Telluride 2012: Chris O’Dowd in The Sapphires, trailer

Inspired by a true story, THE SAPPHIRES follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group The Sapphires entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia (Tapsell), Gail (Mailman), Julie (Mauboy) and Kay (Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (O’Dowd), a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.

  1. I’ve been following Jessica Mauboy since Australian Idol. She has a marvelous voice. Excited for this flick, cuz O’Dowd was awesome in Bridesmaids and everyone knows I love a musical, good or not. :-D

I saw this last week, I enjoyed it, but it adhered far too much to cliches and melodrama to rise above average.
I love O’Dowd and he is one of the films strong points, even his singing was suprising decent.

Saw it last week as well and doing sensational business at the box office. You know exactly where it’s going, but the feel good quality and spot on production values recalling 60’s/70’s Australia ultimately allow it to take you there anyway, and very enjoyably.
