Believe it or not I saw Butter one year ago in Telluride. The critics there and then mostly panned it. Of course, they maybe couldn’t imagine what was coming next, which is, this bizarre election year. I was one of the few that didn’t hate Butter. I thought Jennifer Garner was brilliant as the Republican-esque butter sculpting champion who just has to take down the poor young African American sculpting genius. Butter will likely make Republicans throw up a little in their mouths the same way we liberals upchuck at Obama’s America 2016.
Butter was funny to me because once it committed to going over the top it ended up doing just that. Of course, the poker faced crowd were not having any of it. At any rate, here is the trailer.
I saw it at the Austin Film Festival last year and loved it! Most of the capacity crowd seemed to as well. Very smartly written and laugh inducing throughout. Too bad the people of Telluride didn’t appreciate it.
““she is just another pretty face” Olivia Wilde is actually uber-smart and comes from seasoned stock.”
I know her family background (her parents and other relatives are serious journalists, her sister is a civil rights lawyer), and in my opinion she’s a very bright woman (If I remember correctly, she did the panel at Real Time with Bill Maher, and she did well there). Also I consistently hear from her colleagues that she is a very down-to Earth person too.
Despite that I consistetly see “she just a pretty face/ she not a good actress comments about her. I think neither of that is true.
I think she has all the tools to become be a true filmstar, but she needs some critical & financial hits. Luckily other then Butter, she will be in many promising movie projects(the biggest maybe among them is Rush by Ron Howard next year) in the next 1-1,5 years.
This trailer does nothing to sell this asinine-looking movie. i hope it’s more than what the trailer alludes.
Is it as dark as Heathers? And no one liked Heathers? I love black comedy. This looks pretty good, but not very dark.
I actually think this looks hysterical. I can’t wait!
No one got Heathers but Sasha?
No one got Heathers but Sasha?
Back in the 80s we all got Heathers and loved it. But Mean Girls is more like today’s comedy because though great and funny it is also PC. Heathers was not PC. Can you imagine anyone making that today? It would never happen, what with all of the violence in schools. Butter is not PC – it makes fun of almost everyone and everything – like Olivia Wilde saying “I get pregnant every month.” But to me it WAS funny. I don’t know. You’d have to ask people who hated it why they hated it but I’m guessing they’re thinking: “it was a mess.” Perhaps so, the plot is unwieldy indeed.
Wilde looks amazing in the trailer! And the stripper/hooker jokes are standard but seem better than usual (To Rome with Love, anyone? “Imagine lying on your back at work all day” – Cruz: “I can imagine”… Bad.)
I actually think Garner looks the weakest. A little forced and too much a caricature. But I am definitely seeing this now. I remember how panned it was, but seems funny.
I like these types of semi-mockumentary contest comedies – remember Drop Dead Gorgeous? People hated it, I thought it was great fun.
Nothing could make me more excited about a film than likening it to Heathers. Sold!

Sasha, you are making me more excited for this film. I hope this movie is a huge hit and reinvigorates audience interest in Garner. Pipe dream, probably. She was brilliant in 13 Going on 30 and helped make that a hit. Elektra and Catch & Release seemed to have erased her commercial viability as a lead. I guess what she needs right now is to attach herself in a key role in hit franchise.
Here’s to her getting her box office mojo back. (Provided that is in her personal interest.)
The little girl should have starred in Beasts of the Southern Wild. She would have brought that role more depth.
Funny looking movie I must say. And I miss seeing Jennifer 🙂
One more thing about the trailer – and that’s Rob Corddry. I didn’t saw this side of his acting so far. And his role is -(based on the trailer)loving stepdad, who also sceptical (maybe cynical is the better word) about this whole contest – quite good too.
I agree, it’s a very fun, very entertaining and perhaps charming film. Saw this in Telluride with you and I didn’t hate it! The script is fantastic, best part about it, along with the performances. Plus, Olivia Wilde (as a stripper). ‘Nuff said. It’s good! Now I want to watch it again.
Excellent, it’s always nice to see underrated/underestimated actresses prove themselves.
Feels like I’ve been waiting forever for Butter’s release. I remember reading about the script when it made the Black List!
To Phantom: I think this could be a break out role for Ms. Wilde. I know many people think she is a not so good actress/ she is just another pretty face, but I think that’s not true. She have potentials (just see House or Tron), and I think she’ll be really great in this one!
This looks funny. I like it when Jennifer Garner does roles that show how good she is as an actress (i.e. Juno).
This trailer and cast looks promising. I read also that many don’t like the movie, but I hope everybody gives it a second chance. The timing to open this film in the heat of the election could be great (no surprise one of the producers is Harvey Weinstein).
I have one little negative sidenote for the trailer – they should’ve put Yara Shahidi’s(the little genius) name in the end when they show the main cast. She is one of the central characters of the movie.
Sasha, Jennifer Garner looks very good in the trailer, but surprisingly enough, so does Olivia Wilde. Is she some kind of mini-relevation / scenestealer in this ?
Olivia Wilde is one of the best things about it – I was laughing watching her in the trailer because she’s so funny….but it was surreal because when I saw it in Telluride I was laughing hysterically all through it and I looked over to my right and everyone else had a stone cold serious look on their faces. I was thinking, do they not get the jokes? Are they offended? What? Like, really, no one really liked it but me, it was like … Heathers.
“Butter will likely make Republicans throw up a little in their mouths the same way we liberals upchuck at Obama’s America 2016.”
The main difference that we liberals also get that ‘Butter’ is fiction…
