Marion Cotillard gives the best female performance of this year in Rust and Bone and she deserves the nomination to the Best Actress category and winning it. She is incredible and her performance is superb, brilliant and wonderful.
Full steam ahead for Marion – she has done consistently good work since La Vie..It’s always a pleasure to see her light up every movie (MinParis/TDKRises/Public Enemies)…Can’t wait to see Rust and Bone and, hopefully, its good.
Marion killed it in Rust and Bone, she will definitely get a best actress nomination. It was so intense, I just can’t see her getting shut out.
I still don’t think Cotillard will make it at the Oscars. I think she will be overshadowed by Riva in the foreign performance department. And december will bring Maggie Smith in Quartet and Naomi Watts in The Impossible. The former has Downton Abbey and Marigold Hotel AND Harvey to keep her in the conversation, while the latter has what looks like a BP contender and she is backed by a studio which knows the game (See the Demian Bichir nomination). I don’t think Rust and Bones winning in London means anything for Marion, really. Still think it’s going to be Lawrence/Wallis/Mirren/Riva/Watts
I’m thrilled Rust and Bone won, it was amazing!
Después de Lucia(After Lucia) should have won!!!!
“But the lineups don’t look especially interesting to begin with. Leftovers from other festivals plus films which have already opened elsewhere.”
That’s a shockingly myopic view of what makes films interesting and implies a very short shelf life for things that should remain fresh at least throughout the festival season.
@ jake… its pretty damn good. i’d check it out. i’d be surprised if you (or most film-lovers) didn’t have it in your top 10 of 2012 at the end of the year.
Is Beasts of the Southern Wild really that good? Or is it overrated?
London’s Film Fest may not be one of the big ones but it’s trying to position itself as a film festival of note and hopefully will get more world premieres in coming years. I’m not sure how they chose the competition titles as it’s a tiny subset of the films that played (the usual suspects included- Argo, The Sessions etc).
In any case, this is my home fest and I’ve loved those films I’ve seen during it and love their choices (Rust and Bone was my favourite of the films I saw). The Surprise Film tonight of Silver Linings Playbook was definitely a step up from the Damsels in Distress disaster of last year too!
I’m not in any place to comment on how deserved these wins are, but, in each category, it seems like they’ve chosen the most safe, popular choice. But the lineups don’t look especially interesting to begin with. Leftovers from other festivals plus films which have already opened elsewhere.
