting Meryl for not being in better movies? Well, where are these great movies starring a 60 yr old woman?
Well it’s a good point. She does pick a lot of crap. But there’s always the possibility that she actually likes these movies. Has she ever spoken about her favorite films to watch? Maybe they’re all like the ones she’s in. And the fact is I’m willing to bet she could get some better movies made just by attaching her name to it. Or at least could have when the economy was better. She doesn’t have to sit on her tush waiting for mediocre scripts to be delivered. She’s Meryl Streep for goodness sake.
Why are people faulting Meryl for not being in better movies? Well, where are these great movies starring a 60 yr old woman? These recent projects aren’t that great, but they gave her a chance to transform and play great characters. I’d rather she do these instead of bit parts somewhere else as the grandmother or mother to the main characters.
i don’t get the “meryl should be doing auteur or edgy movies” either.
which pictures are those?
a sofia coppola one where she plays a 60-year-old-woman in an existencial crisis, gazing out of car windows?
an american remake of “irina palm”?
Isn’t it exciting this year that there are three running for Best Actress Oscar. Makes it harder to predict which one. I wonder if Swinton will come into play? She hasn’t won a major award yet! Is she nominated at the SAG?
Wanna talk sex appeal? Fassie ALERT – Fassbender is scheduled to be on Charlie Rose tonite.
The real question should be, “How many great directors and writers have interesting roles for women over 35?”
It’s not like Meryl could have starred in The Descendents or Moneyball or Young Adult or Tree of Life or Dragon Tattoo or Hugo or Melancholia or Midnight in Paris. Plus name an actor of her generation and status who is having better/more diversified career moves. Nicholson and DeNiro aren’t working in masterpieces, are they?
“You can win if you can give them rock hard erections.”
Uh, a little graphic and demeaning lol, but whatever.
I don’t really understand why many are upset with Michelle for doing this. Frankly, I’m quite happy that people are actually starting to know who she is after this year, because she’s the best actress of her generation and people NEED to see her movies. She’s a brilliant actress. It’s not like prostitution, like some people are suggesting.
Both women (Williams & Winslet) are channeling Marilyn Monroe and Catherine Deneuve, two famous, uber sexy film stars in their pictorials, so there is some artistic inspiration behind the photo shoot.
Meryl Streep needs to make a film with Almodovar. Didn’t she say she wanted to play a man? Or maybe that was one of the other Oscar contenders.
“We all know Meryl gets first shot at all the best scripts. So why does she choose to be in so many stinkers?”
Good point. She never choses a hardcore director, either. Someone here joked that she would probably bitchslap Fincher by the 9th take, let alone 90th. Imagine the performance we’d get, though, if she worked with a visionary instead of the pablum directors she so often has.
@ curtis
I agree. She’s such a gorgeous woman and I’m a little bit disappointed she’s doing this.
Somehow her innate innocence steals the show even here, taking the attention away from the sex appeal she’s trying to portray.
With Kate Winslet I understand it, she’s your regular super hot chick and her photos were great.
Blanchett exudes aristocracy and class like nobody else and I can’t recall her sinking low:
http://www.poptower.com/cate-blanchett-picture-23052.htm
With Michelle, there should’ve been a better and smarter approach than to just strip her down.
Wow this is just sad. Streep and Davis has this in the bag. This is the stupid crap Mo nique was talking about two years ago.
Sasha,
In studying the Oscar race, I put aside my own preference. To me, which candidate wins reflects how successful their studio campaign. The latter is driven by greater sales potential, whether theater or DVD. So even if your picture has made alot of money so far, if you’ve exhausted the market, winning an Oscar won’t drive sales up anymore, you put your money (or the bank’s loan) to another untapped source instead, to make more money. You invest $$$ in the campaign for that category, the right timing.
The studios are using the Oscar season for sales potential. If a movie was released earlier in the year, it made the money already. How much more? Better put into a newly released project to make back the money spent.
Also remember that with downloading torrents and cheaper DVD imports, it’s niche markets they’re after come this season.
Now we look at the Best Actress race for Michelle. Will Michelle winning get more people into the theaters? Young generic males? They’ve already decided it’s a chick flick, prefer to download via internet to get their kicks. So would the studio invest in the campaign? And if it’s the arty maturer crowd audience they’re targeting for this movie, how would the studio milk it?
The answer will decide how much is invested in the Michelle campaign. Then it translates to Oscar, and sales.
Love her since her Dawson Creek days but just not a fan of her performance in this movie. If there will be an upset, I hope it will be a Tilda win! That, or Streep all the way! 🙂
Great for Williams. Can’t she fight if she knows that she’s in the game? IMO her chances are bigger than Streep’s ones – and I prefer she wins rather than Davis – so GO, MICHELLE – FIGHT FOR YOUR OSCAR!
Not true. Kirsten Dunst gave the best performance of the year and she dripped sex during the movie:
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/04/11/article-0-0B93961500000578-472_634x470.jpg
But no one even wants to talk about her.
Uh, Ryan — not really. Williams gets my vote this year but negating the films Streep has made for the last 26 years would include throwing out the following:
Out of Africa
Ironweed
A Cry in the Dark
Postacards from the Edge
One True Thing
The Hours
Meryl was brilliant in all of them, and they are all terrific movies — some even better than that.
As nice as the pictures are, the interview is even better. Check out Williams’ interview at GQ. A lovely young woman.
As nice as the pictures are, the interview is even better. Check out Williams’ interview at GQ. A lovely young woman.
She really is….inside and out.
Well looking at past comments, I have always been a champion of Streep! I still think that she shoulda won against Bullock and quite possibly Winslet (who arguably was nomm’d for the wrong film). If Streep wins this one (which she could – I don’t think she will), she will join a long list of actresses who won for a good if not great performance in an otherwise meh film…and let’s face it….there have been many.
I have said this to Ryan before, but scientists and doctors really need to study Kate Winslet because I am convinced she suffers from Benjamin Button disease. As she gets older she gets hotter and hotter and hotter. It’s just ridiculous. The amount of guys that would date her would wrap around the planet.
i’d never consider arguing over who is better a waste of time. 🙂
Don’t waste time arguing who is better, who is deserving after so many years. It boils down to the forces of the campaign. It’s politics and money.
Weinstein campaign–in the end it narrows down to one candidate, because they don’t want 2 to eliminate each other. Another Streep interview this weekend on prime time, and a future appearance on Charlie Rose. Weinstein is pushing all for Streep in acting. He also realizes that Berenice can pull an upset, and is fighting hard for Jean too, the charm factor. Big guns there.
So far haven’t heard much from the studio pushing The Help acting categories. They might be focusing their campaign money in other categories, like the big prize Best Pic–more money in sales of DVD if it gets nominated for Best Pic, then winning acting Oscars for black performers. Having read Sasha’s recent article on black performers vis a vis the American market, I’d guess they aren’t as bankable–Unless they’re sex symbols or action stars.
Such is the sorry state, and Oscars aren’t going to be a force to change things, but actually a glossy mirror of the real market.

Thanks Aubrey. You are right about Streep – it’s all systems go for Best Actress and it might produce a winner. So fine, if they want it that bad they can have it. So great, yay, Weinstein wins again and Streep puts another golden statue on her shelf. But it will in no way mean anything. It will have no lasting impact other than a game well played. I think Streep is great in the part. No doubt about it. But I feel another is better and should win. We’ll see how it plays out.
also, while i agree that michelle has a quite impressive resume (blue valentine, meek’s cutoff, wendy and lucy, brokeback mountain), she still has some catching up to meryl to do:
doubt
kramer vs. kramer
manhattan
the deer hunter
death becomes her (camp classic)
the hours
adaptation
a prairie homeo companion
silkwood
sophie’s choice
20th Anniversary deluxe Blu-ray edition of Death Becomes Her.
Need this to happen, please, thanks.
ryan,
because meryl likes to work with women directors and writers lately. and unfortunately, these women are turning out “stinkers”. regardless, she still has an impressive filmography.
Ryan: FACT.
This looks like more fun than trying to Pray the Gay Away.
brb
Kate Winslet has been doing sexy pictorals for YEARS….it’s a good theory, but it wasn’t her first….just sayin…
After seeing her in Meek’s Cutoff and Wendy & Lucy, this is… agreeable. Hell, she was sexy in those films anyway.
absolutely agree with sasha regarding winslet. it’s a shame actresses have to do this.
Somebody has to say it.
We all know Meryl gets first shot at all the best scripts. So why does she choose to be in so many stinkers?
Michelle Williams has a more distinguished filmography in the past 6 years than Meryl Streep has managed in the past 26 years.
Yeah, but it wasn’t really unexpected. Everyone had already seen her sexy ass by then. Michelle Williams is a little surprising, but still, if you’ve got it…
I honestly never imagined Michelle Williams doing something like this, but… damn.
Olivia Coleman or Tilda Swinton should win the Oscar this year. But since neither is in serious contention, giving Williams the Oscar would be fine. The Iron Lady was pretty atrocious. And Streep should not get it because she hasn’t won in 29 years. Davis is a quality choice, but it should be in SUPPORTING.
I don’t have any issue with attractive actresses using their sexuality. It is her choice. Femininity is very powerful, on the whole. Regardless, Williams should have won the Oscar for Blue Valentine last year. I loved Portman, but Williams was more deserving. This could be the make up award.
Williams to pull of an upset? Sasha, that would be upset for you maybe, not for many. She is frontrunner as much as Streep and Davis. At the end Oscar will be Thatcher vs. Marilyn.

Weinstein vs. Weinstein? Hm….
Kate Winslet hadn’t turned up the heat with her sexuality until her (LONG overdue) Oscar year? She’s been naked in like 92 films.

She didn’t really do the sex kitten thing in mags, though. Her nudity was always integral to the parts she was playing.
urgh. this is so disappointing. one of the reasons i love michelle is because she’s never been “that girl”, the girl who gets half-naked to whore for oscar votes. she’s classy, well-spoken, insightful and intelligent. she shouldn’t have to lower herself like this.
Great performance + youth + biopic + Weinstein = OSCAR
OK, Williams should, by all rights, win the Oscar.
The Iron Lady is rotten to the core. Streep fully deserves another Oscar but it’s going to be an embarassment if it comes for this movie.
Octavia Spencer will win for The Help and thereby hamper Davis — not fair, but true.
Williams has a brilliant performance, no baggage and the movie is better than The Iron Lady, and it will garner other nods.
Harvey is putting all of his money behind Meryl. If he were doing the same push for Michelle, she’d be the frontrunner.
Happy Birthday Mr Academy Award…
Damn, she looks H-O-T, but I think the cute school teacher thing suits her more. This is something her Oscar-consultants thought might get some votes from the babe-obsessed Academy members….and they were probably right. If BAFTA-voters hate Thatcher enough to NOT award Streep (unlikely, they nominated the SCREENPLAY, for Christ’s Sake) and Williams pulls off the BAFTA-win, she might just win the Oscar, too. I think the BAFTA is really down to these two, meanwhile the SAG is a 3-way-race on paper (Streep-Williams-Davis) with one more than viable potential shocker (Glenn Close…the Actors might want to recognize one of their very best).
You just took all the heat away from Williams with that Winslet pic.
Very rawr!!!
Hubba hubba! …I’d still vote Viola.
Va Va Va Voom!!!!!!
So why doesn’t Kate Beckinsdale have one? lol Seth Rogen’s an Academy member.
I don’t know. We’re hookin’ for Oscars now? This is getting extreme. Although I do like the first one. But it’s more like I like her hair in it.
YOWSA.
Whoa. I scrolled down to the first picture and was like “HOT DAMN!”. Is this the same cute wood nymph we know??
