As Nick K. points out, the 5th season of Breaking Bad currently has 17 reviews on Metacritic and all 17 are perfect scores of 100. It’s a series that might rightly be called “the best drama on TV.” An interesting argument could certainly be made.
After the cut, check out the tense trailer for season 3 of Walking Dead, which someone at Entertainment Weekly has called “the greatest thriller ever produced for television.” The most interesting thing about that is realizing there are zombies who write for Entertainment Weekly.
Paddy M: I have the same problem with Mad Men. I can’t get past the first episode. And I’ve tried to watch it the second time after a few years. However, I just recently got into Breaking Bad. I think the 1st season is a bit slow and weak, but if you start from second season, it’s probably one of the bleakest but exciting television in a while.
Gave up on this within episode one. Knew I wasn’t gonna get into it no matter how much I wanted to. Also gave up on Mad Men within episode two and Dexter after episode three; same reasons. Don’t know why, I just wasn’t feeling it!
I think maybe the fawning over BB is more because of the lack of broadcast drama quality (some champion The Good Wife, others NCIS, but that show is too popular for its own good and will never smell major or minor Emmy love, even though it proved itself worthy of a series nom as well as for Mark Harmon’s performance in the show’s 200th episode.
Louie? A Tracey Ullman wannabe. And quite frankly, her show (moreso the Fox iteration than Showtime or HBO’s) still holds up.
Not sure if Breaking Bad is the best show EVER, it’s still got 16 episodes to pull off, but it is in the running.
Haha, no worries, Ryan. I’ve been addressed by funnier and stranger names in the past.
Breaking Bad and Louie have consistently been the two best shows on TV for a while now, with Mad Men rounding out the top 3. The Walking Dead could be SOOOO much better than it is, which is why its so frustrating to watch sometimes.
Nick! Sorry about that. Posted in a hurry, on my way out. Fixed!
completely off-topic, “On The Road” opened here in Brazil this weekend to some surprisingly good reviews. I’ll be checking it out tomorrow and maybe I can chime in with my 2 cents if anyone’s interested. maybe other brazilian readers have already seen it? after Cannes, I thought the film was gonna get panned hard. of course, the fact that it’s a brazilian director in charge makes (some) reviews a litle biased, but I was surprised by the reaction here.
sorry for veering off-topic, I really had no idea where else to post this.
Breaking Bad truly is the greatest TV show I have ever seen and everyone should give it a try considering its on Instant Stream at the moment on Netflix. If by the 3rd episode you’re not hooked, you probably never will be…but my god what a wild ride it has been!
Nik V, eh? I guess it could work. 😛
I always had a sneaky suspicion the writing staff at EW were out to suck our brains dry. Glad to see I’m not the only one.
