I’ve just gotten back from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ – in my opinion, BRILLIANT – and after being on the fence about her for years, now I am totally sold : Anne Hathaway IS a movie star AND a great actress. In an already impressive cast, she still managed to stand out. Her Selina was pitch perfect and I’m expecting her to knock ‘Fantine’ out of the park, as well. Even if the film got bad reviews, I think she would be still a lock for at least the nomination. I’m guessing they will campaign Selina in lead and Fantine in supporting simply to avoid split votes. Too bad both roles are in the same year, had ‘Les Mis’ gotten a 2013 release date (it was definitely a possibility considering they have just wrapped recently), she could have gotten back-to-back nominations. And by the way : IF she gets to play Judy Garland in that Weinstein-production announced 3 years ago and quietly whispered to go into production later this year (and considering her brilliant year, Harvey will be probably wise enough to get on the Hathaway-bandwagon ASAP), she IS winning Best Actress next year…without a hitch. It will be the perfect storm : coming off a great year + role of a lifetime + Weinstein-factor.
Also, it is nice to see another actress (the other is Amy Adams) who manages to juggle between quality films and BO-hits with such ease : she was the female lead in three big BO-hits (The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, Get Smart), delivered in excellent art house fares (Nicholas Nickleby, Brokeback Mountain, Rachel Getting Married), nailed iconic roles (Jane Austen, Catwoman and probably Fantine) and was part of two big BO-hits (Valentine’s Day, Alice in Wonderland). She managed to stay on the A-list without ever selling a film on her star power alone and that is definitely an accomplishment and proves that she picks her projects wisely…most of the time. The fact that she seems to get better and better, and picks better roles, too, is the icing on the cake.
for OLIN…you’d asked about other musicals that utilized live singing…
there isn’t one that did that completely, but there are some that had certain numbers that were done live. for example, Rex Harrison hated having to lip synch so all of his songs in MY FAIR LADY were done live for the camera–and George Cukor obliged. also, William Wyler, to capture
the emotion of the moment, filmed Streisand’s finale MY MAN live in FUNNY GIRL.
“It’s what required. It doesn’t matter if it’s hard.”
—-Somebody show this clip to Oscar voters, pronto!
She cut off all her hair, lost weight and is playing a prostitute. I smell OSCAH.
This is her year. She’s got momentum like no one has, yes, since Mo’nique. LOVE this trailer and this interview and what with recent events…well, she’s on everyone’s mind’ and radars…and everyone’s heart is going out to her as well…
And if “Les Miz” doesn’t win anything else, it will win this.
Longest-running Broadway musical? Uh… wrong. Andrew Lloyd-Webber is going to slap ET.
Weinstein will have a very hard time campaigning Amy Adams against Anne Hathaway. One thing is absolutely sure (as Mo’nique was so long before awards season): it’s one or the other with Hathaway clearly as the frontrunner.
Do any of you know of any past movie musicals that used the live singing like Hooper has chosen to do? Just curious to know if this has ever been explored before…
Banality Tonight. Forgot how lame ET is.
I have a huge crush on Anne Hathaway right now. Jumping from playing catwoman to Fantine… It’s definitely her year!
I’m no fan of Les Miz, but this actually sounds appealing for some reason.
Yeah, when I first heard of the project I was enormously skeptical. But I love the “live” singing of the trailer and think that will help it enourmously. I love filmed versions of plays, and think they don’t suffer that much. This, it seems, is more like a filmed version of a stage production rather than the pre-packaged crap that we usually get with movie versions.
I’m still skeptical, but I’m more excited than skeptical at this point.
Yes, liked it on stage, but…Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent, A Chorus Line, Man of La Mancha, Paint Your Wagon, Evita, Phantom….
Most musicals come pre-packaged with three walls (one in back and one on each side). Very few directors have been able to break those walls down (Wise and Fosse were successful). Opening each of the above, however, up for the screen sucked the life out of them and since I would put the Hoopster in the same class of directors as the former, I’m guarded.
steve50, not sure if you’ve seen the stage version of the musical, but you are mostly right, if you were to pick it apart it would be pretty terrible, but the songs, gosh the songs, can be so damn effective and, well, it’s easy to get washed away in them and to think the overall material is better than it is
Geez – a spoiler is a Jaye Davidson reveal from the seat behind you before The Crying Game starts, not plot details from a books written in previous centuries.
I’m looking forward to this about as much as my next dental appt, but hope I’m wrong.
Spoilers my ass. Anybody who doesn’t know the story already should be ashamed to say so.
If Hooper/Hopper, whatever, can pull off this adaptation I’ll be first in line saying he deserves any awards that come his way – for this film.
My tongue was planted firmly in cheek. Hence the sentence beginning with “I know”. Understood if that wasn’t made clear.
I’m glad Anne isn’t turning into the Cameron Diaz I had suspected she would.
whats more respectable, being a drug dealer, or being an entertainment correspondent? smh, i’m in my “off my lawn” years. sorry.
but yeah, big fan of Anne ever since Rachel Getting Married. she has the best combination of box office star and good actress since who? Julia Roberts?
I also think we should maybe ban the oscars. because when work slips by the academy and the award season pundit, it almost unfairly gets tainted. and even of its not the best thing you see all year, it still has value.

Mikhail, dude! That’s 3 in row. Thanks so much.
I know so many people who would hate the idea of Hooper winning 2 for 2 – even if this was the best directed film of 2012. I would hate the idea as well. When we have… well… PTA, for one thing.
Yah Anne is winning supporting actress and good for her. I just don’t see this winning best picture and hooper again for director. I mean this doesn’t have Harvey behind it, so let’s how it does. The globe is already a lock for sure.
Glad I already knew the ending… Damn, Mark.
Fantine may die, but she gets to eat cake before she gets beheaded.
HUGE Spoiler! Not only that, it seems that they change the end, because there are no ghost in the book.
And the oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting role goes to…
ANNE HATHAWAY!
It’s almost a FACT!
Yeah, I’ve been slowly reading it for years . . . I had no idea.
I feel you, Chance. I didn’t know his character dies.
I realize this is a huge phenomenon, but to broadcast something like that on TV seems a little irresponsible on ET’s part.
C’mon, ET. Spoiler alert? I mean, I know there’s a book and a popular show and… BUT REALLY!
Ah, forget it.
Oh come on, guys. It’s a popular story — been around for ages.
