Big Hollywood, in typical wingnut fashion, has attempted to draw a parallel between the hackjob video made to inflame the Middle East because it deliberately baited and made fun of Muslims with Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. They never make it to the second thought, though. Countless films have been released about our conflicts with the Middle East, including Bigelow’s last film, Oscar’s 2009 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker. While the Bin Laden film could enflame Bin Laden’s supporters, that would be Al-Quada it’s not likely to piss off the Muslim world the way lampooning their god would do.
The funny part is, the Republicans, and even some of the democrat side, act so appalled by the riots in the Middle East. But try imagine it the other way around – try imagine a Muslim activist (the dude who made this film was in trouble for bank fraud but let’s pretend he’s somewhat legit) making a film that lampooned Jesus Christ and made fun of Americans? There are already violent attacks and paranoid Republicans ramblings about Muslims as it is. We have plenty of fanaticism to go around in this country and yet it’s so easy for politicians to ask as though it could only happen “over there.”
But back to Big Hollywood – if you want to dive straight down the rabbit hole of looney tunes time try reading the comments on this article. The neocons are desperately trying (and failing) at trying to disqualify President Obama from being able to take any credit for the raid and assassination of Bin Laden. It’s embarrassing for that party, you see, because Obama did in four years what George W. Bush could not do in eight. He was too busy invading Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, the team that eventually got Bin Laden had been working on it for many years but Obama was in power at the time, he gave the go-ahead to enter the compound and thus, it’s his administration that gets to take credit for it, just like the Bush administration has to take credit for 9/11, even though that event had been planned long before Bush took office. Them’s the breaks.
At any rate, Big Hollywood will lead the other loudmouth conservatives like Ann Coulter to take a bite out of this truly lame parallel and use it as some sort of blame game — Obama is already being accused of security leaks around the film, Bigelow and Mark Boal are already feeling the pressure. Why? It’s all about the crybabies on the right. Because this is how the game of politics is played.
The author, John Nolte, is being deliberately sarcastic but not really:
Moreover, an excuse Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will not be able to use in the case of “Zero Dark Thirty” (as she did with “Innocence of Muslims”) is the cowardly and self-righteous claim that the federal government and the Obama White House had nothing to do with “Zero Dark Thirty.”
Because the federal government and the Obama White House had everything to do with “Zero Dark Thirty.”
As we now know, in an effort to get this glitzy in-kind contribution (tens of millions of dollars) up on the screen in time to affect the election, it was the Obama Administration that gave the filmmakers tons of encouragement and a troubling amount of access to all kinds of classified material.
But this very same Obama Administration has since learned that it wasn’t the Obama Doctrine of disengaging with the Middle East and embracing the Muslim Brotherhood that caused all this mayhem and murder last week. It was a movie.
This means that the only responsible thing for the Obama Administration to do is to get proactive and, in the interest of national security and to help ensure the safety of Americans overseas, put as much pressure as they can on Sony to stop the distribution of “Zero Dark Thirty.”
After all, this is what the Administration did to YouTube to stop the distribution of “The Innocence of Muslims.”
And I’m certain no one in Hollywood would be alarmed if the government were to pressure Sony not to release its film. Why would they if they won’t stand up for the “Innocence of Muslims” filmmaker being persecuted by our government and media overlords today?
You know, because movies create terrorism.
