Since the awards stuff has to get out there early, like really really early, and Les Miz doesn’t start screening until the end of November, the tech stuff has to get out there before the movie does. From the looks of it, Les Miz is a top to bottom Oscar contender in the techs, at the very least: costumes, art direction, sound, makeup. Entertainment Weekly has a preview of those costumes, as the fine folks at Oh No They Didn’t just posted:
Hunger Games for costume design, anyone?
Thrilling! Beautifully done! I’m getting goose bumps!
I really needed this as an up after surviving Hurrican Sandy. The elevators in my building were turned off for 24 hours and friends downtown still don’t have heat or light. Les Miserables indeed!
Lest we forget “Snow White and the Huntsman”?
Colleen Atwood (no stranger to awards herself) did a fantastic job creating the fantasy costumes for this film.
Personally, I thought it has contained thus far the best production design of any film released this year.
So this film gets my vote for these two technical awards.
Too bad Catherine Martin won’t be in the mix for “The Great Gatsby”. She would have been a nominee, most certainly.
I liked the costumes in CLOUD ATLAS. I was happy to see that there’s a fair amount of knitting in the future.
Actually this is a great year for these categories. LAWLESS won’t get in of course but I loved the costumes there, and there’s a case for ARGO, we’ve still got THE HOBBIT and LINCOLN and well it just goes on and on.
It’s a great year for everything. This is going to be so much fun. 🙂
Quartet has a new poster which looks great! 🙂

@Phantom, Cloud Atlas is definitely in play. It’s worth noting that the full title of this newly re-named category (which really needs to be expanded to five contenders) is ‘Make-up and Hairstyling’. Following last year’s win for “Iron Lady” I think “Lincoln” has a very good chance.
I also have to say that it feels like they’ve used a similar look hairwise on Helena Bonham Carter multiple times at this point.
Jerry, add Cloud Atlas to your Makeup-list, I haven’t seen the film, but if the 5-minute trailer is any indication, it will be hard to top this year.
Agree 100% with Nicole! However the costumes here don’t seem to be that opulent or extravagant as say previous winners before. I think AK still has this in the bag and will probably be its only win with maybe score, but Les Miz is starting to give it some competition, but in the end I think the ampas will favor opulent Russian aristocrats to French poor people. The only costumes worth noticing in those stills are HBC’s and Baron Cohens. The others look Boring and nothing that great. However this is soooo winning production design. Can’t wait 🙂
If Baz’s film The Great Gatsby had been in this year, it’d be the sure fire winner. Catherine Martin is no stranger to getting awards. The costumes in Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom were simply gorgeous and ahead of the game.
THENARDIERS OH MY GOD
I can see some stiff competition between Les Miz, Anna Karenina, Lincoln and Argo for costume and Art Direction. Then Les Miz, Lincoln and Hitchcock for makeup. The 20 year aging up of Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean will be tricky.
