Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild picked up the FIPRESCI prize, given by an international jury of film critics, as the best film in the Un Certain Regard section of the main selection. Sergei Loznitsa’s In the Fog picked up the FIPRESCI prize in the Competition, while the jury gave the Director’s Fortnight prize to Rachad Djaidani’s Hold Back.
The Cannes Ecumenical Jury gave its prize to Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt, with Beasts of the Southern Wild receiving a mention.Marked by persistent rain, a Competition that hit critical mass midway with Michael Haneke’s tale of an elderly couple confronting end-of-life issues, Amour, and several polarizing titles, The 65th Edition of the Cannes Film Festival will announce its winners tomorrow at its typically glamorous closing night ceremony.
One day I will successfully memorize what FIPRESCI stands for. (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique). Meanwhile thanks to wiki for helping remind us that for over 80 years the mission of the FIPRESCI global membership of film critics and film journalists is “the promotion and development of film culture and for the safeguarding of professional interests.”
Great to see a wonderful film get rewarded…. first Sundance and now Cannes. This film is like a little engine that could. Looking forward to its release here in Texas.
Ditto everything “Bryce Forestieri” said.
Ryan, I don’t think there is much point in sending Paul to see this movie. Looks like he already made up his mind about it’s worthyness
This film surely is building up as a contender… and a strong one. Maybe it’ll just end as Whale Rider, but I wouldn’t bet against it at Picture, Director, some performances or Screenplay. Probably cinematography, too.
Color me interested.
The trailer’s not that weird or trippy. It looks like a child’s-eye fantasy a la “Eve’s Bayou”, “A Little Princess”, or any number of Miyazaki films, none of which require narcotics to understand. 😛
Ryan, deal; I’ll just be needing some LSD, dilaudid and a side order of special brownies to watch it. 😉
Good God in heaven, this CAN’T be a BP contender, can it? Maybe in Fringe’s alterna-verse. It’s too much of an acid trip based on that trailer. Casual moviegoers I suspect will look at that and say what the frak? And just move on. Is it possible it can be switched to foreign language film? No? Oke…
Considering that Fox Searchlight has put at least one film in the BP race almost every year since Sideways and that this film appears to be their major player, that there was a Winter’s Bone two years ago, it’s stupid to leave this film out of the possible contenders list.
“Quvenzhane Wallis could be the youngest Best Actress nominee to date”
That’d be surreal and so awesome! 🙂
Would make me for once interested in the Best Actress category
So incredibly happy for it 🙂 it definitely deserves it and the other coming awards.
First Sundance, now Cannes…is this the season’s first viable Best Picture contender ? I think it is…I also think Quvenzhane Wallis could be the youngest Best Actress nominee to date.
As the CW’s Gossip Girl might say, O.M.F.G.
